Reform of Higher Education in Europe Jürgen Enders; H. F. de Boer; Don F Westerheijden; Centrum voor Studies van het Hoger Onderwijsbeleid (Enschede, Netherlands) Sense Publishers, Brill Academic Publishers, Rotterdam, 2011
The volume 'Reform of higher education in Europe' is published in celebration of CHEPS' 25th anniversary. All contributors to this book are working at CHEPS, and bring their extensive knowledge of the deep-seated reforms and changes to the field of higher education and research over the last 25 years. The chapters are each devoted to a detailed policy analysis deeply rooted in CHEPS' quarter-century programme of theoretical and empirical research. Some contributions cover key themes of concern since CHEPS' early years, including state-university relationships, quality assurance and funding. Other contributions cover more contemporary higher education policy issues, including European reform initiatives (innovation, the Bologna Process, doctoral training and the Erasmus programme) and debates around higher education institutions' evolving functions, including the university's third mission and the research function of universities of applied sciences. What unifies all chapters is their recognition that policy success is dependent on smart implementation grounded in a comprehensive understanding of highly complex policy processes. The book as a whole offers clear descriptions and analyses of how policy processes are implemented through co-ordinated institutional and stakeholder interventions. This volume seeks to enhance academic and policy-maker understanding of Europe's evolving higher education system as it emerges as a cornerstone of the contemporary knowledge society.

Pathogen Indexing Technologies (Volume 23) (Advances in Botanical Research, Volume 23) S. H. De Boer; John H. Andrews; Inez C. Tommerup Academic Press, Incorporated, Elsevier Ltd., London, 1996
1 online resource (viii, 317 pages) : Significant advancements have been made in pathogen detection technologies during the last decade. Indexing of plants and plant parts for the presence of specific pathogens has been most effective in some instances for avoiding and/or controlling disease. The new technologies for detecting low levels of pathogens will increase the value of indexing as a tool for plant disease control. Providing an overview of the status of detection technology, this volume is directed not only to scientists and students interested in detection technology, but also to those interested in formulating and implementing disease control and quarantine regulations. This book provides a conceptual framework which presents the current scientific literature, state-of-the-art assessments, and speculations on future developments and requirements of pathogen indexing methods. Chapters cover the different pathogen groups, review current practices in areas where detection technology has become important, and provide perspectives on how indexing technologies can be applied, how well it has worked, and which problems remain. Statistical treatment of detection limits, sampling strategies, risk assessment, cost, standardization, and quality control are also covered Includes bibliographical references and indexes Print version record

Physics of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials K. H. Jürgen Buschow; F. R. de Boer Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2003, 2012
In my ongoing review of the literature in this subject area, I had this book pulled by the library. Let me get the negative aspects of this review out of the way first. The writing style clearly suggests that the book may have been collated from course lecture notes and material. In lectures, material is presented as a part of a lecture, with a lot of spoken words to add explanation and feeling to densely written notes. In this case, the book is densely packed with information, and a little extra text to help explain things would have made things more readable. This is a typical sin in specialized-subject graduate-level texts. On the positive side, this book covers a good amount of ground in a lot of theoretical detail. To give an idea as to what is covered, here are the chapter titles: 1. Introduction 2. The Origin of Atomic Moments 3. Paramagnetism of Free Ions 4. The Magnetically Ordered State 5. Crystal Fields 6. Diamagnetism 7. Itinerant-Electron Magnetism 8. Some Basic Concepts and Units 9. Measurement Techniques 10. Caloric Effects in Magnetic Materials 11. Magnetic Anisotropy 12. Permanent Magnets 13. High-Density Recording Materials 14. Soft Magnetic Materials 15. Invar Alloys 16. Magnetostrictive Materials Given what my field is, I was pleasantly surprised to find notes on the manufacturing process for NdFeB permanent magnets. The discussions on domain phenomena seemed complete and helpful. All in all, the theoretical approach to the subject matter gives the book much more of a physicist's feel, rather than the more practical feel of an engineer. This seems to be a good reference on the subject matter.

after heated and often bitter debates, SIEBENMANN'S opinion finally prevailed, i. e. , a contribution to cochlear lesions due to vibrations of the floor transmitted via bone conduction could not be demonstrated. For one thing, it was hard to see how appreciable amounts of energy could reach the ears in this manner, considering the attenuation that is bound to occur across each of the many joints along the pathway involved. In some older audiological surveys conducted in industry (e. g. , TEMKIN, 1933), groups of workmen were found who displayed signs of apical-turn lesions, i. e. , low-tone hearing losses for air and for bone. Such lesions could not be expected to results from exposure to air-borne sounds because of the low-frequency attenu ation of the middle ear. Although WITTMAACK'S explanation, which was frequently invoked in such reports, does no longer appear tenable, such apical-turn lesions could conceivably be caused by bone conduction components of high-intensity noise in the sense of BEKESY (1948). - As far as I am aware of, no newer studies have been conducted in this problem area, and the older experiments and/or surveys were done at times before signal parameters could be precisely controlled or measured. A detailed, critical review of the older studies on the potential contribution of bone-conducted energy to industrial hearing loss and its underlying pathology may be found in Werner (1940) who, incidently, favored SIEBENMANN'S point of VIew. Beauty Is Our Business : A Birthday Salute to Edsger W. Dijkstra Krzysztof R. Apt, Frank S. de Boer, Ernst-Rüdiger Olderog (auth.), W. H. J. Feijen, A. J. M. van Gasteren, D. Gries, J. Misra (eds.) Springer New York, 10.1007/97, 1990
More than anything else, this book is a tribute to Edsger W. Dijkstra, on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday, by just a few of those fortunate enough to be influenced by him and his work and to be called his friend or relation, his master, colleague, or pupil. This book contains fifty-four technical contributions in different areas of endeavor, although many of them deal with an area of particular concern to Dijkstra: programming. Each contribution is relatively short and could be digested in one sitting. Together, they form a nice cross section of the discipline of programming at the beginning of the nineties. While many know of Dijkstra's technical contributions, they may not be aware of his ultimate goal, the mastery of complexity in mathematics and computing science. He has forcefully argued that beauty and elegance are essential to this mastery. The title of this book, chosen to reflect his ultimate goal, comes from a sentence in an article of his on some beautiful arguments using mathematical induction: " ... when we recognize the battle against chaos, mess, and unmastered complexity as one of computing sci- ence's major callings, we must admit that 'Beauty Is Our Business'."

Pathogen Indexing Technologies (Volume 23) (Advances in Botanical Research, Volume 23) J.A. Callow (Eds.) Elsevier, Academic Press, Advances in Botanical Research, Advances in Botanical Research 23, 1, 1996
Significant advancements have been made in pathogen detection technologies during the last decade. Statistical treatment of detection limits, sampling strategies, risk assessment, cost, standardization, and quality control are also covered.

This volume contains the plenary papers and a selection of short papers from the Seventh Annual RefoRC conference, which was held 1012 May 2017 in Wittenberg. The contributions concentrate on the effects of Luther's new theology and draw the lines from Luther's contemporaries into the early seventeenth century. Developments in art, catholic responses and Calvinistic reception are only some of the topics. The volume reflects the interdisciplinarity and inter-confessionality that characterizes present research on the 16th century reformations and underlines the fact that this research has not come to a conclusion in 2017. The papers in this conference volume point to lacunae and will certainly stimulate further research. nerve; subsequently, however, they concluded that the recordings had been from aberrant cells of the cochlear nucleus lying central to the glial margin of the VIII nerve (GALAMBOS and DAVIS, 1948). The first successful recordmgs from fibres of the cochlear nerve were made by TASAKI (1954) in the guinea pig. These classical but necessarily limited results were greatly extended by ROSE, GALAMBOS, and HUGHES (1959) in the cat cochlear nucleus and by KATSUKI and co-workers (KATSUKI et at., 1958, 1961, 1962) in the cat and monkey cochlear nerve. Perhaps the most significant developments have been the introduction of techniques for precise control of the acoustic stimulus and the quantitative analysis of neuronal response patterns, notably by the laboratories of KIANG (e. g. These developments have made possible a large number of quanti tative investigations of the behaviour of representative numbers of neurons at these levels of the peripheral auditory system under a wide variety of stimulus conditions. Most of the findings discussed herein have been obtained on anaesthetized cats. Where comparative data are available, substantially similar results have been obtained in other mammalian species (e. g. guinea pig, monkey, rat). Certain significant differences have been noted in lizards, frogs and fish as would be expect ed from the different morphologies of their organs of hearing (e. g.

Beauty Is Our Business: A Birthday Salute to Edsger W. Dijkstra (Monographs in Computer Science) Krzysztof R. Apt, Frank S. de Boer, Ernst-Rüdiger Olderog (auth.), W. H. J. Feijen, A. J. M. van Gasteren, D. Gries, J. Misra (eds.) Springer New York, Texts and Monographs in Computer Science, 0172-603X, Texts and monographs in computer science, New York, NY, New York State, 1990
More than anything else, this book is a tribute to Edsger W. The title of this book, chosen to reflect his ultimate goal, comes from a sentence in an article of his on some beautiful arguments using mathematical induction: __"... when we__ __recognize the battle against chaos, mess, and unmastered__ __complexity as one of computing sci__- __ence's major callings,__ __we must admit that 'Beauty Is Our Business'.__"

At the Synod of Dordrecht (1618–19), the deep questions of justification and faith, election and rejection, time and eternity, grace and free will, the individual and the body of Christ, Israel and the church, the acquisition of salvation through Christ and its application by His Spirit, baptism and regeneration, and especially the precise relationship between these, were at stake. These deep questions are addressed in this study. Lines are drawn to the historical, theological and political context of the time of the synod. Patristics and the Middle Ages are not absent, nor are the metaphysical questions related to these theological issues. Also the church polity of Dordt is discussed, especially the roots, influences and structures of its church order. This volume ends with a hermeneutical reflection on the way we confess the electing God today. Erscheinungsdatum: 13.06.2022

Critical companion to the Bible : a literary reference Martin H. Manser & David Barratt & Pieter J. Lalleman & Julius Steinberg [Manser, Martin H. & Barratt, David & Lalleman, Pieter J. & Steinberg, Julius] Facts On File, Incorporated, January 2008
<p><P>Critical Companion to the Bible examines the Bible as a work of literature, focusing on its language and verbal structures and on the imaginative quality of its thought. This invaluable resource is an essential addition to high school and college literature and religion classes.</p><h3>Library Journal</h3><p>The authors of this book, all established researchers in the field of biblical studies, have compiled a volume that best serves as an introduction to biblical literary criticism for high school students and a general adult audience. Part 1, Reading the Bible as Literature, serves as an introduction to all types of biblical criticism for Jewish, Catholic, and Protestant traditions. Part 2, Books of the Bible, covers every book for each tradition, and includes a general introduction to each book, a summary of the events, literary commentary on the book, and a list of the figures appearing in it. Entries in this part range from one to about ten pages in length and include black-and-white illustrations. Part 3, Related Entries, covers people, places, concepts, and themes not included in Part 2 or that appear across numerous books, such as Abraham, Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha, and biblical poetry. Appendixes include a chronology, lists of biblical books in various versions, a detailed bibliography, useful web sites, and a general index. BOTTOM LINE Although it does not meet the needs of upper-division university bible students or scholars, this work will serve its intended audience of high school students and lay readers owing to its approachable language and an eye-pleasing layout. Recommended for public libraries and high school and undergraduate libraries that support biblical literary criticism study.&mdash;Rosanne M. Cordell, Indiana Univ., South Bend</p>
