Roman Historiography: An Introduction to its Basic Aspects and Development (Blackwell Introductions to the Classical World) Andreas Mehl; translated by Hans-Friedrich Mueller Blackwell Publishing, Incorporated; Wiley-Blackwell; Wiley-Interscience, Blackwell introductions to the classical world -- 11, Blackwell introductions to the classical world -- 11., Chichester, West Sussex, Malden, MA, England, 2011
"Roman historiography : an introduction to its basic aspects and development presents a comprehensive introduction to the development of Roman historical writings in the ancient world. Andreas Mehl traces the arc of ancient historical writing about Rome from its origins with the authors of clan history and fragmentary annalists to the writings of Byzantine scholar Procopius, the last major historian of the ancient world. Rooting his survey in the context of its Greek predecessors, and within the broader frame Roman literature and society, Mehl discusses every historical writer of significance in the ancient Roman era and provides much more than simple biographical detail. Also considered are essential themes such as genre, teleology, the idea of Rome, and exemplary moral conduct. By paying scrupulous attention to political context and religious developments throughout the ancient world, Mehl reveals the evolution and interpenetration of both pagan and Christian historiography. This title offers a wealth of illuminating insights into the origins and development of the crucial historical writings of the living witnesses to the greatest empire the world has ever known"--Provided by publisher.

We will drill the earlier Homeric forms. The goal for the Koine readings is to read, to understand, and to appreciate that languages can say the same thing in more than one way, especially as they evolve over time. One key feature of Koine Greek is the use of the definite article-that is, the word "the"-which is, in origin, a weakened form of the demonstrative "this." The following sentences have been altered slightly to reflect Koine rather than Homeric usage. Translate them. For reference, the declension of the feminine word "the" in the singular in Koine is shown at right. 1 ἔχει ἡ καλὴ θεὰ τὴν καλὴν βουλήν; 2 ἡ δεινὴ κλαγγή ἐστιν ἐκ τῆς θαλάσσης. 3 αἱ καλαὶ θεαί εἰσι φίλαι τῇ ψυχῇ τῆς θεᾶς τῆς δεινῆς θαλάσσης. ## Singular Nom. ἡ Gen. τῆς ## Dat. τῇ Acc. τήν ### 5.1 morphoLoGy Conjugate and translate φαίνω ("appear") in the present tense. ### 5.2 GreeK to enGLIsh 1 ἀείδομεν βουλὰς θεάων πολλάων. 2 κλαγγὴ δεινὴ κακῆς θαλάσσης οὐχ ἁνδάνει ψυχῇ θεᾶς. ## VocabuLary ἀείδω: sing, sing of, hymn, chant. ἀν-(before vowels), ἀ-(before consonants): an inseparable prefix that means not, un-, dis-, -less, without. ἁνδάνω: please (with dative), be pleasing to.

Roman Religion In Valerius Maximus Hans-Friedrich Mueller Taylor & Francis Group, 2011
DID THE GODS OF ROME CARE ABOUT PERSONAL MORALITY? Valerius Maximus was an indefatigable collector of historical anecdotes illustrating vice and virtue; his Memorable Deeds and Sayings are unparalleled as a source for the opinions of Romans in the early empire on a vast range of subjects. Mueller's study focuses on what Valerius can tell us about contemporary Roman attitudes to religion, attacking several orthodoxies along the way. He argues that Roman religion could be deeply emotional, that it was possible to believe passionately in the divinity of the emperor – even when, like Tiberius, he was still alive – and that Rome's gods and religious rituals had an important role in fostering conventional morality. The study further explores elements of ancient rhetoric, Roman historiography, and Tiberian Rome. The fact that Valerius was a contemporary of Jesus means his work is also valuable in reflecting the attitudes and beliefs of the ruling class to which Christ and his followers were politically subject, and which formed the background to the growth and persecution of Christianity.

Revisit a world of conquest, exploration, and imperial adventure with this Modern Library eBook bundle that includes Edward Gibbon’s The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Francis Parkman’s Montcalm and Wolfe, William H. Prescott’s History of the Conquest of Mexico, and Theodore Roosevelt’s The Naval War of 1812.   THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE (ABRIDGED)   Edward Gibbon’s masterpiece, which narrates the history of the Roman Empire from the second to the fifteenth centuries, is widely considered the greatest work of history ever written. This abridgment retains the full scope of the original, while emphasizing elements ignored in all other abridgments—in particular the role of religion in the empire and the rise of Islam.   MONTCALM AND WOLFE   The result of more than forty years of passionate research, Montcalm and Wolfe is the epic story of Europe’s struggle for dominance of the New World. Thought by many to be Francis Parkman’s greatest work, it is a riveting read and an essential part of any military history collection.   HISTORY OF THE CONQUEST OF MEXICO   William H. Prescott’s sweeping account of Cortés’s subjugation of the Aztec people has endured as a landmark work of scholarship and dramatic storytelling. This pioneering study presents a compelling view of the clash of civilizations that reverberates in Latin America to this day.   THE NAVAL WAR OF 1812   Published when its author, Theodore Roosevelt, was only twenty-three years old, The Naval War of 1812 was immediately hailed as a literary and scholarly triumph, and it is still considered the definitive book on the subject. Roosevelt’s inimitable style and robust narrative make The Naval War of 1812 enthralling, illuminating, and utterly essential to every armchair historian.

Latin 101: Learning a Classical Language Hans-Friedrich Mueller Dover; Dover Publications, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2013
Since 1867, students of Latin and their teachers have turned to this famous guide for instruction on grammar and usage. The work of a distinguished professor who taught classics for six decades, it is celebrated for its lucid and comprehensive treatment. The first third of the text focuses on etymology, exploring inflections of the substantive and adjective; adverbs, numerals, and pronouns; inflection of the verb; and the formation of words. Subsequent chapters advance to syntax, examining simple and compound sentences; the arrangement of words and clauses; figures of syntax and rhetoric; and principal rules of syntax. The text concludes with an extended section on prosody that discusses and illustrates the conventions of Latin verse. Helpful indexes feature information on everyday Roman life, including explanations of the calendar, weights and measures, money, and names. No Latin reference collection is complete without this volume, which is equally useful for classroom and independent study.

Mit den Händen sehen: Mein Leben und meine Medizin Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt; Friedrich-Karl Sandmann; Jakob Strobel y Serra Friedrich-Karl Sandmann, Onleihe. E-Book, 1. Originalausgabe, Berlin, 2018

Fuehrungs-Spiel Peters, Bernhard; Hermann, Hans-Dieter; Mueller-Wirth, Moritz Heyne Verlag, München, 2013
