Can Oxford be improved? : a view from the dreaming spires and from the satanic mills Anthony Kenny and Robert Kenny Exeter, UK ; Charlottesville, VA: Imprint Academic, Exeter, UK, Charlottesville, VA, England, 2007
In December 2006, dons at Oxford University caused turmoil by rejecting a set of governance reforms that were championed by their own vice-chancellor. This book is a response to these events, addressed in large part to Oxford's funders - government and benefactors - and is useful reading for those with an interest in the future of this university. Sir Anthony Kenny was formerly Master of Balliol College, Oxford, and president of the British Academy. He is the author of many books on philosophy and over 40 years has held almost every kind of post in Oxford from graduate student to pro-vice-chancellor. Robert Kenny is managing director of a consulting firm.

Partial Memories : Sketches From an Improbable Life Glasersfeld, Ernst von Andrews UK, Andrews UK Ltd., Exeter, UK, 2015
Autobiographical sketches by the philosopher and semioticist Ernst von Glasersfeld. The author writes:'Memories are a personal affair. They are what comes to mind when you think back, not what might in fact have happened at that earlier time in your life. You can no longer be certain of what seemed important then, because you are now looking at the past with today's eyes. The Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico had that insight three hundred years ago: When we think of things that lie in the past, we see them in terms of the concepts we have now.'

Food in European Literature (European Studies Series) Wilkins, John, 1954- Exeter, UK: Intellect Books, Ingram Publisher Services UK, Exeter, UK, 1996
Literature often draws on foods and patterns of eating, and symbolism based on them, because of their fundamental place in juman life and culture. Furthermore, literature has close historical ties to the culture in which it is created and may well portray good and bad times in the farming year. English and French novels have often associated a plentiful supply of food with well-being and festivity, while shortages have represented deprivation and misery.

London's Grand Guignol and the Theatre of Horror (Exeter Performance Studies) Prof. Richard J. Hand; Prof. Michael Wilson Exeter, UK: University of Exeter Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), Exeter, UK, 2007
A companion to UEP’s Grand-Guignol: The French Theatre of Horror (now in its third reprint). A genre that has left more of a mark on British and American culture than we may imagine” (Gothic Studies). London’s Grand Guignol was established in the early 1920s at the Little Theatre in the West End. It was a high-profile venture that enjoyed popular success as much as critical controversy. On its side were some of the finest actors on the English stage, in the shape of Sybil Thorndike and Lewis Casson, and a team of extremely able writers, including Noël Coward. London's Grand Guignol and the Theatre of Horror considers the importance and influence of the English Grand Guignol within its social, cultural and historical contexts. It also presents a selection of ten remakarble English-language Grand Guignol plays, some of which were banned by the Lord Chamberlain, the censor of the day, and have never been published or publicly performed. Among the plays in the book is a previously unpublished work by Noël Coward, The Better Half, first performed at the Little Theatre in 1922. The reviewer in the journal Gothic Studies wrote, of the authors’ previous book: “having recently taught a module on Grand Guignol with third year drama students, it is also worth noting that this book captured their imaginations in a way that few other set texts seem to manage.”

Relativism and the Foundations of Liberalism (St. Andrews Studies in Philosophy and Public Affairs) (St Andrews Studies in Philosophy & Public Affairs) Long, Graham Mark Andrews UK, Andrews UK Ltd., Exeter, UK, 2004
"Moral relativism is often regarded as both fatally flawed and incompatible with liberalism. This book aims to show why such criticism is misconceived. First, it argues that relativism provides a plausible account of moral justification. Drawing on the contemporary relativist and universalist analyses of thinkers such as Harman, Nagel and Habermas, it develops an alternative account of coherence relativism. Turning to liberalism, the book argues that moral relativism is not only consistent with the claims of contemporary liberalism, but underpins those claims. The political liberalism of Rawls and Barry is founded on an unacknowledged commitment to a relativist account of justification. In combining these two elements, the book offers a new understanding of relativism, and demonstrates its relevance for contemporary liberal thought."--BOOK JACKET

Art and Enlightenment : Scottish Aesthetics in the 18th Century Friday, Jonathan; Andrews UK, Library of Scottish philosophy, Luton, 2012
During the intellectual and cultural flowering of Scotland in the 18th century few subjects attracted as much interest among men of letters as aesthetics - the study of art from the subjective perspective of human experience. All of the great philosophers of the age - Hutcheson, Hume, Smith and Reid - addressed themselves to aesthetic questions. Their inquiries revolved around a cluster of issues - the nature of taste, beauty and the sublime, how qualitative differences operate upon the mind ...;Cover; Contents; Front matter; Title page; Copyright page; Series Editor's Note; Introduction; Body matter; One: Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746); Reading I: An Inquiry Concerning Beauty, Order, Harmony, Design; Two: George Turnbull (1698-1748); Reading II: A Treatise on Ancient Painting; Three: David Hume (1711-1776); Reading III: Of Beauty and Deformity; Reading IV: Of Contiguity and Distance in Space and Time; Reading V: Of the Standard of Taste; Reading VI: Of Tragedy; Four: John Baillie (Date of Birth Unknown-1743); Reading VII: An Essay on the Sublime; Five: Alexander Gerard (1728-1795).

lgli/Madness and Literature - What Fiction Can Do for the Understanding of Mental Illness.epub
Madness and Literature: What Fiction Can Do for the Understanding of Mental Illness (Language, Discourse and Mental Health) Lasse Raaby Gammelgaard University of Exeter Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), Exeter, UK, 2022
Mental illness has been a favourite topic for authors throughout the history of literature, and, conversely, psychologists and psychiatrists like Sigmund Freud and Karl Jaspers have been interested in and influenced by literature. Pioneers within philosophy, psychiatry and literature share the endeavour to explore and explain the human mind and behaviour, including what a society deems as being outside perceived normality. This volume engages with literature's multifarious ways of probing minds and bodies in a state of ill mental health. To encompass this diversity, the theoretical approach is eclectic and transdisciplinary. The cases and the theory are in dialogue with a clinical approach, addressing issues and diagnoses such as trauma, psychosis, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, self-harm, hoarding disorder, PTSD and Digital Sexual Assault. The volume has three parts. Chapters in Part I address literary representations of madness with a historical awareness, outlining the socio-political potentials of madness literature. Part II investigates how representations of mental illness can provide a different way of understanding what it is like to experience alternative states of mind, as well as how theoretical concepts from studies in literature can supplement the language of psychopathology. The chapters in Part III explore ways to apply literary cases in clinical practice. Throughout the book, the contributors explore and explain how the language and discourses of literature (stylistically and theoretically) can teach us something new about what it means to be in ill mental health.

Standing Up To Supernanny (societas) Bristow, Jennie; Institute of Ideas Andrews UK, Andrews UK Ltd., Exeter, UK, 2009
Parenthood, we are told, requires a massive adjustment to our lives, emotions, and relationships, and we have to be taught how to deal with that. But can it really be so bad that we need constant counselling and parenting classes? It is a myth that today's parents are hopeless and lazy: in many ways, we have become too diligent, too hopeful of great outcomes and clear rewards, to the point where we lose ourselves in trying to provide some kind of professional service to our children. The current obsession with perfect parenting increases our insecurity and distrust of each other, and diminishes our authority over our kids. This book is about asking: Why have we invited Supernanny into our living rooms - and how can we kick her out?

Histories and Discourses: Rewriting Constructivism Siegfried J. Schmidt; W.K. Kock; A.R. Kock Exeter, UK ; Charlottesville, VA: Imprint Academic, Charlottesville, VA, 2007
Siegfried J. Schmidt is closely associated in Germany with the cross-disciplinary research programme of Radical Constructivism. In Histories & Discourses he carries out a change of perspective from media and communication studies to studies of culture and the philosophy of language. His 'rewriting' of constructivism shows that classical constructivism shares some fundamental assumptions with realism, and he creates a new vocabulary which allows us to understand how we construct truth, identity, ethics, etc., without using any point of reference which lies beyond our culture (our history and discourses).

This book argues that new developments in the sciences, in particular twentieth-century physics and twenty-first-century biology, suggest revising several pessimistic outlooks for the development of a scientific understanding of the relationship of humans with the universe in particular, implications for the development of a natural religiousness. In the new vision a universe which is friendly to life and consciousness naturally emerges.

The Limits of Political Theory: Oakeshott's Philosophy of Civil Association (British Idealist Studies) Kenneth B. McIntyre Andrews UK, Andrews UK Ltd., Exeter, UK, 2004
"This book examines Oakeshott's political philosophy within the context of his more general conception of philosophical understanding. The book stresses the underlying continuity of his major writings on the subject and takes seriously the implications of understanding the world in terms of modality." "The book suggests strongly that Oakeshott's philosophy of political activity cannot be reduced to a branch of conservatism, liberalism, or postmodernism or a theory or set of doctrines which fit neatly into any conventional school, like that of Idealism or Skepticism. Rather, Oakeshott's philosophy of political activity is a provocation to all of the currently dominant schools of political theory and political practice. It questions their presuppositions and exposes as ambiguous, arbitrary, or confused all of the supposed certainties which they take for granted. It does all this by offering profound insights into the character and limits of both political activity and political theory in the modern world."--BOOK JACKET

Political Leadership in Liberal and Democratic Theory Joseph V. Femia; András Körösényi; Gabriella Slomp Exeter, UK: Imprint Academic, Exeter, UK, ©2009
The working hypothesis of this book is that the issue of leadership is neglected by mainstream democratic and liberal theories. This deficiency has especially become evident in the last three or four decades, which have witnessed a revival of deontological liberalism and radical theories of participatory and 'deliberative' democracy. The contributors examine, discuss and evaluate descriptive, analytical and normative arguments regarding the role of leadership in liberal and democratic theory. The volume seeks to provoke debate and to foster new research on the significance and function of leaders in liberal democracies. The book (as a whole and in its constitutive chapters) works on two levels. First, it aims to expose the lack of systematic treatment of leadership in mainstream liberal and democratic theory. Second, it explores the reasons for this neglect. Overall, the book tries to convince the reader that liberal and democratic theories should revive the issue of leadership.

Moral Mind: A Study of What it is to be Human (Societas) Haslam, Henry Societas Imprint Academic, Societas: Essays in political & cultural criticism, Charlottesville, VA, ©2005

The reality and validity of the moral sense—which ordinary people take for granted—took a battering in the last century. Materialist trends in philosophy, decline in religious faith, and a loosening of traditional moral constraints contributed to a shift in public attitudes, with many decent honest folk both aware of a questioning of moral claims and uneasy with a world that has no place for the moral dimension. Haslam shows how important the moral sense is to the human personality and exposes the weakness in much current thinking that suggests otherwise. His goal is to help the reader to a mature and confident understanding of the moral mind, which constitutes an essential part of what it is to be human.

Library Journal

Haslam, a geologist interested in philosophy, distinguishes our subjective preferences about morality from objective values. Everyone has personal preferences, he asserts, but human beings also endeavor to find out what genuinely ought to be done. How can our moral sense be explained? Haslam believes we are the products of evolution but that Darwinian natural selection does not fully account for our moral convictions. He argues that evolution better explains instinctive behavior than the acts of choice characteristic of morality. We can explain some human good behaviour, he continues, by pointing to parallels with animals, but not our entire moral sense. In like fashion, custom accounts for some but not all of morality. There is a great deal about objective morality that remains a mystery, he concludes. Haslam also provides an astute discussion of how scientific and religious views of morality are related. Marking a true advance in the discussion of evolutionary explanations of morality, his book is highly recommended for all collections.-David Gordon, Bowling Green State Univ., OH Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

nexusstc/Art and Enlightenment: Scottish Aesthetics in the 18th Century/3e94bfb2aae4ea441cfc0679430f26b2.pdf
Art and Enlightenment: Scottish Aesthetics in the 18th Century (Library of Scottish Philosophy) (Library of Scottish Philosophy) edited and introduced by Jonathan Friday Imprint Academic, Library of Scottish philosophy, Exeter UK ; Charlottesville VA, 2004
Their inquiries revolved around a cluster of issues - the nature of taste, beauty and the sublime, how qualitative differences operate upon the mind through the faculty of taste, and how aesthetic sensibility can be improved through education. This volume brings together and provides contextual introductions to the most significant 18th century writing on the philosophy of art. From the pioneering study of beauty by Francis Hutcheson, through Hume's seminal essays on the standard of taste and tragedy, to the end of the tradition in Dugald Stewart, we are swept up in the debate about art and its value that fascinated the philosophers of enlightenment Scotland - and continues to do so to this day.

Church And State: The English Experience (philosophy And Religion) Adrian Hastings, Church In Africa1450-1950 Exeter, UK: University of Exeter Press, The Prideaux lectures for 1990, Prideaux lectures ;, 1990, Exeter, UK, England, 1991
The prestigious Prideaux Lectures were given in 1990 by Adrian Hastings, published here in volume form. With a distinctive and fresh approach, he surveys the vast range of interactions between the Christian church and the English state. The central theme Hastings develops is the tension between the intrinsic dualism within the Christian approach to church and state and the pressure towards monism inherent in the Reformation establishment. Church and State provides a frame of reference, at once historical and theological, for a subject that is too frequently discussed merely descriptively or moralistically.

English Poetry Before Chaucer (Exeter Medieval Texts and Studies LUP) Swanton, Michael James; Swanton, Michael James. English literature before Chaucer Liverpool University Press, Exeter medieval English texts and studies, Rev. and updated ed., Exeter, UK, England, 2002
'Swanton writes with real intelligence and great energy, and many of his brief essays on individual works become quite powerful statements . . . he is a sympathetic and at times superb reader of the poetry.' Speculum A new and completely revised edition of this authoritative work, intended to encourage personal appreciation and independent appraisal by students of English. This is a stimulating introduction to the poetry composed in an age that witnessed fundamental cultural developments: the emergence of the English from among the warring tribes of Europe, their conversion to Christianity, the development of feudalism and the chivalric myth, the military adventure of the Crusades, and the growth of a vigorous citizen class in the burgeoning towns of England.

Your Brain's Politics: How the Science of Mind Explains the Political Divide (Societas) Lakoff, George, author; Wehling, Elisabeth, author Imprint Academic; Societas, Societas : essays in political et cultural criticism, Exeter, UK, 2016
"At first glance, issues like economic inequality, healthcare, climate change, and abortion seem unrelated. However, when thinking and talking about them, people reliably fall into two camps: conservative and liberal. What explains this divide? Why do conservatives and liberals hold the positions they do? And what is the conceptual nature of those who decide elections, commonly called the 'political middle'? The answers are profound. They have to do with how our minds and brains work. Political attitudes are the product of what cognitive scientists call Embodied Cognition -- the grounding of abstract thought in everyday world experience. Clashing beliefs about how to run nations largely arise from conflicting beliefs about family life: conservatives endorse a strict father and liberals a nurturant parent model. So-called 'middle' voters are not in the middle at all. They are morally biconceptual, divided between both models, and as a result highly susceptible to moral political persuasion. In this brief introduction, Lakoff and Wehling reveal how cognitive science research has advanced our understanding of political thought and language, forcing us to revise common folk theories about the rational voter."--Provided by publisher

Of Good Character : Explorating Virtues and Values in 3-25 Year-olds Arthur, James, 1957- Andrews UK, Andrews UK Ltd., Exeter, UK, 2010
There has been across the world a resurgence of interest in ‘values education’ (values education is known internationally by a number of names) at school education, research and policy levels. In Australia the Australian Values Education projects led to the government initiating a number of large scale curriculum developments and resources projects as part of its expressed policy to introduce values education programmes in all schools. UNESCO has its own values education programme, entitled Living Values that functions in 84 countries. In the United Kingdom, the introduction of the National Curriculum in England has led to a major effort to develop what is variously described as a ‘moral’ or ‘ethical’ perspective. In England, the education of the moral child has been both an underpinning aspiration of the National Curriculum and a focus of particular curricular subjects, most notably citizenship education. The purpose of this book is to make a contribution to this emerging field, and to do so in two ways. First, it presents a substantial body of empirical evidence, the results of the largest UK study to date of what parents, pupils and teachers are thinking and doing in the area of moral education and, more specifically, ‘character education’. Second, it seeks to elucidate more clearly what those involved in the debate mean by the terms used. The terms used in relation to moral and character education are not fixed, and are sometimes used apparently in different senses, by different contributors, and for different purposes. As a result of these two features, the present work offers some suggestions about possible ways forward in developing concrete proposals for moral education, in particular in identifying an appropriate language that can be used by practitioners in situations ‘on the ground’.

The Paranormal and the Politics of Truth : A Sociological Account Jeremy Northcote Andrews UK Limited 2013, 1, 2013
This book is based on the author's ten-year research into the politics of belief surrounding paranormal ideas. Through a detailed examination of the participants, issues, strategies and underlying factors that constitute the contemporary paranormal debate, the book explores the struggle surrounding the status of paranormal phenomena. It examines, on the one hand, how the principal arbiters of religious and scientific truths - the Church and the academic establishment - reject paranormal ideas as "occult" and "pseudo-scientific", and how, on the other hand, paranormal enthusiasts attempt to resist such labels and instead establish paranormal ideas as legitimate knowledge.
The author contends that the paranormal debate is the outcome of wider discursive processes that are concerned with the construction and negotiation of truth in Western society generally. More specifically, the debate is seen as an aspect of the "boundary work" that defines the contours of religious and scientific orthodoxy.
The book paves new ground in understanding the nature of belief relating to a topic that has long held fascination to academics and lay people alike - paranormal ideas. It develops a discursive framework for understanding a contemporary social phenomenon, hence placing the study at the cutting edge of ethnographic development that seeks to integrate discursive perspectives with empirical accounts of sociological phenomena. Most importantly, the study is intended to contribute to the debate surrounding communicative action, by outlining a discursive perspective on the negotiation of ideational differences that goes beyond the incommensurability theories that have dominated the sociology of communication and knowledge. The Scottish Political System Since Devolution : From New Politics to the New Scottish Government Cairney, Paul, 1973- Andrews UK, Andrews UK Ltd., Luton, 2012
This book presents a narrative of Scottish politics since devolution in 1999. It compares eight years of coalition government under Scottish Labour and the Scottish Liberal Democrats with four years of Scottish National Party minority government. It outlines the relative effect of each government on Scottish politics and public policy in various contexts, including: high expectations for new politics that were never fully realised; the influence of, and reactions from, the media and public; the role of political parties; the Scottish Governments relations with the UK Government, EU institutions, local government, quasi-governmental and non-governmental actors; and, the finance available to fund policy initiatives. It then considers how far Scotland has travelled on the road to constitutional change, comparing the original devolved framework with calls for independence or a new devolution settlement. The book draws heavily on information produced since 1999 by the Scottish Devolution Monitoring project (which forms one part of the devolution monitoring project led by the Constitution Unit, UCL) and is supplemented by new research on public policy, minority government, intergovernmental relations and constitutional change. Paul Cairney is Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Aberdeen

Forgiveness: How Religion Endangers Morality (societas) R. A. Sharpe Exeter, UK ; Charlottesvile, VA: Imprint Academic, Societas, Exeter, UK, ©2007
"In his book The Moral Case against Religious Belief (1997), the author argued that some important virtues cease to be virtues at all when set in a religious context, and that, consequently, a religious life is, in many respects, not a good life to lead. In this sequel he takes up the theme again because 'the intervening decade has brought home to us the terrible results of religious conviction'. He writes in the Introduction: 'Most religious people are conventionally devout. Religion does not play a huge part in their everyday lives and their moral life is not continuously under its gaze. I regard this as a thoroughly good thing. ... My suspicion is that the more intense the religious devotion the more the morality is in danger.' ."--BOOK JACKET

The Athenian Option: Radical Reform for the House of Lords (Sortition and Public Policy) Anthony Barnett and Peter Carty Exeter, UK ; Charlottesville, VA; Imprint Academic, Andrews UK Ltd., Exeter, UK, 2008
Two essays, printed back to back in a single volume, offer complementary solutions to the democratic deficit in Britain and the USA. In his book The Party's Over: Blueprint for a Very English Revolution (2004), Keith Sutherland questioned the role of the party in the post-ideological age and concluded that it would be better for government ministers to be appointed by headhunters and held to account by a people's parliament selected by lot. This completely revised and updated edition includes a study of the recent literature on deliberative polling. The American founders proposed that their legislature should be'an exact portrait, in miniature, of the people at large'. Whether or not this was true at the time, the exponential growth of the population, skyrocketing campaign funding, the power of pressure groups, the grease of the pork-barrel and the dominance of charisma and demagoguery means that the US Constitution could now better be described as a kleptocracy. This pioneering essay proposes selecting Congressional members by random lot (leaving the Senate and Presidency unchanged) to'restore a direct, powerful voice in Washington to the whole of America'. Originally published in 1985, this new edition includes an introduction by political scientist Peter Stone.

In Comes I: Performance, Memory And Landscape (Exeter Performance Studies) (Exeter Performance Studies) Pearson, Mike, 1949- UNIV OF EXETER PRESS; University of Exeter Press, EXETER PERFORMANCE STUDIES, EXETER, Unknown, 2007-01-01

In Comes I explores performance and land, biography and locality, memory and place. The book reflects on performances past and present, taking the form of a series of excursions into the agricultural landscape of eastern England, and drawing from archaeology, geomorphology, folklore, and local and family history.
Mike Pearson, a leading theatre artist and solo-performer, returns to the landscape of his childhood – off the beaten track in Lincolnshire – and uses it as a mnemonic to reflect widely upon performance theory and practice. Rather than focusing on author, period and genre as is conventional in the study of drama, the book takes region as its optic, acknowledging the affective ties between people and place.

Offering new approaches to the study of performance, Pearson integrates intensely personal narrative with analytical reflection, juxtaposing anecdote with theoretical insight, dramatic text with interdisciplinary perception. The performances, ranging from folk drama to contemporary site-specific work, are seen in the light of their relationship to their cultural and physical environment.

The Big Show looks at the role played by cinema in British cultural life during World War One.

In writing the definitive account of film exhibition and reception in Britain in the years 1914 to 1918, Michael Hammond shows how the British film industry and British audiences responded to the traumatic effects of the Great War.

The author contends that the War’s significant effect was to expedite the cultural acceptance of cinema into the fabric of British social life. As a result, by 1918, cinema had emerged as the predominant leisure form in British social life. Through a consideration of the films, the audience, the industry and the various regulating and censoring bodies, the book explores the impact of the war on the newly established cinema culture. It also studies the contribution of the new medium to the public’s perception of the war
