From their native Jurassic landscape to your own backyard, from their ancient mastery of the planet to modern-day curiosities trapped in an age not their own, from the earth-shaking tyrannosaur to the sky-soaring pterodactyl, here are unforgettable tales-some poignant, some humorous, some offering answers to the greatest puzzle of prehistory. The Grand Game is based on the lovely fantasy played by scholars and Sherlockians that Sherlock Holmes was a real person, and that the sixty Canonical tales were actually written by Dr. Watson and reflect true historical events. Of course, the only problem is that the good doctor was frequently careless in keeping straight the dates and details from one story to the next, leaving the path open for scholars to explain the discrepancies and inconsistencies. As a result, numerous vexing questions have stimulated the speculations of distinguished scholars for more than a century, and many of the best of these appear in this volume of classic articles covering the years 19021959. It includes articles by such luminaries as Ronald Knox, A.A. Milne, Dorothy L. Sayers, Christopher Morley, Rex Stout, Anthony Boucher, Red Smith, and even Franklin D. Roosevelt. The sixty-six articles contained in this remarkable book are among the best examples of "the grand game" to be produced during the first six decades of the twentieth century.

Renewing Black Intellectual History : The Ideological and Material Foundations of African American Thought Adolph L. Reed Jr.; Kenneth W. Warren; Judith Stein; William P. Jones; Toure F. Reed; Preston H. Smith II; Michele Mitchell; Dean E. Robinson; Madhu Dubey London ; New York: Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), [Place of publication not identified], 2015
Reflecting critically on the discipline of African American studies is a complicated undertaking. Making sense of the black American experience requires situating it within the larger cultural, political-economic, and ideological dynamics that shape American life. This volume moves away from privileging racial commonality as the fulcrum of inquiry and moves toward observing the quality of the accounts scholars have rendered of black American life. This book maps the changing conditions of black political practice and experience from Emancipation to Obama with excursions into the Jim Crow era, Black Power radicalism, and the Reagan revolt. Here are essays, classic and new, that define historically and conceptually discrete problems affecting black Americans as these problems have been shaped by both politics and scholarly fashion. A key goal of the book is to come to terms with the changing terrain of American life in view of major Civil Rights court decisions and legislation.

The Best American Essays 1995 (Best American Essays) Jamaica Kincaid; Robert Atwan; Joseph Brodsky; Joel Agee; Harold Brodkey; Dudley Clendinen; Bernard Cooper; W. S Di Piero; Josephine Foo; William H Gass; Henry Louis Gates; Edward Hoagland; Diana Kappel-Smith; Maxine Kumin; James Alan McPherson; Edna O'Brien; Cynthia Ozick; Grace Paley; Charles Simic; John Edgar Wideman; Tobias Wolff; Elaine Scarry Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company, The Best American essays, Boston [u.a.], United States, 1995
With a suspicious eye for "the fixed form or the fixed category of any kind," Jamaica Kincaid, this year's guest editor, has assembled a bold assortment of works by some of today's finest prose stylists, including Edward Hoagland, Grace Paley, James A. McPherson, William H. Gass, Cynthia Ozick, John Edgar Wideman, and Joseph Brodsky. Showcased here are preeminent pieces from periodicals such as the Alaska Quarterly Review, Harper's Magazine, the Los Angeles Times Magazine, and Prairie Schooner. Together they bring readers into remarkably diverse realms, from the blues clubs of Chicago to yesteryear's Hollywood Avenue, from the Women's House of Detention in Greenwich Village to the inviting lushness of a vegetable garden. Topical and trenchant, impertinent and confiding, this wide-ranging display appeals to poetry, social protest, the nuances of language, and even the politics of "good hair," all giving voice to the vibrant dialogue that characterizes American life.

SUMMARY:Scientist, author, and Earth-dweller, explores the many potential natural and man-made catastrophes that could change life as we know it, or erase us from the face of the Earth. Natural properties and laws might change at any time, rendering life on this planet--or anywhere in the universe--impossible. But the disasters that are most imminent are in our power to control--technology, nuclear warfare, pollution... Natural forces far more powerful than man might destroy us. Or they may have nothing to do with bringing about the end. Book jacket.

The Ecology and Management of Wetlands : Volume 1: Ecology of Wetlands Donal D. Hook, W. H. McKee Jr, H. K. Smith, James Gregory, V. G. Burrell Jr, M. Richard DeVoe, R. E. Sojka, Stephen Gilbert, Roger Banks, L. H. Stolzy, Chris Brooks, Thomas D. Matthews, T. H. Shear (auth.) Springer Science & Business Media, 1, 1987
This book contains the proceedings of a symposium held at the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina, USA, 16-20 June 1986. The seed for this symposium arose from a group of physiologists , soU scientists and biochemists that met in Leningrad, USSR in July 1975 at the 12th Botanical Conference in a Session organized by Professor B.B. Vartepetian. This group and others later conspired to contribute to a book entitled Plant Life in Anaerobic Environments (eds. D. D. Hook and R. M. M. Crawford, Ann Arbor Science, 1978). Several contributors to the book suggested in 1983 that a broad-scoped symposium on wetlands would be useful (a) in facilitating communication among the diverse research groups involved in wetlands research (b) in bringing researchers and managers together and (c) in presenting a com prehensive and balanced coverage on the status of ecology ami management of wetlands from a global perspective. With this encouragement, the senior editor organized a Plan ning Committee that encompassed expertise from many disciplines of wetland scientists and managers. This Committee, with input from their colleagues around the world, organized a symposium that addressed almost every aspect of wetland ecology and management. Erscheinungsdatum: 18.05.2012

For the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, here is a collection of writings that charts our nation's long, heroic confrontation with its most poisonous evil. It's an inspiring moral and political struggle whose evolution parallels the story of America itself. To advance their cause, the opponents of slavery employed every available literary form: fiction and poetry, essay and autobiography, sermons, pamphlets, speeches, hymns, plays, even children's literature. This is the first anthology to take the full measure of a body of writing that spans nearly two centuries and, exceptionally for its time, embraced writers black and white, male and female. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Phillis Wheatley, and Olaudah Equiano offer original, even revolutionary, eighteenth century responses to slavery. With the nineteenth century, an already diverse movement becomes even more varied: the impassioned rhetoric of Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison joins the fiction of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Louisa May Alcott, and William Wells Brown; memoirs of former slaves stand alongside protest poems by John Greenleaf Whittier, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Lydia Sigourney; anonymous editorials complement speeches by statesmen such as Charles Sumner and Abraham Lincoln. Features helpful notes, a chronology of the antislavery movement, and a16-page color insert of illustrations.LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation's literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America's best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.
