Coffin Corner Boys : One Bomber, Ten Men, and Their Harrowing Escape From Nazi-Occupied France Carole Engle Avriett; George W. Starks Regnery History, Simon & Schuster, Washington, DC, 2018
**"Gripping...filled with...dramatic escapes, moments of surprising humanity, and acts of bravery." —Publishers Weekly** **A Story of Adventure, Survival, Loyalty, and Brotherhood**Taking off from England on March 16, 1944, young Lt. George Starks and the nine-man crew of his Flying Fortress were assigned to the "coffin corner," the most exposed position in the bomber formation headed for Germany. They never got there. Shot down over Nazi-occupied France, the airmen bailed out one by one, scattered across the countryside. Miraculously, all ten survived, but as they discarded their parachutes in the farmland of Champagne, their wartime odyssey was only beginning.Alone, with a broken foot and a 20mm shell fragment in his thigh, twenty-year-old Starks set out on an incredible 300-mile trek to Switzerland, making his way with the help of ordinary men and women who often put themselves in great danger on his behalf. Six weeks later, on the verge of giving up, Starks found himself in the hands of a heroic member of the French Resistance—he calls him "the bravest man I've ever known"—who got him safely across the heavily guarded border.Similar ordeals awaited the other nine crewmen, who faced injury, betrayal, cap-tivity, hunger, and depression. It was nothing short of miraculous that all ten came home at the end of the war.George Starks emerged from his ordeal with two passions—to stay in touch with his crew whatever the obstacles and to return to France to find and thank the brave souls to whom he owed his life. His enduring loyalty enabled him to do both.

A Dog Named Haku : A Holiday Story From Nepal Amish Karanjit, Nicole Karanjit, Ruth Jeyaveeran, Margarita Engle Lerner Publishing Group, ♫ Read-Along ebook. ♫, 2022
Audisee® eBooks with Audio combine professional narration and sentence highlighting for an engaging read aloud experience! It's the Festival of Lights in Nepal, and today is the day to honor dogs! Brothers Alu and Bhalu wander the streets of Kathmandu, passing by twirling kites and bamboo swings, looking for a dog to feed. But as night falls, their task begins to feel hopeless, until they spot a small black dog who is in need of a friend. This sweet story presents an important Hindu holiday through the eyes of two young boys, making it relatable for both those familiar with the holiday and those reading about it for the first time. "Every year, dogs in Nepal are celebrated on Kukur Tihar, which takes place during a five-day festival of lights. Nepalese dog-owners revere their pets with a red tika on the forehead, a garland of marigolds, and special treats to eat. They pray for the health and safety of their dogs and give thanks for their loyalty and friendship. Here a pair of dejected brothers roam the streets of Kathmandu looking for an unclaimed stray dog to honor, as they have none of their own. Award-winning poet Engle collaborates with Amish and Nicole Karanjit to tell this semifictional, heart-warming story of luck and love. Mixed-media illustrations reveal a bustling Kathmandu emerging from the rubble of a deadly earthquake, vibrant and determined to resume normalcy. Textile patterns layered over paint in the clothing of figures and backgrounds adds a unique cultural element. A happy ending will have readers cheering for the brothers and probably begging for a puppy of their own."-Booklist "In Nepal, the festival Diwali has a special component where stray dogs, or kukur, are honored, and young brothers Alu and Bhalu are particularly determined to find a dog to feed this year given search dogs' important help after the recent Nepalese earthquake. After combing the town they happen on a sad and abandoned puppy, whom they dub 'Haku' and smuggle into the house and up to the rooftop as the night draws in. Drawn by the sound of puppy wooing, the rest of the family, including the boys' little sister, heads up onto the roof, and there, with a backdrop of festival reworks, they include Haku in the celebrations and agree that in the day's tradition of sibling giving, 'all three children should generously give one another one lonely puppy who needed a home.' Engle, working with her daughter and Nepalese son-in-law, creates a spare, lyrical text that eschews the usual explanatory glosses (the name of the tradition, Kukur Tihar, isn't even explicitly mentioned); while non-Nepalese audiences may therefore need some help to contextualize some elements, such as the flower wreaths and red forehead mark on the dog, the result is a bracing absence of pandering that relies on the dog-centered plot and festive details to drive the story on their own. Painterly digital illustrations are occasionally stiff, but there's a pleasing balance between lively pattern and festive details and the purple tones of the evening, and Haku, with his importuning big eyes, is practically irresistible. The result is an engaging introduction to a tradition that a lot of kids would like to join in celebrating and a quick view of a country that doesn't get much attention in youth literature. A glossary, a brief bibliography of children's books about Nepal, and a list of slightly contrived activities is appended."-The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books "Brothers Alu and Bhalu are celebrating Kukur Tihar, a special day to honor dogs during festival time in Nepal. The two young boys search the streets of Kathmandu for a stray dog to feed, remembering the brave search-and-rescue dogs that saved many lives after earthquakes devastated their country in 2015. Multiaward-winner Engle teams up with her daughter, Nicole Karanjit, and son-in-law, Amish Karanjit (who was born and raised in Nepal), to craft this tale based on a true story from ano

Coffin Corner Boys : One Bomber, Ten Men, and Their Harrowing Escape From Nazi-Occupied France Carole Engle Avriett; George W. Starks Regnery Publishing, Incorporated, An Eagle Publishing Company, Simon & Schuster, Washington, DC, 2018
As a young band of brothers flies over German-occupied France, they come under heavy fire. Their B-17 is shot down and the airmen?stumbling through fields and villages?scatter across Europe. Some struggled to flee for safety. Others were captured immediately and imprisoned. Now, for the first time, their incredible story of grit, survival, and reunion is told. In 1944, George Starks was just a nineteen-year-old kid from Florida when he and his high school buddies enlisted in the US military. They wanted to join the action of WWII. George was assigned to the 92nd Bomb Group?in which the median age was 22?and on his crew's first bombing mission together received the most vulnerable spot of a B-17 mission configuration: low squadron, low group, flying #6 in the bomber box formation. Airmen called George's position the "Coffin Corner" because here exposure was most likely to draw hostile fire. Sure enough, George's plane was shot down by a German Fw190, and he jumped at 25,000 feet for the "first and only time," as he tells the story. He landed near Vitry-le-Perthois to begin a 300-mile trek through the dangers of war-torn France towards the freedom of neutral Switzerland. Through waist-deep snow, seering exhaustion, and close encounters with Nazis, George repeated to himself the mantra "just one more day." He battled to keep walking. His comrades were scattered all across Europe and experienced places as formidable as German POW camps and as hospitable as Spain, each crew member always wondering about the fate of the others. After the war, George made two vows: he would never lose touch with his men again and one day would attempt to thank those who had risked their lives to save his. Despite passage of time and demands of career and family, he accomplished both. He reunited with his crew then twenty-five years later returned to France to locate as many of the brave souls who had helped him evade the enemy as he could. Join George as he retraces his steps to freedom and discover the amazing stories of sacrifice and survival and how ten young American boys plus their French Helpers became heroes

Extravagant Love : Exploring God's Passion for Us Carole Engle Avriette Salem Books, Simon & Schuster, [N.p.], 2023
Have you ever been loved with "skimpy love"? Or has your love for someone else seemed to shrivel? Enter the world of God's extravagant love: It is beyond measure. Careful study of God's Word, along with delving into ancient customs and symbols from Biblical times, helps us understand His passionate love for all He has created. If we call someone extravagant , we're usually thinking about his spending habits and luxurious way of life. So to use that word for a homeless man who had only one change of clothes—an itinerant teacher who depended on others for food and shelter—seems a stretch. Yet Jesus was the most extravagant person who ever lived. Carole Engle Avriett invites you to redefine your notion of "extravagant." In this study of ancient customs and ways of life, you'll gain an understanding of the cultural context of the Scriptures and of twelve key characteristics of God's nature, giving you a new appreciation of God's love in all its fullness. You may think you know what love is, but not until you've experienced His extravagant love will you understand what it's like to be loved by a King . . . the unrestrained and lavish God whose passion draws souls into eternity.

In 1965, Col. Thomas “Jerry” Curtis’s helicopter was shot down over North Vietnam. He was immediately captured and spent 7 1/2 years confined in a filthy 5’x7’ cell at the notorious Hanoi prison camp. Thousands of miles from home and unable to communicate with his wife and children, Jerry endured months of solitary confinement, suffocating heat, freezing cold, grueling physical and psychological torture, constant hunger, and unimaginable mental duress. And yet, time and again, the Light that darkness cannot overcome became his beacon of hope. Now, for the first time in print, Jerry shares the full story of his 2,703 days in captivity and what he learned about faith, hope, and the indomitable power of the human spirit.

We feel that to "better" American poetry is to jam dominant systems of taste to the best of our abilities, and to resignify the very phrase "American poetry" with the languages that it so desperately lacks. We intend to center voices of resistance, subjectivities that emerge from the radical margins, artists whose Americanness transcends nationalism and other borders, perspectives historically denied institutional backing--in short, poets and poetries that are urgent and necessary but do not get along nicely with Power. "Bettering American Poetry is an explosive revelation of the arriving generation of American poets-arriving from every part of the landscape, bringing energies, gifts, and ways of seeing and saying of every kind. Plunge into its pages. See/ hear the news of who we are." --Jane Hirshfield, author of The Beauty "This anthology and its squad of editors better American poetry by gathering a diverse formation of poets who inspire us to read across difference, speak against power, and breathe through struggle." --Craig Santos Perez, author of from unincorporated territory [lukao] "Thank you, editors, thank you, authors for utterly rearranging my cells. This is the only anthology with the word "American" I want to be a part of. A series I will return to, giddy. How desperately I needed to experience how big a poem can be - what a gift you've given us - I'm beaming at you, poets - brutal and honey, whiplash and cry." --TC Tolbert, author of Gephyromania and co-editor of Troubling the Line: Trans and Genderqueer Poetry and Poetics "Some anthologies are important. Some are important and necessary. Resistance on every level to what is considered normal and acceptable is both important and necessary. It is the only way to breath. This gathering helps us breathe. We need all the help we can get." --John Yau, author The Wild Children of William Bake and Bijoux in the Dark.
