From Grandmother to Granddaughter : Salvadoran Women's Stories Michael Gorkin; Marta Pineda; Gloria Leal Berkeley: University of California Press, University of California Press, Berkeley, 2000

The life histories and testimonies of nine Salvadoran women from different generations shape this intimate portrayal of contemporary El Salvador. The authors interviewed a grandmother, mother, and granddaughter from three Salvadoran families: La Familia Nuñez, members of the upper class; La Familia Rivas, from El Salvador's growing middle class; and La Familia García, from the campo, the Salvadoran peasantry. The voices we hear convey a deep sense of the world of Salvadoran women and how life is lived in that Central American country today.
Each woman tells her own life story, and interspersed with recollections of childhood, marriage, and childrearing are revealing accounts of El Salvador's turbulent political past and present. Reflected in the stories are the vast changes in educational and occupational opportunities for women and the shifts in male-female relationships. Class differences are still a fundamental part of Salvadoran life, but changes are occurring in this area as well.
From Grandmother to Granddaughter is a vivid and authentic portrait of today's El Salvador that convincingly illustrates how individual lives can reflect the larger changes within a society.

Days of honey, days of onion : the story of a Palestinian family in Israel Michael Gorkin Berkeley: University of California Press, Berkeley, California, 1993
This study of Israel's Palestinian Arabs is based upon the author's observation of the family of Abu Ahmad, a Palestinian clan living in a village in central Israel. The activities and religious rituals of the family are related, along with the feelings of tension in the wake of the intifada. Through oral testimonies, readers learn how life under the Israeli military government (1949-66), which confiscated enormous tracts of land from native Arabs, left an indelible mark on the family, and how the intifada triggered smoldering anger among family members.

Three Mothers, Three Daughters: Palestinian Women's Stories (Literature of the Middle East) Michael Gorkin; Rafiqa Othman; American Council of Learned Societies University of California Press, University of California Press, Berkeley, 1996
This remarkable collection of oral histories from six Palestinian women, three mothers and three of their daughters, affords an unparalleled view into the daily lives of women who have lived, and continue to live, through a turbulent and rapidly changing era. In recording these stories, Michael Gorkin and Rafiqa Othman have preserved each woman's distinctive voice, capturing in vivid and moving detail a broad range of experienceeverything from recollections of native villages to an account of incarceration as a political prisoner. Highly personal events such as courting, marriage, and childbirth are interwoven with memories of upheavals such as the wars of 1948 and 1967. The women speak with surprising candor about conflicts between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, men and women, Arabs and Jews. These beautifully written narratives bear witness to the power of Palestinian culture in sustaining the often difficult lives of women. The book also provides brilliant testimony to the experience of living in the midst of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Michael Gorkin, a Jewish-American psychologist who lives in Israel, and Rafiqa Othman, a Palestinian special education teacher, have collected the narratives from different cultural and geographic locations within the boundaries of historical Palestineincluding East Jerusalem, a refugee camp on the West Bank, and an Arab village within Israel. With surprising intimacy, the mothers and daughters discuss their views about sex, marriage, and child-rearing; ideas about themselves and their relationship to God, their families, and their homeland; and questions of shame, devotion, freedom, and honor. In the preface, introduction and epilogue, Gorkin and Othman frame the stories and describe the project. The linked stories of mothers and daughters attest to the profound changes that have occurred in the lives of Palestinian women during this centuryin the areas of education, work, political involvement and personal freedom. In addition to delineating this astonishing historical and cultural transformation, the stories create lasting images of the people these women have loved and hated, the pleasures they have enjoyed, the dangers they have survived, and the hopes they continue to cherish.

El Campesino: Life and Death in Soviet Russia Gorkin, Valentin Gonzalez & Julian Lion Books, 1953
El Campesino: Life and Death in the Soviet Union, first published in 1952, is the dramatic autobiographical account of Spanish revolutionary Valentín Gonzalez (1904-1983). The book (also titledListen Comrades: Life and Death in the Soviet Union) details Gonzalez’ experiences in the Spanish Civil War, his conversion to communism, and his flight to the Soviet Union following the Nationalist victory. In Russia, however, he is eventually arrested, tortured by the N.K.V.D., and sent to Vorkuta labor camp, a notorious part of the Soviet gulag located north of the Arctic Circle. Gonzalez, thoroughly disillusioned, manages to survive the brutality of the gulag, escaping Vorkuta (only to be recaptured and placed in a nightmarish cell filled with rats and snakes), and eventually completing his sentence and making his way across the border of the Soviet Union and into freedom in the west.

Reading, Writing, and Proving: A Closer Look at Mathematics (Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics) Ulrich Daepp; Pamela Gorkin; NetLibrary, Inc Springer-verlag new york Inc, Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics, 1, 2003
The reader of this book is probably about to teach or take a "first course in proof techniques." Students are taking this course because they like mathematics, and the authors hope to keep it that way. At this point, they have an intuitive sense of why things are true, but not the exposure to detailed and critical thinking necessary to survive in the mathematical world. The authors have written this book to bridge the gap. Often, students beginning this course have little training in rigorous mathematical reasoning; they need guidance. At the end, they are where they should be; on their own. The authors aim is to teach the students to read, write and do mathematics independently, and to do it with clarity, precision, and care.
