The Mathematics of Data (IAS/Park City Mathematics) (IAS/PARK CITY Mathematics, 25) Mahoney, Michael W.; Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, N.J.); Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics; Duchi, John; Gilbert, Anna C.; Park City Mathematics Institute [Providence, Rhode Island]: American Mathematical Society, American Mathematical Society, [Providence, Rhode Island], 2018
"Data science is a highly interdisciplinary field, incorporating ideas from applied mathematics, statistics, probability, and computer science, as well as many other areas. This book gives an introduction to the mathematical methods that form the foundations of machine learning and data science, presented by leading experts in computer science, statistics, and applied mathematics. Although the chapters can be read independently, they are designed to be read together as they lay out algorithmic, statistical, and numerical approaches in diverse but complementary ways. This book can be used both as a text for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses, and as a survey for researchers interested in understanding how applied mathematics broadly defined is being used in data science. It will appeal to anyone interested in the interdisciplinary foundations of machine learning and data science."--Site web de l'éditeur

lgli/K:\_add\!woodhead\!\ACS\1172 - Biopesticides - State of the Art and Future Opportunities (2014).pdf
Biopesticides: State Of The Art And Future Opportunities (acs Symposium Series) Coats, Joel R.; Duke, Stephen O.; Gross, Aaron D.; Seiber, James N American Chemical Society : Distributed in print by Oxford University Press, ACS Symposium Series, ACS Symposium Series 1172, 1, 2014
Resistance to conventional pesticides has been growing rapidly among all pests. Furthermore, there is increased public concern about the safety of conventional pesticides, and increased governmental restrictions have resulted in the need to identify new compounds that are safe and effective in controlling pests that are of concern to agriculture as well as to public and animal health. Biopesticides may aid in the control of such pests with fewer deleterious effects to the environment, people and animals. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines biopesticides as "pesticides derived from such natural materials as animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals" (www.epa.gov). According to the U.S. EPA's website in 2014 there were more than 430 registered biopesticides along with 1320 active product registrations. Biopesticides have seen a recent growth, which is partially due to increased advances in biotechnological tools for pest control. However, the growth has been largely spurred by the growing needs for new tools to fight pesticide resistance and safer and more benign means of pest management. This volume and the chapters contained within it resulted from the "Biopesticides: State of the Art and Future Opportunities" symposium held at the 246th ACS National Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana, September 8-12, 2013. The symposium was comprised of 38 papers in five sessions: The Big Picture, Repellents and Attractants, Insecticides and Nematicides, Products from Genetic Improvements, and Economic, Regulatory and Future Needs. Biopesticides: State of the Art and Future Opportunities offers a wealth of information that will enrich the knowledge of experts in the field of biopesticide research

Sumatra: Geology, Resources And Tectonic Evolution (geological Society Memoirs) (no. 31) A. J. Barber, M. J. Crow and J. S. Milsom Geological Society Of London 2004-01-01, Memoir (Geological Society of London), 31, London, 2005
This volume provides the first comprehensive account of the geology of Sumatra since the masterly synthesis of van Bemmelen (1949). Following the establishment of the Geological Survey of Indonesia, after WW II, the whole island has been mapped geologically at the reconnaissance level, with the collaboration of the geological surveys of the United States and the United Kingdom. The mapping programme, completed in the mid-1990s, together with supplementary data obtained by academic institutions and petroleum and mineral exploration companies, has resulted in a vast increase in geological information, which is summarized in this volume. The synthesis of structural controls on sedimentation and magmatism during the tectonic evolution of Sumatra since the late Palaeozoic has provided a background for the formation of economic deposits of metallic minerals, coal, oil and gas. The volume provides a sound basis for future geological research and for the exploration of the energy and mineral resources of the island. Also available: Origin And Evolution of the Ontong Java Plateau - ISBN 1862391572 Aspects of the Tectonic Evolution of China - ISBN 1862391564 Volcanoes in the Quarternary - ISBN 1862390495

Origin And Evolution Of The Ontong Java Plateau (geological Society Special Publication) (geological Society Special Publication) (no. 229) J G Fitton, J J Mahoney, P J Wallace and A D Saunders Geological Society of London, Geological Society of London, London, 2004
The Cretaceous submarine Ontong Java Plateau, in the western Pacific Ocean, is the most voluminous of the world's large igneous provinces (LIPs), and represents the largest known magmatic event on Earth. LIPs are the products of basaltic volcanism on a scale and at an effusion rate not seen on Earth at the present time, and their formation may have had significant effects on the Earth's climate and biosphere. The currently favoured explanation for LIP formation is the rapid decompression and melting of anomalously hot mantle in the heads of newly ascended mantle plumes. This volume summarizes the results of research aimed principally at testing the plume-head hypothesis for the formation of the Ontong Java Plateau, and presents the results of integrated studies following recent basement drilling on the plateau by the Ocean Drilling Program. Nineteen papers cover topics as diverse as petrology, geochemistry, tectonics, volcanology, palaeomagnetism and biostratigraphy. Also available:Sumatra: Geology, Resources and Tectonic Evolution (Geological Society Memoirs) - ISBN 1862391807 Tectonics of Strike-Slip Restraining and Releasing Bends - Special Publication no 290 - ISBN 1862392382 The Geological Society of LondonFounded in 1807, the Geological Society of London is the oldest geological society in the world, and one of the largest publishers in the Earth sciences. The Society publishes a wide range of high-quality peer-reviewed titles for academics and professionals working in the geosciences, and enjoys an enviable international reputation for the quality of its work. The many areas in which we publish in include:-Petroleum geology-Tectonics, structural geology and geodynamics-Stratigraphy, sedimentology and paleontology-Volcanology, magmatic studies and geochemistry-Remote sensing-History of geology-Regional geology guides

lgli/Michael Sean Mahoney - Histories of Computing (2011, Harvard University Press).pdf
Histories of Computing Michael Sean Mahoney, Thomas Haigh (editor) Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, 1st Edition, First Edition, PS, 2011
Computer technology is pervasive in the modern world, its role ever more important as it becomes embedded in a myriad of physical systems and disciplinary ways of thinking. The late Michael Sean Mahoney was a pioneer scholar of the history of computing, one of the first established historians of science to take seriously the challenges and opportunities posed by information technology to our understanding of the twentieth century. MahoneyÕs work ranged widely, from logic and the theory of computation to the development of software and applications as craft-work. But it was always informed by a unique perspective derived from his distinguished work on the history of medieval mathematics and experimental practice during the Scientific Revolution. His writings offered a new angle on very recent events and ideas and bridged the gaps between academic historians and computer scientists. Indeed, he came to believe that the field was irreducibly pluralistic and that there could be only histories of computing. In this collection, Thomas Haigh presents thirteen of MahoneyÕs essays and papers organized across three categories: historiography, software engineering, and theoretical computer science. His introduction surveys MahoneyÕs work to trace the development of key themes, illuminate connections among different areas of his research, and put his contributions into context. The volume also includes an essay on Mahoney by his former students Jed Z. Buchwald and D. Graham Burnett. The result is a landmark work, of interest to computer professionals as well as historians of technology and science.

nexusstc/NeXTSTEP Programming, Step One: Object-Oriented Applications/4641cb1bbc127ffd8aadb973d99a371a.pdf
NeXTSTEP programming : step one, object-oriented applications Simson Garfinkel; Simson L. Garfinkel; Michael K. Mahoney Telos - Springer-Verlag, Telos, the electronic library of science, Santa Clara, California, Berlin, 1993
This book is about programming computers running NeXTSTEP. It’s a nononsense, hands-on book that teaches programmers how to write application programs that take full advantage of NeXTSTEP, the operating environment from NeXT Computer Inc. Writing programs for NeXTSTEP is fundamentally different than writing programs for other computers, because NeXTSTEP represents a radical departure from conventional programming environments. One writes NeXTSTEP programs by building systems of related but distinct parts, or objects, and connecting them together to form an integrated whole. Confining different aspects of a program to different pieces makes those pieces easier to design, implement, debug, and reuse. This is what is known as object-oriented programming. NeXTSTEP embodies the principles of object oriented programming from its user interface down to its very core. This greatly simplifies the task of interfacing application programs with the NeXTSTEP operating environment. The downside is that it makes the NeXTSTEP environment very different from the environments to which most programmers are accustomed: there’s a steep curve to climb when learning to program in this easy-to-program environment (sounds strange, but it’s true). We wrote this book out of frustration: at the time, there was no single book that explained step-by-step how to write programs for NeXTSTEP. Instead, a programmer trying to approach the platform was confronted by the NeXT technical documentation and the source-code for several dozen example programs. There was no mention of style, program structure or design considerations. It seemed that there was a black art to writing programs for the black computer, along with a priesthood which promised that newcomers might one day become members — once we paid our dues. With this book, we’ve paid a lot of your dues for you. This book is for anybody who knows how to program in C and wants to do something substantial with NeXTSTEP. Our goal is to get you up-and-running as quickly as possible. This isn’t a textbook or a reference manual — Brad Cox (the inventor of Objective-C) and the technical writing department at NeXT have already written those. This book is instead a jumpingoff point. Consequently, we will occasionally sacrifice depth for breadth and brevity. You won’t learn all of the options of Interface Builder or all the obscure methods that the Text object implements by reading this book. But you'll acquire the conceptual framework necessary to understand NeXT’s excellent documentation, enabling you to discover what you need to know about the Text object and everything else.
Mahoney’s work ranged widely, from logic and the theory of computation to the development of software and applications as craft-work. In this collection, Thomas Haigh presents thirteen of Mahoney’s essays and papers organized across three categories: historiography, software engineering, and theoretical computer science. His introduction surveys Mahoney’s work to trace the development of key themes, illuminate connections among different areas of his research, and put his contributions into context. The volume also includes an essay on Mahoney by his former students Jed Z. Buchwald and D. Graham Burnett. The result is a landmark work, of interest to computer professionals as well as historians of technology and science.

The Eighth International Symposium on Environmental Concerns in Rights-of-Way Management : 12-16 September 2004, Saratoga Springs, New York, USA Lawrence P Abrahamson; John W Goodrich-Mahoney; Kevin Thomas McLoughlin; International Symposium on Environmental Concerns in Rights-of-Way Management; Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation Elsevier; Elsevier Science, Elsevier Ltd., Amsterdam, 2008
The management of rights-of-way by electric and telephone utilities, highway departments, gas pipeline companies, and railroads around the world is guided and constrained by policies and regulations to protect the environment. Companies that manage rights-of-way are required to comply with these regulations, and are seeking the most cost-effective management practices which, at the same time, demonstrate stewardship of the environment. Protection of biodiversity and sustainable development are especially important as national goals in many countries, and rights-of-way managers are seeking practical ways to include public participation in their operations. * Addresses environmental issues in rights-of-way planning and management * Provides a forum for information exchange among various agencies, industries, environmental consultants, and academic organizations * Presents peer-reviewed papers to help achieve a better understanding of current environmental issues involved in rights-of-way management Read more...

Cognition and Psychotherapy edited by Michael J. Mahoney and Arthur Freeman HARPERCOLLINS @ PUBLISHERS, New York, New York State, 1985
For almost three millennia, philosophy and its more pragmatic offspring, psychology and the cognitive sciences, have struggled to understand the complex principles reflected in the patterned opera tions of the human mind. What is knowledge? How does it relate to what we feel and do? What are the fundamental processes underlying attention, perception, intention, learning, memory, and conscious ness? How are thought, feeling, and action related, and what are the practical implications of our current knowledge for the everyday priorities of parenting, education, and counseling? Such meaningful and fascinating questions lie at the heart of contemporary attempts to build a stronger working alliance among the fields of epistemology (theories of knowledge), the cognitive sciences, and psychotherapy. The proliferation and pervasiveness of what some have called "cognitivism" throughout all quarters of modern psychology repre sent a phenomenon of paradigmatic proportions. The (re-)emergence of cognitive concepts and perspectives-whether portrayed as revo lutionary (reactive) or evolutionary (developmental) in nature-marks what may well be the single most formative theme in late twentieth century psychology. Skeptics of the cognitive movement, if it may be so called, can readily note the necessary limits and liabilities of naive forms of metaphysics and mentalism. The history of human ideas is writ large in the polarities of "in here" and "out there"-from Plato, Pythagoras, and Kant to Locke, Bacon, and Watson."
