Mind Seeing Mind: Mahamudra and the Geluk Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism (Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism) Jackson, Roger R. Wisdom Publications, Inc, Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, Somerville, MA, 2019
A definitive study of one of the most important practices in Tibetan Buddhism, with translations of a number of its key texts. Mahamudra, the “great seal,” refers to the ultimate nature of mind and reality, to a meditative practice for realizing that ultimate reality, and to the final fruition of buddhahood. It is especially prominent in the Kagyü tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, so it sometimes comes as a surprise that mahamudra has played an important role in the Geluk school, where it is part of a special transmission received in a vision by the tradition’s founder, Tsongkhapa. Mahamudra is a significant component of Geluk ritual and meditative life, widely studied and taught by contemporary masters such as the Dalai Lama. Roger Jackson’s Mind Seeing Mind offers us both a definitive scholarly study of the history, texts, and doctrines of Geluk mahamudra and masterful translations of its seminal texts. It provides a skillful survey of the Indian sources of the teaching, illuminates the place of mahamudra among Tibetan Buddhist schools, and details the history and major textual sources of Geluk mahamudra. Jackson also addresses critical questions, such as the relation between Geluk and Kagyü mahamudra, and places mahamudra in the context of contemporary religious studies. The translation portion of Mind Seeing Mind includes ten texts on mahamudra history, ritual, and practice. Among these are the First Panchen Lama’s root verses and autocommentary on mahamudra meditation, his ritual masterpiece Offering to the Guru, and a selection of his songs of spiritual experience. Mind Seeing Mind adds considerably to our understanding of Tibetan Buddhist spirituality and shows how mahamudra came to be woven throughout the fabric of the Geluk tradition.

"An outstanding introduction to the panorama of literary arts in Tibet. Everyone with interest in this civilization should study these essays in which the true wealth of Tibetan intellectual life becomes clear—an excellent contribution to the field."—Dr. Ronald Davidson, Fairfield University Director of Asian Studies Tibetan Literature addresses the immense variety of Tibet's literary heritage. An introductory essay by the editors attempts to assess the overall nature of 'literature' in Tibet and to understand some of the ways in which it may be analyzed into genres. The remainder of the book contains articles by nearly thirty scholars from America, Europe, and Asia—each of whom addresses an important genre of Tibetan literature. These articles are distributed among eight major rubrics: two on history and biography, six on canonical and quasi-canonical texts, four on philosophical literature, four on literature on the paths, four on ritual, four on literary arts, four on non-literary arts and sciences, and two on guidebooks and reference works.

Mind Seeing Mind: Mahamudra and the Geluk Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism (Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism) Roger R. Jackson Wisdom Publications, Inc, Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, Somerville, MA, 2019
Description A definitive study of one of the most important practices in Tibetan Buddhism, with translations of a number of its key texts. Review “Roger Jackson's Mind Seeing Mind: Mahamudra and the Geluk Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism is an outstanding achievement, vast in scope and profound in its engagement with Tibetan Buddhist contemplative and philosophical traditions. From the origins of the Mahamudra teaching in India, through its refinement and development among the Kagyü masters of Tibet, to its transmission to Jé Tsongkhapa and his Gelukpa successors down to the present day, Jackson guides the reader on a journey resembling the exploration of a great river from its turbulent headwaters to the spreading streams of its delta. Concluding with detailed consideration of contested questions about Mahamudra and a magnificent anthology of texts in translation, Mind Seeing Mind is a model study of the historical and doctrinal literature of Buddhism in Tibet.” (—Matthew T. Kapstein, École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris, and the University of Chicago ) “A lifetime of study has gone into this immensely important volume, and it shows on every page. The best historical overview of mahamudra available in any language, Mind Seeing Mind is also the definitive study of the Great Seal in the Geluk tradition. Erudite, yet accessible, it is a book no serious student of Buddhism can afford to overlook.” (—José Ignacio Cabezón, Dalai Lama Professor of Tibetan Buddhism and Cultural Studies, UC Santa Barbara ) “The mahamudra tradition of the New translation schools of Tibetan Buddhism and the ‘cutting through’ teachings of the Dzokchen tradition of the Old translation school bear a great deal in common. Integrating the four noble truths of the first turning of the wheel of Dharma with the teachings on the objective clear light of emptiness in the second turning, and the subjective clear light of the buddha nature of the third turning, they represent the pinnacle of the science of mind in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism. Roger Jackson has done us a great service in translating core mahamudra texts from the Geluk tradition and contextualizing them within the broader framework of Tibetan Buddhism. This volume is worthy of close attention by contemplatives and scientists alike, for it is enormously relevant to understanding the mind in the modern world.” (—B. Alan Wallace, president, Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies ) “The meditation techniques of the Tibetan Mahamudra traditions that purport to provide direct access to the luminous and empty nature of mind in an uncontrived sphere beyond any reification played an important role in the intellectual history of Tibet. Even though it is mainly known as a specialty of the Kagyü school, it also found a place in other traditions such as the Nyingma, Kadam, Sakya, Shiché, Jonang, and Geluk. In Mind Seeing Mind Roger Jackson presents for the first time a comprehensive work on Geluk Mahamudra against its Indian and Tibetan background, investigating its history, doctrines, and practices from a critical scholarly standpoint. At the same time the work also contains multiple translations of Tibetan texts crucial to Geluk Mahamudra, which profit from Jackson’s intimate acquaintance with the tradition. With this rare combination of skills, Jackson renders an enormous service for scholars and practitioners alike. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Geluk Mahamudra.” (—Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Mathes, University of Vienna ) About the Author Roger R. Jackson is John W. Nason Professor of Asian Studies and Religion, emeritus, at Carleton College, where for nearly three decades he taught the religions of South Asia and Tibet. He has also taught at the University of Michigan, Fairfield University, McGill University, and Maitripa College. Rebirth : a guide to mind, karma, and cosmos in the Buddhist world Roger R. Jackson Shambhala Publications, Incorporated, 1, 20220322
For anyone interested in what happens after death, this is a definitive guide to the concept of rebirth, or reincarnation, in Buddhism. Reincarnation has been a popular belief in cultures throughout the world for many millennia. The possibility that we lived before and may be born again, whether as a human or in some other form of existence, continues to fascinate us and features heavily in popular novels and movies, and also as a subject of recent scholarly studies. Although Buddhism is one of the religious traditions best known for asserting rebirth, the history and scope of Buddhist approaches to the idea has not received comprehensive treatment—until now. This first-ever guide to ideas and practices surrounding rebirth in Buddhism covers the historical context for the Buddha’s teachings on the topic, explains what Buddhists believe is actually reborn and where, surveys rebirth-related practices in multiple Buddhist cultures, and considers whether all Buddhist traditions agree about what happens after death. The book also addresses interpretations of rebirth in modern Buddhist contexts and recent scientific attempts to document reincarnation in conversation with Buddhist beliefs It is, in short, the first truly comprehensive overview of rebirth across the major Buddhist traditions, written by a leading scholar and teacher of Buddhism. Review “This is the most comprehensive and scholarly study on rebirth and karma that I have seen and would in my opinion constitute an authoritative work on this subject for many years to come. I hope that Roger Jackson will encourage colleagues to work on Sinhala and Tamil translations of this book.” —Gananath Obeyesekere, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, Princeton University. “The fruit of a lifetime of deep engagement with the subject, Roger Jackson’s Rebirth traces the history of Buddhist ideas about reincarnation across the Buddhist world from ancient times to the present. This is the definitive work on the topic. No other work matches it in terms of breadth and depth. Written in lively and accessible prose, and evincing Jackson’s tremendous erudition on every page, Rebirth is a major contribution to the study of Buddhism and the history of religions.” —José I. Cabezón, Dalai Lama Professor of Tibetan Buddhism and Cultural Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara. “Rebirth is the definitive study of Buddhist thought on this topic. Roger Jackson's scholarship is impeccable, attending to a vast literature with meticulous attention both to text and to context; the narrative arc takes us from pre-Buddhist Indian thought through contemporary Western Buddhist attitudes, exploring arguments for the reality of rebirth, the metaphysics of rebirth, and the role that rebirth plays in the larger Buddhist project. This is an extraordinary contribution to Buddhist Studies.”—Jay L. Garfield, Professor of Philosophy, University of Melbourne. “Erudite and eloquent, Roger Jackson takes the reader on a journey across the Buddhist world and across the centuries, from ancient India to contemporary America, setting forth both the mechanics and the poetics of rebirth along the way. For those who know little, you will learn much. For those who know much, you will learn more.” —Donald S. Lopez Jr., Arthur E. Link Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies, University of Michigan. “While Buddhism has no dogma, it does rest on a unique ‘view’ that necessarily includes acceptance of the reality of karma and rebirth. This is a complex subject; it is not possible to understand this Buddhist view without both distinguishing ultimate from relative truth and at the same time recognizing the inseparability of these two truths. While Roger Jackson’s new book on rebirth perhaps wisely avoids this complexity at a theoretical and philosophical level, it makes an important contribution to the discussion by approaching it at a very practical level. I found Dr. Jackson’s dissection of the different ways Buddhists approach the subject of rebirth to be not only interesting and provocative but also a valuable contribution to the way the subject can be understood and presented in the modern world.” —Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche, author of What Makes You Not a Buddhist. “Since [rebirth] is both so central to the Buddhist worldview, yet so commonly misunderstood, Jackson’s new book is almost like a public service.”—Buddhistdoor Global About the Author Roger R. Jackson, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Asian Studies and Religion at Carleton College. He has nearly 50 years of experience with the study and practice of Buddhism, particularly in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. His special interests include Indian and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, meditation, and ritual; Buddhist religious poetry; religion and society in Sri Lanka; the study of mysticism; and contemporary Buddhist thought. Roger is a highly respected and beloved scholar, Dharma teacher, and writer. He has authored many scholarly books and articles, and is a frequent contributor to Lion’s Roar, Buddhadharma, and Tricycle magazines.

Jackson (Editor), Lhundub Sopa (Translator) Wisdom Publicatiaons ; in association with the Institute of Tibetan Classics, Library of Tibetan Classics, 2017
The Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems, by Thuken Losang Chokyi Nyima (1737-1802), is arguably the widest-ranging account of religious philosophies ever written in pre-modern Tibet. Like most Tibetan texts on philosophical systems, this work covers the major schools of India, both Buddhist and non-Buddhist, but then goes on to discuss in detail the entire range of Tibetan traditions as well, with separate chapters on the Nyingma, Kadam, Kagyu, Shije, Sakya, Jonang, Geluk, and Bon schools. Not resting there, Thuken goes on to describe the major traditions of China--Confucian, Daoist, and the multiple varieties of Buddhist--as well as those of Mongolia, Khotan, and even Shambhala. The Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems is unusual, too, in its concern not just to describe and analyze doctrines, but to trace the historical development of the various traditions. The Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems is an eloquent and erudite presentation exploring the religious history and philosophical systems of an array of Asian Cultures--and offering evidence that the serious and sympathetic study of the history of religions has not been a moReview "An impressive translation of a fascinating and vitally important book. This will be of great interest to students of Tibetan Buddhism. Its broad scope and keen observation makes it an invaluable resource. And for scholars interested in the history of comparative religion, it shows how sophisticated, eighteenth-century Tibetan Buddhists could come to terms with diverse world religious traditions." (Guy Newland, Central Michigan University, author of Introduction to Emptiness ) "Thuken's Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems is a unique work, seeking to document the full range of philosophical traditions known in Tibet, including Indian, Chinese and, above all, indigenous Tibetan traditions. This translation is precise and a pleasure to read." (Matthew T. Kapstein, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes and the University of Chicago, editor of Buddhism Between Tibet and China ) "This notable work, completed at the beginning of the nineteenth century, presents an in-depth treatment of the key schools of Tibetan Buddhism--Nyingma, Kadam, Sakya, Kagyu, Gelug, and Jonang, as well as Bon. The reader-friendly translations introduce the texts to the general reader, making this a valuable contribution to our understanding of the richness of Tibetan Buddhism." (Mandala) About the Author Thuken Losang Chokyi Nyima (1737-1802) was among the most cosmopolitan and prolific Tibetan Buddhist masters of the late eighteenth century. Hailing from the "melting pot" region of Amdo, he was Mongol by heritage, and educated in Gelukpa monasteries. Throughout his life, he traveled widely in east and inner Asia, spending significant time in Central Tibet, Amdo, inner Mongolia, and at the Qing court in Beijing. He served as abbot of several important monasteries, and wrote hundreds of texts on Buddhist thought and practice, the most enduring and influential of which is the Crystal Mirror of Philosophical Systems. Born in the Tsang region of Tibet in 1923, Geshe Lhundub Sopa is both a spiritual master and a respected academic. He rose from a humble background to complete his geshe studies at Sera Je Monastic University in Lhasa with highest honors and was privileged to serve as a debate opponent for the Dalai Lama's own geshe examination in 1959. He moved to New Jersey in the United States in 1963 and in 1967 began teaching in the Buddhist Studies Program at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is now professor emeritus. In 1975, he founded the Deer Park Buddhist Center in Oregon, Wisconsin, site of the Dalai Lama's first Kalachakra initiation granted in the West. He is the author of several books in English, including the five-volume comprehensive teaching, Steps on the Path to Englightenment. Roger R. Jackson is the John W. Nason Professor of Asian Studies and Religion at Carleton College in Minnesota, where he teaches the religions of South Asia and Tibet. He has published many articles on the philosophy, ritual, meditative practices, and poetry of Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, and has written or co-edited several books, including Is Enlightenment Possible?, Tibetan Literature, Buddhist Theology, Tantric Treasures, and Mahamudra and the Bka' brgyud Tradition. He is a past editor of the Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies, and is currently co-editor of the Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies.nopoly of Western scholarship.

Saraha: Poet of Blissful Awareness (Lives of the Masters) Roger R. Jackson Shambhala Publications, Incorporated, FR, 2024
The life and works of the mysterious Indian yogin, Saraha, who has inspired Buddhist practitioners for over a thousand years. Saraha, “the Archer,” was a mysterious but influential tenth-century Indian Buddhist tantric adept who expressed his spiritual realization in mystic songs ( dohās ) that are enlightening, shocking, and confounding by turns. Saraha’s poetic verses made the esoteric ideas and practices of Vajrayāna accessible to a wide audience on the Indian subcontinent and served as a basis for the exposition, in Tibet, of mahāmudrā, the great-seal meditation on the nature of mind that permeates every tradition of Buddhism on the Tibetan plateau. This is the first book to attempt a thorough treatment of the context, life, works, poetics, and teachings of Saraha. It features a search for the “historical” Saraha through evidence provided by our knowledge of the medieval Indian context in which he likely...

lgli/Jackson, Roger R. - Mind Seeing Mind: Mahamudra and the Geluk Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism (Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism) (2019, Wisdom Publications).pdf

Tantric Treasures : Three Collections of Mystical Verse From Buddhist India Roger R Jackson; Sarahapāda; Kr̥ṣṇavajrapāda; Tillopāda; NetLibrary, Inc Oxford University PressNew York, 1St Edition, First Edition, US, 2004
Roger Jackson provides accurate, accessible translations of three classics of medieval Indian Buddhist mysticism: the ''couplet-treasuries'' of the great tantric masters Saraha, Kanha, and Tilopa. Since their composition around 1000 CE, these poems have exerted a powerful influence on spiritual life, as well as poetry and song, in India, Nepal, and Tibet. Jackson's fresh translations allow the poetry to shine through, capturing the sense and spirit of the poems in the original. Jackson offers a thorough introduction that deftly summarizes the latest scholarship, situating the poems in their historical context and making them accessible not only to scholars but also to students and practitioners.

Secularizing Buddhism: New Perspectives on a Dynamic Tradition: New Perspectives on a Dynamic Tradition Sarah Shaw; Bhikku Bodhi; Kate Crosby; Roger Jackson; Richard K. Payne Shambhala Publications, Incorporated, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), New York, 2021
A timely essay collection on the development and influence of secular expressions of Buddhism in the West and beyond. How do secular values impact Buddhism in the modern world? What versions of Buddhism are being transmitted to the West? Is it possible to know whether an interpretation of the Buddha's words is correct? In this new essay collection, opposing ideas that often define Buddhist communities--secular versus religious, modern versus traditional, Western versus Eastern--are unpacked and critically examined. These reflections by contemporary scholars and practitioners reveal the dynamic process of reinterpreting and reimagining Buddhism in secular contexts, from the mindfulness movement to Buddhist shrine displays in museums, to whether rebirth is an essential belief. This collection explores a wide range of modern understandings of Buddhism--whether it is considered a religion, philosophy, or lifestyle choice--and questions if secular Buddhism is purely a Western invention, offering a timely contribution to an ever-evolving discussion.

Modern crocodylians—crocodiles, alligators, caiman (Central and South America), and gharials (India)—have evolved over 250 million years from a fully terrestrial, bipedal ancestor. Along with birds, crocodylians are the only living members of Archosauria, the group including nonavian dinosaurs. Ruling Reptiles features contributions on a broad range of topics surrounding crocodylian evolution and biology including osteology, osteohistology, developmental biology, myology, odontology, functional morphology, allometry, body size estimation, taphonomy, parasitology, ecology, thermophysiology, and ichnology. It demonstrates how the wide variety of these studies can also provide crucial insights into dinosaurian biology and evolution. Featuring the latest findings and interpretations, Ruling Reptiles: Crocodylian Biology and Archosaur Paleobiology is an essential resource for zoologists, biologists, and paleontologists.

Beer Hunter, Whisky Chaser : New Writing on Beer and Whisky in Honour of Michael Jackson. Beaumont, Stephen;Buxton, Ian;Jackson, Michael Neil Wilson Publishing;Classic Expressions, 2011;2009
A unique testament to Michael Jackson from the world's leading food and drinks writers. They are: Stephen Beaumont, Dave Broom, Ian Buxton, John Hansell, Julie Johnson, Charles MacLean, Hans Offringa, F Paul Pacult, Roger Protz, Lucy Saunders, Conrad Seidl, Carolyn Smagalski and Gavin D Smith. The collaborators represent a roll of honour from food and drinks writing. All have donated an original essay - without fee - to Beer Hunter, Whisky Chaser. The print edition book was published on 27 March, 2009, to mark Jackson's birth date. All proceeds from the publication, which was supported by leading single malt whisky The Glenlivet, were donated to the Parkinson's Disease Society of the UK raising £12,000 for the cause. Editor Ian Buxton, who conceived the project, said "Michael Jackson dominated the world of both beer and whisky writing for two decades and was hugely influential in both 'real ale' and single malt whisky. A complete generation of writers has cause to be grateful to him, not to mention countless brewers and distillers. This new book honours that legacy." He concludes: "If variety is what you celebrate in your choice of whisky or beer, then this is truly a joyous and eclectic celebration of a life well-lived. We have sought to honour Michael with words, fresh and new writing on beer and whisky that he would have enjoyed reading; that he would have respected; that he might even have wished to have written himself." The contents list is: Introduction by Ian Buxton; Quintessentially Michael by Carolyn Smagalski; When's the Right Time for Barley Wine? by Stephen Beaumont; Three Stepps to ... by Dave Broom; Pants to Whisky: An Authentic Link by Ian Buxton; My Friend, Whisky by John Hansell; Thirty Years of American Beer by Julie Johnson; The Renaissance of Malt Whisky by Charles MacLean; A'bunadh: A Short Story by Hans Offringa; A Question of Priorities by F Paul Pacult; Lagering by Roger Protz; Ale-wyfes and Beer-chefs The Evolution of Cooking with Beer by Lucy Saunders; In Search of German Beer Culture by Conrad Seidl; Thirty Years of British Beer by Gavin D Smith; Contributors' Biographies.

Doublespeak: The Rhetoric of the Far Right since 1945 (Explorations of the Far Right Book 3) Feldman, Matthew(Editor);Jackson, Paul(Editor) ibidem-Sachbuch. ein Imprint von Jessica Haunschild u. Christian Schön GbR, Explorations of the far right, 3, Stuttgart, Germant, 2014
<p>This timely intervention exposes the euphemized language of the extreme right as a deceptive attempt to secure greater influence over public policy. Since the end of World War II, the extreme right has made strategic use of "doublespeak," which apes the language of liberal democracy. Attentive observation and accurate recognition of these tactics means taking the extreme right's deliberately crafted slogans, symbols, and themes seriously. These essays investigate the extreme right's attempts at "repackaging" contemporary ultranationalism to make it more palatable to mainstream European and American tastes.<br></p>

Overcoming Deficits of Aging: A Behavioral Approach (Nato Science Series B:, 89a) Roger L. Patterson, Larry W. Dupree, David A. Eberly, Gary M. Jackson, Michael J. O’Sullivan, Louis A. Penner, Carla Dee Kelly (auth.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, Applied Clinical Psychology 89a, 1, 1982
That older patients can be successfully treated has only recently been recognized by professionals and by older persons themselves. That older persons can also be taught new skills or retaught previously existing skills constitutes even newer knowledge. By focusing on the reversibility 0/ behavioral defidts in the elderly the authors, under the leadership of Dr. Roger Patterson, have made both a scientific and a humanitarian contribution to the well-being of older persons. In this volume they have presented a theoretical basis and a practical how-to method of overcoming behavioral deficits. They have demonstrated that their modular technique of fostering improved functioning in such areas as activities of daily living and sodal skills not only has been successful but also has allowed individuals to return to less restrictive environments or to completely independent living. The approach is an interdisciplinary one, appropriately since older people often experience diffirulties in multiple areas of function ing. The authors have tried to integrate social, medical, and behav ioral approaches, with an emphasis on behavioral methodologies. Although this book deals primarily with behavioral approaches to treatment of the elderly in a single setting, the volume c1early con stitutes achallenge to other scientists and clinicians to apply the techniques described here in other settings. A medical colleague of mine, a geriatrician, recently expressed the opinion that he had never encountered an older patient for whom he could not do something to improve health.
