Tristana : Buñuel's film and Galdós' novel : a case study in the relation between literature and film Colin J. Partridge, Benito Pérez Galdós, C. J. Partridge Edwin Mellen Press; Edwin Mellen Pr, Lewiston [N.Y.], New York State, 1995
Colin Partridge's critical excursus on the novel Tristana and its reception opens with an account of diametrically opposed readings by Galdos' contemporaries, Bazan, the feminist, and the novelist Clarin. Partridge then proceeds to relate the sources of Tristana in Galdos' personal experience, notably his relations with a succession of women. The closing section of Partridge's useful book is a critique of Luis Bunuel's film Tristana (1970), which shows how Bunuel employs cinematic equivalents of Galdos' cinematic narrative devices.

The novel histories og Galdós Urey, Diane Faye;Pérez Galdós, Benito;Episodios nacionales Princeton University Press, Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, 1989
Benito Perez Galdos (1843-1920) occupies a position in Spanish literature surpassed only by Cervantes, and, like him, made a major contribution to the European novel that is now becoming widely recognized. In a semiological approach to the second period of Episodios Nacionales, Diane Urey demonstrates the relevance of these twenty-six novels, the least studied of Galdos's works, to fundamental issues such as the relationship between history and fiction, and between mimesis and creation. Her findings of ambiguity, irony, and allegory in this writer's highly self-conscious historical novels will revise our views of Galdos's place in European letters while offering new insights into a general theory of historical fiction. Diane Urey offers an alternative to referential or ideological interpretations of the Episodios by stressing the indeterminate textuality of historical incidents and the fictionality of historical discourse. Drawing on Derrida, De Man, Foucault, and Hayden White, she applies a wide range of narrative theory to these texts and concludes that novel and history are interchangeable modes of discourse because they rely necessarily on the same narrative strategies. Originally published in 1989. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Misericordia: a novel by Benito Pérez Galdós, edited for college students, with introductions, notes, vocabulary, and questions, by Ángel del Río ... and McKendree Petty New York: Dryden Press, New York, New York State, 1946

Galdos, the Mature Thought (Studies in Romance Languages) Dendle, Brian J., 1936- The University Press of Kentucky, Studies in Romance languages (Lexington, Ky.), 23, Lexington, Kentucky, 1980
<P>The sheer volume of prolific Spanish novelist and playwright Benito Pérez Galdós's literary production has rendered overall assessment of his body of work all but impossible. The later volumes in his ambitious and popular <I>Episodios nacionales</I> series, in particular, have suffered from scholarly indifference.</P><P>In this acclaimed study, Brian J. Dendle closely considers the twenty-six novels in this series written between 1898 and 1912. These <I>episodios</I>, Dendle contests, are artistically superior to the earlier volumes and offer a unique opportunity to establish the ideological profile of the mature Galdós.</P>

Doña Perfecta Translation and introd. by Harriet de Onís Woodbury, N. Y., Barron's Educational Series, inc, Woodbury, N. Y, New York State, 1960
One of the most popular writers in Spain, and perhaps the best known in other countries, is Benito Pérez Galdós. In nearly all his works he has sought to portray some particular phase of Spanish life. Though Galdós is not strictly speaking a "realist," his stories are intensely Spanish, and hence appeal to every foreigner interested in the daily life and doings and in the national customs of the Spanish people. - Introduction.

Electra Benito Pérez Galdós Treditition Classics, Ed. with notes and vocabulary by Otis Gridley Bunnell, Place of publication not published, 2006

Episodios Nacionales: Gerona / Cdiz (Sepan Cuantos, #166) Benito Pérez Galdós Porrúa, Editorial, S.A., Episodios nacionales, núm.

Tradiciones peruanas I Ricardo Palma Linkgua Ediciones, Red Ediciones, Bacelona, 2012

1 online resource (200 pages) "This book explores the change that occurred in the writings of Spanish novelist Benito Perez Galdos when he entered his segunda manera in 1881 with the publication of La desheredada, his first contemporary novel. Critical work on this important phase of Galdos's career has tended to concentrate on the content of his novels, with little attention given to the way in which Galdos conveys that content to the reader. By studying these works in light of how their stories are told, Linda Willem shows that La desheredada marks the beginning of a more sophisticated and varied mode of narrative in Galdos's novels. Through close readings of his first seven contemporary works, Willem shows how the affective response associated with various narrative devices plays a role in the rhetorical strategies of each text."--Provided by publisher Print version record Includes bibliographical references and index Electronic reproduction. The Wisdom of Eccentric Old Men: A Study of Type and Secondary Character in Galdós's Social Novels, 1870-1897 Peter Anthony Bly ACP - McGill Queen's University Press, 1, 2004
The wise fool, the sensible madman, and the village idiot, traditional characters in European literature, are best-known through Don Quixote. Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920), Spain's most important novelist after Cervantes, contributed to this corpus with a number of principal characters whose affinity to Cervantes's hero is clearly recognizable. In "The Wisdom of Eccentric Old Men" Peter Bly demonstrates that a number of Galdós's secondary characters - the eccentric old men who appear with regular frequency in the realist social novels of his most important period of writing, 1876 to1897 - can be classified as a variant or sub-group of this type.

Fortunata y Jacinta de Benito Pérez Galdós de Benito Pérez Galdós; edición de Germán Gullón Madrid: Taurus, Persiles ;, 169., El escritor y la crítica, Persiles., Madrid, Spain, 1986
A novel about a man with "a flexible conscience", the woman he marries, and the woman who is his mistress, married to a poor apothecary. This is a love story with a difference, with a vast stage of very likeable characters, depth of detail and glimpses of Spanish politics in the post-Napoleonic era. It is also a classic of modern Spanish realism, a tragedy lightened with real humour and kindness. A good English translation by Agnes Moncy Gullón is available on the Internet Archive

Conflicts And Conciliations: The Evolution Of Galdos's Fortuna Y Jacinta (purdue Studies In Romance Literatures) Geoffrey Ribbans West Lafayette, Ind.: Purdue University Press, Purdue studies in Romance literatures ;, v. 14, West Lafayette, Ind, Indiana, 1997
Between 1881 And 1897, Benito Perez Galdos, Generally Acknowledged As Spain's Greatest Nineteenth-century Novelist, Composed Some Twenty Contemporary Novels, Which Geoffrey Ribbans Characterizes As The Peak Of His Achievement. This Monumental Study Traces The Evolution Of The Many Strands That Make Up One Of Them: The Long And Complex Novel Fortunata Y Jacinta. Ribbans Examines The Various Stages Of Composition, Not Only The Earlier, Reconstructed Alpha Version But Also Subsequent Revisions In The Much Corrected Handwritten Text As Well As In The Printer's Galleys. He Treats These Tentative Drafts Not In Isolation But As Part Of The Process Of Reaching Out Toward The Coherent Definitive Text. Ribbans's Analysis Of Such Devices As The Ambiguous Role Of The Narrator, The Use Of Free Indirect Style And Direct Dialogue, And The Construction Of Distinctive Ideolects Leads To The Heart Of His Study, The Development Of Galdos's Characters. Among other themes, she investigates the period's changing concepts of the family, women's roles in society, the division of social space into private and public spheres, and attitudes toward conspicuous consumption, sexuality, and mental illness. Aldaraca begins by charting the evolution of women's roles within the family from the Spanish Counter-Revolution, through the Enlightenment, and up to 1900. She then analyzes the personification of the feminine ideal through the literary creation of "the angel of the house" in the novels of the nineteenth-century writer Benito Perez Galdos. In addition to its insights about this ubiquitous nineteenth century figure, this book serves to introduce Anglophone scholars to some of the great literary and ideological questions of nineteenth-century Spanish studies.
