Ideas in unexpected places : reimagining Black intellectual history Leslie M. Alexander (editor), Brandon R. Byrd (editor), Russell Rickford (editor) Northwestern University Press, Evanston, Illinois, 2022
This transformative collection advances new approaches to Black intellectual history by foregrounding the experiences and ideas of people who lacked access to more privileged mechanisms of public discourse and power. While the anthology highlights renowned intellectuals such as W. E. B. Du Bois, it also spotlights thinkers such as enslaved people in the antebellum United States, US Black expatriates in Guyana, and Black internationals in Liberia. The knowledge production of these men, women, and children has typically been situated outside the disciplinary and conceptual boundaries of intellectual history. The volume centers on the themes of slavery and sexuality; abolitionism; Black internationalism; Black protest, politics, and power; and the intersections of the digital humanities and Black intellectual history. The essays draw from diverse methodologies and fields to examine the ideas and actions of Black thinkers from the eighteenth century to the present, offering fresh insights while creating space for even more creative approaches within the field. Timely and incisive, Ideas in Unexpected Places encourages scholars to ask new questions through innovative interpretive lenses—and invites students, scholars, and other practitioners to push the boundaries of Black intellectual history even further.

Alexander's study reveals the untold story of how free and enslaved Black people in the United States defended the young Caribbean nation from forces intent on maintaining slavery and white supremacy. Concentrating on Haiti's place in the history of Black internationalism, Alexander illuminates the ways Haitian independence influenced Black thought and action in the United States. African or American? : Black identity and political activism in New York City, 1784-1861 Alexander, Leslie M. Urbana: University of Illinois Press, Urbana, Illinois, 2008
<p>During the early national and antebellum eras, black leaders in New York City confronted the tenuous nature of Northern emancipation. Despite the hope of freedom, black New Yorkers faced a series of sociopolitical issues including the persistence of Southern slavery, the threat of forced removal, racial violence, and the denial of American citizenship. Even efforts to create community space within the urban landscape, such as the African Burial Ground and Seneca Village, were eventually demolished to make way for the city's rapid development. In this illuminating history, Leslie M. Alexander chronicles the growth and development of black activism in New York from the formation of the first black organization, the African Society, in 1784 to the eve of the Civil War in 1861. In this critical period, black activists sought to formulate an effective response to their unequal freedom. Examining black newspapers, speeches, and organizational records, this study documents the creation of mutual relief, religious, and political associations, which black men and women infused with African cultural traditions and values.</p><p>As Alexander reveals, conflicts over early black political strategy foreshadowed critical ideological struggles that would bedevil the black leadership for generations to come. Initially, black leaders advocated racial uplift through a sense of communalism and connection to their African heritage. Yet by the antebellum era, black activists struggled to reconcile their African identity with a growing desire to gain American citizenship. Ultimately, this battle resulted in competing agendas; while some leaders argued that the black community should dedicate themselves to moral improvement and American citizenship, others began to consider emigrating to Africa or Haiti. In the end, the black leadership resolved to assert an American identity and to expand their mission for full equality and citizenship in the United States. This decision marked a crucial turning point in black political strategy, for it signaled a new phase in the quest for racial advancement and fostered the creation of a nascent Black Nationalism.&nbsp;</p>

The Real Worlds of Canadian Politics: Cases in Process and Policy, fourth edition Robert M. Campbell, Leslie A. Pal, Michael Howlett, Robert Malcolm Campbell, Leslie Alexander Pal University of Toronto Press, Higher Education Division, 4th ed., Peterborough, Ont, Orchard Park, N.Y, Ontario, 2004
" Fifteen years ago the first edition of The Real Worlds of Canadian Politics was published to wide acclaim in university classrooms across the country. Its case study approach to Canadian politics and public policy was a unique contribution, and its enormous popularity resulted in two more editions in the following five years. In all three editions, interesting and compelling contemporary cases presented policy issues in a deliberately dramatic narrative style, emphasizing the passions, personalities, and unpredictability of Canadian politics. Real Worlds was a widely read companion volume to more traditional textbooks, illustrating the ""real worlds"" of Canadian politics while offering students opportunities for discussion and debate. This new edition of The Real Worlds of Canadian Politics renews this tradition and the case study approach established by the earlier editions. It zeroes in on five key areas of policy activity at the federal level during the late stages of the Chrtien government and thebeginning of the Paul Martin era. The volume considers the political and policy implications of deregulation in two vital industries airlines and banking whose claims that ""bigger is better"" in the globalized environment defied the general political desire for increased competition. And the hard politics of trade that have dogged governments since the Free Trade Agreement was signed is covered in a case study of the controversial Canada-US softwood lumber dispute. Highly charged and emotional issues that defy easy or traditional solutions are also addressed, such as those affecting First Nations and women. Case studies examine the real worlds of First Nations land claims as illustrated in one of the most dramatic accomplishments to date the Nisga'a settlement and the explosive issue of gun control after the Montreal massacre. The fourth edition of The Real Worlds of Canadian Politics is a collaborative enterprise, combining an editorial team and a superb research group comprising Karen Lochead, Andrea Migone, and Russell Williamsof Simon Fraser University, and Samuel Bottomleyof Carleton University. Comments on previous ""... an outstanding success highly readable well-researched a real benefit to students of Canadian government and politics."" - Public Administration in Canada ""... an absolutely first-class addition to the literature and an incomparable teaching aid."" - John Meisel, Queen's University ""... makes a useful and distinctive contribution to the textbook literature ... a model of economy and coherence in the way it presents its material, and the writing style is clear and effective."" - Canadian Journal of Political Science Robert Campbell is Dean of Arts at Wilfrid Laurier University. Michael Howlett is Burnaby Mountain Professor of Political Science at Simon Fraser University. Leslie Pal is Director of the School of Public Administration at Carleton University. "

America has gone Hamilton crazy. Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony-winning musical has spawned sold-out performances, a triple platinum cast album, and a score so catchy that it is being used to teach U.S. history in classrooms across the country. But just how historically accurate is Hamilton ? And how is the show itself making history? Historians on Hamilton brings together a collection of top scholars to explain the Hamilton phenomenon and explore what it might mean for our understanding of America's history. The contributors examine what the musical got right, what it got wrong, and why it matters. Does Hamilton 's hip-hop take on the Founding Fathers misrepresent our nation's past, or does it offer a bold positive vision for our nation's future? Can a musical so unabashedly contemporary and deliberately anachronistic still communicate historical truths about American culture and politics? And is Hamilton as revolutionary as its creators and many commentators claim? Perfect for students, teachers, theatre fans, hip-hop heads, and history buffs alike, these short and lively essays examine why Hamilton became an Obama-era sensation and consider its continued relevance in the age of Trump. Whether you are a fan or a skeptic, you will come away from this collection with a new appreciation for the meaning and importance of the Hamilton phenomenon.

There are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, represented on the world stage by 57 states, as well as a host of international organizations and associations. This book critically examines the engagement of these states in systems of global governance and with a variety of policy regimes, including climate change, energy, migration, humanitarian aid, international financial institutions, research and education. Chapters explore the dynamics of this engagement, the contributions to global order, the interests pursued and some of the contradictions and tensions within the Islamic world, and between that world and the ‘West’. An in-depth perspective is provided about the traditional and new forms of multilateralism and the policy spaces formed which provide new opportunities for the Muslim and non-Muslim world alike. The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane (The Works of Tobias Smollett Ser.) by Alain René Le Sage; translated by Tobias Smollett; edited by O M Brack, Jr. and Leslie A. Chilton Georgia University Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Athens, GA, 2011
<p>Tobias Smollett, in the preface to his first novel, The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748), acknowledges the influence of Alain René Le Sage's L'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane (1715–35 in four volumes) on his work. By far the most successful of "useful and entertaining" romances, Smollett writes, Gil Blas describes "the knavery and foibles of life, with infinite humour and sagacity." "The following sheets," he adds significantly, "I have modeled on his plan."<br></p><p>Smollett's translation of Gil Blas appeared nine months after the publication of Roderick Random. This chronicle of a merry, philosophical young man whose adventures lead him into all levels of society from the highest to the lowest, presents special problems for a translator. Smollett, without always adhering to the literal expression of the novel's language, is true to its style, spirit, and ideas. After two and a half centuries, his remains the finest translation of this humorous, satiric, and classic French novel.<br></p><p>In his early years in London, Smollett struggled to find a way to distinguish himself through his medical practice, medical writings, poetry, and plays. None of these attempts, however, allowed him to demonstrate the full range of his personality and talents. Only when he combined his own boundless imagination with the skills he had learned from translating Gil Blas was he able to create energetic narratives filled with vivid and original characters.<br></p>

Rural communities, often the first indicators of economic downturns, play an important role in planning for development and sustainability. Increasingly, these communities are compelled to reimagine the paths that lead not only to economic success, but also to the cultural, social, environmental, and institutional pillars of sustainability. As the contributors to this volume demonstrate, there are many examples of such innovation and creativity, and many communities that seek out new ways to build the collaboration, capacity, and autonomy necessary to survive and flourish. "Milk is one of the world's most important agricultural food products. In meeting rising demand, more intensive dairying systems face a range of challenges such as maintaining high standards of safety whilst optimising nutritional and sensory quality. At the same time farms need to become more sustainable as well as meet higher standards of animal health and welfare. Smallholder systems in developing countries face problems such as low productivity and vulnerability to disease which also impact on safety, quality, sustainability and animal welfare. Drawing on an international range of expertise, this book reviews research addressing these challenges. It begins by discussing the composition of milk including proteins and bioactive components, the wide range of ingredients produced from milk, as well as aspects sensory quality. It also reviews current understanding of genetic factors affecting protein and other aspects of milk composition, other desirable traits such as fertility and advances in breeding to achieve improvements in quality and productivity in dairy farming. Achieving sustainable production of milk Volume 1: Milk composition, genetics and breeding will be a standard reference for animal and dairy scientists in universities, government and other research centres and companies involved in milk production. It is accompanied by two further volumes which review safety, quality and sustainability issues as well as dairy herd management and welfare."-- Provided by publisher

Policy-Making in a Transformative State : The Case of Qatar M. Evren Tok, Lolwah R. M. Alkhater, Leslie A. Pal (eds.) Palgrave Macmillan UK :Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2016, London, 2016
This book explores, in a series of detailed case studies, how public policy is actually made in Qatar. While Qatar is a Gulf monarchy, its governance is complex. Other analysts have tried to come to grips with this complexity using qualified descriptions of the system such as 'late rentier, ' 'pluralized autocracy, ' 'tribal democracy, ' or 'soft authoritarian.' The authors of the volume use the lens of a transformative state. Qatar is deliberately engaged in a rapid process of radical economic and societal transformation. That process has its contradictions and tensions, particularly with regards to achieving a balance between Islam, social traditions, and modernity. This book explores how it also has a specific policy dynamic of generating ideas and institutions, developing policy and program designs, implementation and coordination

Byzantine Orthodoxies: Papers from the Thirty-sixth Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies, University of Durham, 23–25 March 2002 (Publications of the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies) editors: Andrew Louth, Augustine Casiday Ashgate Publishing, Limited, Publications for the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies ;, 12, Publications (Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies (Great Britain)) ;, 12., Aldershot, Hampshire, Great Britain, Burlington, Vt, England, 2006
The Byzantine Empire - the Christianized Roman Empire - very soon defined itself in terms of correct theological belief, 'orthodoxy'. The terms of this belief were hammered out, for the most part, by bishops, but doctrinal decisions were made in councils called by the Emperors, many of whom involved themselves directly in the definition of 'orthodoxy'. Iconoclasm was an example of such imperial involvement, as was the final overthrow of iconoclasm. That controversy ensured that questions of Christian art were also seen by Byzantines as implicated in the question of orthodoxy. The papers gathered in this volume derive from those presented at the 36th Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies, Durham, March 2002. They discuss how orthodoxy was defined, and the different interests that it represented; how orthodoxy was expressed in art and the music of the liturgy; and how orthodoxy helped shape the Byzantine Empire's sense of its own identity, an identity defined against the 'other' - Jews, heretics and, especially from the turn of the first millennium, the Latin West. These considerations raise wider questions about the way in which societies and groups use world-views and issues of belief to express and articulate identity. At a time when, with the enlargement of the European Union, questions of identity within Europe are once again becoming pressing, there is much in these essays of topical relevance.

Wilson; Peter Bridgewater; Alison McCusker; Australian Government Publishing Service Australian Government Publishing Service, Volume 3, 1, 1986-87
Nine families of mainly wind-pollinated plants are described in this volume. They range in size from the herbaceous nettles (Urticaceae) to the She-Oaks (Casuarinaceae), and in distribution from the tropics to temperate rainforests and even arid zone woodlands. Some families such as Betulaceae and Ulmaceae (Elms) contain mainly introduced species, while others like Moraceae (Figs) are mainly native. The largest family is Casuarinaceae with 66 species, mostly in the genus Allocasuarina (She-Oaks). Moraceae has 47 species in 7 genera, including the Figs. Urticaeae, the nettle family, contains 21 species in 9 genera. The other six families have fewer than 10 species each, but include both tropical and temperate rainforest plants as well as naturalised species. This volume covers 9 families, 31 genera and 153 species.32 new taxa are described, as well as many new combinations and lectotypifications.

Charge and Energy Transfer Dynamics in Molecular Systems V. May, et. al. Wiley-VCH; John Wiley [distributor], 3rd ed. (rev.)-, 2011
In Recent Years The Generation Of Optical Harmonics In Molecular Systems Has Become An Area Of Increasing Interest For A Number Of Reasons. First, Many Organic Crystals And Polymeric Solids Prove Not Only To Have Usefully Large Optical Nonlinearities But Also To Be Surprisingly Robust And Thermally Stable. Consequently The Fabrication Of Organic Materials For Laser Frequency Conversion Has Become Very Much A Growth Area. At Interfaces And In Partially Ordered Systems, Harmonic Generation Is Now Of Considerable Scientific Interest Through The Detailed Structural Information It Affords. And In Molecular Gases And Liquids, Processes Of Optical Harmonic Conversion Present A Powerful Tool For The Study Of Both Static And Dynamic Effects Of Molecular Orientation. <br><br> Where The Detailed Nonlinear Optical Response Of Molecules Is Required, The Application Of Molecular Quantum Electrodynamics (qed) Brings Both Rigour And Conceptual Facility. Using This Approach The Authors Address Topics Of Direct Experimental Concern In A General Formulation Of Theory For Optical Harmonics, With A Particular Focus On Quantum Optical And Molecular Aspects. A Detailed Basis Is Provided For The Applications, Enabling The Characteristic Features Of Optical Nonlinearity To Be Examined In General Terms. A Great Many Of The Optical Phenomena Subsequently Addressed Find Wide Application In Nonlinear Optics And Chemical Physics. Specifically, The Book Deals With Coherent Harmonic Generation, Both Within And At Interfaces Between Different Media. It Addresses Elastic Second Harmonic (hyper-rayleigh) Light Scattering As Well As The Inelastic Case Normally Referred To As Hyper-raman Scattering. Full And Detailedtables And Results Are Provided For The Analysis Of Experimental Observations.
