The Landsmen (Lost American fiction) Martin, Peter Southern Illinois University Press ; Feffer and Simons, Lost American fiction (Carbondale, Ill.), Carbondale, 1977], ©1952
The Landsmen is a novel of Jewish-American roots. Set in the village of Golinsk in Czarist Russia at the end of the nineteenth century, it evokes life under a system of massively cruel anti-Semitism. The word “landsmen” in Yiddish means people from the same place, but in this novel it conveys the larger meaning of “brothers”—in suffering, in faith, in humanity. Peter Martin wrote the novel from the memories of the old people he knew as a boy in Brooklyn. The result is a work of fiction that is rich in a sense of time and place. The effect is bardic. Each section of the novel is narrated by one of nine characters: Yeersel, the tailor; Maisha, the religion teacher; Laib, the musician; Shim, his brother; Nochim, the dairyman; Berel, the watercarrier; Laib-Shmul, the butcher; Tzippe-Sora, the distiller; and Mottel, the outcast. Some migrated to America; some died in Golinsk. First published in 1952, *The Landsmen was the first volume of a projected trilogy, and was written to establish a sense of Jewish identity as the background for a large fictional examination of Jewish-American life. Although The Landsmen was well received and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, it was never republished. The second volume of the trilogy, The Building,* appeared in 1960. Peter Martin died in 1961.words : 135998

The Jammu fox : a biography of Maharaja Gulab Singh of Kashmir, 1792-1857 Bawa Satinder Singh Ph.d. Southern Illinois University Press ; Feffer and Simons, Carbondale, Edwardsville, ©1974
<p>This comprehensive biography depicts in depth the complex and controversial man who played a significant role in the history of northwestern India during the nineteenth century.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Described by his European contemporaries as "the Talleyrand of the East” and the "Ulysses of the hills,” Maharaja Gulab Singh was perhaps the most dexterous and successful Indian diplomat of the nineteenth century. At a time when other Indian states were falling to the British, Gulab Singh founded the kingdom of Kashmir, which survived under his heirs for over a century.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Based largely on primary sources in English, Persian, and Urdu, this new biography provides fresh insights into Gulab Singh’s motives and policies, and brings into focus his role as fiefholder, Raja, and Maharaja, and as a man, soldier, and politician. However, the book is more than a portrait of a man. It sheds light on the entire diplomatic history of northwestern India during the period.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>This big and important biography is exceptionally well written. The author’s narrative skill provides a fascinating picture of the diplomatic intrigue, sadistic tortures, the licentious activities of the Sikh army, and the economic exploitation of the common people.</p>

Industrial Relations Systems (masterworks In Industrial Relations) Professor John T. Dunlop Southern Illinois University Press ; Feffer & Simons, Inc, Masterworks in industrial relations, Carbondale (iIl.) ; Edwardsville (iIl.) London ; Amsterdam, cop. 1958
Every industrializing community creates workers and managers, whose status and interrelations need to be defined. Industrial relations are created, and are usually a complex of interrelations between managers, agencies, workers, and government, together making up a system. This pioneering work, first published in 1958 and long out of print, presents a general theory of industrial relations and seeks to provide tools of analysis. A Masterworks in Industrial Relations series book, edited by Albert A. Blum, Michigan State University.

The Wedding (Lost American Fiction) by Grace Lumpkin; with an afterword by Lillian Barnard Gilkes and a postscript by Grace Lumpkin [and textual note by Matthew J. Bruccoli] Southern Illinois University Press ; Feffer and Simons, Lost American fiction (Carbondale, Ill.), Carbondale, 1976], ©1939
Like other writers of the Great Depression, whose reputations are now being given a rehabilitative new look, Miss Lumpkin has remained known only to serious students of American literature and has been underappreciated until now, as readers of The Wedding , her third novel, will know. According to Lillian Gilkes, Miss Lumpkin deserves to be studied in college courses, along with her Southern Eudora Welty, Katherine Anne Porter, Carson McCullers, and Flannery OConnor. The Wedding is a significant addition to the small shelf of the American novel of manners. It is permanently valuable as social history, but it is also a perfectly controlled work of literary art. As in the novels of Jane Austen, nothing exciting happens in the most convincing way. The story is literally nothing but an account of the marriage of Jennie Middleton, the eldest living daughter of a ruined aristocratic family in 1909 who live by the code of the Confederacy, and Dr. Gregg, from their quarrel the night before the wedding to the description of the ceremony going off on schedule despite it.

lgli/Carroll Graham, Garrett Graham - Queer People (1976, SIU Press).pdf
Queer People (Lost American Fiction) Carroll Graham, Garrett Graham Southern Illinois University Press ; Feffer & Simons, Lost American fiction (Carbondale, Ill.), Carbondale, 1976], ©1930
A brilliantly savage story, Queer People is, according to Budd Schulberg, “a racy testament to an era as totally vanished as the civilization of the Aztecs,” and if not the Hollywood novel is “at least a truly seminal work.” Today’s readers will recognize in this long-forgotten Hollywood novel the seeds of three longer-lived ones, The Day of the Locust, What Makes Sammy Run?, and The Last Tycoon. They may also recognize Whitey, the hero of the Grahams’ novel, as a forerunner of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Pat Hobby. The central figure in the novel is an archetypal newspaper reporter who drifts to Hollywood. Whitey discovers the social microcosm of the studio-people, and finds himself in his element. He penetrates strange places and encounters queer people—the story conference, the three-day party, the titans and the moguls. When a murder ends his interlude he leaves Hollywood as casually as he discovered it. Originally published in 1930 Queer People was a scandalous roman à clef, irreverent to the “industry,” and totally amoral—qualities lacking in later Hollywood fiction. Hence it is at once an important social document and an exciting original work.

Mr. and Mrs. Haddock Abroad (Lost American Fiction) by Donald Ogden Stewart; with an afterword by the author; ill. by Herb Roth Southern Illinois University Press ; Feffer and Simons, Lost American fiction (Carbondale, Ill.), Carbondale, 1975], ©1924
<p>In an Afterword written for this new edition, Donald Ogden Stewart recalls the circumstances surrounding the writing of this book. By 1924 George H. Doran Company had published three books by Stewart. In the spring of 1924 he went to Paris and resided at the Hotel Montparnasse on the Left Bank. There his thoughts turned to another book, something on the theme of Alice in Wonderland or even the antics of the Marx Brothers, he thought. There emerged Mr. and Mrs. Haddock and their daughter Mildred.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>As for Mr. and Mrs. Haddock and their daughter Mildred, if they had informed Donald Ogden Stewart, author of <i>Perfect Behavior</i> (a book on etiquette), of their intentions of going abroad there would not have been a book about their imperfect behavior. And Mr. Stewart would have missed out on the opportunity of setting down events—as, if, and when—occurring to this Midwestern American family.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>But <i>Mr and Mrs Haddock Abroad</i> is more than a period piece or even a perfect example of Donald Ogden Stewart’s humor; it is the classic story of a Midwestern family traveling abroad for the first time, whose broad similarities of experience to that of many another American family provides the perfect parody.</p>

Traditional Grammar, Revised Edition: A Short Summary Jewell Anne Friend Southern Illinois University Press ; Feffer and Simons ; [Distributed by Transatlantic Book Service, Revised ed, Carbondale, London, [London, 1976
Writing in response to an observed need for a short, simplified summary of traditional (or classical) grammar, Jewell A. Friend in this exceptionally lucid presentation dispels many of the mysteries and misconceptions surrounding a complex subject. The book provides students with a thorough grounding for further inquiry into modern descriptive linguistic analysis of present-day American English, and makes clear the distinctions between the typical schoolroom grammars and the scientifically developed methodologies of the classical linguists. Dividing her analysis into two main parts, Ms. Friend provides a brief description of classical grammar and an explanation of the traditionalist concepts of meaning, sentence types, and clauses. In the second part, she gives descriptions of nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, articles, and conjunctions. Numerous examples and exercises to test the students grasp of the material presented are included throughout, and an exceptionally detailed glossary of linguistic terms is furnished. This brief volume which concisely presents the principles of traditional grammar will prove especially useful both as text and reference to students and teachers.

Hugh Gaine: A Colonial Printer-Editor's Odyssey to Loyalism (New Horizons in Journalism) Associate Professor Alfred Lawrence Lorenz Ph.D.; Howard Rusk Long Southern Illinois University Press Feffer & Simons, Carbondale & Edwardsville Southern Illinois University Press; London & Amsterdam Feffer & Simons, 1972
Hugh Gaine was a Colonial New York printer who in the second year of the American Revolution first allied his press to the American cause, then deserted to publish his newspaper for the British. This first book-length biography of Gaine contributes substantially to our knowledge of journalism in the Colonial period and provides fascinating insights into life in Revolutionary times. Gaine was more than a turncoat American, Lorenz shows. From his reading of the files of Gaines newspaper, from unpublished material, and from a wide variety of printed sources, Lorenz has pieced together this study of economic and political conservatism, religious belief, and social class feelings which made Gaine a prototypal Loyalist to the British cause, though a citizen, or at least a resident, of the United States, to the end of his days, in 1807.

The Fiction of Katherine Mansfield (A Chicago Classic) with a preface by Harry T. Moore Carbondale, Ill. : Feffer & Simons, Southern Illinois University Press, Crosscurrents: modern critiques, Carbondale, London, United Kingdom, 1971
A foremost practitioner of English short-story writing, the wife of John Middleton Murry, and a gifted writer of rare psychological insight, Katherine Mansfield achieved literary distinction which still inspires critical interest nearly fifty years after her death in 1923 at the age of thirty-five. The continuing vitality of her writing and the depth of her insight into the human condition is here brilliantly assessed by Marvin Magalaner.

Kingship and Common Profit in Gower's Confession Amantis (Literary Structures) by Russell A. Peck; foreword by John Gardner Southern Illinois University Press ; Feffer and Simons, Literary structures, Carbondale [etc.], London [etc, 1978
<p><i>Confessio Amantis</i>, the principal work in English by John Gower, friend of Chaucer, by whom he was influenced, has always been read as a conventional poem about the seven deadly sins. Here, paying particular attention to the poem’s language and style, Peck gives a brilliant new reinterpretation which not only illuminates the poem’s elegant beauty but provides a profound moral purpose as well.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Gower’s <i>Confessio,</i> according to Peck, is a restatement of late fourteenth-century ideas of good and bad behavior, and is designed to illuminate and reshape the minds and hearts of men.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Peck sees the concepts of kingship'-the governance of souls as well as kingdoms-and common profit'-the mutual enhancement of such kingdoms-as the poem’s unifying ideas. Peck’s discussion further shows how the various tales hold together and support the poem’s loose plot and the poet’s strongly moral intention.</p>

Rare The Poorhouse Subsidized Housing in Chicago 1895-1976 HC 0809308312 D Bowly Jr by Devereux Bowly, Jr Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, Southern Illinois University Press, Carbondale, 2012
Chicago seems an ideal environment for public housing because of the city's relatively young age among major cities and well-deserved reputation for technology, innovation, and architecture. Yet The Poorhouse: Subsidized Housing in Chicago shows that the city's experience on the whole has been a negative one, raising serious questions about the nature of subsidized housing and whether we should have it and, if so, in what form. Bowly, a native of the city, provides a detailed examination of subsidized housing in the nation's third-largest city. Now in its second edition, The Poorhouse looks at the history of public housing and subsidized housing in Chicago from 1895 to the present day. Five new chapters that cover the decline and federal takeover of the Chicago Housing Authority, and its more recent “transformation,” which involved the demolition of the CHA family high-rise buildings and in some cases their replacement with low-risemixed income housing on the same sites. Fifty new photos supplement this edition. Certificate of Excellence from the Illinois State Historical Society, 2013
