Frances Burney : the world of 'female difficulties' Katharine M. Rogers Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc., November 5, 1991
Katharine Rogers argues that of all the achieving women of the 18th century whose work has been recovered from obscurity, Frances Burney was the most inhibited by traditional concepts of femininity. Yet her life, her journals, and her novels sometimes point to a strength and creative vitality that existed side by side with timidity and stultifying conventionality. Professor Rogers confronts more traditional views of Burney, which emphasize her conservatism, while engaging with recent feminist criticism, which emphasizes Burney's courage and shows her novels to be serious representations of the difficulties of women's lives. Introduction; or, The History of a Young Lady's Entrance into the World; A More Probing Look Into That World; Family Relationships Complicating Entrance into the World; Protest Against the World's Law; The A Political Analysis of the World; Tensions Between Form and Content; Notes; Works Cited.

Pork: A Global History (The Edible Series) Katharine M. Rogers Reaktion Books, Limited, The Edible Series, 2014
Pork is the most widely eaten meat in the world. It formed the high point of Roman feasts and was the mainstay of the traditional working-class diet in Europe and North America for centuries. Today it remains popular in Western countries, while for the Chinese, 'meat' means pork unless otherwise specified. Almost every part of a pig is edible, and pork is the most versatile of meats - ranging from the rich, delicate succulence of a roast loin to the dry, salty assertiveness of ham and bacon. "Pork: A Global History" tells how pork, the favourite meat of rich Romans, was disparaged in later centuries as a useful meat for the middle and lower classes. European settlers brought pork to the Americas and barrel pork, kept submerged in a barrel of brine, became a staple of working-class people in the USA. Pork has always been prized by all classes in China. Beautifully illustrated and filled with recipes from around the world, Pork will be a necessary addition to the bookshelf of any lover of bacon, sausage or pork chops.

Two friends and other nineteenth-century lesbian stories by American women writers Susan Koppelman; Cairns Collection of American Women Writers New York: Meridian, Ayn Rand library, New York, 1993
This extraordinary edition includes seven full-length plays from the era, including an unproduced play by Frances Burney, unavailable for centuries. Women playwrights of the Restoration and eighteenth century were bawdy and proper, apologetic and defiant, often derided and occasionally praised. The seven women represented in this groundbreaking anthologythe only collection of Restoration and eighteenth-century plays devoted exclusively to womenhad but one thing in the desire to ignore convention and write for the stage. In 1660, when theatres in England reopened after years of Puritan repression, women trod the boards as actors for the very first time. By the end of the century they had stormed and breached another bastion of the male domain and become dramatists as well. Most available collections of plays from the period exclude them; traditional criticism overlooks or diminishes them. But their works, as seen here, hold their own against the most popular productions for the theater from 1678 to 1787, and do it with a distinctively female spirit. Each of these womenAphra Behn, Frances Burney, Susanna Centlivre, Hannah Cowley, Elizabeth Inchbald, Mary Griffith Pix, and Mercy Otis Warrenlegitimized the profession of playwright for their sex. They were the genre's prolific women pioneers whose body of work has remained unmatched until the twentieth century.

L. Frank Baum, the royal historian of Oz : a biography Rogers, Katharine M. St. Martin's Press, 1st ed., New York, New York State, July 7, 2006
Since it was first introduced over a hundred years ago in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , L. Frank Baum's world of Oz has become one of the most enduring and beloved creations in children's literature. It has influenced numerous prominent writers and intellectuals, and become a lasting part of the culture itself. L. Frank Baum was born in 1856 in upstate New York, the seventh child of a very successful barrel-maker and later oil producer. However, Baum's own career path was a rocky one. Beginning as an actor, Baum tried working as a traveling salesman, the editor of a small town newspaper and the publisher of a trade journal on retailing, failing to distinguish himself in any occupation. His careers either failed to provide a sufficient living for his beloved wife Maud and their children or were so exhausting as to be debilitating. In the 1890's, L. Frank Baum took the advice of his mother-in-law, suffragist leader Matilda Gage, and turned his attention to trying to sell the stories he'd been telling to his sons and their friends. After a few children's books published with varying success, he published The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900 and it quickly became a bestseller and has remained so ever since. In this first full-length adult biography of Baum, Rogers discusses some of the aspects that made his work unique and has likely contributed to Oz's long-lasting appeal, including Baum's early support of feminism and how it was reflected in his characters, his interest in Theosophy and how it took form in his books, and the celebration in his stories of traditional American values. Cat Rogers, Katharine M. Reaktion Books, Limited, New] edition, London, 2019
Cat traces the relationship between humans and the cat from its original domestication in ancient Egypt circa 2000 BC, through centuries as a utilitarian rodent catcher, its gradual acceptance as a charming and amiable pet, and on to its present status as a companion on a par with the dogand the subject of infinite online videos and memes. Long before people placed such value on cats, however, we recognized something special about them. Their graceful, fluid movements, and their self-detachment even as they live in our homes, seems to indicate strange, even supernatural powers. Indeed, our peculiar fascination with the cat seems rooted in the diversity of images it projects- at once sweet and ferocious, affectionate and independent, elegant and earthy, cozily domestic and eerie. Offering substantial and accurate information about the history of cats and their presentation in literature and art, this highly illustrated book will give cat lovers of all stripes and spots something to purr over

The cat and the human imagination : feline images from Bast to Garfield Rogers, Katharine M. University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1997
The Cat and the Human Imagination is a fascinating investigation of the changing cultural attitudes toward cats and the myriad ways they have been depicted in literature and art over time. Feline images have permeated civilization since the ancient Egyptians, and during this time the status of the cat has changed dramatically. The book examines the changing images -- fertility goddess, agent of Satan, aristocrat, spirit of the home, bloodthirsty killer -- and relates them to the contexts in which they arose. It also analyzes how human attitudes toward cats seem to have evolved in parallel with attitudes toward other animals, toward authority, and toward gender.
