nexusstc/True Myth: C.S. Lewis and Joseph Campbell on the Veracity of Christianity/275bb1e0ca4e42c89b2210921c1939c4.epub
True Myth : C.S. Lewis and Joseph Campbell on the Veracity of Christianity James W. Menzies The Lutterworth Press, 1, 2015
True Myth examines the meaning and significance of myth as understood by C.S. Lewis and Joseph Campbell and its place in the Christian faith in a technological society. C.S. Lewis defined Christianity, and being truly human, as a relationship between the personal Creator and his creation mediated through faith in his son, Jesus. The influential writer and mythologist Joseph Campbell had a different perspective, understanding Christianity as composed of mythical themes similar to those in other religious and secular myths. While accepting certain portions of the biblical record as historical, Campbell taught the theological and miraculous aspects as symbolic - as stories in which the reader discovers what it means to be human today. In contrast, Lewis presented the theological and the miraculous in a literal way. Although Lewis understood how one could see symbolism and lessons for life in miraculous events, he believed they were more than symbolic and indeed took place in human history. In True Myth, James W. Menzies skilfully balances the two writers' differing approaches to guide the reader through a complex interaction of myth with philosophy, media, ethics, history, literature, art, music and religion in a contemporary world.

A muggy July weekend in Toronto. A house party with a disparate assortment of guests. A tired police inspector and his rookie partner. And murder. Reminiscent of the best Agatha Christie had to offer Humor, complications, and characters so real that you can just about touch them and smell their sweat. Midwest Book Review Get to know and love (or hate) a rich cast of characters Homicide inspector Paul Manziuk wants nothing more than a few days R and R to recharge his brain. Constable Jacqueline Ryan believes she owes her promotion to the Homicide Squad to being a black woman, and that shell do a better job of proving she belongs there if she can avoid working with the no-nonsense, intimidating Manziuk. Senior corporate lawyer George Brodie and his wife Ellen want their son to marry a nice girl and settle down. To that end, Ellen invited the auburn-haired daughter of a distant relative for the July long weekend. But her plans go sadly awry when George invites his junior partners and their wives, and their son brings along his roommatea ladies man. Jillian Martin, the spoiled young wife of one of Georges partners, looks forward to being the center of attention at the house party. But first her husband insists they take along her disgusting older sister; then an old flame seems to be more interested by a boring religious do-gooder and an experienced older man makes fun of her. The last straw is when the jealous wife of another partner dares to challenge her. After Jillian's lifeless body is found in one of the gardens on the estate, chaos ensues. Manziuk and Ryan are given the case, and it isnt long before Manziuk feels hes been thrust into an Agatha Christie novel where everyone has a motive and its necessary to sort through numerous baffling clues and conflicting alibis to find the truth. However, hes no Hercule Poirot, and Ryan is definitely not Miss Marple. Woo, the Monkey Who Inspired Emily Carr : A Biography Grant Hayter-Menzies Douglas and McIntyre (2013) Ltd., Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 1), Madeira Park, BC, 2019
""Although Emily Carr is now considered a Canadian legend, the most enduring image is that of her pushing a beat-up old pram into downtown Victoria, loaded with dogs, cats, birds-and a monkey. Woo, a Javanese macaque whom Carr adopted in 1923, has become inextricably linked with Carr in the popular imagination. But more than that, in her short lifetime Woo became equally connected to Carr's life and art. Born to a strictly religious family, Carr was never able to reconcile her wild and passionate nature with the stifling mores of the well-to-do Victorian society in which she was raised. Over the years, she increasingly turned to the company of animals to find the love and trust missing from her human relationships. Across the world in an Indonesian jungle lagoon, Woo (like Carr) was parted from her mother at a young age. The tiny ape with a "greeny-brown" pelt and penetrating golden eyes was then shipped across the world. When Carr spotted Woo in a pet store, she recognized a kindred spirit and took her home. Woo was many things to Carr-a surrogate daughter, a reflection of herself, a piece of the wild inside her downtown Victoria boarding house. Welcoming the mischievous Woo into her life, Carr also welcomed a freedom that allowed a full blooming of artistic expression and gave Canada and the world great art unlike any other before or since. However, despite Carr's clear love for Woo, her chaotic life did not always allow Carr to properly care for her. Tragically, after Carr was hospitalized due to heart failure, she arranged for Woo to be sent to the Stanley Park Zoo. Bereft of Carr, Woo died alone in her cage only a year later. Hayter-Menzies approaches his subject from a contemporary perspective on bringing wild animals into captivity while remaining empathetic to the unique relationship between artist and monkey."-- Provided by publisher

nexusstc/BC First Nations Studies/cbcc26432fe014cba7bf5415cfc5b722.pdf
B.C First Nations Studies Charles Menzies, Brent Peacock and Kenneth Campbell Pacific Educational Press, British Columbia Minist, B.C First Nations Studies 1, 2003
B.C. First Nations Studies documents the history and cultures of First Nations and Métis people in British Columbia from before the arrival of Europeans to the present. It examines the historical foundations of contemporary issues and illustrates how First Nations cultures have adapted to changing world events and environments. Aboriginal people’s contributions to British Columbia and Canada are highlighted, and important leaders and role models are profiled. The introduction to the book, titled “The Voice of the Land Is Our Language,” is written in a First Nations voice and provides you, the reader, with an opportunity to understand the values and beliefs that sustain contemporary First Nations cultures. By speaking from within the culture, the introduction expresses a message about the integrity of a world view that has much to offer the whole of society. The book is organized into four parts and an epilogue. Part One explores the nature of First Nations cultures before the arrival of Europeans, and in particular Aboriginal people’s relationship with the land. Part Two examines what occurred when the two groups met, how the forces of colonialism shaped British Columbia as it is today, and how First Nations have resisted those forces. In Part Three, you will come to understand how First Nations are working through governments and courts to redress the legacies of colonialism. Part Four demonstrates the creative spirit which is one of the foundations and continuing strengths of First Nations cultures. The epilogue by John Borrows offers an Aboriginal perspective on the challenges communities face as they regain their place as self-governing nations.

Lillian Carter : a compassionate life Carter, Jimmy; Carter, Lillian; Hayter-Menzies, Grant McFarland & Company, Incorporated Publishers, 1, 2014
Written with the cooperation of President Jimmy Carter and his family, this book provides an intimate glimpse inside the life of the woman who--as nurse, mother and social justice activist in segregated southwest Georgia--made a lifelong habit of breaking the rules defining a woman's place in and out of the home and the status of blacks in society. As the only white nurse in her rural community who cared for black families, as a 68-year-old Peace Corps Volunteer in 1960s India, as a fearless supporter of civil rights and as a First Mother unlike any other, Lillian Carter showed how individual courage, conviction and compassion can make a difference. Drawing on interviews with friends and colleagues, members of the Plains, Georgia, black community, Peace Corps Volunteers who trained with her, White House insiders and key players in the civil rights movement, as well as letters, documents and photographs never before made public, this book captures the essence of the woman the press dubbed "Rose Kennedy without the hair dye" and "First Mother of the world."
