Cherise the Niece J. K. Benton Plume ; Turnaround [distributor, Penguin Random House LLC, [N.p.], 2008
Edward Gorey meets The Bunny Suicides in a murderously funny tale from the creator of It's Happy BunnyFrom the creator of the hugely successful It's Happy Bunny franchise comes a little piece of work named Cherise, who may be, it turns out, a not-so-nice niece. In the tradition of Edward Gorey's The Gashlycrumb Tinies, Jim Benton's first adult picture book, with hilarious rhymes and illustrations, is a darkly comic masterpiece of the macabre.“She was orphaned quite young In a mysterious way, Her parents just up and vanished one day.”The bloody footprints leading out of Cherise's bedroom are the first clue that perhaps the little darling with the bow in her hair is not an angel. As Cherise is shuttled from one aunt's home to another, her aunts vanish, meeting inventive and hysterical ends. With a killer punch line on its final page, Jim Benton's Cherise the Niece will leave readers laughing.

What do we know about dinosaurs, and how do we know it? How did dinosaurs grow, move, eat, and reproduce? Were they warm-blooded or cold-blooded? How intelligent were they? How are the various groups of dinosaurs related to each other, and to other kinds of living and extinct vertebrates? What can the study of dinosaurs tell us about the process of evolution? And why did typical dinosaurs become extinct? All of these questions, and more, are addressed in the new, expanded, second edition of The Complete Dinosaur. Written by many of the world's leading experts on the "fearfully great" reptiles, the book's 45 chapters cover what we have learned about dinosaurs, from the earliest discoveries of dinosaurs to the most recent controversies. Where scientific contention exists, the editors have let the experts agree to disagree. Copiously illustrated and accessible to all readers from the enthusiastic amateur to the most learned professional paleontologist, The Complete Dinosaur is a feast for serious dinosaur lovers everywhere.

The history of life : a very short introduction Benton, Michael J. Oxford University Press, USA, Very short introductions, 193, Great Clarendon Street, Oxford, 2008

Here is the extraordinary story of the unfolding of life on Earth, told by Michael J. Benton, a world-renowned authority on biodiversity. Ranging over four billion years, Benton weaves together the latest findings on fossils, earth history, evolutionary biology, and many other fields to highlight the great leaps that enabled life to evolve from microbe to human—big breakthroughs that made whole new ways of life possible—including cell division and multicellularity, hard skeletons, the move to land, the origin of forests, the move to the air. He describes the mass extinctions, especially the Permian, which obliterated 90% of life, and he sheds light on the origins of human beings, and of the many hominids that went before us. He ends by pointing out that studying the past helps us to predict the future: what happens if the atmosphere warms by 5 degrees? What happens if we destroy much of the biodiversity on Earth? These things have happened before, Benton notes. We need only look to the distant past to know the future of life on Earth.

About the Series: Combining authority with wit, accessibility, and style, Very Short Introductions offer an introduction to some of life's most interesting topics. Written by experts for the newcomer, they demonstrate the finest contemporary thinking about the central problems and issues in hundreds of key topics, from philosophy to Freud, quantum theory to Islam.

This book contains the key papers presented at the American Chemical Society (ACS) national meeting symposium "Green (or Greener) Industrial Applications of Ionic Liquids," held in San Diego, California, April 1-5, 2001. This symposium was the first open international meeting on the fundamentals and applications of ionic liquids (although a closed NATO-ARW meeting was held in Crete in April 2000). The sessions at the ACS symposium were the best attended at the meeting, a clear marker of the vast current interest in the industrial applications of ionic liquids. Our peak attendance was more than 275, and average attendance for the first four days was more than 180. The meeting was split into 10 sessions (Ionic Liquids in Context, Separations and Engineering, Green Synthesis, Nuclear and Electrochemistry, Ionic Liquid Systems, Properties of Ionic Liquids, Catalysis I, Catalysis II, Structure and Photochemistry, and High-Temperature and Other Systems), running from Sunday morning to Thursday afternoon; more than 60 oral presentations were delivered. Page restrictions have prevented the publication of all the presentations, but we have tried to select a representative subset of the papers. It is amazing that such a variety of topics, of such novelty and interest, could be presented when, a few years earlier, the Gordon Research Conference on molten salts died from lack of interest, and ionic liquids were considered an academic curiosity, of no practical use.

Goosebumps and Bill Nye the Science Guy fans, meet Franny! Franny K. Stein, Mad Scientist, has always had her eye on world domination, and she has to start somewhere...like her class elections! If people vote for her, they'll be giving her all the control she wants. But Franny's platform doesn't have the same appeal as her competitors who are offering new playground equipment, so she creates The Frandidate. Made of DNA samples from a dog, a chameleon and a parrot, along with a scrap of carpet (so she'll know where people stand), Franny's special suit helps her say and do exactly what people want! But when The Frandidate starts making promises she knows she can't keep, Franny realizes she might have gone too far...

A Syntopicon 2: An Index to The Great Ideas (Man - World) Mortimer J. Adler (editor); William Gorman (editor) William Benton (Encyclopædia Britannica); Encyclopaedia Britannica; Encyclop©Œdia Britannica, Great Books of the Western World 3 / Synopticon, 2, 1, 1952
A Syntopicon: An Index to The Great Ideas (1952; second edition, 1990) is a two-volume index, published as volumes 2 and 3 of Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.’s collection Great Books of the Western World. Compiled by Mortimer J. Adler, an American philosopher, under the guidance of Robert Hutchins, president of the University of Chicago, the volumes were billed as a collection and guide to the most important ideas, clustered under 102 "Great Ideas", of the Western canon. The term “syntopicon” as well as "Great Ideas" were coined specifically for this undertaking, the former a neolatin word meaning “a collection of topics.” The volumes catalogued what Adler and his team deemed to be the fundamental ideas contained in the works of the Great Books of the Western World, which stretched chronologically from Homer to Freud. The Syntopicon lists, under each idea, where every occurrence of the concept can be located in the collection's famous works. The Syntopicon was revised as part of the second edition of the collection.

The Prince (Italian: Il Principe [il ˈprintʃipe]; Latin: De Principatibus) is a 16th-century political treatise written by Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli as an instruction guide for new princes and royals. The general theme of The Prince is of accepting that the aims of princes – such as glory and survival – can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends. From Machiavelli's correspondence, a version appears to have been distributed in 1513, using a Latin title, De Principatibus (Of Principalities). However, the printed version was not published until 1532, five years after Machiavelli's death. This was carried out with the permission of the Medici pope Clement VII, but "long before then, in fact since the first appearance of The Prince in manuscript, controversy had swirled about his writings". Although The Prince was written as if it were a traditional work in the mirrors for princes style, it was generally agreed as being especially innovative. This is partly because it was written in the vernacular Italian rather than Latin, a practice that had become increasingly popular since the publication of Dante's Divine Comedy and other works of Renaissance literature.

VAN LOON'S GEOGRAPHY I Vanloon,H.W., Ptolemy. On the revolutions of the heavenly spheres, Nicolaus Copernicus. Epitome of Copernican astronomy:IV-V ,, Mortimer J. Adler, editor in chief, Clifton Fadiman, Philip W. Goetz, associate editors, Augustine, of Hippo Saint 中国编译出版社, 2010, 2010
Ptolemy's Almagest is one of the most influential scientific works in history. A masterpiece of technical exposition, it was the basic textbook of astronomy for more than a thousand years, and still is the main source for our knowledge of ancient astronomy. This translation, based on the standard Greek text of Heiberg, makes the work accessible to English readers in an intelligible and reliable form. It contains numerous corrections derived from medieval Arabic translations and extensive footnotes that take account of the great progress in understanding the work made in this century, due to the discovery of Babylonian records and other researches. It is designed to stand by itself as an interpretation of the original, but it will also be useful as an aid to reading the Greek text. The Annals was Tacitus' final work and provides a key source for modern understanding of the history of the Roman Empire from the beginning of the reign of Tiberius in AD 14 to the end of the reign of Nero, in AD 68. Tacitus wrote the Annals in at least 16 books, but books 7-10 and parts of books 5, 6, 11 and 16 are missing. The period covered by the Histories (written before the Annals) starts at the beginning of the year AD 69, i.e. six months after the death of Nero and continues to the death of Domitian in 96. It is not known when Tacitus began writing the Annals, but he was well into writing it by AD 116. Modern scholars believe that as a senator, Tacitus had access to Acta Senatus, the Roman senate's records, thus providing a solid basis for his work Confessions / Translated By R. S. Pine-coffin -- City Of God / Translated By Marcus Dods -- On Christian Doctrine / Translated By J. F. Shaw. Saint Augustine. Translated From Latin By R.s. Pine-coffin, Marcus Dods, J.f.
