lgli/Moral Fictionalism and Religious Fictionalism - Richard Joyce;Stuart Brock; & STUART BROCK.epub
Moral Fictionalism and Religious Fictionalism Richard Joyce (editor), Stuart Brock (editor) Oxford University Press USA, US, 2024
Atheism is a familiar kind of skepticism about religion. Moral error theory is an analogous kind of skepticism about morality, though less well known outside academic circles. Both kinds of skeptic face a “what next?” question: If we have decided that the subject matter (religion/morality) is mistaken, then what should we do with this way of talking and thinking? The natural assumption is that we should abolish the mistaken topic, just as we previously eliminated talk of, say, bodily humors and unicorns. The fictionalist, however, offers a less obvious recommendation. According to the fictionalist, engaging in the topic in question provides pragmatic benefits that do not depend on its truth-in a way roughly analogous to engaging with a novel or a movie. The religious fictionalist maintains that even if we were atheists, we should carry on talking, thinking, and acting as if religion were true. The moral fictionalist maintains a similar view regarding moral talk, thought, and action. Both forms of fictionalism face serious challenges. Some challenges can be levelled at either form of fictionalism (or at any form of fictionalism), whereas others are problems unique to moral fictionalism or to religious fictionalism. There are important questions to be asked about the relationship between these two kinds of fictionalism. Could moral fictionalism be plausible even if religious fictionalism is not (or vice versa)? This is a volume of thirteen previously unpublished papers on the topics of religious fictionalism, moral fictionalism, and the relation between these views.

Medicine, Religion, and Magic in Early Stuart England: Richard Napier's Medical Practice (Magic in History) Ofer Hadass The Pennsylvania State University Press, Paperback, 2019
The astrologer-physician Richard Napier (1559-1634) was not only a man of practical science and medicine but also a master of occult arts and a devout parish rector who purportedly held conversations with angels. This new interpretation of Napier reveals him to be a coherent and methodical man whose burning desire for certain, true knowledge contributed to the contemporary venture of putting existing knowledge to useful ends. Originally trained in theology and ordained as an Anglican priest, Napier later studied astrological medicine and combined astrology, religious thought, and image and ritual magic in his medical work. Ofer Hadass draws on a remarkable archive of Napier's medical cases and religious writings--including the interviews he claimed to have held with angels--to show how Napier's seemingly inconsistent approaches were rooted in an inclusive and coherent worldview, combining equal respect for ancient authority and for experientially derived knowledge. Napier's endeavors exemplify the fruitful relationship between religion and science that offered a well-founded alternative to the rising mechanistic explanation of nature at the time. Carefully researched and compellingly told, Medicine, Religion, and Magic in Early Stuart England is an insightful exploration of one of the most fascinating figures at the intersection of medicine, magic, and theology in early modern England and of the healing methods employed by physicians of the era.

nexusstc/Best Practices in Accelerated Construction Techniques/646b16a80ff136c71d84a73317406bae.pdf
Best Practices in Accelerated Construction Techniques Blanchard, Brian A; Bohuslav, Thomas R; Schneider, Christopher; Anderson, Stuart; Schexnayder, Cliff J; DeWitt, Steven D; Raymond, George; Sheffield, Richard NCHRP Project 20-68A, Scan 07-02, 2009
This scan focused on construction operations and management practices to accelerate the delivery of construction projects. Visiting five states from the East to West Coasts, the scan team sought information from DOT staff and contractors on practices that accelerate project construction. The team visited with transportation leaders in: 1. Jacksonville and Pensacola, Florida; 2. Birmingham and Montgomery, Alabama; 3. Houston, Texas; 4. Salt Lake City, Utah; and 5. Sacramento and Oakland, California. Transportation agency representatives, contractors, suppliers, and engineering consultants having accelerated project experience shared their viewpoints and knowledge at meetings with the scan team. The team then evaluated these practices for their potential application by other transportation agencies. The team found that, for every project examined, the primary factor leading to success was a spirited effort of partnership and collaboration between the DOT and the contractor, together with a supportive design and/or design process.

nexusstc/A Roman Roadside Settlement at Healam Bridge: The Iron Age to Early Medieval Evidence. Vol. 1/915cc6bd15faceba7e981f49b20fdf07.pdf
A Roman Roadside Settlement at Healam Bridge: The Iron Age to Early Medieval Evidence. Vol. 1 1 Cath Ambrey, David Fell, Richard Fraser, Stuart Ross, Greg Speed, Philip N. Wood Northern Archaeological Associates Ltd, Northern Archaeological Associates Monograph Series, 3, 1, 2017
Vol. 1. Archaeological narrative, environmental evidence, and human remains. Evidence for pre-Roman Iron Age through to post-Roman activity was revealed during a major programme of archaeological investigation undertaken as an integral part of the construction scheme to widen the A1 trunk road between Dishforth and Leeming Bar in North Yorkshire. Significant archaeological remains were encountered at Healam Bridge, a scheduled Roman settlement located on Dere Street Roman road, midway between the walled towns of Isuriam Brigantum and Cataractonium (the modern villages of Aldborough and Catterick). This two-volume set presents the results and discussion of the excavations and analysis of the environmental and human remains (Volume 1), and the analysis of the artefactual assemblages (Volume 2). Evidence from Healam Bridge indicates activity dating from the early 2nd century AD into the Anglo-Saxon period. The location of the site astride the main Roman route to the north of England and Scotland was reflected in the wide range of pottery and other finds recovered, and activities such as iron-smithing are likely to have served the passing trade as much as the local community. The extensive animal bone assemblage suggested that horse, possibly mule, breeding was a significant activity at Healam Bridge throughout the Roman period.

The 2nd edition of All Minus One published by Heterodox Academy: John Stuart Mill's On Liberty--just the 2nd chapter--made accessible for the 21st century, with gorgeous illustrations. Reeves (a biographer of Mill) and Haidt (a social psychologist) summarize Mill's three timeless arguments for free speech and the value of viewpoint diversity. They then reduce the text to half its original length, allowing Mill's best arguments and metaphors to shine. Artist Dave Cicirelli illustrates those metaphors to amplify their intuitive power. Ideal for use in college courses, or in any organization in which people would benefit from productive disagreement.

Unclassical Traditions: Volume I, Alternatives to the Classical Past in Late Antiquity (Cambridge Classical Journal Supplements) Christopher Kelley, Richard Flower, Michael Stuart Williams (Editors) Cambridge Philological Society, Casemate Publishers & Book Distributors, LLC, Cambridge, 2010
Unclassical Traditions: Alternatives to the Classical Past in Late Antiquity is the first of two collections of essays by leading scholars discussing the nature and extent of the late-antique engagement with its classical heritage. This issue has long been at the heart of modern historical debate and, as this volume demonstrates, it was no less a matter of concern among authors and audiences in the period itself. From the Chronological Tables of Eusebius of Caesarea to the Brevarium of Festus and from the imperial panegyric to the Byzantine liturgy, eight papers explore how the persistence, dominance and normative nature of the classical tradition in its various forms could be negotiated, undermined, ironized or even flatly denied. Whether in the hands of Christian bishops such as Ambrose of Milan or Basil of Caesarea, or in the poetry of Ausonius or in the lives of the saints, many central aspects of late-antique culture here emerge as the product of a combination of authoritatively classical and avowedly unclassical traditions.

Wagner: The Terrible Man and His Truthful Art: The 1998 Larkin-Stuart Lectures (The Larkin-Stuart Lectures) M. Owen Lee University of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division, The 1998 Larkin-Stuart lectures, Toronto, 1999
How is it possible for a seriously flawed human being to produce art that is good, true, and beautiful? Why is the art of Richard Wagner, a very imperfect man, important and even indispensable to us?In this volume, Father Owen Lee ventures an answer to those questions by way of a figure in Sophocles -- the hero Philoctetes Gifted by his god with a bow that would always shoot true to the mark, and indispensable to his fellow Greeks, he was marked by the same god with an odious WoUnd that made him hateful and hated. Sophocles's powerful insight is that those blessed by the gods and indispensable to men are visited as well with great vulnerability and suffering.Wagner: The Terrible Man and His Truthful Art traces some of Wagner's extraordinary influence for good and ill on a century of art and politics - on Eliot and Proust as well as on Adolf Hitler -- and discusses in detail Wagner's Tannhauser, the work in which the composer first dramatised the Faustian struggle of a creative artist in whom 'two souls dwell.' In the course of this penetrating study, Father Lee argues that Wagner's ambivalent art is indispensable to us, life-enhancing and ultimately healing.

lgli/How to Measure Anything in Cybersecurity Risk - Douglas W. Hubbard & Richard Seiersen - kindle.epub
How to Measure Anything in Cybersecurity Risk Douglas W. Hubbard, Richard Seiersen, Daniel E. Geer Jr., Stuart McClure, James Patrick Cronin John Wiley & Sons, Incorporated, 1, PS, 2016
A ground shaking exposé on the failure of popular cyber risk management methods How to Measure Anything in Cybersecurity Risk exposes the shortcomings of current "risk management" practices, and offers a series of improvement techniques that help you fill the holes and ramp up security. In his bestselling book How to Measure Anything , author Douglas W. Hubbard opened the business world's eyes to the critical need for better measurement. This book expands upon that premise and draws from The Failure of Risk Management to sound the alarm in the cybersecurity realm. Some of the field's premier risk management approaches actually create more risk than they mitigate, and questionable methods have been duplicated across industries and embedded in the products accepted as gospel. This book sheds light on these blatant risks, and provides alternate techniques that can help improve your current situation. You'll also learn which approaches are too risky to save, and are actually more damaging than a total lack of any security. Dangerous risk management methods abound; there is no industry more critically in need of solutions than cybersecurity. This book provides solutions where they exist, and advises when to change tracks entirely. Discover the shortcomings of cybersecurity's "best practices" Learn which risk management approaches actually create risk Improve your current practices with practical alterations Learn which methods are beyond saving, and worse than doing nothing Insightful and enlightening, this book will inspire a closer examination of your company's own risk management practices in the context of cybersecurity. The end goal is airtight data protection, so finding cracks in the vault is a positive thing—as long as you get there before the bad guys do. How to Measure Anything in Cybersecurity Risk is your guide to more robust protection through better quantitative processes, approaches, and techniques.

Gentry culture and the politics of religion: Cheshire on the eve of civil war (Politics, Culture and Society in Early Modern Britain) Richard Cust; Peter Lake Manchester University Press, Manchester University Press, Manchester, 2020
This book revisits the county study as a way of understanding the dynamics of civil war in England during the 1640s. It explores gentry culture and the extent to which early Stuart Cheshire could be said to be a ‘county community’. It also investigates how the county’s governing elite and puritan religious establishment responded to highly polarising interventions by the central government and Laudian ecclesiastical authorities during Charles I’s Personal Rule. The second half of the book provides a rich and detailed analysis of petitioning movements and side-taking in Cheshire in 1641–2. An important contribution to understanding the local origins and outbreak of civil war in England, the book will be of interest to all students and scholars studying the English revolution.

A companion series to the acclaimed Word Biblical Commentary. Finding the great themes of the books of the Bible is essential to the study of God's Word and to the preaching and teaching of its truths. These themes and ideas are often like precious gems: they lie beneath the surface and can only be discovered with some difficulty. While commentaries are useful for helping readers understand the content of a verse or chapter, they are not usually designed to help the reader to trace important subjects systematically within a given book a Scripture. The Word Biblical Themes series helps readers discover the important themes of a book of the Bible. This series distills the theological essence of a given book of Scripture and serves it up in ways that enrich the preaching, teaching, worship, and discipleship of God's people. Volumes in this series: Written by top biblical scholars Feature authors who wrote on the same book of the Bible for the Word Biblical Commentary series Distill deep and focused study on a biblical book into the most important themes and practical applications of them Give reader's an ability to see the "big picture" of a book of the Bible by understanding what topics and concerns were most important to the biblical writers Help address pressing issues in the church today by showing readers see how the biblical writers approached similar issues in their day Ideal for sermon preparation and for other teaching in the church Volumes in the Word Biblical Themes: 15-Volume Set include: Exodus by John I. Durham Joshua by Trent C. Butler 1 and 2 Kings by T. R. Hobbs 1 and 2 Chronicles by Roddy L. Braun Psalms by Leslie C. Allen Isaiah by John D. W. John Dee: scientist, geographer, astrologer and secret agent to Elizabeth I Richard Deacon Frederick Muller, 1968
Dustwrapper blurb: "John Dee was an authority on mathematics, navigation, astronomy and optics, as well as being Astrologer Royal to Elizabeth I. In the eyes of many of his contemporaries he was also a charlatan, imposter and dabbler in Black Magic. Here, Richard Deacon tries to balance the record by revealing the many gifts of this remarkable scholar and the patriotic service he gave his country. It is a difficult task: the problem with John Dee lies not so much in relating what he did but in interpreting his actions and explaining his motives. For Dee thought and often wrote in the strange language of the Cabbalists and developed the Enochian Alphabet to create a secret code of his own. Among many things, Deacon examines the theory that Dee used this code, as well as the “angelic visions” he claimed were seen by his assistant, Edward Kelley, as a cover for espionage and concealing secret information. Certainly it seems that John Dee was a roving secret agent of genius who won his way into the confidence of the crowned heads of Europe and helped Elizabeth thwart the Spanish Armada. The life of John Dee is a story of extraordinary enterprise, and is compiled with the same resourceful authenticity that made the author’s 'Madoc' and the Discovery of America' such a well-received work."

Fisher; Vladimir Zwass; Craig W. Fisher; Richard Y. Wang Taylor & Francis Group, Advances in management information systems, v. 1, Armonk, N.Y. ; London, England, ©2005
Organizations today have access to vast stores of data that come in a wide variety of forms and may be stored in places ranging from file cabinets to databases, and from library shelves to the Internet. The enormous growth in the quantity of data, however, has brought with it growing problems with the quality of information, further complicated by the struggles many organizations are experiencing as they try to improve their systems for knowledge management and organizational memory. Failure to manage information properly, or inaccurate data, costs businesses billions of dollars each year. This volume presents cutting-edge research on information quality. Part I seeks to understand how data can be measured and evaluated for quality. Part II deals with the problem of ensuring quality while processing data into information a company can use. Part III presents case studies, while Part IV explores organizational issues related to information quality. Part V addresses issues in information quality education.

nexusstc/Health Care Policy and Opinion in the United States and Canada/a20db0c717f28ad589f542fa1ba8f749.epub
Health Care Policy and Opinion in the United States and Canada Richard Nadeau; Éric Bélanger; François Pétry (Professor of political science); Stuart Neil Soroka; Antonia Maioni Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Routledge Studies in Governance and Public Policy, Florence, 2014
Heated debate surrounds the topic of health care in both the US and in Canada. In each country, these debates are based in some measure on perceptions about health care in their neighboring country. The perceptions held by Canadians about the US health care system, or those held by Americans about Canada, end up having significant impact on health policy makers in both countries. Health Care Policy and Opinion in the United States and Canada examines these perceptions and their effects using an extensive cross-national survey made up of two public opinion polls of over 3,500 respondents from the US and Canada. The book first develops a rigorous and detailed explanation of the factors that contribute to levels of satisfaction among Americans and Canadians with respect to their health care systems. It then attempts to study the perceptions of Canadians vis-à-vis the US health care system as well as the perception of Americans toward Canada's health care system. The authors examine how these perceptions impact health policy makers, and show how the survey results indicate remarkable similarities in the opinions expressed by Americans and Canadians toward the problems in the health care system, heralding perhaps a measure of convergence in the future. The authors present how perceptions on health care indicate elements of convergence or divergence between the views of Canadians and Americans, and discuss how these citizen opinions should inform health care policy change in both countries in the near future. This book should generate interest in scholars of health care, public opinion, and comparative studies of social policies and public opinion.

The essays in this volume, by many of the leading scholars of the period, revisit many of the important issues during the period from the Henrician Reformation to the Glorious Revolution: theology, political structures, the relationship of theology and secular ideologies, and the Civil War. Topics include Puritan networks and nomenclature in England and in the New World; examinations of the changing theology of the Church in the century after the Reformation; the evolving relationship of art and protestantism; the providentialist thinking of Charles I; the operation of the penal laws against Catholics; and protestantism in the localities of Yorkshire and Norwich. Introducing Critical Theory (Introducing...(Totem)) Stuart Sim (text) and Borin Van Loon (illustrations); edited by Richard Appignanesi Totem Books, 1997
scanned copy of archive materialsThe last few decades have seen a veritable explosion in the production of critical theory. Deconstructionists, poststructuralists, postmodernists, second-wave feminists, new historicists, cultural materialists, postcolonialists, black critics and queer theorists, among a host of others, all vie for our attention. Introducing Critical Theory provides a route through this jungle. It puts into context recent developments by situating them within the longer-term tradition of critical analysis - back to the rise of Marxism. Special attention is paid to recurrent themes and concerns that have preoccupied a century of critical theoretical activity.
