Contest for cultural authority : Hazlitt, Coleridge, and the distresses of the Regency Lapp, Robert Keith. Detroit, Mich.: Wayne State University Press, Detroit, Mich, Michigan, 1999
Contest for Cultural Authority takes a fresh look at one of the scandals of literary William Hazlitt's harshly satirical reviews of Samuel Taylor Coleridge in the Regency press. Traditionally deplored as "malignant" personal attacks on a former friend, Hazlitt's eight reviews of Coleridge's writings between 1816 and 1818 engage such landmark works as Christabel, The Statesman's Manual, and the Biographia Literaria, harnessing the rising power of Regency review-criticism to devastating effect. By taking seriously Hazlitt's own classification of these articles as "political essays," and by relocating them within the turbulent public debates of the late Regency, Robert Keith Lapp discovers in them an indispensable critique of Coleridge's conservative response to the post-Waterloo crisis known as the "Distresses of the Country." Using cultural history to revise literary history, Lapp discovers in Hazlitt's reviews of Coleridge a debate between two prominent authors that brings into sharp focus larger forces of political, commercial, and literary struggle at a moment of crisis in British history. Once Hazlitt's voice is recovered in this debate with Coleridge, the struggle between two of British Romanticism's foremost critics comes to epitomize a contest for cultural authority between a post-Enlightenment Romanticism of libertarian protest, rooted in the democratic force of "common sense" and "public opinion," and a visionary Romanticism that asserts the free subjectivity of "Poetic Genius." Lapp resituates Hazlitt's reviews of Coleridge within such contexts as the bristling arena of political debate, the volatile marketplace for literature and literary criticism, and the shifting hierarchy of genres and modes by which discursive authority was performed within the public sphere. New light is thus shed on such colorful Regency episodes as the Christabel controversy and the Wat Tyler affair as well as on such period issues as the struggle to address emergent and divergent reading audiences, the role of satire in review-criticism, and the rise of public lecturing.

The Day-Star of Liberty: William Hazlitt's Radical Style (Literary Studies) Tom Paulin Faber and Faber, Literary Studies, 1, 1998
In The Day-Star of Liberty, Tom Paulin sets out to place William Hazlitt-master of the essay form, the first major art and drama critic, and one of the most outstanding political and literary journalists Britain has ever produced-in his rightful position as a great prose writer and an exemplary literary artist. Not only are the importance of Hazlitt's Irish background and the significance of the Unitarian culture in which he was brought up central to this portrait but the sheer intellectual joy that is evident in Hazlitt's writing and that he wished his readers to share is communicated with comparable energy and relish through Paulin's own prose. A work of critical restitution, The Day-Star of Liberty restores an unjustly neglected figure to the literary canon and shows the means by which Hazlitt's creative genius transformed journalism and criticism into art forms, making it possible for Hazlitt's collected works to be read as one of the great Romantic autobiographies. 16 Pages of Black-and-White Art Notes/Bibliography/Index Tom Paulin was born in Leeds, England, in 1949. He is the G. M. Young Lecturer in English Literature at Hertford College, Oxford University.

Prose in the Age of Poets: Romanticism and Biographical Narrative from Johnson to De Quincey (Anniversary Collection) Annette Wheeler Cafarelli University of Pennsylvania Press Anniversary Collection, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), Philadelphia, 2015
In Prose in the Age of Poets, Annette Wheeler Cafarelli demonstrates that nonfictional narrative of the time was a central expression of British Romanticism. The rise of interest in the individual traditionally associated with Romantic autobiography was actually part of a wider cultural interest in biography—especially literary biography.Following Johnson's lead in the Lives of the Poets, virtually every major writer of the period experimented with sequences of short, anecdotal lives that became a characteristic Romantic vehicle for discussing theories of creativity, canon, and the place of the poet in society. The Romantics took in new directions the examination of the relation of artists'lives and works, biographers and their subjects, and texts and their readers. Romantic biography, Cafarelli contends, offers a perspective from which to reconsider conventional boundaries of genre, periodization, and the movement from Neoclassicism to Romanticism. In examining the Romantics as prose writers and biographers, Cafarelli explores the affiliations between Romantic theories of reading and writing and twentieth-century critical methodologies. She situates the biographical writings of the major poets, including Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Byron, in the context of detailed analyses of biographies by Johnson, Hazlitt, De Quincey, Scott, Southey, and other lesser-known contemporaries.Prose in the Age of Poets will interest scholars and students of Romanticism, Johnson, biography and autobiography, and narrative theory.

Metaphysical Hazlitt : Bicentenary Essays Uttara Natarajan; Tom Paulin; Duncan Wu Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2005
The rediscovery and restitution of William Hazlitt as a canonical Romantic author has been among the latest and most significant developments in present-day Romantic studies. This volume, a collection of previously unpublished essays by the foremost scholars in the field presents Hazlitt as a philosophical, and not simply a 'familiar' essayist. It offers a comprehensive statement of the significance and transmission of Hazlitt's philosophical principles, in his own work and in that of his contemporaries and succeeding writers. This book is an essential contribution to a vital new aspect of Romantic studies and shows Hazlitt to be, as his memorial claims, 'The first (unanswered) Metaphysician of the age'.

Romantics and Renegades : The Poetics of Political Reaction Charles W. Mahoney Palgrave Macmillan UK : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, September 6, 2002
Romantics and Renegades examines the abiding crux of romantic criticism: the political apostasies of the Lake poets (Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Southey) as they renounced the revolutionary Jacobinism of their youth in the 1790s in order to claim the high ground of Regency Toryism in the 1810s. Central to this scandal is the figure of William Hazlitt, the literary critic who policed their betrayals in his vigilant exposure of their political and poetical inconsistencies. Mahoney's analysis provides new insight into this abiding critical riddle through close historical and figural readings of the rhetoric of romantic apostasy. Erscheinungsdatum: 15.11.2002

Romantic Shakespeare : from stage to page Han, Younglim, 1957- Madison, NJ: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press ; London: Associated University Presses, Madison, NJ, London, New Jersey, 2000
"This book attempts to link three British Romantics to three reader-response theorists of the twentieth century in accordance with the theoretical assumptions shared between their notions of interpretation: Charles Lamb to Wolfgang Iser, Samuel Taylor Coleridge to Stanley Fish, and William Hazlitt to Robert Jauss. It examines what Romanticism and reader-oriented criticism share in common: elitism and holism. These two criticisms are based on the presumption that only a socially and intellectually elite reader is able to view the author's language in terms of its organic relationship with the text as a whole. The Romantics focused on the interpretive reproduction of Shakespeare through sympathetic identification with his characters."--BOOK JACKET.

Romantic cruxes : the English essayists and the spirit of the age Mcfarland, Thomas , 1926- Oxford: Clarendon Press ; New York: Oxford University Press, Oxford, New York, England, 1987

Although the English essayists Lamb, Hazlitt, and De Quincey are not customarily examined in the context of European Romanticism, their shared connection with the intellectual upheaval of that movement is undeniable. McFarland's study is the first to consider the essayists in this light, relating them to the larger engagements of their age. As Romantic Cruxes reveals, each writer was a figure deeply embattled amid the disruptions and accumulating stresses that defined Romanticism; each was more intense, darker, and more symbolic of larger situations in human experience than received opinion would have it. And each essayist projected his personality and experience into idiosyncratic statement that has won its author a lasting place in the pantheon of cultural achievement. Unlike most studies of these authors, which tend toward straightforward biography, simple appreciation, or narrowly historical treatments, this book illuminates both their statement and their achievement in the fullest possible terms.
