Growing Up with Clemente by Richard Peterson The Kent State University Press, Kent, Ohio, Ohio, 2009
A post-World War II memoir of a childhood in working-class Pittsburgh "Alongside August Wilson and John Edgar Wideman, Richard Peterson is among the most evocative chroniclers of Pittsburgh, their colorful hometown. I loved Growing Up With Clemente for both its unnostalgic lyricism and its utter honesty." --David Maraniss, author of Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero "Richard Peterson's memoir reminds you of Faulkner's assertion that man will not merely endure, he will prevail. For that's what Peterson has done, and he makes this story about the grandson of a Lithuanian immigrant--this quintessential American story--new all over again. It's vivid. Fascinating. Troubling. Sad. And finally satisfying. A triumph both in the living and in the telling. I read it in two sittings, fully in its thrall." --Kent Haruf, author of Plainsong Pete Peterson's prose picks you up by the scruff of the neck and the seat of the pants and pitches you deep into a place and time that will hurry you back to your own coming of age. He is Pittsburgh to the bone and his writing--trenchant, crisp and painfully honest--reflects it. If you regard the place where you grew up as special, this book is for you. I commend Growing Up With Clemente to you with a writer's highest praise: I wish I'd written it." --Phil Musick, is a veteran Pittsburgh journalist and author of six books, including a biography of Roberto Clemente. "An engaging, clear-eyed account of a working-class childhood in Pittsburgh, set against the backdrop of Roberto Clemente's storied career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Peterson is forthright in his depiction of the limited hopes and expectations of working-class kids in what was then a toxic industrial landscape. Rich in period detail and sense of place, Growing Up With Clemente is above all a book about memory and about ambiguous memories nonetheless cherished, a revealing excursion into a time now gone." --Laurie Graham, author of Singing in the City: The Bonds of Home in an Industrial Landscape "I always enjoy Pete Peterson's writing immensely. His prose is consistently vivid, poignant, smart, and utterly without pretension. Growing Up With Clemente is no exception." --Jeffrey Hammond, Reeves Distinguished Professor in the Liberal Arts, St. Mary's College of Maryland Growing Up With Clemente is a personal history of the hardscrabble life of Pittsburgh's South Side during the city's post-World War II renaissance. It is also the intimate story of an American boy who played baseball on the city's dilapidated playgrounds and rooted for his beloved sports teams while growing up and struggling in Pittsburgh's blue-collar neighborhoods. Though among the worst professional teams in the 1950s, the Pirates and Steelers still inspired the working-class dream of a life beyond the steel mills. And in the midst of it all was the towering, isolated figure of Roberto Clemente. Clemente would eventually become a symbol of pride, loyalty, courage, and sacrifice for a city that had initially rejected him and for a young boy who spent his youth looking for a hero but had to grow up before understanding Clemente's greatness. With sensitivity and eloquence, Richard Peterson captures a time and place easily overlooked or forgotten but important to understanding the significance of sports in shaping America's working-class character. Whether discussing race, sex, class, or any of the other larger issues of the world in which he grew up, Peterson conveys an honesty rarely found in memoirs. Growing Up With Clemente is an engaging read, sure to be a hit in both the literature and sports communities.

nexusstc/I Remember Like Today: The Auto-Lite Strike of 1934/a4c8ad521746489a41f943c0b19fd6f1.pdf
I remember like today : the Auto-Lite strike of 1934 by Philip A. Korth and Margaret R. Beegle Michigan State University Press, 1, 1988
The strikes at Auto-Lite in Toledo in he spring of 1934 secured a victory for the fledgling Automobile Workers Federal Union Local 18384 of the AFL and permanently altered the nature of worker-employer relationships in Toledo. This victory assured that working men and women in Toledo would have some power over their working lives and a voice in their community. Workers in Toledo today owe a debt of gratitude to the "unholy thirteen" who huddled over the fires burning in drums in front of Auto-Lite and who dreamed of freedom and dignity. And as today grows out of yesterday, so the workers in 1934 faced a set of conditions and attitudes shaped decades before by the industrial evolution of Toledo, the development of the automobile industry, and the historical struggles of their ancestors. Cover Photograph: An Auto-Lite striker returns a smoke bomb thrown by factory strike breakers. (May, 1934.) Orral history adds color to historical econstruction, but it also enhances understanding; it personalizes history through concrete experience and thus adds a dimension difficult to capture through conventional historical methods. To the thoughtful scholar, history is never dead; but it may sometimes need reviving, and oral history can breathe new life into it. Oral traditions are not merely an anachronistic residue from prehistorical cultures but are important molders of modern cultures. The struggle for dignity and freedom, two abstract terms so central to the meaning of American history, was not abstract. It occurred in real and concrete circumstances where ordinary people asserted themselves. The struggle presented here helped create American culture. Knowing about that struggle can help us understand where we came from and who we are. It may even teach us something about the human condition. Philip A. Korth is a professor of American Thought and Language at Michigan State University. Margaret R. Beegle is with the History Department at the University of Minnesota.

Conflicting memories on the "river of death" : the Chickamauga Battlefield and the Spanish-American War, 1863-1933 Bradley S. Keefer The Kent State University Press, First Edition, US, 2011
How veterans of two wars constructed contrasting meanings for one sacred landscape On September 19 and 20, 1863, the Union Army of the Cumberland and the Confederate Army of Tennessee fought a horrific battle along Chickamauga Creek in northern Georgia. Although the outcome of this chaotic action was a stunning Confederate victory, the campaign ended with a resounding Union triumph at Chattanooga. The ill-fated Army of Tennessee never won another major battle, while the Army of the Cumberland was ultimately separated from its beloved commander, George H. Thomas. Beginning with an account of the fierce fighting in 1863, author Bradley Keefer examines how the veterans of both sides constructed memories of this battle during the three decades leading to the creation of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. By preserving this most prominent battlefield, the former foes created a sacred, commemorative landscape that memorialized mutual valor, sacrifice, and sectional reconciliation. Three years after the parks 1895 dedication, the War Department made the Chickamauga battlefield the main training site for volunteer troops during the Spanish-American War and temporarily renamed it Camp George H. Thomas. Firsthand accounts by the camps soldiers initially reinforced the heroic connections between the Civil War and the war with Spain. However, rapidly deteriorating conditions at the camp contributed to a typhoid fever epidemic that killed more than 700 men. The resulting scandal created a rift between the Civil War veterans, led by park founder Henry V. Boynton, and the disgruntled Spanish-American War soldiers who claimed that the park was unhealthy, the War Department negligent, and the deaths unnecessary. The aging Civil War veterans worked tirelessly to restore the park to its former condition by obliterating the remnants of Camp George H. Thomas and obscuring its place in memory. For the veterans of the Spanish-American War, the ambiguous memories surrounding their ordeal at Camp George H. Thomas reflected their inability to make a significant dent in the nations collective consciousness. The neglect and victimization that many Spanish and Philippine war veterans felt they had endured at the camp continued well into the twentieth century as they and their accomplishments were gradually overshadowed by the legacy of the Civil War and the epic significance of the two World Wars.

Letters: Centenary Edition of the Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne edited by Eileen Gillooly and Deirdre David Ohio State Univ Pr (Txt); Ohio State University Press, Columbus, Ohio, 2009
Edited by Eileen Gillooly and Deirdre David, Contemporary Dickens is a collection of essays that presents some of the most intriguing work being undertaken in Dickens studies today.Through an emphasis on the nineteenth-century origins of our current critical preoccupations and ways of knowing, these essays reveal Dickens to be our contemporary. The contributors argue that such issues as gender and sexuality, environmentalism, and the construction of national identity were frequently explored and sometimes problematically resolved by Dickens himself. They also illuminate the importance of Dickenss place in our current reassessment of critical methodologies. Drawing freely upon a variety of reading strategies (materialist, deconstructive, new historical, psychoanalytic, and feminist), the essays disclose new aspects of Dickenss engagements with a number of Victorian concernsmoral philosophy, the psychology of the emotions, and life writing among themthat have once again emerged as significant objects of study in early-twenty-first century criticism.Looking at such familiar topics from fresh perspectives, Contemporary Dickens is an original and challenging contribution to Dickens studies in particular and Victorian criticism in general. Contemporary Dickens will appeal to general readers and students of Victorian culture, as well as specialists in nineteenth-century literature, cultural studies, literary formalism, psychology, and gender studies.

Portraits of the Artist as a Young Woman: Painting and the Novel in France and Britain, 1800–1860 focuses on a decisive period in that process of professional self-invention and maps out the concrete and symbolic roles played by women painters, real and fictional, in the construction of female artistic identity in the aesthetic and the public spheres. Alexandra K. Wettlaufer examines the diverse and complex ways canonical and non-canonical women painters and novelists—including Anne Brontë, Sydney Owenson, Margaret Gillies, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, George Sand, and Hortense Haudebourt-Lescot—figured and brought forth the radical image of a female subject representing the world. Wettlaufer brings to light a rich and nearly forgotten culture of women’s artistic production, allowing us to understand the nineteenth-century in more complex and nuanced ways across the borders of gender, genre, and nation. In her close readings of paintings by women and novels about women painting, she charts the political and cultural resonances of this artistic self-representation, tracing its evolution through themes of “The Studio” (Part I), “Cosmopolitan Visions” (Part II), and “The Portrait” (Part III). By pairing painting and literature in a single study that also considers works from two distinct but closely related cultures, Portraits of the Artist as a Young Woman locates the interpretation of these works in the dialogic context in which they were created and consumed, highlighting aesthetic and political intersections between nineteenth-century British and French art, literature, and feminism that are too often elided by the disciplinary boundaries of scholarship.

Their Search For An Identity As American Girls That Would Not Require The Abandonment Of Jewish Tradition And Culture Mirrored The Struggle Of Their Families And Communities For Integration Into American Society. While Focusing On Their Lives As Girls, Not The Adults They Would Later Become, Klapper Draws On The Papers Of Such Figures As Henrietta Szold, Founder Of Hadassah; Edna Ferber, Pulitzer Prize-winning Author Of Showboat; And Marie Syrkin, Literary Critic And Zionist. Klapper Also Analyzes The Diaries, Memoirs, And Letters Of Hundreds Of Other Girls Whose Later Lives And Experiences Have Been Lost To History. Building Utopia : Erecting Russia's First Modern City, 1930 Austin, Richard Cartwright, 1934- The Kent State University Press, Baker & Taylor Publisher Services (BTPS), Kent [Ohio], 2004
Perhaps the most challenging project under Stalin's first five-year plan was the race to build Europe's largest automobile factory and an adjacent city in just 18 months. The site was Nizhny Novgorod, later named Gorky. To design and construct both factory and city, Soviet officials approached the premier industrial builder in America, the Austin Company of Cleveland, Ohio. From near-breakdown during the initial months, through a Russian winter that called for bravery and ingenuity, to a frantic race toward completion in the final month, Building Utopia reveals the humanity of both communists and capitalists and the contrasts between Russian and American cultures.

Christianity and Public Culture in Africa (Cambridge Centre of African Studies) Harri Englund Ohio University Press, Cambridge Centre of African Studies series, 1st pbk. printing, Athens, 2012, ©2011
Christianity and Public Culture in Africa takes readers beyond familiar images of religious politicians and populations steeped in spirituality. It shows how critical reason and Christian convictions have combined in surprising ways as African Christians confront issues such as national constitutions, gender relations, and the continuing struggle with HIV/AIDS. The wide-ranging essays included here explore rural Africa and the continent’s major cities, colonial and missionary legacies, and mass media images in the twenty-first century. They also reveal the diversity of Pentecostalism in Africa and highlight the region’s remarkable denominational diversity. Scholars and students alike will find these essays timely and impressive. The contributors demonstrate how the public significance of Christianity varies across time and place. They explore rural Africa and the continent’s major cities, and colonial and missionary situations, as well as mass-mediated ideas and images in the twenty-first century. They also reveal the plurality of Pentecostalism in Africa and keep in view the continent’s continuing denominational diversity. Studentsand scholars will find these topical studies to be impressive in scope. Contributors: Barbara M. Cooper, Harri Englund, Marja Hinfelaar, Nicholas Kamau-Goro, Birgit Meyer, Michael Perry Kweku Okyerefo, Damaris Parsitau, Ruth Prince, James A. Pritchett, Ilana van Wyk

The Woman Painter in Victorian Literature Losano, Antonia Jacqueline. Columbus: Ohio State University Press, 1 edition, March 8, 2008

The nineteenth century saw a marked rise both in the sheer numbers of women active in visual art professions and in the discursive concern for the woman artist in fiction, the periodical press, art history, and politics. The Woman Painter in Victorian Literature argues that Victorian women writers used the controversial figure of the woman painter to intervene in the discourse of aesthetics. These writers were able to assert their own status as artistic producers through the representation of female visual artists.

Women painters posed a threat to the traditional heterosexual erotic art scenarios-a male artist and a male viewer admiring a woman or feminized art object. Antonia Losano traces an actual movement in history in which women writers struggled to rewrite the relations of gender and art to make a space for female artistic production. She examines as well the disruption female artists caused in the socioeconomic sphere. Losano offers close readings of a wide array of Victorian writers, particularly those works classified as noncanonical-by Anne Thackeray Ritchie, Margaret Oliphant, Anne Brontë, and Mrs. Humphrey Ward-and a new look at better-known novels such as Jane Eyre and Daniel Deronda, focusing on the pivotal social and aesthetic meanings of female artistic production in these texts. Each of the novels considered here is viewed as a contained, coherent, and complex aesthetic treatise that coalesces around the figure of the female painter.

The pattern in the web : the mythical poetry of Charles Williams King Jr., Roma A. The Kent State University Press, Kent State University Press, Kent, Ohio, 1990
1 online resource (x, 189 pages) : Charles Williams has achieved considerable reputation for his novels. He has been recognized as a brilliant theologian and a sensitive literary critic. But Williams himself wished most to be remembered as a poet, and trusted his future literary reputation to the two-volume series of poems on the Arthurian theme, Taliessin Through Logres and The Region of the Summer Stars. Of the first volume Williams wrote: "The matter and the style require and reward attention. The poems do not so much tell a story or describe a process as express states or principles of experience. The names and incidents of the Arthurian myth are taken as starting-points for investigation and statement on common and profound experience." In this first full-length study of these poems, they receive, in both matter and style, the close attention that Williams requested. The emphasis in this study is on the quality of these poems as poetry and only secondarily upon their religious content. Although essentially Christian, they are placed within the context of the multifaceted, many-changing forms of recurring myths. Thus they represent one of the few attempts in the twentieth century to encapsulate and age-old and ever-recurring "pattern in the web" in a brilliant structure that is thoroughly modern Includes bibliographical references (pages 179-180) and index Print version record Electronic reproduction. Spline models for observational data : Based on a series of 10 lectures at Ohio State University at Columbus, Mar. 23-27, 1987 Grace Wahba, 1934- SIAM: Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, CBMS-NSF Regional Conference series in applied mathematics -- 59, Philadelphia, Pa, United States, 1990
This book serves well as an introduction into the more theoretical aspects of the use of spline models. It develops a theory and practice for the estimation of functions from noisy data on functionals. The simplest example is the estimation of a smooth curve, given noisy observations on a finite number of its values. Convergence properties, data based smoothing parameter selection, confidence intervals, and numerical methods are established which are appropriate to a number of problems within this framework. Methods for including side conditions and other prior information in solving ill posed inverse problems are provided. Data which involves samples of random variables with Gaussian, Poisson, binomial, and other distributions are treated in a unified optimization context. Experimental design questions, i.e., which functionals should be observed, are studied in a general context. Extensions to distributed parameter system identification problems are made by considering implicitly defined functionals.

The Waffen SS : Hitler's elite guard at war, 1939-1945 by George H. Stein. -- Ithaca: Cornell University Press, Cornell paperbacks ed, Ithaca, N.Y, New York State, 1984
This landmark study, first published by Cornell University Press in 1966, shows how Hitler's elite army grew from a praetorian guard of barely 28,000 men at the beginning of the Second World War to a combat-hardened army of more than 500,000 in 1945. George H. Stein examines in detail the structure and organization of the Waffen SS and describes the rigid personnel selection and intensive physical, military, and ideological training that helped to create the tough and dedicated cadre around which the larger force of the later war years was built.

FEDERALISM AND THE WELFARE STATE: NEW WORLD AND EUROPEAN EXPERIENCES; ED. BY HERBERT OBINGER edited by Herbert Obinger, Stephan Leibfried, and Francis G. Castles Cambridge ; New York: Cambridge University Press, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, UK, 2005
"In this unique and provocative contribution to the literatures of political science and social policy, ten leading experts question prevailing views that federalism always inhibits the growth of social solidarity. Their comparative study of the evolution of political institutions and welfare states in the six oldest federal states - Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, the US - reveals that federalism can facilitate and impede social policy development. Development is contingent on several time-dependent factors, including degree of democratization, type of federalism, and the stage of welfare state development and early distribution of social policy responsibility. The reciprocal nature of the federalism-social policy relationship also becomes apparent: the authors identify a set of important bypass structures within federal systems that have resulted from welfare state growth. In an era of retrenchment and unravelling unitary states, this study suggests that federalism may actually protect the welfare state, and welfare states may enhance national integration."--pub. desc

Plain Dealing : Ohio Politics and Journalism Viewed From the Press Gallery Zimmerman, Richard G., 1934- The Kent State University Press, Baker & Taylor Publisher Services (BTPS), Kent, Ohio, 2006
A collection of political remembrances from a longtime Statehouse and Washington bureau reporterSon of an Ohio Supreme Court Justice and longtime political reporter, Rick Zimmerman presents Ohio politics from the inside. He began learning about Ohio politics and politicians as a young boy, sitting at the dinner table presided over by his father, Judge Charles Ballard Zimmerman. The author says his “father was a Democrat of sorts, but identified with the Jeffersonian wing of the party. In short, he was a conservative and a favorable mention of Franklin Roosevelt was practically banned in our house.” Yet, in spite of these philosophical leanings, the elder Zimmerman was truly nonpartisan as far as his political tales were concerned, with an opinion about most political leaders from both parties, that were for the most part negative, a “perspective which my later critics likely would suggest I inherited,” contends Zimmerman. In the same way his father entertained with his reminiscences, author Rick Zimmerman tells stories of and on Ohio's politicians and their machinations, including governors (James Rhodes and Mike DiSalle), senators, and congressmen. His discussions of Watergate, his African sabbatical, and the National Press Club and reflections on the state of journalism are refreshing, witty, and insightful. Plain Dealing is an engaging memoir that doubles as an irreverent look at Ohio's political history.

The State of State Reforms in Latin America (Latin American Development Forum) Lora, Eduardo(Editor) World Bank Publications, Latin American Development, 2006
"Latin America suffered a profound state crisis in the 1980s, which prompted not only the wave of macroeconomic and deregulation reforms known as the Washington Consensus, but also a wide variety of institutional or 'second generation' reforms. The State of State Reform in Latin America reviews and assesses the outcomes of these less studied institutional reforms. This book examines four major areas of institutional reform: a) political institutions and the state organization; b) fiscal institutions, such as budget, tax and decentralization institutions; c) public institutions in charge of sectoral economic policies (financial, industrial, and infrastructure); and d) social sector institutions (pensions, social protection, and education). In each of these areas, the authors summarize the reform objectives, describe and measure their scope, assess the main outcomes, and identify the obstacles for implementation, especially those of an institutional nature"-- Publisher's description

Morkinskinna: The Earliest Icelandic Chronicle Of The Norwegian Kings (1030-1157) Morkinskinna. English translated with introduction and notes by Theodore M. Andersson and Kari Ellen Gade Ithaca: Cornell University Press, Islandica, Cornell paperbacks ed, Ithaca, 2012
Morkinskinna ("rotten parchment"), the first full-length chronicle of the kings of medieval Norway (1030-1157), forms the basis of the Icelandic chronicle tradition. Based ultimately on an original from ca. 1220, the single defective manuscript was written in Iceland ca. 1275. The present volume, the first translation of Morkinskinna in any language, makes this literary milestone available to a general readership, with introduction and commentary to clarify its position in the history of medieval Icelandic letters. The book is designed to be used by readers with no knowledge of Icelandic. The translation is keyed to, and may be used in conjunction with, the existing diplomatic editions. Notes on the manuscript problems, as well as introductory and appended matter, augment the text. Above all, Kari Ellen Gade's edition of the skaldic stanzas provides a substantial initial step toward a future edition of the Icelandic text: Morkinskinna is the first large-scale repository of skaldic verse. Morkinskinna also includes many semi-independent tales that recount the adventures of individual Icelanders at the Norwegian court. These tales, with their often humorous or ironic inflections, shift the focus of the chronicle from the deeds of the kings to the Icelandic perception of Norwegian royalty.

CageTalk: Dialogues with and about John Cage (Eastman Studies in Music) (Eastman Studies in Music) Peter Dickinson; John Cage Rochester, NY: University of Rochester Press, Boydell & Brewer, Rochester, NY, 2006
Revealing unpublished interviews with John Cage and some of his closest colleagues, including Virgil Thomson, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Pauline Oliveros, Merce Cunningham, and David Tudor.John Cage was one of America's most renowned composers from the 1940s until his death in 1992. But he was also a much-admired writer and artist, and a uniquely attractive personality able to present his ideas engagingly wherever he went. As an interview subject he was a consummate professional. The main source of CageTalk: Dialogues with and about John Cage is a panoply of vivid and compulsively readable interviews given to Peter Dickinson in the late 1980s for a BBC Radio 3 documentary. The original BBC program lasted an hour, but the full discussions with Cage and many of the main figures connected with him were not published until the first edition of this book.CageTalk also includes earlier BBC interviews with Cage, including ones by the renowned literary critic Frank Kermode and art critic David Sylvester. And Dickinson, the editor of this volume, contributes little-known source material about Cage's Musicircus and Roaratorio as well as a substantial introduction exploring the multiple roles that Cage's varied and challenging output played during much of the twentieth century and continuesto play in the early twenty-first. Apart from the long interview with Cage himself, there are discussions with Bonnie Bird, Earle Brown, Merce Cunningham, Minna Lederman, Otto Luening, Jackson Mac Low, Peadar Mercier, Pauline Oliveros, John Rockwell, Kurt Schwertsik, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Virgil Thomson, David Tudor, La Monte Young, and Paul Zukovsky. Most of the interviews were given to Peter Dickinson but there are others involving Rebecca Boyle,Anthony Cheevers, Michael Oliver, and Roger Smalley. Peter Dickinson, British composer and pianist, is Emeritus Professor, University of Keele and University of London, and has written or edited several books about twentieth-century music, including Copland Connotations [Boydell Press, 2002] and The Music of Lennox Berkeley [Boydell Press, 2003].
