Creative destruction : why companies that are built to last underperform the market, and how to successfully transform them Richard Foster, Sarah Kaplan, Richard N. Foster Currency; Currency/Doubleday, 1st ed, New York, 2001
Turning conventional wisdom on its head, a Senior Partner and an Innovation Specialist from McKinsey & Company debunk the myth that high-octane, built-to-last companies can continue to excel year after year and reveal the dynamic strategies of discontinuity and creative destruction these corporations must adopt in order to maintain excellence and remain competitive. In striking contrast to such bibles of business literature as In Search of Excellence and Built to Last , Richard N. Foster and Sarah Kaplan draw on research they conducted at McKinsey & Company of more than one thousand corporations in fifteen industries over a thirty-six-year period. The industries they examined included old-economy industries such as pulp and paper and chemicals, and new-economy industries like semiconductors and software. Using this enormous fact base, Foster and Kaplan show that even the best-run and most widely admired companies included in their sample are unable to sustain their market-beating levels of performance for more than ten to fifteen years. Foster and Kaplan's long-term studies of corporate birth, survival, and death in America show that the corporate equivalent of El Dorado, the golden company that continually outperforms the market, has never existed. It is a myth. Corporations operate with management philosophies based on the assumption of continuity; as a result, in the long term, they cannot change or create value at the pace and scale of the markets. Their control processes, the very processes that enable them to survive over the long haul, deaden them to the vital and constant need for change. Proposing a radical new business paradigm, Foster and Kaplan argue that redesigning the corporation to change at the pace and scale of the capital markets rather than merely operate well will require more than simple adjustments. They explain how companies like Johnson and Johnson , Enron, Corning, and GE are overcoming cultural "lock-in" by transforming rather than incrementally improving their companies. They are doing this by creating new businesses, selling off or closing down businesses or divisions whose growth is slowing down, as well as abandoning outdated, ingrown structures and rules and adopting new decision-making processes, control systems, and mental models. Corporations, they argue, must learn to be as dynamic and responsive as the market itself if they are to sustain superior returns and thrive over the long term. In a book that is sure to shake the business world to its foundations, Creative Destruction , like Re-Engineering the Corporation before it, offers a new paradigm that will change the way we think about business.

Invisible Wealth : The Hidden Story of How Markets Work Arnold S Kling; Nick Schulz Encounter Books : Made available through hoopla, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), New York, 2011
The discipline of economics is not what it used to be. Over the last few decades, economists have begun a revolutionary reorientation in how we look at the world, and this has major implications for politics, policy, and our everyday lives. For years, conventional economists told us an incomplete story that leaned on the comfortable precision of mathematical abstraction and ignored the complexity of the real world with all of its uncertainties, unknowns, and ongoing evolution. What economists left out of the story were the positive forces of creativity, innovation, and advancing technology that propel economies forward. Economists did not describe the dynamic process that leads to new pharmaceuticals, cell phones, Web-based information services—forces that fundamentally alter how we live our daily lives. Economists also left out the negative forces that can hold economies back: bad governance, counterproductive social practices, and patterns of taking wealth instead of creating it. They took for granted secure property rights, honest public servants, and the willingness of individuals to experiment and adapt to novelty. From Poverty to Prosperity is not Tipping Point or Freakonomics. Those books offer a smorgasbord of fascinating findings in economics and sociology, but the findings are only loosely related. From Poverty to Prosperity on the other hand, tells a big picture story about the huge differences in the standard of living across time and across borders. It is a story that draws on research from the world's most important economists and eschews the conventional wisdom for a new, more inclusive, vision of the world and how it works.

Troubled transplants : unconventional strategies for helping disturbed foster and adoptive children Richard J. Delaney Ph.D., Frank R. Kunstal Ed.D. Wood 'N Barnes Publishing & Distribution, 2nd Rep edition, February 1, 2000
x, 169 pages : 23 cm Caring for troubled adoptive/foster care children can be both harrowing and heroic. Many of today's foster and adopted children come from backgrounds where they experience not only the loss of previous caregivers, but have also suffered from abuse, sexual exploitation, or neglect. Individuals who invite these children into their homes often find themselves in a therapeutic role that can tax and exhaust. Troubled Transplants focuses on these children, their backgrounds, and their deleterious impact on the interaction and environment with the foster or adoptive family. The authors provide suggestions about behavioral roots and practical strategies to address and improve these issues Includes bibliographical references (pages 159-164) and index

Alan Dean Foster The Moment of the Magician Warner Books, Warner books, 32326-8, Warner Books ed, New York, 1985, c1984
In his continuing quest to find his way back to his own world, Jon-Tom the spellsinger must face off against a magician with sinister intentionsFar to the south of the peaceful Bellwoods, where Jon-Tom the spellsinger continues trying to master the art of turning music into magic, a sinister force has awakened: a magician with great ambition and unheard-of power. He summons lightning to do his bidding, commands an army of faceless flying demons, and claims to come from another world—one Jon-Tom suspects might be his own. If he can somehow reason with the unknown magician, perhaps they can combine their talents and find a way to go home together. Wary of this new wickedness, Jon-Tom’s suspicious mentor sends the spellsinger and his companions on a journey to the southlands, assuring him that the land they are to visit is “tropical, friendly, and largely uninhabited.” As Jon-Tom learns all too often, in this mysterious world much will be proven catastrophically wrong.**

The real Bettie Page : the truth about the queen of the pin-ups Foster, Richard., Richard Foster Citadel Press, Kensington Publishing Corp, Twentieth anniversary edition, New York, 2019
"Scrupulously researched . . . An eloquent fan, Foster brings insight into Page's recent revival as a sex symbol." — Entertainment Weekly TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY EDITION UPDATED BY THE AUTHOR WITH A NEW EPILOGUE She has been called the most photographed model in history. From her modest beginnings in Nashville to her legacy as a cult figure, here is the true story of America's iconic pinup queen, legendary Playboy centerfold Bettie Page—including her stormy marriages, her trial for attempted murder, and her decade-long isolation in a California mental institution. During the 1950s, Bettie set hearts ablaze with her killer curves and girl-next-door smile. Yet at the height of her popularity, with a promising acting career before her, she walked away. For more than thirty years, Bettie stayed hidden from the public eye, though she lived on in her fans' memories, much like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. Journalist Richard Foster became the first reporter to contact Page during her long absence, and the first to tell her full story. Using interviews with those who knew her, and filled with uncommon knowledge and insights, The Real Bettie Page reveals both the fun flirt and fashion-forward counter-culture icon whose style continues to inspire today, as well as the intriguing and complex, flesh-and-blood woman behind her smiling photos. Includes classic and rare color and black-and-white photos

Fostering Changes addresses the following What is attachment? Who are attachment-disordered foster children? What can be done to help them? Fostering Changes is a practical book for those who care for, treat, and live with emotionally disturbed foster children...often the victims of phsyical abuse, neglect, sexual exploitation and abandonment. Though these young victims can be removed from the source of abuse and neglect, they take with them the invisible, internal scars of early maltreatment. These scars are often seen in attachment disorders - the vestiges of early disruption. This book provides optimistic, yet realistic, guidelines for intervention with disturbed foster children. It outlines a hopeful course of treatment for Fostering Changes.

Richard Serra (October Files) edited by Hal Foster with Gordon Hughes; essays by Benjamin H.D. Buchloh ... [et al.] The MIT Press, October files, Cambridge, Mass, Massachusetts, 2000
Richard Serra is considered by many to be the most important sculptor of the postwar period. The essays in this volume cover the complete span of Serra's work to date -- from his first experiments with materials and processes through his early films and site works to his current series of "torqued ellipses." There is a special emphasis on those moments when Serra extended aesthetic convention and/or challenged political authority, as in the famous struggle with the General Services Administration over the site-specific piece Tilted Arc.October Files October Files is a new series of inexpensive paperback books. Each book will address a body of work by an artist of the postwar period who has altered our understanding of art in significant ways and prompted a critical literature that is sophisticated and sustained. Each book will trace not only the development of an important oeuvre but also the construction of the critical discourse inspired by it. The series editors are Hal Foster, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Annette Michelson, Yve-Alain Bois, and Rosalind Krauss.

The Demon Queen Lewis, Richard Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2008
The final assault on Longview was going to do more than just destroy the town -- it was going to rip open the world. In the blackness surrounding the town he thought he could see Rangda's enormous maw, open and hungry, ready to devour. Jesse is a boy with a mysterious past. In and out of foster homes his whole life, he believes he was abandoned in Los Angeles as a baby. When he comes under the scrutiny of Homeland Security in an incident involving a mistaken identity, he starts learning some unsettling facts about himself. Now he is living with the Mindells in a small Midwestern town, and for the first time he feels like he may have a real home -- until Honor Clarke shows up. Ever since Honor and her mother moved back to town following the gruesome death of Honor's father, strange things have been happening. Someone is murdering birds and painting odd symbols all over town, and Jesse feels as if he's losing his mind. He starts to see a man no one else can see, he is having violent nightmares, and it all seems to be leading to one conclusion -- he is here for only one reason: to fight the evil that is Rangda, the Demon Queen, and her loyal follower, Honor Clarke, no matter the consequences. Richard Lewis brings Indonesian mythology and legend to the present day in this chilling novel of unimaginable horror.

Jeanne Foster challenged the accepted role for women at the turn of the twentieth century. Born on a hardscrabble farm in the Adirondack Mountains in 1879, she was hailed as an important voice in American poetry by 1916 when her first books of verse, Neighbors of Yesterday and Wild Apples were published. She had early success as a modelshe was the Harrison Fisher girl of 1903and later became a journalist for the American Review of Reviews. In 1918, she met John Quinn, patron of the arts, which placed her in the middle of some of the most important literary and artistic movements in the twentieth century. She counted among her friends John Butler and William Butler Yeats, Ezra Pound, James Joyce, Ford Madox Ford, Pablo Picasso, and Constantin Brancusi. This book reveals her dark affair with Aleister Crowley and her great friendship with Tomas Masaryk of Czechoslovakia. Today, Jeanne Foster lies buried in Chestertown, New York, next to her old friend John Butler Yeats.

Simpler Living, Compassionate Life : A Christian Perspective Michael Schut; Bill McKibben; Henri Nouwen; Richard Foster; Cecile Andrews Church Publishing, Incorporated, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 2), Newburyport, 2009
**Essays on the spiritual power of an uncluttered life from Henri Nouwen, Richard J. Foster, Juliet Schor, and others, with an introduction by Bill McKibben.** Every day we are bombarded with messages that imply we need more: more money, more clothes, more food, more cars, more everything. But despite technological advances, proliferation of resources, and a general increase in what the average person has, our happiness has not grown at the same rate as our stash of stuff. Perhaps the key to a good life isn't found in quantity but in quality—and in a simple, honest approach to existence. In __Simpler Compassionate Living__, Michael Schut brings together brilliant essays on the topic of modest lifestyles from twenty-three luminaries, including Terry Tempest Williams, Cecile Andrews, Wendell Berry, and Evy McDonald . Delving into topics such as time as a commodity, money in modern society, international economics, social and environmental responsibility, and the ever-widening global community, these compositions present a framework for examining and reforming how we view our place in a world obsessed with commerce and consumerism. With a study guide and an appendix of further resources for those who want to take steps to change their lifestyle, __Simpler Compassionate Living__ is a comprehensive look at how to step outside of the madness of materialism and rediscover the peace and fulfillment within—replacing the fleeting rush of acquisitiveness with a genuinely sustainable joy. __Also includes essays by: Shantilal Bhagat, Frederick Buechner, John B. Cobb, Jr., Michael Schut, Alan Durning, James T. Mulligan, William Gibson, Gerald May, Timothy Weiskel, Calvin DeWitt, Duane Elgin, Philip Sherrard, William Stringfellow, Jerome Segal, David Shi__
