Hornchurch Scramble. Vol. 1 : the defenitive account of the RAF fighter airfield, its pilots, groundcrew and staff Richard C. Smith, Richard Smith, Richard C. Smith Grub Street the Basement, London, England, 2000

When the German raids on London and the South-East arrived from across the Channel in 1915, Sutton's Farm was established as one of the first Home Defence airfields to counter this threat. In the 1930s, now known as RAF Hornchurch, the airfield and personnel were in the forefront of many new aviation technology firsts. But it was in both the Dunkirk evacuation and the Battle of Britain that Hornchurch achieved its most lasting fame, with its squadrons taking on, and beating, the German fighter escorts to its lethal bombers. After seven years of research, interviewing commanders, pilots and ground crews, Richard Smith has produced their definitive history with many first-hand accounts.

MODERN LANGUAGE TEACHING Anthony P R Howatt; Anthony Howatt; Richard C Smith; Richard Smith Routledge, 2023
This volume forms part of a five volume set charting the progress of the nineteenth century movement, which was instrumental in establishing international guidelines for the teaching of modern languages. It was during this period that for the first time, co-operation between phoneticians and teachers culminated in the publication of works that were instrumental in establishing the 'applied linguistic' approach to language teaching in the twentieth century. For the first time, too, the new science of psychology influenced a scientific theory of second language acquisition. The Reform Movement attracted support across Europe, spurring the development of new professional associations and journals. In turn, the publication in these journals of reports of innovative practice contributed to a greater sense of autonomy and professionalism among modern language teachers, who had hitherto tended to live under the shadow of classical language teaching. The practical innovations and theoretical suggestions for the foreign language teaching, although rooted in the nineteenth century, still have relevance today.

Scriptural Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith Joseph Smith; selected and arranged by Joseph Fielding Smith; scriptural annotations and introduction by Richard C. Galbraith Deseret Book Company, Salt Lake City, 2017
In 1938, Joseph Fielding Smith and his assistants in the Church Historian's Office produced __Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith,__ a valuable collection of the sermons and writings of the Prophet Joseph. The revealed truths contained in that volume have blessed the lives of countless Church members. In 1976, Dr. Robert J. Matthews of Brigham Young University greatly added to the usefulness of __Teachings__ by expanding its subject index. __Scriptural Teachings__ of the Prophet Joseph Smith builds on the solid foundation provided by these two editors.

With only their aid and his good sword-arm, Bran Mak Morn, King of the Picts, must battle against the cunning of a sorceress, a mage and the might of the Roman Empire. But will that be enough...?

Yosemite and Sequoia : A Century of California National Parks Richard J. Orsi (editor); Alfred Runte (editor); Marlene Smith-Baranzini (editor) University of California Press, "Introduction and first seven essays ... originally published in California History 69, no. 2 (Summer 1990)", reprint 2020, Berkeley, CA, 2020
A century and a quarter ago, the national park idea was born when Abraham Lincoln signed legislation setting aside Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias "for public use, resort, and recreation inalienable for all time." Over the next decade, the Yosemite park commissioners had to fight private land claims to the valley. By 1890, however, a public park system was firmly established in California when the Yosemite high country and much of what is now Sequoia and King's Canyon National Parks were set aside as federally protected, public preserves. This collection of essays and photographs, originally published as a special issue of California History, documents the creation and management of California's first three national parks. As the essays remind us, the issues of park development so hotly debated today were raised first in Yosemite nearly a century ago. Yosemite's significance in landscape art, its role in the development of western tourism, and its promotion as one of the great icons of American culture are among the other major themes discussed here.

Al Deere : wartime fighter pilot, peacetime commander : the authorised biography RICHARD C. SMITH, Richard Smith Grub Street Publishing, 1st Edition, First Edition, PS, 2003

After having joined the RAF in 1937, New Zealander Al Deere was in the thick of action right from the start of the war, serving with great distinction over France and Dunkirk in May and June of 1940 against the dreaded Messerschmitts. After surviving a crashlanding during a headon attack he helped defend London and the southeast during the Battle of Britain effecting numerous escapes in tight combat situations. He went on, variously, to command a flight in 602 Squadron, to lecture in America, to command RAF Kenley, Biggin Hill and then to lead the 145 French Wing in France before becoming Wing Commander, Plans with 84 Group. Postwar saw him take up many more significant postings including commander of North Weald, and Aide de Camp to HM the Queen. If it could be said that he 'had a good war', he enjoyed an even better peace.Richard Smith has had the full cooperation of family, friends and colleagues in researching the source material to write the biography of this fascinating and exceptional man. The book also includes many of Deere's letters and papers on the tactics and strategy of combat, and his hitherto unpublished story entitled 'Escape'.With a 20page section of photographs, and appendices and original documentary material, every enthusiast of military aviation will welcome this addition to their library.Richard C Smith's previous works include the highly rated Hornchurch Scramble and Hornchurch Eagles.

Wilmot-Smith on Construction Contracts Richard Wilmot-Smith QC; Richard Wilmot-Smith OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2014
The third edition of Wilmot-Smith on Construction Contracts continues to take a clear and practical approach to the law and practice relating to construction contracts in the UK. It provides comprehensive coverage of the substantive law and modern dispute resolution procedures in the field of construction and gives clear guidance when seeking diffiuclt answers. Throughout the work the author provides key practical tips including: where and when you issue proceedings; what the judges will expect and their preferences; and how trials can be made shorter. A separate section also examines enforcement of adjudicator's awards, covering recent case law on this area. This is carefully examined and digested in detail to ensure the reader has an understanding of the pitfalls of enforcement. Richard Wilmot-Smith QC continues to provide an essential source of reference on this area of the law. His modern and practical approach is prevalent throughout this book and has helped to establish it as a key resource for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

The Presidential Expectations Gap : Public Attitudes Concerning the Presidency Richard Waterman, Carol L. Silva, Hank Jenkins-Smith, Prof. Richard Waterman Ann Arbor: The University of Michigan Press, University of Michigan Press, Ann Arbor, 2014
Today, all presidents confront an expectations gap—the difference between what the public expects them to accomplish and what is actually possible | For decades, public expectations of U.S. presidents have become increasingly excessive and unreasonable. Despite much anecdotal evidence, few scholars have attempted to test the expectations gap thesis empirically. This is the first systematic study to prove the existence of the expectations gap and to identify the factors that contribute to the public's disappointment in a given president. Using data from five original surveys, the authors confirm that the expectations gap is manifest in public opinion. It leads to lower approval ratings, lowers the chance that a president will be reelected, and even contributes to the success of the political party that does not hold the White House in congressional midterm elections. This study provides important insights not only on the American presidency and public opinion, but also on citizens' trust in government.

The Song-Yuan-Ming Transition in Chinese History (Harvard East Asian Monographs) Paul Jakov Smith; Richard von Glahn; Christine J. Loomis; Peter K. Bol Harvard University Asia Center : Distributed by Harvard University Press, Brill Academic Publishers, [Place of publication not identified], 2020
This volume seeks to study the connections between two well-studied epochs in Chinese history: the mid-imperial era of the Tang and Song (ca. 800-1270) and the late imperial era of the late Ming and Qing (1550-1900). Both eras are seen as periods of explosive change, particularly in economic activity, characterized by the emergence of new forms of social organization and a dramatic expansion in knowledge and culture. The task of establishing links between these two periods has been impeded by a lack of knowledge of the intervening Mongol Yuan dynasty (1271-1368). This historiographical'black hole'has artificially interrupted the narrative of Chinese history and bifurcated it into two distinct epochs. This book aims to restore continuity to that historical narrative by filling the gap between mid-imperial and late imperial China. The contributors argue that the Song-Yuan-Ming transition (early twelfth through the late fifteenth century) constitutes a distinct historical period of transition and not one of interruption and devolution. They trace this transition by investigating such subjects as contemporary impressions of the period, the role of the Mongols in intellectual life, the economy of Jiangnan, urban growth, neo-Confucianism and local society, commercial publishing, comic drama, and medical learning.

Though not blind to Abraham Lincoln's imperfections, Black Americans long ago laid a heartfelt claim to his legacy. At the same time, they have consciously reshaped the sixteenth president's image for their own social and political ends. Frederick Hord and Matthew D. Norman's anthology explores the complex nature of views on Lincoln through the writings and thought of Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Mary McLeod Bethune, Thurgood Marshall, Malcolm X, Gwendolyn Brooks, Barbara Jeanne Fields, Barack Obama, and dozens of others. The selections move from speeches to letters to book excerpts, mapping the changing contours of the bond—emotional and intellectual—between Lincoln and Black Americans over the span of one hundred and fifty years. A comprehensive and valuable reader, Knowing Him by Heart examines Lincoln's still-evolving place in Black American thought. |Introduction Frederick Douglass, Emancipation Day Address at Poughkeepsie, New York, August 2, 1858 Frederick Douglass, "The Chicago Nominations," June, 1860 H.
