The Cynic Philosophers: From Diogenes to Julian (Penguin Classics)
Robert F Dobbin; Diogenes Laertius; Dio, Chrysostom; Lucian, of Samosata; Epictetus; Julian, Emperor of Rome
London; Penguin Books; Penguin Classics, Penguin classics, London ; New York, 2012
'Poverty does not consist in the want of money,' I answered, 'nor is begging to be deplored. Poverty consists in the desire to have everything, and through violent means if necessary' From their founding in the fifth century BC and for over 800 years, the Cynic philosophers sought to cure humanity of greed and vice with their proposal of living simply. They guaranteed happiness to their adherents through freedom of speech, poverty, self-sufficiency and physical hardiness. In this fascinating and completely new collection of Cynic writing through the centuries, from Diogenes and Hipparchia, to Lucian and the Roman emperor Julian, the history and experiences of the Cynic philosophers are explored to the full. Robert Dobbin's introduction examines the public image of the Cynics through the ages, as well as the philosophy's contradictions and how their views on women were centuries ahead of their time. This edition also includes notes on the text, chronology, glossary and suggested further reading. Translated, edited and with an introduction by Robert Dobbin

The Nisibis War 337-363 : the defence of the Roman East AD 337-363

Casemate Publishers & Book Distributors, LLC;Pen & Sword Military, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Barnsley, South Yorkshire, 2016
The war of 337-363 (which the author dubs the ‘Nisibis War'), was an exception to the traditional Roman reliance on a strategic offensive to bring about a decisive battle. Instead, the Emperor Constantius II adopted a defensive strategy and conducted a mobile defence based upon small frontier (limitanei) forces defending fortified cities, supported by limited counteroffensives by the Field Army of the East. These methods successfully checked Persian assaults for 24 years. However, when Julian became emperor his access to greater resources tempted him to abandon mobile defence in favour of a major invasion aimed at regime change in Persia. Although he reached the Persian capital, Ctesiphon, he failed to take it, was decisively defeated in battle and killed. The Romans subsequently resumed and refined the mobile defence, allowing the Eastern provinces to survive the fall of the Western Empire. John Harrel applies his personal experience of military command to a strategic, operational, tactical and logistical analysis of these campaigns and battles, highlighting their long-term significance. The Last Pagan Emperor: Julian The Apostate And The War Against Christianity Julianus De Afvallige. English
Római Birodalom: császár Iulianus;Emperor of Rome Julian;Teitler, H. C
Oxford University Press, Incorporated, Oxford University Press USA, New York, 2017
Flavius Claudius Julianus was the last pagan to sit on the Roman imperial throne (361-363). Born in Constantinople in 331 or 332, Julian was raised as a Christian, but apostatized, and during his short reign tried to revive paganism, which, after the conversion to Christianity of his uncle Constantine the Great early in the fourth century, began losing ground at an accelerating pace. Having become an orphan when he was still very young, Julian was taken care of by his cousin Constantius II, one of Constantine's sons, who permitted him to study rhetoric and philosophy and even made him co-emperor in 355. But the relations between Julian and Constantius were strained from the beginning, and it was only Constantius' sudden death in 361 which prevented an impending civil war.As sole emperor, Julian restored the worship of the traditional gods. He opened pagan temples again, reintroduced animal sacrifices, and propagated paganism through both the spoken and the written word. In his treatise Against the Galilaeans he sharply criticised the religion of the followers of Jesus whom he disparagingly called 'Galilaeans'. He put his words into action, and issued laws which were displeasing to Christians--the most notorious being his School Edict. This provoked the anger of the Christians, who reacted fiercely, and accused Julian of being a persecutor like his predecessors Nero, Decius, and Diocletian. Violent conflicts between pagans and Christians made themselves felt all over the empire. It is disputed whether or not Julian himself was behind such outbursts. Accusations against the Apostate continued to be uttered even after the emperor's early death. In this book, the feasibility of such charges is examined.

Die Beiden Satiren Des Kaisers Julianus Apostata: Symposion Oder Caesares, Und Antiochikos Oder Misopogon : Griechisch Und Deutsch Mit Einleitung, Anmerkungen Und Index Caesares. German & Greek
Friedhelm L. Müller
Franz Steiner Verlag Wiesbaden gmbh, Palingenesia, Band 66, 1998

The Last Pagan Emperor: Julian The Apostate And The War Against Christianity Julianus De Afvallige. English
Hans C. Teitler
Oxford University Press, Incorporated, 1, US, 2017
Flavius Claudius Julianus was the last pagan to sit on the Roman imperial throne (361-363).

Sons of Hellenism, Fathers of the Church: Emperor Julian, Gregory of Nazianzus, and the Vision of Rome (Volume 49) (Transformation of the Classical Heritage)
Susanna Elm
University of California Press, Transformation of the Classical Heritage; 49, Reprint, 2015
This groundbreaking study brings into dialogue for the first time the writings of Julian, the last non-Christian Roman Emperor, and his most outspoken critic, Bishop Gregory of Nazianzus, a central figure of Christianity. Susanna Elm compares these two men not to draw out the obvious contrast between the Church and the Emperor’s neo-Paganism, but rather to find their common intellectual and social grounding. Her insightful analysis, supplemented by her magisterial command of sources, demonstrates the ways in which both men were part of the same dialectical whole. Elm recasts both Julian and Gregory as men entirely of their times, showing how the Roman Empire in fact provided Christianity with the ideological and social matrix without which its longevity and dynamism would have been inconceivable.- Contracubierta

Nero: Destroyer of Rome (Leaders of Ancient Rome)
Morgan, Julian, 1958-
Rosen Publishing Group, Leaders of ancient Rome, 1st ed., New York, New York State, 2003

The life and rule of the first century Roman emperor Nero, who became head of the world's mightiest empire at the age of sixteen and later became infamous for his cruelty and ...

School Library Journal

Gr 6-8-No life could more clearly demonstrate that power corrupts than that of the Roman Emperor Nero. His excesses are well described, including his murder of his own mother, his plundering of the public treasury, and his implication in the murder or exile of enemies both real and imagined. The full-color illustrations are generally fine additions to a book that takes pains to portray the emperor in the context of his times. One map of the Roman Empire fails to include Britain, even though by Nero's day, it had at least partially been subdued and brought into the empire. Caesar's life is one of the more thoroughly documented of ancient times. While this book adds no new information, it is attractively packaged. Full-page color illustrations and (occasionally blurry) photos depict various aspects of Roman life during Republican times. However, the text devotes more space to the era that produced Caesar than to the man. His military career and tactics get the most attention in a chapter that covers the conquest of Gaul, but there is a decided lack of maps and diagrams to demonstrate battles and tactics. For a livelier and more personal but less comprehensive account, try Robert Green's Julius Caesar (Watts, 1996).-David Pauli, Hillsboro Public Library, OR Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Julian: Rome's Last Pagan Emperor (Ancient Lives)
Philip Freeman;
Yale University Press, Ancient Lives, 2023
The tragic life of Julian, the last non-Christian emperor of Rome, by award-winning author Philip Freeman Flavius Claudius Julianus, or Julian the Apostate, ruled Rome as sole emperor for just a year and a half, from 361 to 363, but during that time he turned the world upside down. Although a nephew of Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor of Rome, Julian fought to return Rome to the old gods who had led his ancestors to build their vast empire. As emperor, Julian set about reforming the administration, conquering new territories, and reviving ancient religions. He was scorned in his time for repudiating Christianity and demonized as an apostate for willfully rejecting Christ. Through the centuries, Julian has been viewed by many as a tragic figure who sought to save Rome from its enemies and the corrupting influence of Christianity. Christian writers and historians have seen Julian much differently: as a traitor to God and violent oppressor of Christians. Had Julian not been killed by a random Persian spear, he might well have changed all of history.

The Specter of the Jews : Emperor Julian and the Rhetoric of Ethnicity in Syrian Antioch
Ari Finkelstein
University of California Press, Foundation Imprint in Jewish Studies, 1, 2018
The book investigates how the emperor Julian (361–63 c.e.) uses Jews as ethnic Judeans in his hellenizing project to define Hellenic identity and to disqualify and delegitimize Christian ethnic claims. It concludes by summing up the main takeaways of the book for Jewish, Christian, and Roman historians of late antiquity.

The Specter of the Jews : Emperor Julian and the Rhetoric of Ethnicity in Syrian Antioch
Finkelstein, Ari
University of California Press, Foundation Imprint in Jewish Studies, 1, 2018
In the generation after Constantine the Great elevated Christianity to a dominant position in the Roman Empire, his nephew, the Emperor Julian, sought to reinstate the old gods to their former place of prominence--in the face of intense opposition from the newly powerful Christian church. In early 363 c.e., while living in Syrian Antioch, Julian redoubled his efforts to hellenize the Roman Empire by turning to an unlikely source: the Jews. With a war against Persia on the horizon, Julian thought it crucial that all Romans propitiate the true gods and gain their favor through proper practice. To convince his people, he drew on Jews, whom he characterized as Judeans, using their scriptures, institutions, practices, and heroes sometimes as sources for his program and often as models to emulate. In The Specter of the Jews, Ari Finkelstein examines Julian's writings and views on Jews as Judeans, a venerable group whose religious practices and values would help delegitimize Christianity and, surprisingly, shape a new imperial Hellenic pagan identity.

Constantine
Margaux Baum; Julian Morgan
The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc, Rosen Publishing Group, New York, 2016
The rise of Constantine marked a pivotal and transformative time for the Roman Empire. Besides imposing many important changes to Rome's government and currency and a reorganization of civil and military spheres, Constantine is also well known for being the first Roman emperor to embrace and eventually convert to Christianity, a religion once oppressed and reviled by pagan Rome, and for shifting imperial power to the eastern part of the empire. In this book, the life of Constantine the Great, as he would become known as, is explored, analyzed, and enlivened via historical images of artworks and ancient Roman relics. Julian: An Intellectual Biography, first published in 1981, presents a penetrating and scholarly analysis of Julian’s intellectual development against the background of philosophy and religion in the late Roman Empire. Professor Polymnia Athanassiadi tells the story of Julian’s transformation from a reclusive and scholarly adolescent into a capable general and an audacious social reformer. However, his character was fraught with a great many contradictions, tensions and inconsistencies: he could be sensitive and intelligent, but also uncontrollably spontaneous and subject to alternating fits of considerable self-pity and self-delusion. Athanassiadi traces the Emperor Julian’s responses to personal and public challenges, and dwells on the conflicts that each weighty choice imposed on him. This analysis of Julian’s character and of all the issues that confronted him as an emperor, intellectual and mystic is based largely on contemporary evidence, with particular emphasis on the extensive writings of the man himself.

Emperor and Author : The Writings of Julian 'the Apostate'
Nicholas J. Baker-Brian; Shaun Tougher
ISD LLC, ISD Distribution, Swansea, 2012
This volume offers the first comprehensive analysis in English of all the writings of Julian (r. AD 361-363), the last pagan emperor of Rome, noted for his frontal and self-conscious challenge to Christianity. The book also contains treatments of Julian's laws, inscriptions, coinage, as well as his artistic programme. Across nineteen papers, international specialists in the field of Late Antique Studies offer original interpretations of an extraordinary figure: emperor and philosopher, soldier and accomplished writer. Julian, his life and writings, are here considered as parts of the tumult in politics, culture and religion during the Fourth Century AD. New light is shed on Julian's distinctive literary style and imperial agenda. The volume also includes an up-to-date, consolidated bibliography.

Trajan Optimus Princeps: A Life and Times
Julian Bennett
Routledge, 2011
Did Trajan really deserve his reputation as the embodiment of all imperial virtues? Why did Dante, writing in the Middle Ages, place him in the sixth sphere of Heaven among the Just and Temperate rulers? In this, the only biography of Trajan available in English, Julian Bennett rigorously tests the substance of this glorious reputation. Surprisingly, for a Roman emperor, Trajan comes through the test with his reputation relatively intact.
