m history of Greek mercenaries is chiefly the story of the transi-tion of Hellenic warfare from its primitive and unskilled beginningsto its developed and organized conclusion. The typical Greeksoldier of the fifth and earlier centuries was only an amateur in war.The mercenary was a professional; and ultimately the professionalousted the amateur from all important warfare. But before thePeloponnesian war the Greek cities had no considerable experienceof long campaigns or distant expeditions. Their warfare consistedmainly of border feuds on a larger or smaller scale. In any battlecitizens might be called on to fight according to their standing intheir city as cavalry,heavy infantry,or skirmishers. Consequently,every one had some acquaintance with warfare,a few provedthemselves efficient in it, but none devoted themselves entirely tothe study and practice of it. The mercenary scarcely existed excepton foreign service.In spite of this elementary character of Greek warfare theirsoldiers were often superior to those of the rest of the world, andthis superiority produced a demand for their professional servicesabroad.This was specially to be noted in Egypt,where under theSaite dynasty Greek soldiers were greatly used as mercenaries.The reason was that the heavy armour of the hoplite representedan improvement on any other equipment available, and it waseasier to introduce soldiers accustomed to its use than for thenatives to discard their traditional armour.

My relatively short and unpretentious Einführung in die wellenmechanik will be replaced by a treatise in three volumes, each work complete in itself, the first of which is nowpublished."--Pref.The general plan of the Einführung in die wellenmechanik was preserved inasmuch as the first volume (replacing to some extent the first chapter of the German book) gives a general survey of the whole subject, or a first approach to it, using only elementary mathematics. As can be seen from the Contents, this first volume is fairly complete in itself, covering—although perhaps in asomewhat superficial way—the entire field of wave mechanics and of the new quantum.The main object of the second volume is the development of the mathematical ideas which form the most general and most adequate expression of the physical principles embodied in the new mechanics. After a review of the correspondence between the new mechanics and classical mechanics, it will give a thorough presentation of the transformation theory and develop upon this basis the perturbation theory, with some illustrations. This will be followed by a relativistic refinement of the general theory, the investigation of the spin of the electron, and finally, by extensions to problems of many particles and of quantum electrodynamics.The third volume will give a systematic treatment of various special problems connected with the structure of matter (complex atom, molecules, crystals) and with the radiative and non-radiative interaction between material particles or bodies (collision phenomena, optical effects, and so on).
