Terrorism: Commentary on Security Documents Volume 148 : Lone Wolf Terrorists Jr. Douglas C. Lovelace (editor) Oceana Publications, Oceana. Oxford University Press, Oxford University Press USA, New York, NY, 2018
Terrorism: Commentary on Security Documents is a series that provides primary source documents and expert commentary on various topics relating to the worldwide effort to combat terrorism, as well as efforts by the United States and other nations to protect their national security interests. Volume 148, Lone Wolf Terrorists , examines the phenomenon of the solitary domestic terrorist, analyzes the distinction between such terrorists and mass murderers who are not deemed to be terrorists, considers the motivations of violent extremists, and examines the dilemmas faced by law enforcement in preventing solitary political extremists with violent ideologies from translating their beliefs into actions. The volume is divided into three sections, providing an overview of the topic, an examination of strategies for prevention of such attacks, and a consideration of the Internet's role in contributing to radicalization. Documents included in this volume include a CRS report on domestic terrorism, a report examining violent radicalization from a criminal justice perspective, and a CRS report differentiating hate crimes from domestic terrorism, as well as other reports on the lone wolf terrorism phenomenon and strategies to prevent and/or counter it. The last document in the volume is a CRS report relating to the advocacy of terrorism on the Internet, especially including social media, and the ways in which law enforcement might be able to address the problem of dangerous online speech within the current U.S. legal structure. ** Cover 1 Terrorism 4 Copyright 5 Table of Contents 6 Introduction 8 A. __Terrorism: Commentary on Security Documents__ is a series that provides primary source documents and expert commentary on various topics relating to the worldwide effort to combat terrorism, as well as efforts by the United States and other nations to protect their national security interests. Volume 141, __Hybrid Warfare and the Gray Zone Threat__, considers the mutation of the international security environment brought on by decades of unrivaled U.S. conventional military power. The term "hybrid warfare" encompasses conventional warfare, irregular warfare, cyberwarfare, insurgency, criminality, economic blackmail, ethnic warfare, "lawfare", and the application of low-cost but effective technologies to thwart high-cost technologically advanced forces. This volume is divided into five sections covering different aspects of this topic, each of which is introduced by expert commentary written by series editor Douglas C. Lovelace, Jr. This volume contains thirteen useful documents exploring various facets of the shifting international security environment, including a detailed report on hybrid warfare issued by the Joint Special Operations University and a White Paper on special operations forces support to political warfare prepared by the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, as well as a GAO report and a CRS report covering similar topics. Specific coverage is also given to topics such as cybersecurity and cyberwarfare, the efficacy of sanctions in avoiding and deterring hybrid warfare threats, and the intersection of the military and domestic U.S. law enforcement.

A comprehensive guide to current research, reflecting recent technical breakthroughs that have established the usefulness of the mouse model as part of a bilateral exchange between experimental and clinical research. Recent years have seen a burst of studies on the mouse eye and visual system, fueled in large part by the relatively recent ability to produce mice with precisely defined changes in gene sequence. Mouse models have contributed to a wide range of scientific breakthroughs for a number of ocular and neurological diseases and have allowed researchers to address fundamental issues that were difficult to approach with other experimental models. This comprehensive guide to current research captures the first wave of studies in the field, with fifty-nine chapters by leading scholars that demonstrate the usefulness of mouse models as a bridge between experimental and clinical research. The opening chapters introduce the mouse as a species and research model, discussing such topics as the mouse's evolutionary history and the mammalian visual system. Subsequent sections explore more specialized subjects, considering optics, psychophysics, and the visual behaviors of mice; the organization of the adult mouse eye and central visual system; the development of the mouse eye (including comparisons to human development); the development and plasticity of retinal projections and visuotopic maps; mouse models for human eye disease (including glaucoma and cataracts); and the application of advanced genomic technologies (including gene therapy and genetic knockouts) to the mouse visual system. Readers of this unique reference will see that the study of mouse models has already demonstrated real translational prowess in vision research.

Tenderness : a novel Cormier, Robert Random House Children's Books, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 2013
Eighteen-year-old Eric has just been released from juvenile detention for murdering his mother and stepfather. Now he's looking for tenderness--tenderness he finds in caressing and killing beautiful girls. Fifteen-year-old Lori has run away from home again. Emotionally naïve but sexually precocious, she is also looking for tenderness--tenderness she finds in Eric. Will Lori and Eric be each other's salvation or destruction? Told from their alternating points of view, this harrowing thriller speeds to its fateful conclusion with an irresistible force, and a final twist that will not be easily forgotten.

Walker Evans & Company : the Museum of Modern Art, New York ; [... occasion of the exhibition "Walker Evans & Company, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, March 16 - July 26, 2000] Peter Galassi; Stuart Davis; Edward Hopper; Roy Lichtenstein; Ed Ruscha; Glenn Lowry; Walker Evans; Mathew Brady; Eugne Atget; Robert Frank; Lee Friedlander; August Sander; Edward Weston New York: Museum of Modern Art: Distributed by H.N. Abrams, New York, New York State, 2000
At The Heart Of This Book Lies The Work Of The Great American Photographer Walker Evans, Who Radically Expanded The Possibilities Of Photography As An Art. Photographers Before Evans Had Certainly Conceived Of Their Pictures As Art, But In Order To Make That Claim They Had Most Often Aimed At A Cultivated Visual Style That Would Advertise Its Differences From The Vast Mass Of Reportorial And Vernacular Photography. Evan's Work Of The Late 1920s And 1930s, However, Was Direct And Plainspoken, Conclusively Demonstrating How Richly Articulate And Challenging A Photograph Could Become By Affecting No More Than A Hard, Clear, Observant Gaze At The World Beyond The Lens. Evans Is The Moving Force Of Walker Evans & Company, But The Book, Which Presents Over 300 Works, In Photography And Other Mediums, By Over 100 Artists, Has A Larger Subject: It Is A Generously Expansive Study Of A Diverse, Long-lived Visual Tradition. Beginning With The Great Influences On Evans - American Vernacular Photography, And The Work Of The Europeans Eugene Atget And August Sander - Peter Galassi Goes On To Chart Evan's Own Influence On Later Generations Of Artists. That Influence May Be Direct, Or Roundabout; It May Also Be A Question Less Of A Definite Lineage Than Of A General Inheritance, A Shared Focus Of Interest Or Mode Of Approach.--jacket.
