The roles of cell wall chemical modification, polymer lumen-fill treatments, and a combination of these two treatments in reducing the degradative effects of ultraviolet light on wood revealed widely varying degrees of effectiveness. Under conditions simulating accelerated outdoor weathering (ultraviolet light irradiation alterna ting with water spray), butylene oxide-or butyl isocyanate-modified southern pine sapwood performed no better than untreated controls and surface degradation was severe. With ultraviolet light exposure only, surface degradation was much less for both modified wood and untreated wood. Southern pine with a dual treatment of chemical modification with butylene oxide or butyl isocyanate followed by lumen-fill treatment with methyl methacrylate, or southern pine impregnated with methyl methacrylate and polymerized in situ, resulted in modified woods that were resistant to accelerated weathering and to ultraviolet light alone. Physical, chemical, and microscopic changes occurring as a result of ultraviolet light irradi ation are described.

Drawing Lines in the Forest: Creating Wilderness Areas in the Pacific Northwest (Weyerhaeuser Environmental Books) Kevin R. Marsh; foreword by William Cronon University of Washington Press ; in association with the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Lightning Source (Tier 4), Seattle, 2007

Drawing boundaries around wilderness areas often serves a double purpose: protection of the land within the boundary and release of the land outside the boundary to resource extraction and other development. In Drawing Lines in the Forest, Kevin R. Marsh discusses the roles played by various groupsthe Forest Service, the timber industry, recreationists, and environmentalistsin arriving at these boundaries. He shows that pragmatic, rather than ideological, goals were often paramount, with all sides benefiting.

After World War II, representatives of both logging and recreation use sought to draw boundaries that would serve to guarantee access to specific areas of public lands. The logging industry wanted to secure a guaranteed supply of timber, as an era of stewardship of the nation's public forests gave way to an emphasis on rapid extraction of timber resources. This spawned a grassroots preservationist movement that ultimately challenged the managerial power of the Forest Service. The Wilderness Act of 1964 provided an opportunity for groups on all sides to participate openly and effectively in the political process of defining wilderness boundaries.

The often contentious debates over the creation of wilderness areas in the Cascade Mountains in Oregon and Washington represent the most significant stages in the national history of wilderness conservation since World War II: Three Sisters, North Cascades and Glacier Peak, Mount Jefferson, Alpine Lakes, French Pete, and the state-wide wilderness acts of 1984.

The Iran Nuclear Deal : Bombs, Bureaucrats, and Billionaires Dennis C Jett; Jett.; Chen Springer International Publishing : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Cham, Switzerland, 2018
This book examines attempts to influence the outcome of the negotiations between Iran and the United States over Iran’s nuclear capabilities. In particular, it focuses on struggles within the United States around public and congressional opinion with regard to the accord. Trying to prevent a successful outcome to the talks became a cottage industry in Washington, with the casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson being just one of those who were pouring millions of dollars into the effort. On the pro-diplomacy side, there were a wide range of religious, peace, and arms control groups with some financial support coming from the Ploughshares Fund trying to create the space for a negotiated agreement. The tactics of both sides of the debate are described and analyzed to show how a contentious foreign policy issue can become not just a decision for high-level government decision makers, but a wide-ranging fight that involves scores of nongovernmental organizations, the media, and thousands of activists. Erscheinungsdatum: 25.10.2017

Jett Landry: The Fierce Warrior: Vol 3 in the Jett Landry Saga Oak, Stephan UNKNOWN, 2021
Jett is all Texas: tough, smart, and she isn’t scared of anyone. An outlaw on the run in the secessionist Texas Republic, she’s the solution for the good guys. For the bad guys, she’s the problem. Most people think she’s dead, but some people know the truth. Those people are led by Melinda and Tanya, podcasters and leaders of a protest movement who claim that Jett is still alive, speak out against the oppression of the Texas Republic, and demand justice for the state sponsored murder of a young woman known as “Mikayla.” When a live video of Jett wreaking havoc while rescuing a trafficking survivor goes viral, everyone is on notice: Jett lives and she’s coming back. And this time she means business. Meanwhile, the charismatic Governor, Mike Krayton Sr., and their cronies have a plan to eliminate Jett and put the protest movement down once and for all. It’s freedom’s last stand in Port City, Texas. Who will survive? Will there be justice? Will there be freedom? Jett Landry: The Fierce Warrior is the exciting conclusion to the first Jett Landry Trilogy. A novel by Stephan Oak. Cover art by Micky Mitchell.

Ancient Ocean Crossings : Reconsidering the Case for Contacts with the Pre-Columbian Americas Stephen C. Jett The University of Alabama Press, University of Alabama Press, Tuscaloosa, 2017
Paints a compelling picture of impressive pre-Columbian cultures and Old World civilizations that, contrary to many prevailing notions, were not isolated from one another In Ancient Ocean Crossings: Reconsidering the Case for Contacts with the Pre-Columbian Americas, Stephen Jett encourages readers to reevaluate the common belief that there was no significant interchange between the chiefdoms and civilizations of Eurasia and Africa and peoples who occupied the alleged terra incognita beyond the great oceans. More than a hundred centuries separate the time that Ice Age hunters are conventionally thought to have crossed a land bridge from Asia into North America and the arrival of Columbus in the Bahamas in 1492. Traditional belief has long held that earth's two hemispheres were essentially cut off from one another as a result of the post-Pleistocene meltwater-fed rising oceans that covered that bridge. The oceans, along with arctic climates and daunting terrestrial distances, formed impermeable barriers to interhemispheric communication. This viewpoint implies that the cultures of the Old World and those of the Americas developed independently. Drawing on abundant and concrete evidence to support his theory for significant pre-Columbian contacts, Jett suggests that many ancient peoples had both the seafaring capabilities and the motives to cross the oceans and, in fact, did so repeatedly and with great impact. His deep and broad work synthesizes information and ideas from archaeology, geography, linguistics, climatology, oceanography, ethnobotany, genetics, medicine, and the history of navigation and seafaring, making an innovative and persuasive multidisciplinary case for a new understanding of human societies and their diffuse but interconnected development.
