George Inness in Italy [published on the occasion of the exhibition held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 19 February - 15 May 2011 ; Timken Museum of Art, San Diego, 10 June - 18 September 2011 ; Taft Museum of Art, Cincinnati, 7 October 2011-8 January 2012 George Inness; Mark D Mitchell; Judy Dion; Philadelphia Museum of Art.; Timken Museum of Art (San Diego); Taft Museum of Art (Cincinnati) Philadelphia Museum of Art ; in association with Yale University Press, Bulletin (Philadelphia Museum of Art), no. 2, Philadelphia Pa.], New Haven, CT, 2011
A canonical figure in American painting, George Inness (18251894) is widely admired as the pioneer of the landscape aesthetic known as Tonalism, which is distinguished by soft focus and diaphanous layers of paint. This is the first book about the artist's two Italian sojourns (185152 and 187074) and their formative impact on his work. Italyits art and its landscapeoffered Inness a font of inspiration as he developed his unique artistic vision. This handsome book presents ten oil paintings surveying Inness's Italian subjects dating from 1850 to 1879, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art's recently restored Twilight on the Campagna , which has not been on view since 1952. This was the first of Inness's works completed in Italy, and its reemergence offers a unique opportunity to reconsider the career of a leading American artist. The artist's involvement with the city spanned more than 50 years, beginning in 1922, when he was commissioned to execute bas-reliefs for The Barnes Foundation building in nearby Merion, and culminating in 1976, when Lipchitz's monumental sculpture Government of the People was posthumously unveiled near City Hall. During the last three decades of his life, following his move to the United States in 1941, Lipchitz was a frequent visitor to Philadelphia, where he received major commissions for public sculpture, was twice honoured by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and had an important retrospective exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Ar

Studies in European arms and armor : the C. Otto Von Kienbusch collection in the Philadelphia Museum of Art Blair, Claude; Philadelphia Museum of Art Philadelphia Museum of Art : Distributed by University of Pennsylvania Press, University of Pennsylvania Press, Philadelphia, PA, 1992
"This book examines one of the eminent holdings of medieval and Renaissance armor and arms in the United States. Between the years 1982 and 1986, a distinguished group of five internationallly respected scholars of armor and arms conducted research on the collection under the National Endowment for the Arts Visiting Specialists Program. Studies in European Arms and Armor presents and disseminates the results of this research." "Each scholar chose one area within his field of expertise; to write about in detail: three survey cohesive groups of objects within the collection and three concentrate on individual objects of exceptional merit. Varied and original in approach, the essays collectively emphasize the consummate craftsmanship and stylistic development in such areas as goldsmith's work, engraving, embossing, and painting, all integral to the creation of fine arms and armor. The essays present current scholarship on aspects of the collection in a readable and lively style in a substantial contribution to the field." --Book Jacket

The Pennsylvania Germans a celebration of their arts 1683 - 1850 ; an exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Henry Francis Dupont Winterthur Museum ; Philadelphia Museum of Art, October 17, 1982, to January 9, 1983 ; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, March 5, 1983, to May 15, 1983 ; The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, July 2, 1983, to September 3, 1983 ; The Art Institute of Chicago, December 10, 1983, to January 29, 1984 Beatrice B Garvan; Charles F Hummel; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Henry Francis Du Pont Winterthur Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Art Institute of Chicago [Philadelphia]: Philadelphia Museum of Art, [Philadelphia], Pennsylvania, 1982
The seminal idea for this exhibition grew out of a desire to reestablish for a national audience the vitality inherent in the original arts of the Pennsylvania Germans and to explore in-depth the particular contributions that they made to American arts and crafts. The material amassed for this exhibition produced two complementary units, reflected in the title 'The Pennsylvania German," and the subtitle "A Celebration of Their Arts, 1683-1850."The exhibition first provides an overview of the group, the diverse national origins of the settlers, the stability and the productivity of their regional settlements, and their importance in the establishment of the wealth and the international prestige of the colony of Pennsylvania before 1776.Over 300 objects were selected out of some 3,000 examined, which were made and owned by Pennsylvania Germans. In their decoration, inscriptions, and worksmanship, these works reveal the traditions, beliefs, and achievements that this important early settlement group has contributed to American life.

Bruce Nauman : topological gardens : [exhibition, Venice, U.S. Pavilion at the the Giardini de la Biennale, june 7 - Novembre 22, 2009 , Università luav di Venezia at Tolentini, June 7 - Octobre18, 2009 , Venice, Exhibition Spaces at Università Ca'Foscari, June7 - October 18, 2009 Carlos Basualdo; Bruce Nauman; Michael R Taylor; Philadelphia Museum of Art.; Università Iuav di Venezia.; Università degli studi di Venezia Philadelphia: Philadelphia Museum of Art ; New Haven ; Yale University Press, Philadelphia, PA, New Haven, Pennsylvania, 2009
A close study of Bruce Nauman, the representative of the United States at the 53rd Venice Biennale, in the context of the city where the exhibition takes place One of the most complex and fascinating artists working today, Bruce Nauman (b. 1941) has assembled a mesmerizing body of work that encompasses video, installation, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and neon. In 2008, Nauman was unanimously selected to represent the United States at the 53rd Venice Biennale, in an exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The accompanying catalogue explores the interconnections among several specific themes that have recurred prominently throughout four decades of Naumans work. Linking the urban texture of Venice to the topological dimensions of his provocative art, the overarching project allows for an unprecedented occasion for the appreciation and exploration of Naumans undeniable creativity and influence. Bruce Topological Gardens includes texts by Erica Battle and Carlos Basualdo on the organization of the exhibition and the publication, featuring detailed discussions of the works in the show. Michael R. Taylor examines Naumans practice in an art-historical context, and Marco de Michelis explores the notion of space as deployed throughout Naumans oeuvre, with particular reference to the works on view. Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse visions of Arcadia : [published on the occasion of the exhibition "Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse: Visions of Arcadia", Philadelphia Museum of Art, June 20 - September 3, 2012 Joseph J Rishel; Stephanie D'Alessandro; Philadelphia Museum of Art Philadelphia Museum Of Art In Association With Yale University Press, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 2012
The Notion Of A Golden Age Set In An Earthly Paradise Has Long Kindled The Human Imagination. Virgil Envisioned Such A Place Of Bucolic Pleasures - Erotic And Unsullied, Sometimes Shadowed By Blunted Desires And Doubts - In His Eclogues, Set In The Valley Of Arcadia In Ancient Greece. His Poems Defined For Western Art And Literature A Theme That Continues To This Day. Their Resonance As A Foundation For European Painters Around 1900 Is The Subject Of This Beautifully Illustrated Catalogue, Which Focuses On Three Monumental Paintings - Paul Gauguin's Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (1897-98), Paul Cézanne's The Large Bathers (1906), And Henri Matisse's Bathers By A River (1909-10, 1913, And 1916-17). Other Masterpieces By Jean-baptiste-camille Corot, Nicolas Poussin, And Pierre Puvis De Chavannes Establish The High Value Given To Arcadia In The History Of French Painting. These Are Joined By Major Works By Henri Edmond Cross, Robert Delaunay, André Derain, Pablo Picasso, Henri Rousseau, And Paul Signac, As Well As Paintings By Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Franz Marc, And Natalia Goncharova To Suggest The Vitality Of This Subject Outside The Canonical French Definitions. Cézanne : [Paris, Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, September 25, 1995-January 7, 1996 : London, Tate Gallery, February 8-April 28, 1996 : Philadelphia, Philadelphia Museum of Art, May 30-August 18, 1996 Francoise Cachin, Isabelle Cahn, Walter Feilchenfeldt, Andre . Leclerc H.N. Abrams in association with the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Brand: Harry N. Abrams; Harry N. Abrams, New York, New York State, 1996
The Veneration Surrounding The French Painter Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) For Nearly A Century Has, Paradoxically, Contributed To The Mystery Of His Genius. His Work Has Been Extensively Analyzed, But In Fundamental Respects It Remains Incompletely Understood. As Such It Is Ripe For The Reexamination Provided By This Volume, Published On The Centenary Of The Artist's First One-man Exhibition, Which Was Mounted In Paris By Ambroise Vollard. More Than 240 Large Colorplates, Illuminated By Thoughtful Commentaries, And 262 Black-and-white Illustrations Of Paintings, Drawings, Watercolors, And Sketchbook Pages Represent All Aspects Of Cezanne's Oeuvre. The Book Traces The Full Range Of His Stylistic Evolution: Dark And Violent Canvases Of His Early Period, Luminous Works In Which He Came To Grips With Impressionism, And The Paintings Of His Maturity That Broke Entirely New Ground.^ Also Explored Here Is The Artist's Preoccupation With Several Themes And Motifs - Mont Sainte-victoire, Bathers, And Still Lifes. Unprecedented In The Literature On Cezanne Is This Volume's Comprehensive Review Of The Critical Response That The Artist's Work Has Evoked, Both In His Lifetime And Afterward. Francoise Cachin, Director Of The Musees De France, Discusses The Years From 1865 To The Artist's Death In 1906, And Joseph J. Rishel, Curator Of European Painting Before 1900 At The Philadelphia Museum Of Art, Writes On The Years From 1907 To The Present. Their Extensive Quotations From Newspaper Reviews, Monographs, And Journal Articles By Writers From Emile Zola To Meyer Schapiro Offer Readers The Means To Evaluate For Themselves The Many Contradictory Interpretations Of Cezanne's Legacy That Have Been Put Forth Over The Last Century.^ Representing The Latest Scholarship On Cezanne, The Book Provides A Concordance To The Numbering System Of John Rewald's Forthcoming Catalogue Raisonne Of The Paintings. Cezanne Also Includes The Painter's Own Statements About Art And Other Artists, A Fully Documented, Illustrated Chronology By Isabelle Cahn, And An Annotated Glossary Of The Collectors Who Acquired The Work Of Cezanne, Prepared By Walter Feilchenfeldt. Rembrandt And The Face Of Jesus Mark Tucker; Lloyd DeWitt; Seymour Slive; Blaise Ducos; Franziska Gottwald; George Keyes; Shelley Perlove; Larry Silver; Ken Sutherland Philadelphia Museum of Art; Musée du Louvre; Detroit Institue of Arts; In association with Yale University Press; Yale University Press, Philadelphia, PA, Paris, [Detroit, Mich.], [New Haven, Conn.], Pennsylvania, 2011
An intriguing new look at the historical significance of Rembrandt's representations of Christ With the creation of the dramatic Supper at Emmaus (Louvre)and a series of intimate oil sketches of Christ on oak panels, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) overturned the entire history of Christian art. Traditionally, when depicting Christ, artists had relied on rigidly copied prototypes and icons. Among Rembrandt's innovations was his use of a Jewish model to portray a Christ imbued with empathy, gentleness, grace, and faithfulness to nature. Lavishly illustrated, this captivating and important book presents the seven known panels, along with more than 60 paintings, drawings, and prints by Rembrandt and his pupils. Essays by expert contributors offer insights into the production of the panels and their relationship to other works in Rembrandt's oeuvre; how he changed the meaning and status of the canonical image of Christ in northern European art; and much more. Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus is a marvelously intriguing study of how one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age revolutionized an aspect of art history dating to antiquity. Published in association with the Philadelphia Museum of Art Exhibition Muse du Louvre, Paris (04/21/11 07/18/11) Philadelphia Museum of Art (08/03/1110/30/11) Detroit Institute of Arts (11/20/11 02/12/12 )

This new exhibition takes the 2005 painting 'The Eye of Go' as its starting point, and looks at how the circular geometric motif of this painting - part of a way of thinking for Orozco, a way to organise ideas of structure, organisation and perspective - migrates onto other work, recurring in other paintings, sculptures and photographs. A highlight of the exhibition is a series of large geometric works on acetate, made in the mid 1990s, yet never before exhibited. Rather than surveying the whole range of Orozco's practice, the exhibition seeks to cut a conceptual slice through it, to look deeply into the mechanics of the artist's thinking and working process. Not only does the exhibition propose a different view of Orozco's major contribution to changes in art in the 90s but it brings to the fore the urgent problem of art's 'makeability' now.

Kantha : the embroidered quilts of Bengal from the Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz collection and the Stella Kramrisch collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Darielle Mason; Pika Ghosh; Katherine Hacker; Niaz Zaman; Anne Peranteau Philadelphia Museum of Art ; in association with Yale University Press, Philadelphia, PA, New Haven, Pennsylvania, 2009
This first book-length study on kanthas published outside of South Asia focuses on two premier collections, one assembled by the legendary historian of Indian art, Dr. Stella Kramrisch, the other by Jill and Sheldon Bonovitz, leading proponents of self-taught art. Created from worn-out garments imaginatively embroidered by women with motifs and tales drawn from a rich regional repertoire, kanthas traditionally were stitched as gifts for births, weddings, and other family occasions. Innovative essays by leading scholars explore the domestic, ritual, and historical contexts of the fascinating quilts in these collections--made between the mid-19th and mid-20th century in what is today Bangladesh and West Bengal, India--and trace their reinterpretation as emblems of national identity and works of art.
