The Piri Reis Map of 1513
Gregory C. McIntosh, Norman J. W. Thrower
University of Georgia Press, University of Georgia Press, First Edition, 2000
One of the most beautiful maps to survive the Great Age of Discoveries, the 1513 world map drawn by Ottoman admiral Piri Reis is also one of the most mysterious. Gregory McIntosh has uncovered new evidence in the map that shows it to be among the most important ever made. This detailed study offers new commentary and explication of a major milestone in cartography. Correcting earlier work of Paul Kahle and pointing out the traps that have caught subsequent scholars, McIntosh disproves the dubious conclusion that the Reis map embodied Columbus's Third Voyage map of 1498, showing that it draws instead on the Second Voyage of 1493-1496. He also refutes the popular misinterpretation that Reis's depictions of Antarctica are evidence of either ancient civilizations or extraterrestrial visitation. McIntosh brings together all that has been previously known about the map and also assembles for the first time the translations of all inscriptions on the map and analyzes all place-names given for New World and Atlantic islands. His work clarifies long-standing mysteries and opens up new ways of looking at the history of exploration.

Wolf That I Am (Oklahoma Project for Discourse and Theory (Paperback))
Fred McTaggart; foreword by William T. Hagan
Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, Oklahoma, 1984

The Mesquakies—popularly known as the Fox, or Sac and Fox, Indians—were a large and powerful people in the Great Lakes region in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Now they live on approximately 3,000 acres of communal property near Tama, Iowa, surrounded by white middle-class farmers.

Wolf That I Am is the story of a young white academic’s encounter with the Mesquakies whom he got to know while collecting folklore for his dissertation. Fred McTaggart had expected to find a dying oral culture. Instead, he found a thriving way of life based on families and clans, linking the present-day Mesquakie Indians with previous generations, including ancestors who lived before the world was created in its present form. This encounter with a people who live ideas instead of thinking them inspired McTaggart to unlock secrets within himself.

GHOST DANCE - The Massacre at Wounded Knee
John Norman [Norman f.c]
D A W Books, Incorporated, pb, 1979-11-00
Here, in this place, her meaning as woman is clear. Here, apart from symbols and disguises, she stands as a woman, the prize of man. Does she, this woman, now know her femaleness? Does she understand? Is the meaning of her excruciatingly desirable body now brought home to her? Does she now understand the significance of her sex: that she is female, that nature has designed her for man? Yes, thought Chance, she is very beautiful, marvelously incredibly beautiful - Miss Lucia Turner, educated Eastern gentle-woman, sophisticated and refined, feminist - captive female - suddenly expectedly shamefully simply captive female. Reduced utterly, she, miss Lucia Turner, gifted and beautiful, to ancient primitive essentialities - owned, literally owned..

Calcium-binding proteins in health and disease : based on the 5. International Symposium on Calcium-Binding Proteins in Health and Disease held at the Asilomar Conference Center, Pacific Grove, California, from November 30 to December 5, 1986
Anthony W Norman; International Symposium on Calcium Binding Proteins in Health and Disease (5, 1986, Pacific Grove, Calif.)
Academic Press, Incorporated, Elsevier Ltd., Burlington, 1987
Calcium-Binding Proteins in Health and Disease includes the papers prepared by the invited speakers as well as many of the free communications. The contributions are grouped according to their general subject matter, based on the classification made by the authors, e.g., Extracellular Metabolism: Calcium Homeostasis; Low-Affinity Calcium-Binding Proteins. There can be little doubt that calcium-binding proteins is a field of scientific endeavor which will continue to produce results of great interest to modern biology. This book is divided into eight sections, the first of which, tackle extracellular calcium metabolism or calcium homeostasis. The next sections focus on topics such as low-affinity calcium-binding proteins; calcium and membranes, channels and transport (pumps); the role of calcium in complex metabolic processes; and gene structure of calcium-binding proteins and their expression. Other chapters cover physical studies on calcium-binding proteins, including X-ray, crystallography, and NMR; structure-function relationships of calcium-binding proteins and their targets; and calcium-binding proteins in health and disease. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of biology and medicine.

John Norman [Norman f.c]
D A W Books, Incorporated, pb, 1981-11-00
From kidnapped collegian to a woman’s slave, from landless fugitive to warrior-captain, the life of Jason Marshall on Earth’s orbital twin was a constant struggle against the naked power and barbaric traditions of glorious Gor. Now, in the heat of a desperate naval battle against overwhelming odds, Jason faced the pivotal hours of his Gorean career. For him victory would mean a homeland, a warrior’s honors, and the lovely Earthgirl who was the prize he had long sought. Defeat would mean degradation worse than the chains he had once escaped. GUARDSMAN OF GOR is the blazing climax of this saga of one man against an entire world.

The genius of C. Warren Thornthwaite, climatologist-geographer
Mather, John R. (John Russell), 1923-2003; Sanderson, Marie
Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 1996
xiv, 226 pages : 23 cm This well-written biography of outstanding climatologist C. Warren Thornthwaite (1899-1963) was written from unpublished letters and other accounts by his contemporaries, and includes a complete bibliography of his published works. For both general readers and specialists, it traces the chronology of Thornthwaite's achievements and his relationships with other important figures in American geography. Thornthwaite's Laboratory of Climatology, located in a farm setting at Seabrook and later Centerton, New Jersey, was a mecca for climatologists from all parts of the world. His most important scientific contributions were his new, "rational" classification of world climates in 1948 and his concept of evapotranspiration and its use in climatic water budget. Having recognized that the relative moistness or dryness of a climate can only be determined if one compares precipitation with potential evapotranspiration, Thornthwaite compared supply with demand on a daily, monthly, and annual basis and was able to obtain quantitative values of such factors as water runoff, irrigation need, and water storage in the soil. Climatologists, hydrologists, and agriculturalists all have been touched by Thornthwaite's innovations. This engaging account of his achievements and his personal life explores his methodology and places his work in the perspective of his times Includes bibliographical references (pages 213-215) and index 1. The Power of Money in Congressional Campaigns, 1880-2006, Vol. 6
David C. W. Parker
Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 2008
A new understanding of what really matters in our elections -- Prevailing wisdom holds that the pivot of American political campaigns has shifted over the past century from the parties to the candidate. David C. W. Parker challenges this conventional notion, arguing that campaigns center on neither orientation but are, more simply, resource dependent. The Power of Money in Congressional Campaigns examines the historical development of party, interest-group, and candidate power in the American congressional election process. Parker takes a broad view of the electoral terrain, considering both primary and general elections, and discerns distinct patterns emerging during the twentieth century. He proposes a new theoretical model based on the need for candidates to accumulate enough financing and reputation to compete successfully, showing the importance of the rules governing this process. Analyzing case studies of elections over more than a century, Parker argues that campaign behavior boils down to the determination to gather the resources needed to win. He shows that changes in electoral rules over time have affected the strategies candidates and parties use to accumulate campaign resources. He also suggests how the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act of 2002 may influence the relationships among political actors and affect the quality of democratic discourse. Unlike many studies of the election process, this book provides a broad understanding of why candidates, parties, and interest groups pursue particular strategies. The Power of Money in Congressional Campaigns is a corrective analysis of how candidates campaign, and how Americans choose their leaders

The roots of Concern : writings on Anabaptist renewal, 1952-1957
Virgil Vogt; Paul Peachey; John Howard Yoder; John W Miller; David A Shank; C. Norman Kraus
Eugene, Or.: Cascade Books, Lightning Source (Tier 4), Eugene, 2009
In the aftermath of World War II, seven American Mennonite graduate students spent eleven days together in Amsterdam discussing their concerns around the state of North American Mennonite churches. Out of this historic gathering came a publication project known as Concern: A Pamphlet Series for Questions of Christian Renewal. While the series extended from 1952 to the early 1970s, the first four volumes, now printed in this single volume, comprise the roots, that is, the foundations that preceded the many articles that were written thereafter. Throughout The Roots of Concern, the discussion revolves around the recovery of an Anabaptist view of church life and discipleship. Here we find the seeds of a theme that would gain much attention in later years: the primary identity of the church as alternative community as opposed to its positive identification with the world. The fourteen articles in this volume cover a variety of issues such as form and spirit in the church, preaching, fellowship, discipleship, dissent, and property. An article coauthored by Yoder reveals his seminal thoughts around Mennonite church organization in relation to both biblical and contemporary denominational structures.

Cleveland : a metropolitan reader
W. Dennis Keating (editor), Norman Krumholz (editor), David C. Perry (editor)
The Kent State University Press, Later Printing, PT, 1995
After enjoying exceptional growth at the turn of the last century, Clevelands fortunes, like that of many metropolitan centers, have sharply declined. How much of this change is due to characteristics of growth and development, the outmigration of population and investment technological advances, and the changing racial composition of the population? On the eve of its bicentennial, Cleveland serves as a paradigm of American urbanization by providing lessons regarding urban America, our communities, and ourselves. Cleveland, A Metropolitan Reader emphasizes the political economy, social development, and history of Cleveland from 1796 to the present. One of the oldest communities in the United States, it is constantly remaking itself-serving as a model of innovative transformation for other industrial cities. The contributors to this volume, many of whom are contemporary urban scholars, address current issues through an interdisciplinary collection of essays. Also included are commentaries written by the leaders of Cleveland-those now actively working to transform the city. Although each has its own topic, all the essays examine ways in which technological restructuring and social relationships interact to generate a distinctively American set of urban problems. The authors of these essays do not necessarily agree on the nature of Clevelands problems or on appropriate solutions, but together they provide a broad perspective on the reality of a great citys growth, decline, and reinvention. An ideal book for introductory urban studies courses, Cleveland, A Metropolitan Reader will be of interest to scholars of urban studies, urban planning, history, and politics as well as to those generally interested in Cleveland, the Midwest, and the broad range of challenges facing most American cities as we enter the 21st century.
