lgli/Julius Caesar [Caesar, Julius] - The Civil War (2004, Penguin UK).epub
The Civil War Julius Caesar [Caesar, Julius] Penguin UK, 2004
A military leader of legendary genius, Caesar was also a great writer, recording the events of his life with incomparable immediacy and power. The Civil War is a tense and gripping depiction of his struggle with Pompey over the leadership of Republican Rome - a conflict that spanned the entire Roman world, from Gaul and Spain to Asia and Africa. Where Caesar's own account leaves off in 48 BC, his lieutenants take up the history, describing the vital battles of Munda, Spain and Thapsus, and the installation of Cleopatra, later Caesar's mistress, as Queen of Egypt. Together these narratives paint a full picture of the events that brought Caesar supreme power - and paved the way for his assassination only months later.

THE CIVIL WAR (Complete Edition) (Oxford World’s Classics) Julius Caesar; J. M. Carter Oxford University Press España, S.A., Annotated, 2008
The Civil War is Caesar's masterly account of the celebrated war between himself and his great rival Pompey, from the crossing of the Rubicon in January 49 B.C. to Pompey's death and the start of the Alexandrian War in the autumn of the following year. His unfinished account of the continuing struggle with Pompey's heirs and followers is completed by the three anonymous accounts of the Alexandrian, African, and Spanish Wars, which bring the story down to within a year of Caesar's assassination in March 44 B.C. This generously annotated edition places the war in context and enables the reader to grasp it both in detail and as a whole. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Gallic War (Dover Thrift Editions) Gaius Julius Caesar Mineola, N.Y.: Dover Publications, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2012
The only chronicle by an ancient general of his own campaigns, this historical treasure is also a work of profound literary merit. Julius Caesar's fascinating account of his conquests offers a trove of priceless details about the cultures of Gaul, Germany, and Britain during the First century B.C.—and of the great man himself.Despite his extensive background in politics, Caesar expresses himself without hiding behind rhetoric, in an uncluttered, factual style. Vigorous, direct, and eloquent, his accounts resemble memoirs or historical outlines rather than a formal histories. His notes on cultural matters, although secondary to his attention to military affairs, offer the era's most complete picture of the settings and personalities among Celtic and German tribes. This excellent translation offers several helpful features.

The War for Gaul : A New Translation Julius Caesar & James J. O'Donnell Princeton University Press, Princeton University Press, Princeton, 2019
A new translation that captures the gripping power of one of the greatest war stories ever told—Julius Caesar’s pitiless account of his brutal campaign to conquer Gaul Imagine a book about an unnecessary war written by the ruthless general of an occupying army—a vivid and dramatic propaganda piece that forces the reader to identify with the conquerors and that is designed, like the war itself, to fuel the limitless political ambitions of the author. Could such a campaign autobiography ever be a great work of literature—perhaps even one of the greatest? It would be easy to think not, but such a book exists—and it helped transform Julius Caesar from a politician on the make into the Caesar of legend. This remarkable new translation of Caesar’s famous but underappreciated War for Gaul captures, like never before in English, the gripping and powerfully concise style of the future emperor’s dispatches from the front lines in what are today France, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. While letting Caesar tell his battle stories in his own way, distinguished classicist James O’Donnell also fills in the rest of the story in a substantial introduction and notes that together explain why Gaul is the “best bad man’s book ever written”—a great book in which a genuinely bad person offers a bald-faced, amoral description of just how bad he has been.Complete with a chronology, a map of Gaul, suggestions for further reading, and an index, this feature-rich edition captures the forceful austerity of a troubling yet magnificent classic—a book that, as O’Donnell says, “gets war exactly right and morals exactly wrong.”Review"This modern commentary on the Commentaries also 'lets you see Caesar the man and politician, not just the general he wanted you to see.'" ---Robert S. Davis, *New York Journal of Books* "A vigorous, modern, and uncluttered translation." ---Lawrence Freedman, *Foreign Affairs* "Certainly one for the school library shelves or young friends and relatives (classicists or not) who may well be less acquainted with Caesar." ---Adrian Spooner, *Classics for All Reviews*Review"This book invites us to rethink Caesar’s war commentaries not as epic history or grand adventure, but as highly political presentations. The introduction and notes provide rich context, penetrating insight, and grim wit, making clear that Caesar aims not merely to inform but to seduce. As James O’Donnell so strikingly puts it, ‘as you put down this volume, you have become Caesar.' " ―Steven Saylor, author of *The Throne of Caesar* “To publicize his campaigns in Gaul, Julius Caesar invented a new genre―and a direct, swift, but careful narrative style, like a tight skin around the events he recounts. James O'Donnell admirably renders this style in English, ventriloquizing Caesar's mysterious genius."― Sarah Ruden, translator of Augustine's *Confessions* “No one has come close to capturing Caesar’s verbal celerity in anything like the way James O’Donnell has. His disciplined application of a terse, bracing style is both readable and simulates something of the experience of the original audience. This makes for a gripping read and brings out what made Caesar famous as an author in his own time. A genuinely distinctive and valuable translation.” ―Andrew M. Riggsby, author of *Caesar in Gaul and Rome* "Caesar waged prose as he waged war―in ways swift, economical, and ruthless. One sign of the businesslike slaughter of this book is its author's famous use of the third person about himself. He made the mere word 'Caesar' a weapon to be wielded against his foes. O'Donnell enhances this fine translation by prefacing each yearly report from Gaul with a description of what was going on in Rome at the same time, allowing us to see how profoundly the two streams of action affected each other." ―Garry Wills, author of Rome and Rhetoric: Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar " “ The War for Gaul is Caesar’s report of his conquest of Gaul, an amoral war and a vastly destructive prelude to political revolution at Rome. O’Donnell does full justice to Caesar’s Latin, giving us an account as terse and understated as the original. The introductions preceding each Commentary give the modern reader a sense of the context that the ancient reader brought to the story and show us Caesar in the process of becoming Caesar.” ―Cynthia Damon, editor and translator of Caesar’s *Civil War* “Most translations of Caesar give the impression that his style is weighty, ponderous, and, frankly, boring, but nothing could be further from the truth. James O’Donnell’s version of The War for Gaul is much more successful than others in rendering Caesar’s taut, forceful prose in English. In replicating the economy and sweep of Caesar’s narrative, O’Donnell’s version wins hands down.” ―James M. May, St. Olaf College “James O’Donnell’s version of The War for Gaul is as gripping and readable as Caesar's itself. Brisk, terse, and potent, the translation captures the meaning of the original. It is a marvelous achievement. I sat, I read, I loved.” ―Barry Strauss, author of *The Death of Caesar*ISBN : 9780691174921

Julius Caesar: The Civil War Book III. Edited with an Introduction, Translation and Commentary J. M. Carter; Julius Caesar Aris & Phillips Ltd, Warminster, England, Aris & Phillips Classical Texts, 1993
In the third and final book which he wrote about his campaigns in the Civil War, Julius Caesar tells the story of his fight with Pompey in 48 B.C. which ended in the rout of the latter at Pharsalus, perhaps Caesar's most notable military victory. The book ends with Caesar pursuing Pompey to Egypt. Here began Caesar's celebrated affair with Cleopatra. At this point the book, and the whole work, ends abruptly. J. M. Carter's edition and commentary on Caesar's The Civil War Books I-III is the first complete commentary in English for a hundred years and is considerably more detailed than currently available annotated texts and translations in other languages. The main emphasis of the commentary is historical, but Caesar's literary technique is also scrutinised. The Latin text is newly constituted with a brief apparatus criticus. Latin text with facing-page English translation, introduction and commentary.

Julius Caesar : the pursuit of power Ernle Dusgate Selby Bradford E-Reads, UK Edition, 1982
A military genius worshiped for his courage; a fierce politician admired for his shrewdness and mercy; a brilliant writer and speaker. It's no wonder that in his lifetime Julius Caesar held the positions of military tribune, praetor, consul, pro-consul and dictator. But even his astounding ambition could not make him emperor, though it did achieve the conquest of Cleopatra, ruler of the most fabulous kingdom in all of known civilization. In this biography of Caesar, acclaimed historian Ernle Bradford steers away from the clichÈs and legends and cuts right to the heart of who Caesar really was - a man who based his entire existence on the pursuit of power.

The Last Assassin - The Hunt for the Killers of Julius Caesar Peter Stothard Orion
‘A political thriller, and a human story that astonishes’ Hilary MantelMany men killed Julius Caesar. Only one man was determined to kill the killers. From the spring of 44 BC through one of the most dramatic and influential periods in history, Caesar’s adopted son, Octavian, the future Emperor Augustus, exacted vengeance on the assassins of the Ides of March, not only on Brutus and Cassius, immortalised by Shakespeare, but all the others too, each with his own individual story. The last assassin left alive was one of the lesser-known, Cassius Parmensis, a poet and sailor who chose every side in the dying republic’s civil wars except the winning one, a playwright whose work was said to have been stolen and published by the man sent to kill him. Parmensis was in the back row of the plotters, many of them Caesar’s friends, who killed for reasons of the highest political philosophy and lowest personal pique. For fourteen years he was the most successful at evading his hunters but has been barely a historical foot note - until now.THE LAST ASSASSIN dazzlingly charts an epic turn of history through the eyes of an unheralded man. It is a history of a hunt that an emperor wanted to hide, of torture and terror, politics and poetry, of ideas and their consequences, a gripping story of fear, revenge and survival.

Julius Caesar: The Pursuit of Power Bradford, Ernle Morrow, 1984
When Julius Caesar was murdered in 44 B.C., he was one of the most powerful men in the world. His overwhelming ambition had made him a military tribune, praetor, consul, dictator, and in the eyes of many, a god. Only one title eluded him: king. This revealing portrait of Caesar avoids the myths and cliches of popular legend. The real Caesar was a man whose primary purpose was the pursuit of power. Characteristically, he had contempt for those who helped him reach his goal.

Julius Caesar : the pursuit of power Bradford, Ernle Dusgate Selby;Caesar, Julius Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., New York, 2014, ©1984
The epic life story of the Roman statesman, military commander, and dictator, from the bestselling author of Thermopylae.   Born to Roman aristocracy in 100 BC, Julius Caesar became one of the most powerful men in history. He was a military genius, a fierce politician, and a brilliant writer and orator. When he formed an alliance with Pompey and Crassus, the triumvirate of officials took control of the Roman Republic. But Caesar’s quest for power was only beginning.   As proconsul, he went to war against the Gallic tribes of the north, extending Roman territory into Gaul, Belgium, Germany, and Britain. When the Gallic Wars ended, the Roman senate called on Caesar to return to private life. But rather than relinquish his title, Caesar led his legion into a civil war that would spell the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire.   In this thrilling and thoroughly researched biography, Ernle Bradford cuts through the legends in order to present a truthful and nuanced portrait of a man whose pursuit of power knew no bounds.

Well-known as a brilliant general and politician, Julius Caesar also played a fundamental role in the formation of the Latin literary language and remains a central figure in the history of Latin literature. With twenty-three chapters written by renowned scholars, this Companion provides an accessible introduction to Caesar as an intellectual along with a scholarly assessment of his multiple literary accomplishments and new insights into their literary value. The Commentarii and Caesar's lost works are presented in their historical and literary context. The various chapters explore their main features, the connection between literature, state religion and politics, Caesar's debt to previous Greek and Latin authors, and his legacy within and outside of Latin literature. The innovative volume will be of great value to all students and scholars of Latin literature and to those seeking a more rounded portrait of the achievements of Julius Caesar.
