They acted as bodyguards to the emperors and as such were used to protect them and ensure their safety; they were also an elite strategic reserve. This book traces their development and the intimate part they played in the fate of the Roman empire and its emperors. The history of the horse guards is covered from Julius Caesar to Constantine and there are sections devoted to the recruitment of horsemen, aristocratic officers, weapons and warfare, life in Rome, Gods and graves and training the armies.

L'auteur de cet ingénieux mémoire veut que le mythe grec d'Orion soit à la base même du mithriacisme romain. Il part d'une interprétation astronomique de la tauroctonie. Les éléments de cette imagerie cultuelle correspondraient à la série des principales constellations qui se trouvaient au long de l'équateur vers 100 av. J.-C, entre le Taureau et le Scorpion : Orion (= Mithra), le Petit Chien, l'Hydre (= le serpent), le Cratère (sous le Lion), le Corbeau, l'Épi (de la Vierge)... Orion a le bras droit orienté au nord et le bras gauche au sud. Or Porphyre nous dit que Mithra a le nord à sa droite et le sud à sa gauche ! Mais pourquoi identifier Orion avec Mithra ? Quel rapport a donc le héros grec avec le dieu iranien ? C'est un chasseur, ennemi du scorpion (comme Mithra). Fils de Gê (comme les géants), c'est un héros solaire en ce sens qu'il retrouve la vue face au soleil levant. Certes. Mais Gê n'est pas la pierre : Mithra est « pétrogène », et non pas fils de la Terre. Il n'est pas victime du scorpion, comme Orion dont la constellation s'enfonce sous l'horizon, quand se lève celle de son meutrier !
