Psalms 73-150 Selderhuis, Herman J.; Inter-Varsity Press, 2018
Christians have often turned to the Book of Psalms as a significant resource for Christian belief and practice, and as the church's prayer book and hymnal. The Protestant reformers also turned to the Psalms during their time of significant spiritual renewal, theological debate, and ecclesial reform. In this RCS volume, Herman Selderhuis guides readers through Reformation-era commentary on the second half of the Psalter.

John Calvin : a Pilgrim's Life Selderhuis, Herman J. IVP Academic ; Inter-Varsity Press, Downers Grove (Ill.), Nottingham (GB), cop. 2009
<p>There are many biographies of John Calvin, the theologian—some villifying him and others extolling his virtues—but few that reveal John Calvin, the man.</p> <p>Professor and renowned Reformation historian Herman Selderhuis has written this book to bring Calvin near to the reader, showing him as a man who had an impressive impact on the development of the Western world, but who was first of all a believer struggling with God and with the way God governed both the world and his own life.</p> <p>Selderhuis draws on Calvin's own publications and commentary on the biblical figures with whom he strongly identified to describe his theology in the context of his personal development. Throughout we see a person who found himself alone at many of the decisive moments of his life—a fact that echoed through Calvin's subsequent sermons and commentaries. Selderhuis's unique and compelling look at John Calvin, with all of his merits and foibles, ultimately discloses a man who could not find himself at home in the world in which he lived.</p>

A Companion to Reformed Orthodoxy (Brill's Companions to the Christian Tradition, Volume: 40) Herman J. Selderhuis (ed.) BRILL; Brill, Brill's companions to the Christian tradition, volume 40, Leiden [The Netherlands, 2013
This book reflects and comprises the latest in research on the history and theology of Reformed Orthodoxy (± 1550-1750) and is at the same time a work in progress, which makes this volume in the Companion series unique. The reason for this is not only the quality of the authors and the chapters they have produced, but also the fact that the study of Reformed Orthodoxy has in recent years taken an entirely new approach and has received renewed and spirited attention, whose results have so far not been brought together in one book. The renewed interest and reappraisal of this period in intellectual history is reflected in this work in which an international team of renowned scholars give an oversight of this fascinating period in intellectual history. Contributors include Willem van Asselt, Aza Goudriaan, Irena Backus, Mark Beach, Christian Moser, Anton Vos, Tobias Sarx, Andreas Mühling, Carl Trueman, Graeme Murdock, Joel Beeke, Sebastian Rehnman, Scott Clark, John Fesko, Luca Baschera, Maarten Wisse, Hugo Meijer, Pieter Rouwendal, and John Witte.

Erscheinungsdatum: 21.05.2008

Lutheran Theology and the Shaping of Society: The Danish Monarchy As Example : The Danish Monarchy As Example Bo Kristian Holm, Nina J. Koefoed, Günter Frank, Barbara Mahlmann-Bauer, Bruce Gordon, Tarald Rasmussen, Günther Wassilowsky, Siegrid Westphal Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Company KG, Refo500 Academic Studies, 33, Aufl. ed., 2018
From different perspectives this book studies the role of Reformation theology in the shaping of Danish society and the social dimensions of Lutheran confessional culture. The book develops an approach making it possible to draw strong conclusion about the social teaching of Luther and its impact on the development of the Danish society. It works on a conceptual level by analyzing the social dimensions of key Lutheran concepts and their translation into the doctrine of the three estates (church, household, and state), and on the level of lived experience of life within these three orders, not at least within the household forming the ideal form also for church and state. Thus the chapters in the book endeavor to connect the social ideas inherent in the Lutheran confession with the social formation of the Danish state from the Reformation into the period of Absolutism. A long mono-confessional situation within the Danish Monarchy makes it possible to study the impact of Lutheranism and the development of a confessional culture within a uniquely long timeframe. The focus is on basic mediums for the translation of Lutheran ideas into social practice: law, primarily connected to marriage and family; and the role of household, both as primary social relations and as basic social and political model. In this way the book offers important insights for theologians, historians, sociologists, and academically anyone interested in the relation between theology and sociality, confession and culture. This volume contains the plenary papers and a selection of short papers from the Seventh Annual RefoRC conference, which was held 1012 May 2017 in Wittenberg. The contributions concentrate on the effects of Luther's new theology and draw the lines from Luther's contemporaries into the early seventeenth century. Developments in art, catholic responses and Calvinistic reception are only some of the topics. The volume reflects the interdisciplinarity and inter-confessionality that characterizes present research on the 16th century reformations and underlines the fact that this research has not come to a conclusion in 2017. The papers in this conference volume point to lacunae and will certainly stimulate further research. Calvin's Theology of the Psalms (Texts and Studies in Reformation and Post-Reformation Thought) Herman J. Selderhuis Baker Books, 2, 2007
In this intriguing book, Herman Selderhuis argues that John Calvin's biblical interpretation of the Psalms is fundamentally shaped by his doctrine of God. Selderhuis minimizes references to other Calvin studies and other works by Calvin, thus allowing Calvin's theology on the Psalms to speak for itself. The book is organized thematically according to divine attributes. Reformation and Calvin scholars as well as interested Reformed readers will value this resource.

Psalms 1-72 : Old Testament Volume 7 Herman J Selderhuis; Timothy George; Scott M Manetsch IVP Academic, an imprint of InterVarsity Press, Reformation Commentary on Scripture Ser., 1, 2015
Preaching's 2017 Survey of Bibles and Bible Reference Preaching's Top 5 Commentaries of 2016 "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night." (Psalm 1:1-2, ESV) The book of Psalms has been the subject of daily and nightly meditation throughout the history of the church, and has been a significant resource for Christian belief and practice, often serving as the church's prayer book and hymnal. Like generations of Christians before them, the Protestant Reformers turned often to the book of Psalms, but they did so during a time of significant spiritual renewal, theological debate and ecclesiological reform. In the Psalms the Reformers found comfort, guidance and wisdom from God that applied to their context as much as it did to David's. As John Calvin explained, the Psalms demonstrate every emotion that people have experienced: "The Holy Spirit has presented in a living image all the griefs, sorrows, fears, doubts, hopes, cares, perplexities, in short, all the emotions with which human minds are often disturbed." Moreover, as Martin Luther proclaimed, the Reformers also heard in the Psalms a resounding affirmation of the good news of Jesus Christ: "The Psalter ought to be a precious and beloved book because it promises Christ's death and resurrection so clearly." In this volume, Herman Selderhuis guides readers through the diversity of Reformation commentary on the first half of the Psalter. Here are both familiar voices and lesser-known figures from a variety of theological traditions, including Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans and Roman Catholics, many of whose comments appear here for the first time in English. By drawing on a variety of resources--including commentaries, sermons, treatises and confessions--this volume will enable scholars to better understand the depth and breadth of Reformation commentary, provide resources for contemporary preachers, and aid all those who seek to meditate upon God's Word day and night.

At the Synod of Dordrecht (1618–19), the deep questions of justification and faith, election and rejection, time and eternity, grace and free will, the individual and the body of Christ, Israel and the church, the acquisition of salvation through Christ and its application by His Spirit, baptism and regeneration, and especially the precise relationship between these, were at stake. These deep questions are addressed in this study. Lines are drawn to the historical, theological and political context of the time of the synod. Patristics and the Middle Ages are not absent, nor are the metaphysical questions related to these theological issues. Also the church polity of Dordt is discussed, especially the roots, influences and structures of its church order. This volume ends with a hermeneutical reflection on the way we confess the electing God today. Erscheinungsdatum: 13.06.2022

Renovatio : Martin Luther's Augustinian theology of sin, grace and holiness Phil Anderas, Christopher B. Brown, Günter Frank, Gordon, Bruce, Barbara Mahlmann-Bauer Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Company KG, Refo500 academic studies, v. 57, 57, 2019
Much mainstream Luther scholarship (and Lutheran theology) holds that Martin Luther downplayed, denied, derided, or just plain ignored “the holiness without which no one shall see the Lord” (Heb. 12:14). Phil Anderas advances a revisionist thesis: from the first inklings of his “Augustinian turn” c. 1514 to his death in 1546, Luther held and taught a robust theology of progressive renewal in holiness, carefully calibrated to the sober reality of residual sin and the astonishing gospel of grace in Jesus Christ. As it is set forth in the works that embody Luther’s most considered judgments (c. 1535-46), this gospel-centered and irreducibly trinitarian dogmatics of real renewal in holiness is “Augustinian” and “evangelical” in equal parts. As such, it commands the regard of theologians who stand in the tradition of the Church’s doctor gratiae. The argument proceeds in three steps: first, an exposition of the mature Luther’s dogmatics of sin, grace, and holiness; second, an investigation of the roots of this dogmatics in the theology of the “420s Augustine,” with whom a younger Luther was busily engaged c. 1514-16; third, an account of the continuities and discontinuities that characterize the development of Luther’s theology from its embryonic state in the mid-1510s through the breakthroughs of the 1518-21 period to the settled position of the old Doctor. Heavenly Providence: A Historical Exploration of the Development of Calvin's Biblical Doctrine of Divine Providence (Reformed Historical Theology, 75) Suk Yu Chan; Herman J. Selderhuis Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Company KG, Reformed Historical Theology, 1st edition, Göttingen, 2022
Suk Yu Chan provides a revisit of John Calvin’s interpretation of the doctrine of divine providence and builds upon a vast repository of quality research conducted by previous Reformation scholars. The author adopts a historical approach to explore Calvin’s works from 1534–1559, and argues that from 1534–1541, Calvin used the image of the fountain to portray God as the source of everything, who has power to preserve and give life to all creatures on earth. Between the Latin edition of the Institutes in 1539 and the French translation of that work in 1541, Calvin was indecisive about the definition of special providence, articulating a fitful relationship between providence and soteriology in these two texts. In 1552, Calvin gradually ceased using the image of the fountain to portray God as the source of everything, and he also delivered three definitions of divine providence: general providence, special providence, and the very presence of God. Based on the theological understanding of divine providence which he had developed from 1534–1552, Calvin presented his exegesis on the Book of Job and the Book of Psalms through his sermons and commentaries. Furthermore, Calvin also discussed the importance of the human role in God’s providence. While Calvin’s theological understanding of God’s providence was inherited by his successor, Theodore Beza, Beza applied it differently in his exegesis on the Book of Job. From 1534–1559, Calvin formulated his biblical doctrine of divine providence, articulating that divine providence is heavenly providence which is comprised of eternal predestination and divine preservation.

Christians or Jews? : Early Transylvanian Sabbatarianism (approx. 1580-1621) Réka Tímea Újlaki-Nagy; Herman J Selderhuis; Christopher B Brown; Günter Frank; Barbara Mahlmann-Bauer; Tarald Rasmussen; Violet Soen; Zsombor Tóth; Günther Wassilowsky; Siegrid Westphal; Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Company KG, Refo500 Academic Studies (R5AS), 1. Auflage, Göttingen, 2022
Transylvanian Sabbatarianism emerged from the aspirations of the Reformation, without direct contact with the Jews. Although the most frequently asked question about them concerns their identity - were they Christians or Jews - the answers of the literature are superficial, biased, and take only an external point of view. The aim of this book, therefore, is to move closer to the 16-17th century Sabbatarian manuscripts and to examine how much they were still connected to Christianity in their biblical interpretations, doctrines and religious practices, how they adapted to Judaism, and how they saw themselves in relation to the two world religions. The analysis of Reka Timea Ujlaki-Nagy shows that although they still held some Christian beliefs, these were considered to be incidental and unnecessary to salvation. Sabbatarians followed the ideal of an age preceding Christ, consequently the Reformation effort to restitute apostolic Christianity disappeared from their religious thought.

Herman Selderhuis As Editor Of This Volume Has Brought Together A Team Of Experts, Resulting In A Unique Approach Since Each Chapter Is Co-written By A Catholic And A Protestant Author, Who Have All Integrated The Latest Research Results. Each Section Begins With A Brief Historiographical Overview. The Same Time, Ecclesiastical Events Are Always Set Within A Greater Framework Of Political, Social, And Cultural Developments For Which Reason Each Author Has Taken The Liberty To Describe Its Own Method. The User Will Find In This Book Tables, Diagrams, And Illustrations. Also Many Source Texts Are Integrated In The Narration. Theses Texts Are Intended To Bring The Described Events And People Closer To The Reader And, As It Were, To Let Them Speak The Words.0the Name Of The Book As “handbook Of The Church History Of The Netherlands” Immediately Brings To Mind Three Problematic Complexes Which Are Relevant To Its User. First, There Is The Nature Of A Handbook, That Is Intended To Be A Good Tool But Also Has Its Limitations: It Stimulates And Necessitates The Use Of Further Books. Second, The Area. The Netherlands Is A Plurality And That Is Also Noticeable In Its Church History, For Each Region, Town, And Village Has Its Own Church History. Third, The History Of The Church For Sure Is The Most Important Aspect, But This History Can Only Be Understood If It Is Described In The Context Of Political And Social Developments. Preparing for Death, Remembering the Dead Flæten, Jon Øygarden (editor);Rasmussen, Tarald (editor) Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Gmbh & Co, Volume 022, 2015 apr 22
Death and dying were not in the main focus of the denominational conflicts of the 16th century. However, pious literature covered these topics again and again, not only before the Reformation, but after it as well. Here, certain denominational differences are clearly visible. Partly, these differences consist in the use of genres: For example, funeral sermons are an often used genre among Lutherans, while they are much rarer in the Reformed tradition. Similar differences can be observed concerning epitaphs. In Roman Catholic areas, funeral sermons and epitaphs are common in the 16th century, too; but their religious function is often a different from the one in Lutheranism. Beyond such interdenominational differences, there are also interesting continuities and connections which the contributors of the volume analyze. For example, there is a certain continuity between 16th century Lutheran funeral sermons and the late medieval tradition of ars moriendi. The volume contains papers presented at the Second RefoRC Conference in Oslo in 2012, and is characterized by a multiconfessional and multidisciplinary approach, with contributions from Church History, Art History, Archaeology, History of Literature and Cultural History. Within a field of research dominated by specialized contributions (e.g. on ars moriendi traditions or on specific traditions of funeral monuments and funeral sermons), the broad approach of this volume may further stimulate to comparative and cross-confessional reflection.

Reformation und Rationalität (Refo500 Academic Studies) (German Edition) Selderhuis, Herman (editor);Waschke, Ernst-Joachim (editor) Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Company KG, Volume 017, 2015 may
On 19th October 1512, Martin Luther received his doctorate of theology under the chairmanship of Andreas Bodenstein of Karlstadt. Throughout his life, Luther remained tied to the Universityof Wittemberg. The Reformation movement was initially driven by and through his concern with academic issues, which also from the outset pertained to the relationship between theology and the other sciences. The contributors to this volume describe the relationship between faith and reason – or ratio and pietas – which was assessed in different ways in the Reformation, described by some as oppositional and by others as harmonious. Moreover, reformers referred back to medieval philosophical and theological points of view to relate reason with belief. The way in which this was done was definitive, for example for the establishment of universities, relations between science and the Church and in matters concerning the Bible and preaching. The lectures printed in this volume address the question of the relationship between the Reformation and reason before a European, interdenominational horizon. Erscheinungsdatum: 20.05.2015

Erscheinungsdatum: 06.04.2020

Erscheinungsdatum: 18.09.2013

In 11 essays The Doctrine of Election in Reformed Perspective reflect ongoing investigations concerning the doctrine of election, with special focus on the Synod of Dort 1618–19. Important lines of demarcation between different Reformed orthodox groups and denominations find their root divergence, as well as historical concentration point, in relation to this very issue. The ongoing research presented in this collection can open up a fresh field of fertile investigation for theological discussion. Moreover, she may lead to interdisciplinary perspectives and a cooperative approach to research, also beyond the field of theology. For this too is the field of philosophers and historians, those who trace the history of Christianity or are studying early modern Europe. The volume consists of three sections. In the first Part three essays reflect historical and philosophical issues before the Synod of Dort. Part Two explores aspects of the Synod of Dort itself. The focus in Part Three is on the reception of the Synod of Dort. Finally, the following question is answered: How were the Canons of Dort regarded in the 17th–19th century, and what does the history of their editions tell us?The editor, Frank van der Pol, was the program leader of the combined research group Early Modern Reformed Theology (EMRT) of the theological universities Apeldoorn and Kampen. In cooperation with the A Lasco Bibliothek Emden the EMRT organized an international conference on Oct. 29 and 30, 2014 about the doctrine of election in reformed perspective. The researchgroup is convinced that the dual line of research on history and theology of the Reformation tradition must continue and be strengthened. On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the Synod of Dort, the researchers, wanting to do their work in a broader context with a wider dialogue, make their proceedings accessible for more people and institutes by publishing them in this volume. The Power of Religion / Religion and Power: Third Annual Conference 2020 Herman J. Selderhuis (editor) de Gruyter GmbH, Walter, European Academy of Religion (EuARe) Lectures; 3, 2023
Open Access How does the powerful effect that religion has on public and personal life relate to the various spheres of our culture? Is the relationship between power and religion always negative or can religion also affect individuals and societies positively? This volume of the EuARe Lectures, edited by Herman Selderhuis, collects the texts of the lectures delivered at the Third Annual Conference of the European Academy of Religion (2020) on the topic “The Power of Religion / Religion and Power”. Scott Appleby explores the connection, in the religious imagination, among glorifying the divine, sanctifying the mundane and exercising political and cultural power. Cyril Hovorun addresses the issue of the politicization of religion, focusing in particular on Eastern Christian cases. Susanne Schröter offers an insight into the current debate on Islam in Germany. Finally, Kristina Stoeckl analyses the complex relationship among Europe’s new religious conflicts, Russian orthodoxy, American Christian conservatives and the emergence of a European populist right-wing.

The Oxford Handbook of the Bible and the Reformation (Oxford Handbooks) Jennifer Powell McNutt (ed.); Herman J. Selderhuis (ed.) IRL Press at Oxford University Press, Oxford Handbooks, 2024
During the Reformation of the sixteenth century, the role of the Bible in both Protestant and Roman Catholic branches of western Christianity was vital and complex. Drawing on new technologies such as movable type, this period saw extraordinary energy and enterprise put into the translation, interpretation, and publication of Christianity's sacred text. As a result, an increasingly broad section of the population, from scholars and clergy to laity and children, came to be involved in the reception of the Bible and its position in early modern religious expression. The Oxford Handbook of the Bible and the Reformation provides readers with a deeper understanding of the expansive history of the Bible as it was shaped, shared, and received across Christian traditions. Chapters explore the biblical canon, translation and print, the development of Reformation hermeneutics, the history of Bible commentators, and exegesis relating to key texts and theological themes of Reformation writing and discourse. Engaging the subject broadly, intricately, and robustly, the expertise of over fifty leading experts illuminates the early modern Bible's composition and position as scripture and, from the Renaissance era on, as a printed book. By including the contributions of radical reformers, Catholics, and women scholars, the Handbook presents a deep and wide-ranging account of the importance of the Bible's reach and authority among all western Christians.

More Than Luther: The Reformation and the Rise of Pluralism in Europe (Refo500 Academic Studies, 55) Karla Apperloo-Boersma; Herman J. Selderhuis; Christopher B. Brown; Günter Frank; Bruce Gordon; Barbara Mahlmann-Bauer; Tarald Rasmussen; Violet Soen; Zsombor Tóth; Günther Wassilowsky; Siegrid Westphal Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Gmbh & Co, Bookwire GmbH, Gottingen, 2019
This volume contains the plenary papers and a selection of shortpapers from the Seventh Annual RefoRC conference, which was held May 10–12th 2017 in Wittenberg. The contributions concentrate on the effects of Luther ́s new theology and draw the lines from Luther ́s contemporaries into the early seventeenth century. Developments in art, catholic responses and Calvinistic reception are only some of the topics. The volume reflects the interdisciplinarity and interconfessionality that characterizes present research on the 16th century reformations and underlines the fact that this research has not come to a conclusion in 2017. The papers in this conference volume point to lacunae and will certainly stimulate further research. Contributors: Wim François, Antonio Gerace, Siegrid Westphal, Edit Szegedi, Maria Lucia Weigel, Graeme Chatfield, Jane Schatkin Hettrick, Marta Quatrale, Aurelio A. Constantino de la Fuente (San Clemente, 1502 - Seville, 1560) : from acclaimed cathedral preacher to condemned "Lutheran" heretic Frances Luttikhuizen; Herman J Selderhuis; Christopher B Brown; Günter Frank; Barbara Mahlmann-Bauer; Tarald Rasmussen; Violet Soen; Zsombor Tóth; Günther Wassilowsky; Siegrid Westphal; Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Company KG, Refo500 Academic Studies (R5AS); 88, 1, 2022
During the first half of the sixteenth century the Spanish Inquisition fought “Lutheranism” in a benign way, but as time passed the power struggle between those that favoured reform and the detractors intensified, until persecution became relentless under the mandate of Inquisitor General Fernando de Valdés. The power struggle did not catch Constantino by surprise, but the tables turned faster than he had expected. On 1 August 1558 Constantino preached his last sermon in the cathedral of Seville; fifteen days later he was imprisoned. Constantino’s evangelising zeal is evident in all his works, but the core of his theology can be found in Beatus Vir, where he deals with the doctrines of sin and pardon, free grace, providence, predestination, and the relationship between faith and works. In his exposition of Psalm 1, Constantino does not resort to human philosophies but associates the spiritual fall of humanity with ugliness. In his exhortation to the reader, he states: “we shall plainly see the repulsiveness of that which seems so good in the eyes of insane men, and the beauty and greatness of that which the Divine Word has promised and assured those who turn to its counsel.” Erscheinungsdatum: 13.06.2022

The ground, method, and goal of Amandus Polanus' (1561-1610) Doctrine of God : a historical and contextual analysis Stephen B Tipton; Herman J Selderhuis; Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. ein Imprint der Brill Deutschland GmbH, Reformed Historical Theology, 1. Edition, Göttingen, 2022
Amandus Polanus (1561–1610) has often been described as a highly significant theologian, but also a neglected one. Part of Polanus’ significance comes from his inclusion of ethics and practical application in his discussion of theology and the way in which his theology mixes Ramist dichotomies and the scholastic distinctions common in Christian Aristotelianism. Stephen B. Tipton shows how Polanus’ understanding of God’s essence and attributes is built upon the ground of scripture, arranged with the aid of logical arguments and reasoning, and aimed at the worship and glory of the Triune God. Tipton defends this conclusion against previous research which suggests that Polanus’ theology is grounded in rationalism and subordinates the Trinity beneath an Aristotelian notion of God’s perfect unity. This research not only corrects these previous notions about Polanus, but it also provides greater insight into the early Reformed Orthodox period and the theology that arose from that time. A Faith Worth Teaching : The Heidelberg Catechism’s Enduring Heritage Jon D. Payne & Sebastian Heck [Payne, Jon D. & Heck, Sebastian] Reformation Heritage Books, Reformation Heritage Books, Grand Rapids, 2013
For 450 years, churches throughout the world have been using the Heidelberg Catechism (1563) to instruct God's people in foundational Christian doctrine. When Elector Frederick III (1515–1576) commissioned the preparation of a manual for instructing the youth and guiding the pastors and teachers of his domain, he could not have imagined the profound effect it would have on future generations of Christians. The most widely used, most influential Reformation catechism, the “Heidelberger” shines forth the blessed truths of the gospel in 129 questions and answers, beginning with the memorable, ever-enduring subject of our “only comfort in life and in death.” In A Faith Worth Teaching, edited by Jon Payne and Sebastian Heck, an array of faithful pastor-scholars celebrate the Heidelberg Catechism on its 450th anniversary with a collection of essays on its dynamic history, rich theology, and fruit-bearing practice that will be an encouragement to pastors and laypersons alike. A soul prepared for heaven : the theological foundation of Isaac Watts' spirituality W Britt Stokes; Herman J Selderhuis; Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Company KG, Reformed Historical Theology, 1. Edition, Göttingen, 2022
From his first publication of hymns in 1707, common knowledge regarding Isaac Watts (1674–1748) often revolves around his hymn-writing legacy. Though Watts legacy as a hymnographer is significant, he also functions as a key transitional figure between the English Puritans and the Evangelicals during eighteenth-century English dissent. As a pastor, theologian, philosopher, and literary mainstay of his era, Watts’ influence grew well beyond his early work in hymnody to impact scores of Christians on both sides of the Atlantic. Watts’ approach to Christian spirituality is an area of his thought thats been unexplored. This book provides the first ever analysis of Watts’ theological vision for the Christian spiritual life. In emphasizing the experience of holiness and happiness, Watts leans heavily upon his Reformed theological heritage to underscore how knowing and loving God are central to God’s preparation of the soul for heaven. Psalms 73-150 Herman J. Selderhuis 2018

Protestant majorities and minorities in early modern Europe : confessional boundaries and contested identities Burton, Simon (editor);Wilczek, Piotr (editor) Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Company KG, Refo500 Academic Studies (R5AS); 53, 1, 2019 aug 11
## Contents drew extensively on as ermon by Heinrich Bullinger, the influentialS wiss Reformed theologian. As Ittzéss uggests,a tatime when Lutheran and Reformed theologianswere increasingly at odds confessionally, theircommon stance with respect to the immortality of the soul showst he ongoing potential for philosophical and theological cross-fertilisation between rival communities. Questionss urrounding the soul are also at the heart of Alessandra Celati's chapter "AP eculiar Reformed Minority: Italian Protestant Physicians between Religious Propaganda, Inquisitorial Repression and Freedom of Thought".This focusses on the reception of the Reformation in the sixteenth-centuryI talian medical community and its impactonthe wider horizon of the European Reformation, especially in its radical streams. Celati shows that the physician'soffice as doctors of body and soul, gavet hem an important spiritual role in their communities, frequently causing them to come into conflict with the Inquisition. The records of the Inquisition show that many Italian doctors were attracted to Reformed doctrine. However, their own education and especially its radical Aristotelian(Averroistic) tenor, often led these same doctors to unconventional views of the soul and its relation to God. In advocating an unprecedented freedom of thought, Celati shows how they sought to overcome religious boundaries at the very moment when the different confessions were entrenching themselves, ever moredeeply, in positions of doctrinal rigidity. Asimilar desire to break down traditional boundaries, albeit towards av ery different end, wasinevidence in early modern Ramism, which is the subject of Simon Burton'schapter "From Minority Discourse to Universal Method: Polish Chaptersinthe Evolution of Ramism".Burton examinesaspects of the complex evolution of Ramism in the seventeenthcentury, examining especially the tension between its increasing marginalisation and its universalist aspirations. In particular, he considers the wayi nw hich both pragmatic and theological considerations motivated the adoption of Ramism in minority contexts and fuelled its ongoing transformation. The first case-study focusseso nB artholomäus Keckermann,o ne of the leading intellectuals of the early seventeenth century. Keckermann'sown desire to relievethe embattled Reformedcommunityofh is nativeDanzig, under siege from ahostile Lutheran majority, led him from being a critic of Ramist educational methods to becoming apioneer in theiradaptation. This leads into discussion of Jan Amos Comenius, the visionary Czech philosopher and theologian. Even more than Keckermann, Comenius saw the potential of Ramism to contributet ot he reform and reunification of divided Christendom. From Keckermann to Comenius (via Johann Heinrich Alsted) we can therefore chart the wayi nw hich different minority experiences, withint he broader Reformed community, shapedthe evolution of Ramism and prepared the wayfor universal reformation. Magdalena Luszczynska'schapter "Inter-Faith Disputation,Christian-Hebraism or aL eadership Campaign?: The Multi-Dimensional Character of Marcin Czechowic'sAnti-Jewish Polemics" presents an account of the wayinwhich Marcin Czechowic, atheologian of the Polish Brethren, exploited the "otherness" of the Jewish faith in order both to distance himself and his Anti-Trinitarianviews from accusations of "Judaising" and to position himself as the natural leader of the Anti-Trinitarians. Examining in detail Czechowic'sAnti-Jewish polemics, which were written in the form of dialogue with aJewish Rabbi, Luszczynskashows how Czechowic'sinter-faithdiscussion with aJew becamethe implicit framework for intra-faith discussion with his Anti-Trinitarian rivals. In particular, by presenting himself as ad eeply-learned Christian Hebraist -av eneer, as Luszczynska demonstrates -he wasa ble to cleverly address the issues of pre-existence and ## Gábor Ittzés From Bullinger to Speckerand Garcaeus The Reformed Origins of the Lutheran Doctrine of the Immortality of the Soul in the Sixteenth Century ## 1. 5B asic information has long been readily available on him in standardhandbooks, cf.,e.g.,ADB 3:513-514, NDB 3:12, BBKL 1:809-811. Only the basic outlinesofhis life are known, and even those only fragmentarily. ## Table of Contents Several streams converged, resulting in this project. First, Crossway asked me to contribute a chapter on Princeton on original sin in their academic line to a forthcoming volume entitled, Ruined Sinners to Reclaim. Being surprised by what I found, this led me to see the need for studying broader continuities and discontinuities between Reformed orthodoxy and "Old Princeton" theology. I thank Johnny and David Gibson for pressing me out of my comfort zone to participate in this project. Second, I served as a critical reader for Scott Cook's ThM thesis at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Scott treated shifts in defining God's attributes in nineteenth century American Presbyterian thought, sometimes contrasting authors like Hodge with earlier Reformed orthodox precedents. This led me to see once again the need for larger trajectories in the history of ideas related to figures like Hodge. As Scott pulled his research into a larger PhD project, I not only wanted to expand his research into other areas, but I wanted him on the team to write a chapter in this book, which turned into a chapter and a half, due to our common interest in the Trinity. Scott both spurred on the idea for this book and contributed much to its pages. Third, I regularly teach a course on Prolegomena and I always felt a bit hazy in my understanding of the shift on historical treatments of theology as a science, all of which seemed to hover around post-Enlightenment contexts. Astute students asking good questions pressed me to seek greater clarity and understanding on this issue, leading to my chapter on theology as a science in this volume. Fourth, C. N. Willborn, who knows far more nineteenth-century American theology than I do, introduced me to the primary Reformed authors from the time period, including many off the beaten path, roughly twenty years ago. Nick gave me food for thought, which ruminated in the back of my mind as I researched and wrote primarily on John Owen, Reformed Scholasticism, and other Reformed orthodox related themes over the past decade. He provoked in me enough interest in and familiarity with American Reformed theology to develop the seed thoughts of this present volume. Now that this book has taken shape, thanks are due to many people. First, I thank the contributors for their patience with me as a brutal editor, often adding to their already heavy workloads. All the authors worked very hard in bringing their expertise to bear on their given topics, patiently wading through my comments and often stretching themselves beyond their fields of expertise at various points. It has been a joy and blessing to work with you all. Second, editors always need critical feedback as well. This is how we learn in research and writing. John Fesko graciously lent his time as a brutal editor in his own right to give me exactly the kind of criticism on my own material in this book. John sent my chapter on Theology as a Science bleeding with comments and exclamation marks. In the end, we may not see eye to eye on some of my conclusions about Hodge's views and the reasons behind them. However, this is what has made my friendship with John so fruitful over the years. We love and respect each other as brothers and friends in the Lord, and as historians and systematic theologians. I have likely learned much more from John than he has from me over the years, but I thank him for being a diligent student of history and a friend willing to help me make my own work better more times than I can count. I dedicate this volume to him as a small token of thanks. Third, I thank Herman Selderhuis for his early interest in this project. Herman is always a pleasure to work with and a great encouragement. I am also an admirer of his own voluminous historical writing, and I have developed a greater appreciation for him in relation to how many books he edits. Fourth, thanks are due to Fred Sanders for his interest and feedback on the chapter on the Trinity. Fred has brought more clarity to the doctrine of the Trinity in recent years, both on academic and popular levels, likely than anyone else I know. Though this is not a work on systematic theology, I hope that historical studies like this one will continue to give systematic theologians food for thought by putting more big picture options on the table. Fifth, Jehona Kicaj with Brill shepherded the transition from V&R to Brill in bringing this volume to print. Jehona helped greatly in keeping the project on track and settling a final deadline for the chapters, for which I and the other authors are profoundly grateful. Lastly, I thank my wife and children, who always listen to me talk through my projects. A book like this one is far more academic and complex than many other things that I write, which are geared towards the church primarily rather than the scholarly world. Krista in particularly always makes living life in communion with the Triune God an even greater joy, and my children (Owen, Calvin, Jonathan, and Callie) take an increasing interest in my work as Krista and I grow into more adult-like friendships with them. Owen and Calvin even bravely took my Reformed Scholasticism course in 2022, which I hope opened to them a new world. At the very least, they now understand why dad worked for so many years on his Hodge book. I thank the Lord for them all, and there are no other people with whom I would rather share life, fellowship, and worship.
