Solar cooking innovations, their appropriateness, and viability Abhishek Saxena & Brian Norton & Varun Goel & Desh Bandhu Singh Springer Berlin Heidelberg, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2022
The successful use of solar energy for cooking requires the systems adopted not only to have technical attributes that con-veniently address specific cooking requirements but also are socially and economically acceptable to its end-users. When displacing cooking fuels used in developing countries, solar cooking can lead to (i) improved health in children and women, (ii) less local forest degradation, (iii) less local pollution, and (iv) lower contributions to global greenhouse gas emissions. The diverse range of thermal and photovoltaic solar cooking systems available, or under development, in different regions of the world is discussed in the present work. Particular attention is given to the social, cultural, and economic factors that have limited adoption of solar cookers. Technical developments that address these limitations are shown to only be effective when they facilitate traditional ways of cooking particular foods in and at desired times in specific climates.https://doi.org/10.1007/s11356-022-21670-4

Upwind and High-Resolution Schemes [electronic resource] Hussaini, M. Yousuff, Leer, Bram, Rosendale, John Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1997
One of the major achievements in computational fluid dynamics has been the development of numerical methods for simulating compressible flows. These methods combine higher-order accuracy in smooth regions, with sharp, oscillation-free representation of embedded shocks, and are now known as \"high-resolution schemes\". This volume collects in one place many of the most significant papers in the development of high-resolution schemes as occurred at ICASE, together with introductions from the editors, written from the modern vantage point. Chapter I covers the early development of approximate Riemann solvers in the context of monotonic schemes. Chapter II continues with papers dealing with second-order total-variation-diminishing (TVD) schemes. Chapter III presents papers which show the historical development of total-variation-bounded (TVB) schemes at ICASE. Finally, Chapter IV collects papers on inherently multidimensional schemes, which preserve the attractive features of their one-dimensional predecessors.Content: Front Matter....Pages I-XICASE and the History of High-Resolution Schemes....Pages 1-7A Brief Introduction to High-Resolution Schemes....Pages 9-28Front Matter....Pages 29-31On The Relation Between The Upwind-Differencing Schemes Of Godunov, Engquist—Osher and Roe....Pages 33-52On Upstream Differencing and Godunov-Type Schemes for Hyperbolic Conservation Laws....Pages 53-79Flux-Vector Splitting for the Euler Equation....Pages 80-89Front Matter....Pages 91-93A Comparative Study of Computational Methods in Cosmic Gas Dynamics....Pages 95-103High Resolution Schemes and the Entropy Condition....Pages 104-133Convergence of Generalized Muscl Schemes....Pages 134-148A Simplified TVD Finite Difference Scheme via Artificial Viscosity....Pages 149-166On Central-Difference and Upwind Schemes....Pages 167-181Front Matter....Pages 183-186Uniformly High-Order Accurate...

Applied Structural Mechanics [electronic resource] : Fundamentals of Elasticity, Load-Bearing Structures, Structural Optimization Eschenauer, H, Olhoff, N, Schnell, W Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1 edition, 1997
In view of the growing importance of product liability and the demand for fulfillment of extreme specifications for new products, this book provides the basic tools for establishing model equations in structural mechanics. Additionally, it illustrates the transition and interrelation between structural mechanics and structural optimization. Nowadays, this new direction is extremely important for more efficiency in the design process. The book is divided into four parts covering the fundamentals of elasticity, plane and curved load-bearing structures and structural optimization. Each part contains numerous problems and solutions, which will provide the student with the basic tools from the field of elasticity theory and assist the professional engineer in solving problems. Kalman Filtering [electronic resource] : with Real-Time Applications Chui, Charles K, Chen, Guanrong Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg, Springer series in information sciences ;, 17, 3rd ed., 1999
Kalman Filtering with Real-Time Applications presents a thorough discussion of the mathematical theory and computational schemes of Kalman filtering. The filtering algorithms are derived via different approaches, including a direct method consisting of a series of elementary steps, and an indirect method based on innovation projection. Other topics include Kalman filtering for systems with correlated noise or colored noise, limiting Kalman filtering for time-invariant systems, extended Kalman filtering for nonlinear systems, interval Kalman filtering for uncertain systems, and wavelet Kalman filtering for multiresolution analysis of random signals. The last two topics are new additions to this third edition. Most filtering algorithms are illustrated by using simplified radar tracking examples. The style of the book is informal, and the mathematics is elementary but rigorous. The text is self-contained, suitable for self-study, and accessible to all readers with a minimum knowledge of linear algebra, probability theory, and system engineering.Content: Front Matter....Pages I-XIVPreliminaries....Pages 1-19Kalman Filter: An Elementary Approach....Pages 20-32Orthogonal Projection and Kalman Filter....Pages 33-48Correlated System and Measurement Noise Processes....Pages 49-66Colored Noise....Pages 67-76Limiting Kalman Filter....Pages 77-96Sequential and Square-Root Algorithms....Pages 97-107Extended Kalman Filter and System Identification....Pages 108-130Decoupling of Filtering Equations....Pages 131-142Kalman Filtering for Interval Systems....Pages 143-163Wavelet Kalman Filtering....Pages 164-177Notes....Pages 178-190Back Matter....Pages 191-230, Series: Springer Series in Information Sciences 17, Preliminaries -- Kalman Filter, an Elementary Approach -- Orthogonal Projection and Kalman Filter -- Correlated System and Measurement Noise Processes -- Colored Noise -- Limiting

Quantum Ising Phases and Transitions in Transverse Ising Models [Ressource électronique] Chakrabarti, Bikas K.. Auteur, Dutta, Amit, Sen, Parongama Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Springer e-books, 1996
Investigations into the zero-temperature phases in various frustrated and random Ising models in a transverse or tunnelling field have caught attention very recently in the context of quantum magnetisation of glasses and other frustrated systems. This book gives a detailed discussion of the various theoretical techniques developed for the study of transverse Ising models and of the results of these studies with regular and random frustration, dilution, randomness, etc. Recent developments in the studies on their (quantum) relaxational dynamics, such as in quantum hysteresis, are also treated. The detailed presentation of original results and the reviews given here are expected to inspire further research in the exciting field of quantum many-body systems with randomness and frustration.Content: Front Matter....Pages I-XIntroduction....Pages 1-16Transverse Ising Chain (Pure System)....Pages 17-49Transverse Ising System in Higher Dimensions (Pure Systems)....Pages 50-67ANNNI Model in Transverse Field....Pages 68-98Dilute and Random Transverse Ising Systems....Pages 99-117Transverse Ising Spin Glass and Random Field Systems....Pages 118-161Dynamics of Quantum Ising Systems....Pages 162-187Related Models....Pages 188-203Back Matter....Pages 204-204, Series: Lecture Notes in Physics Monographs 41, L'accès complet au document est possible pour les usagers de tous les établissements publics français (situés ou non sur le territoire français) ayant des missions d'enseignement supérieur et/ou de recherche, des établissements d'enseignement supérieur privés, des bibliothèques publiques

Asymptotic Methods for the Fokker-Planck Equation and the Exit Problem in Applications [electronic resource] Grasman, Johan, Herwaarden, Onno A Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 1999
Asymptotic methods are of great importance for practical applications, especially in dealing with boundary value problems for small stochastic perturbations. This book deals with nonlinear dynamical systems perturbed by noise. It addresses problems in which noise leads to qualitative changes, escape from the attraction domain, or extinction in population dynamics. The most likely exit point and expected escape time are determined with singular perturbation methods for the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. The authors indicate how their techniques relate to the Itô calculus applied to the Langevin equation. The book will be useful to researchers and graduate students., Series: Springer Series in Synergetics, Issue: 14, Asymptotic methods are of great importance for practical applications, especially in dealing with boundary value problems for small stochastic perturbations. In 1988, for the first time, the two international conferences AAECC-6 and ISSAC'88 (International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation, see Lecture Notes in Computer Science 358) have taken place as a Joint Conference in Rome, July 4-8, 1988. The topics of the two conferences are in fact widely related to each other and the Joint Conference presented a good occasion for the two research communities to meet and share scientific experiences and results. The proceedings of the AAECC-6 are included in this volume. The main topics are: Applied Algebra, Theory and Application of Error-Correcting Codes, Cryptography, Complexity, Algebra Based Methods and Applications in Symbolic Computing and Computer Algebra, and Algebraic Methods and Applications for Advanced Information Processing. Twelve invited papers on subjects of common interest for the two conferences are divided between this volume and the succeeding Lecture Notes volume devoted to ISSACC'88. The proceedings of the 5th conference are published as Vol. 356 of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science., Series: LNCS0357, Issue: 2009 new, Edition: 1

Quantum Electron Liquids and High-TcSuperconductivity [Ressource électronique] González, José. Auteur, Martín-Delgado, Miguel A, Sierra, Germán, Vozmediano, Angeles H Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Springer e-books, 1995
The goal of these courses is to give the non-specialist an introduction to some old and new ideas in the field of strongly correlated systems, in particular the problems posed by the high-Tc superconducting materials. The starting viewpoint to address the problem of strongly correlated fermion systems and related issues of modern condensed matter physics is the renormalization group approach applied to quantum field theory and statistical physics. The authors review the essentials of the Landau Fermi liquid theory, they discuss the 1d electron systems and the Luttinger liquid concept using different techniques: the renormalization group approach, bosonization, and the correspondence between exactly solvable lattice models and continuum field theory. Finally they present the basic phenomenology of the high-Tc compounds and different theoretical models to explain their behaviour.Content: Front Matter....Pages I-XFront Matter....Pages 1-1Fermi Liquid in D ? 2....Pages 3-29Effective Actions and the Renormalization Group....Pages 31-67Front Matter....Pages 69-69Electronic Systems in d = 1....Pages 71-86Bosonization. Verification and validation of complex systems : human factors issues Wise, John A., 1944- editor, Hopkin, V. David, editor, Stager, Paul, editor, NATO Advanced Study Institute and Validation of Complex and Integrated Human-Machine Systems (1992 : Vimeiro, Lisbon, Portugal), North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Scientific Springer Berlin Heidelberg, NATO ASI series. Series F, Computer and System sciences ;, vol. 110, NATO ASI se, 1993
Despite its increasing importance, the verification and validation of the human-machine interface is perhaps the most overlooked aspect of system development. Although much has been written about the design and developmentprocess, very little organized information is available on how to verifyand validate highly complex and highly coupled dynamic systems. Inability toevaluate such systems adequately may become the limiting factor in our ability to employ systems that our technology and knowledge allow us to design. This volume, based on a NATO Advanced Science Institute held in 1992, is designed to provide guidance for the verification and validation of all highly complex and coupled systems. Air traffic control isused an an example to ensure that the theory is described in terms that will allow its implementation, but the results can be applied to all complex and coupled systems. The volume presents the knowledge and theory ina format that will allow readers from a wide variety of backgrounds to apply it to the systems for which they are responsible. The emphasis is on domains where significant advances have been made in the methods of identifying potential problems and in new testing methods and tools. Also emphasized are techniques to identify the assumptions on which a system is built and to spot their weaknesses.Content: Front Matter....Pages I-6Front Matter....Pages 7-7Verification and Validation: Concepts, Issues, and Applications....Pages 9-33Resilience Theory and System Evaluation....Pages 35-60On The Future Of Hybrid Human-Machine Systems....Pages 61-85Basic Considerations in Verification and Validation....Pages 87-95Front Matter....Pages 97-97Validation in Complex Systems: Behavioral Issues....Pages 99-114Defining Human-Centered System Issues for Verifying and Validating Air Traffic Control Systems....Pages 115-129Front Matter....Pages 131-131Evaluating the Impact of New Technology...
