Bacterial glycomics : current research, technology, and applications
edited by Christopher W. Reid, Susan M. Twine, Anne N. Reid
Norfolk, UK: Caister Academic Press, Caister Academic Press, [N.p.], 2012
Glycomics, the study of glycoconjugate assembly and expression in biological systems, is important in many areas of microbiology. Because glycans play such diverse roles in bacterial physiology, the field of bacterial glycomics is indispensable for the understanding of bacterial pathogenesis, metabolism and cell communities. Progress in bacterial glycomics is advancing rapidly due to improvements in analytical methodologies and the development of new and innovative approaches for glycan isolation, characterization and synthesis. Research in bacterial glycomics could lead to the development of novel drugs, bioactive glycans and glycoconjugate vaccines. Written by a team of acknowledged experts, this book provides an up-to-date overview of our current understanding of bacterial glycomes, describes the main analytical methods in use and discusses recent and novel applications. The book is divided into three sections. The first section includes overviews of microbial glyconjugates, lipopolysaccharide, capsular polysaccharide, lipoarabinomannan biosynthesis, cell wall metabolism, and glycosylation of bacterial and archaeal proteins. The second section reviews the analytical approaches used in the characterization of the bacterial glycome. The final section describes applications of bacterial glycomics, including metabolic oligosaccharide labeling, the synthesis of bioactive glycans and the potential for glycoconjugate vaccines. Essential reading for microbiologists working in polysaccharide and carbohydrate research, the book is also recommended for carbohydrate experts, microbiologists, immunologists and researchers in many other fields of life sciences.

Divinity: Transcendence: Book Two: The Divinity Saga
Reid, Susan
CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Divinity 2, 2013
"I've already died once. For me, dying again-is not an option." Starling Marie Roberts, 3rd tier Divine Warrior. Starling doesn't remember how she died nor does she want to. Thankfully, all personal memories are erased once one becomes a divine warrior. Or are they? As if being late to rise wasn't attention drawing and confusing enough, automatically drawing suspicion in a realm that she had only seen glimpses of in her mortal life, surely didn't help. Quickly befriended by a group of welcoming, fellow warriors was an unexpected relief, but where there are large groups, there are always a few that aren't so enthused about the newcomers. Especially the unique ones who question everything. Being in the spirit realm was a lot to take in. It was both exciting and scary, and even more so...was discovering her essence. As far as being branded, she wouldn't have wished that experience on her worst enemy. Maybe. Though Camael has waited for her, he grows frustrated and impatient as the darkness in him begs to be fed. Camael knows that he and Starling will cross paths again. Realizing that she won't remember him, is the most painful of all. Knowing that she will kill him, is the risk he is willing to take to see her again. It doesn't help that Morning Star has been looking for ways to get even, ever since Cam'ael's battle with Drakael. He blames him for Starlings death. He needed to claim her while she was still mortal, not when she became an immortal force to be reckoned with. However, he still wants her- even more so now than before. A new, deadly demon is roaming the Earth, killing higher level fallen, and Camael is about to become his next target. What is forbidden, creates something that may ultimately bring about the invasion of darkness sooner than expected. What lies in darkness, will always come into the light.

Lyle Creelman : The Frontiers of Global Nursing
Susan E. Armstrong-Reid
Toronto: University of Toronto Press, University of Toronto Press, Toronto, Canada, 2013
This intriguing scholarly biography examines the important contributions of Canada's foremost international nurse, Lyle Creelman. Creelman parlayed her experience as a community health nurse in British Columbia into significant international appointments with two organizations undertaking massive responsibility for health tasks in the post-war period – first, as chief nurse of the British Zone of Occupied Germany with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), and, from 1954 to 1968, the Chief Nursing Officer of the World Health Organization (WHO).In telling Creelman's fascinating story, Susan Armstrong-Reid helps readers learn about the transformation of the nursing profession and global health governance in the twentieth century. This story challenges the prevailing portrait of expatriate nurses during this period as agents of Western cultural imperialism. Lyle Creelman: The Frontiers of Global Nursing not only recasts the broader historical narrative of nursing's legacy to global health, but contextualizes its continuing importance for approaching health care in the twenty-first-century.

Implementing and Working with the Youth Criminal Justice Act Across Canada
Marc Alain; Raymond R. Corrado; Susan Reid
Toronto ; Buffalo ; London: University of Toronto Press, University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 2016
xvii, 365 pages : 24 cm "Since its implementation in 2003, the Youth Criminal Justice Act has been the subject of intense political and scholarly debate. A complicated mixture of provisions intended to provide harsher punishments for serious violent crimes while encouraging positive, non-punitive interventions in less serious cases, its impact on the youth justice system remains controversial. Implementing and Working with the Youth Criminal Justice Act across Canada provides the first comprehensive, province-by-province analysis of how each Canadian jurisdiction has implemented the Act in accordance with its own history, traditions, and institutional arrangements. Drawing on in-depth interviews with probation officers, counselors, educators, and social workers, the contributors use the experiences of practitioners to offer a new analytical perspective on a complicated and contentious aspect of the Canadian justice system. Their conclusions provide vital policy and program information for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers concerned with Canada's youth justice systems."-- Includes bibliographical references List of figures and tables -- Preface -- Contributors. Entrepreneurial Vision: A Guide for Charting and Implementing the Visioning Process (Classroom Companion: Business)
Susan E. Reid, Charles B. Crawford
Springer Nature Switzerland AG, Classroom Companion: Business, 1st edition 2022, Cham, 2022
While many texts on entrepreneurship and biographies of great entrepreneurs and leaders talk about vision and its importance, few delve into what vision is, how it comes to be, and, how it can be more successfully developed. This book, built on evidence-based research, delves into the entire entrepreneurial visioning process. Starting with understanding the elements which characterize strong and sustainable vision, the authors detail proposed steps, supported by examples and worksheets, that students and entrepreneurs can take to build and implement their vision and, in turn, help put them on the path to build great businesses.

Pleasures in Socialism : Leisure and Luxury in the Eastern Bloc
edited and with an introduction by David Crowley and Susan E. Reid
Northwestern University Press, Chicago Distribution Center (CDC Presses), Evanston, Ill, 2010
Much has been written about the workings of communist governments in the USSR and the Soviet bloc, yet there is still a great deal to explore regarding their relationship to the everyday lives of the citizens living under them. This third volume builds on the editors’ Style and Socialism and Socialist Spaces, showing how the rise of consumer culture took a unique form in these countries. Essays from top scholars address topics ranging from fashion and game shows to smoking and camping. The authors of the essays in this collection investigate the ways in which pleasurable activities, like many other facets of daily life, were both a space in which these communist governments tried to insinuate themselves and thereby further expand the reach of their authority, and also an opportunity for people to assert their individuality.

Style and socialism : modernity and material culture in post-war Eastern Europe
edited by Susan E. Reid and David Crowley
Berg Publishers, Oxford, New York, England, 2000
This book explores the material and visual world of the socialist Bloc from the late 1940s to the late 1960s. The essays, by authors from a range of disciplines, examine the forms and uses of material objects that made up the environment of life behind the 'Iron Curtain', and investigates the particular ways in which these objects came to represent the often divergent aspirations of regimes and peoples in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
The two decades after the end of the Second World War considered here constitute two contrasting periods: that of post-war Stalinism and the 'sovietization' or 'stalinization' of Eastern Europe; and, from the mid-1950s, the period of destalinization and relative cultural liberalization known as the Thaw. During the Thaw, consumerism and a moderate fashion consciousness began to be tolerated or even encouraged to varying degrees in different parts of the Bloc. Style, regarded as a suspect notion under Stalin, became a legitimate and even urgent issue. What forms of dress, home furnishings and housing, as well as of fine art, would provide a stimulating environment that could meet the physical and ideological needs of -- and give shape to -- modern, socialist life? Challenging the assumption that all cultural norms were generated and effectively imposed by Moscow, essays in this anthology investigate the interactions and exchanges between the countries of the Eastern Bloc and and ask how, even in socialist economies, the consumption of material objects -- or the refusal to consume -- could project personal and collective identities and even articulate resistance.

Anyone who seeks to understand the effects of state socialism on life in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, or who is interested in the intersection of politics with art, design and material culture will find this book absorbing and illuminating.

Developments in Infant Observation : The Tavistock Model
Susan Reid; Tavistock Clinic
East Sussex [England] ; New York, New York: Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Hoboken, 2013
Infant observation carried out within the family is a compelling approach to the study of early human development, vividly revealing the impact of intergenerational patterns of child-rearing and the complex relationship between nature and nurture. It provides unique insights into the early origins of emotional disturbance and suggests ways in which healthy development can be promoted by both professional and parent, often resulting in changes to clinical practice. Developments in Infant Observation: The Tavistock Model is a collection of twelve key papers from international contributors. It offers an overview of current practice, explores the new concepts that have arisen from direct observation, and shows how the findings from observation are being applied in the research setting. An essential text for child psychotherapists in training and practice, this is a book that brings alive the academic theories of child development through thought-provoking and stimulating case-studies which will be of interest to any professional working with children.

Socialist spaces : sites of everyday life in the Eastern Bloc
Crowley, David (editor);Reid, Susan E. (editor)
Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, November 1, 2002
"What were Socialist Spaces? The Eastern Bloc produced distinctive spaces, some of which were fashioned from ideological templates, such as the monumental parade grounds and Red Squares where communist leaders could receive tributes, or new factory cities with towering chimneys and glittering palaces of culture. But what of the grimy toilet in the communal apartment or the forlorn ruins left after the Second World War?This book explores the representation, meanings and uses of space in the socialist countries of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union between 1947 and 1991. The essays - written from different disciplinary perspectives - investigate the extent to which actual spaces conformed to the dominant political order in the region. Should, for instance, the creation of private spaces, such as the Russian dacha and the Czech chata, be understood as acts of appropriation in which lives were fashioned against the collective or, alternatively, as 'gifts' given by the State in return for quiescence? Whilst monuments and public spaces were designed to relay official ideology, one of the most notable features of the events that marked the end of the Bloc was the way that they became sites of dissent. Examining the myriad ways in which space was used and conceived within socialist society, this book makes an essential contribution to Eastern European and Soviet Studies and provides significant new angles on the factors that underpinned socialism's eventual downfall."-- Provided by publisher

Mrs Dalloway and to the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf (New Casebooks, 121)
edited by Su Reid
SU REID, 1993, PT, 1993
Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse have often been described as 'poetic' and 'difficult'. Some explore the novels' debates about England in the 1920s: about power and imperialism and the War, about contemporary ideas of personal identity, and about women's lives. All demonstrate that new critical methods lead to active engagement with the texts. The ten essays in this book show how attentive readers can follow their stories and relate them directly to the \"real\" world. Some work out \"who speaks\". D.H. Lawrence, Music and Modernism (Palgrave Studies in Music and Literature)
Susan Reid
Springer International Publishing :Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Palgrave Studies in Music and Literature, Palgrave Studies in Music and Literature, 1, 2019
This first book-length study of D. H. Lawrence’s lifelong engagement with music surveys his extensive musical interests and how these permeate his writing, while also situating Lawrence within a growing body of work on music and modernism. A twin focus considers the music that shaped Lawrence’s novels and poetry, as well as contemporary developments in music that parallel his quest for new forms of expression. Comparisons are made with the music of Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Wagner, and British composers, including Bax, Holst and Vaughan Williams, and with the musical writings of Forster, Hardy, Hueffer (Ford), Nietzsche and Pound. Above all, by exploring Lawrence and music in historical context, this study aims to open up new areas for study and a place for Lawrence within the field of music and modernism.

Susan E. Reid, Charles B. Crawford
Springer International Publishing AG, Classroom companion, Cham, Switzerland, 2022

Katherine Mansfield and Continental Europe
da Sousa Correa, Delia; Kimber, Gerri; Reid, Susan
Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh University Press, [N.p.], 2009
New scholarly assessments of Katherine Mansfield's relationships with Continental Europe and the European reception of her workThe inaugural volume of Katherine Mansfield Studies illuminates Mansfield's literary and personal relationships with Continental Europe. The essays explore Mansfield's absorption of French literature and thought, highlighting affinities with Henri Bergson's interpretations of consciousness and with the writings of Marcel Proust. There are important insights into the memorable letters written by Mansfield whilst trapped in Paris under German Bombardment in 1918. Beyond France, we are offered an intriguing view of Mansfield's literary and critical afterlife in Czechoslovakia, and of the cosmopolitanism that characterised her entire life and writing. Also in this volume - appearing in the wake of the publication of the final volume of her collected letters - Mansfield's own practice as a reviewer is explored as a counter-balance to her current critical reception. With a preface by a distinguished editor and scholar of Mansfield and a rich creative writing section that includes work by several eminent New Zealand writers

Violence And Indigenous Communities: Confronting The Past And Engaging The Present (critical Insurgencies)
Susan Sleeper-Smith (editor), Jeff Ostler (editor), Joshua L. Reid (editor)
Northwestern University Press, Critical insurgencies, Evanston, Illinois, 2021
In contrast to past studies that focus narrowly on war and massacre, treat Native peoples as victims, and consign violence safely to the past, this interdisciplinary collection of essays opens up important new perspectives. While recognizing the long history of genocidal violence against Indigenous peoples, the contributors emphasize the agency of individuals and communities in genocide’s aftermath and provide historical and contemporary examples of activism, resistance, identity formation, historical memory, resilience, and healing. The collection also expands the scope of violence by examining the eyewitness testimony of women and children who survived violence, the role of Indigenous self-determination and governance in inciting violence against women, and settler colonialism’s promotion of cultural erasure and environmental destruction. By including contributions on Indigenous peoples in the United States, Canada, the Pacific, Greenland, Sápmi, and Latin America, the volume breaks down nation-state and European imperial boundaries to show the value of global Indigenous frameworks. Connecting the past to the present, this book confronts violence as an ongoing problem and identifies projects that mitigate and push back against it.

lgli/Susan Mary Grant - Themes of the American Civil War (2000, Longman Publishing).pdf
Themes Of The American Civil War: The War Between The States American Civil War
edited by Susan-Mary Grant and Brian Holden Reid
Longman Publishing, 1st, 2000
Themes of the American Civil War offers a timely and useful guide to this vast topic for a new generation of students. The volume provides a broad-ranging assessment of the causes, complexities, and consequences of America's most destructive conflict to date. The essays, written by top scholars in the field, and reworked for this new edition, explore how, and in what ways, differing interpretations of the war have arisen, and explains clearly why the American Civil War remains a subject of enduring interest. It includes chapters covering four broad areas, including The Political Front, The Military Front, The Race Front, and The Ideological Front. Additions to the second edition include a new introduction – added to the current introduction by James McPherson – a chapter on gender, as well as information on the remembrance of the war (historical memory). The addition of several maps, a timeline, and an appendix listing further reading, battlefield statistics, and battle/regiment/general names focuses the book squarely at undergraduates in both the US and abroad.

Edinburgh University Press, Katherine Mansfield studies, vol. 1, Edinburgh, 2009
## New scholarly assessments of Katherine Mansfield's relationships with Continental Europe and the European reception of her work The inaugural volume of __Katherine Mansfield Studies__ illuminates Mansfield’s literary and personal relationships with Continental Europe. The essays explore Mansfield’s absorption of French literature and thought, highlighting affinities with Henri Bergson’s interpretations of consciousness and with the writings of Marcel Proust. There are important insights into the memorable letters written by Mansfield whilst trapped in Paris under German Bombardment in 1918. Beyond France, we are offered an intriguing view of Mansfield’s literary and critical afterlife in Czechoslovakia, and of the cosmopolitanism that characterised her entire life and writing. Also in this volume – appearing in the wake of the publication of the final volume of her collected letters – Mansfield’s own practice as a reviewer is explored as a counter-balance to her current critical reception. With a preface by a distinguished editor and scholar of Mansfield and a rich creative writing section that includes work by several eminent New Zealand writers.

Autism and Personality : Findings From the Tavistock Autism Workshop
Alvarez, Anne (Editor) & Reid, Susan (Editor)
Routledge, 1, 1999-08-03
Taking a psychoanalytic and developmental approach, __Autism and Personality__ outlines in considerable detail the new developments in therapeutic techniques used by the Tavistock Autism Team and Workshop to treat autistic children. It also underlines the importance of support for parents and siblings, who are all too often ignored under considerable stress. The book presents fresh ideas about the importance of personality for the developmental course of the condition, and the implications for psychotherapeutic technique. Using case vignettes to illustrate the theoretical ideas emerging from the Workshop, coupled with case studies which highlight the patient's changing contact with the therapist, it gives a fascinating picture of the individuality of each child and of the sensitivity and skill required for each treatment. Accessible to professionals and also to parents, __Autism and Personality__ is a valuable insight into the nature and course of this condition and its treatment.
