History of Civilizations of Central Asia : The Crossroads of Civilization: A.D. 250 to 750 III
Litvinsky, B. A. (EDT)/ Guand-Da, Zhang (EDT)/ Samghabadi, R. Shabani (EDT)
UNESCO Publishing, III, 1996
In this third volume covering the flourishing period from the third to the eighth century A.D., scholars describe the powerful role played by the Sasanian state in Iran, the Gupta empire in India and the T'ang dynasty in China. Waves of nomadic migrations and the formation of steppe empires left their mark on political and social life. This multiethnic society had its roots in the great religious traditions of Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism, Christianity and Shamanism. The Islamization of a great part of the region brought fundamental changes to all aspects of life. Intensive trade along the Silk Route encouraged cultural and scientific exchanges, making this period one of impressive artistic and intellectual creativity.

History of Civilizations of Central Asia: The Crossroads of Civilization - Vol. 3 : A.D. 250 to 750
B. A. Litvinsky, Zhang Guand-Da, R. Shabani Samghabadi
UNESCO, May 1996
The History of the Scientific and Cultural Development of Mankind, published in 1968, was a major early response on the part of UNESCO to the task of enabling the peoples of the world to have a keener sense of their collective destiny by highlighting their individual contributions to the history of humanity. This universal history – itself now undergoing a fundamental revision – has been followed by a number of regional projects, including the General History of Africa and the planned volumes on Latin America, the Caribbean and on aspects of Islamic culture. The History of Civilizations of Central Asia is an integral part of this wider enterprise.

Part One: The Historical, Social and Economic SettingDuring the eight centuries covered in this volume, the new faith of Islam arose in Arabia and gradually spread eastwards and northwards, eventually affecting much of Central Asia, the southern fringes of Siberia and the eastern regions of China. These were also the centuries in which nomadic and military empires arose in the heart of Asia, impinging on the history of adjacent, well-established civilizations and cultures (China, India, Islamic Western Asia and Christian eastern and central Europe) to an unparalleled extent. Lamaist Buddhism established itself inthe Mongolian region and in Tibet and Islam among the Turkish people of Transoxania, southern Siberia and Xinjiang. It was in Eastern Europe, above all in Russia, that the Turco-Mongol Golden Horde was to have a major, enduring influence on the course of the region's history.

Burnout is common among doctors in the West, so one might assume that a medical career in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, would place far greater strain on the idealism that drives many doctors. But, as A Heart for the Work makes clear, Malawian medical students learn to confront poverty creatively, experiencing fatigue and frustration but also joy and commitment on their way to becoming physicians. The first ethnography of medical training in the global South, Claire L. Wendland's book is a moving and perceptive look at medicine in a world where the transnational movement of people and ideas creates both devastation and possibility.Wendland, a physician anthropologist, conducted extensive interviews and worked in wards, clinics, and operating theaters alongside the student doctors whose stories she relates. From the relative calm of Malawi's College of Medicine to the turbulence of training at hospitals with gravely ill patients and dramatically inadequate supplies, staff, and technology, Wendland's work reveals the way these young doctors engage the contradictions of their circumstances, shedding new light on debates about the effects of medical training, the impact of traditional healing, and the purposes of medicine.

RX for Chaos
Anvil, Christopher; Flint, Eric (EDT)
Baen Pub. Enterprises ; New York : Distributed by Simon & Schuster, Riverdale, NY, New York State, 3 February 2009
1. The trade paperback of edition of Anvil’s Interstellar Patrol (04/03), was a Locus best seller, with a strong sell through. 2. Like Keith Laumer, Anvil has a rare ability to combine fast-moving adventure with humor, deftly skewering the bureaucratic mind, whether human or alien. 3. New York Times best-selling author David Weber calls Anvil’s SF “a delightful pleasure,” and adds “I’m delighted that someone is making Christopher Anvil’s work available once again. Especially the Interstellar Patrol stories. . . . I’ve always loved Anvil’s, ah, peculiar sense of humor.” 4. Advertising in Locus, more 5. Christopher Anvil special backlist promotionScience and technology have made our lives easier, cured diseases, with achievements that an earlier age would have considered impossible. But once in a while, the law of unintended consequences breaks loose. Christopher Anvil considers the two faces of technological innovation: Sometimes the result is a literal life-saver; but at other times a breakthrough may not break quite the way it was supposed to. · A new wonder drug has the unexpected side effect of making people happy. Not a problem—everybody should want to be happy, right? But should people be happy all of the time? Suppose being happy required you never to disappoint anyone, no matter what they’re requesting. . . . · Then there was the energy source for every home that would free the country from its dependence on foreign oil—except that the prototype was rushed into production a bit too fast. · Back on the bright side, another device not only couldn’t possibly work by every known law of science, but didn’t have any obvious uses. Then alien invaders landed and suddenly the crackpot device was the world’s only hope. The upside and downside of marvelous new gadgets, as told by a master of science fiction adventure with a prescription for fun.

Advances In Density Functional Theory. Advances In Quantum Chemistry, Volume 33. [electronic resource]
Sabin, John R. edt, Brandas, Erkki J. edt, Zerner, Michael C. edt, Lowden, Per-Olov. edt, Seminario, Jorge M. edt
Elsevier Science & Technology, 1999
Series: Advances in Quantum Chemistry Vol.33, Quantum mechanics can describe the detailed structure and behavior of matter, from electrons, atoms, and molecules, to the whole universe. It is one of the fields of knowledge that yield extraordinary precessions, limited only by the computational resources available. Among these methods is density functional theory (DFT), which permits one to solve the equations of quantum mechanics more efficiently than with any related method. The present volume represents the most comprehensive summary currently available in density functional theory and its applications in chemistry from atomic physics to molecular dynamics. DFT is currently being used by more than fifty percent of computational chemists

How To Rule India: Papers Related To British Policies Towards Punjab
Ahmed Saleem (edt)
Punjab Adbi Markaz, 1978
From the Editor: Countless number of papers are believed to be lying buried under files of records of the British Establishment, which could, on one hand throw light on the political and socio-economic situation of the Punjab of that period, and provide tell-tale details, on the other hand, as to how cold-bloodedly the foreign rulers exploited that situation to their advantage. lt is essential that this record or the British Rule is upturned and thoroughly examined before this period of the Punjab history is discussed and properly appraised.

History of Civilizations of Central Asia : volumn V: Development in Contrast : from the Sixteeth to the Mid-Nineteenth Century
Ahmad Hasan Dani, Vadim Mikhaĭlovich Masson, Karl M. Baipakov, Chahryar Adle, Irfan Habib, Unesco
UNESCO Publishing, History of Civilizations of Central Asia, 2003
The period treated in this volume is highlighted by the slow retreat of nomadism and the progressive increase of sedentary polities owing to a fundamental change in military technology: Furthermore, this period certainly saw a growing contrast in the pace of economic and cultural progress between Central Asia and Europe. The internal growth of the European economies and the influx of silver from the New World gave Atlantic Europe an increasingly important position in world trade and caused a major shift in inland Asian trade. Thus, 1850 marks the end of the total sway of pre-modern culture as the extension of colonial dominance was accompanied by the influx of modern ideas.
