lgli/St. Thomas of Aquin - Summa Contra Gentiles (University of Notre Dame Press).epub
Summa Contra Gentiles, 2: Book Two: Creation (v. 2) St. Thomas of Aquin University of Notre Dame Press, Summa Contra Gentiles #3.10
Book Two of the Summa Contra Gentiles series examines God's freedom in creation, his power as creator of all things, and the nature of man, particularly the unity of soul and body within man.The Summa Contra Gentiles is not merely the only complete summary of Christian doctrine that St. Thomas has written, but also a creative and even revolutionary work of Christian apologetics composed at the precise moment when Christian thought needed to be intellectually creative in order to master and assimilate the intelligence and wisdom of the Greeks and the Arabs. In the Summa Aquinas works to save and purify the thought of the Greeks and the Arabs in the higher light of Christian Revelation, confident that all that had been rational in the ancient philosophers and their followers would become more rational within Christianity.Book 1 of the Summa deals with God; Book 3, Providence; and Book 4, Salvation.

Notre-dame cathedral of Amiens - The power of change in gothic (Iconography) 3 murray stephen cambrdge university press, 3, 1996
3rd part of a split up volume: iconography Notre-Dame, Cathedral of Amiens: The Power of Change in Gothic is a compre- hensive study of one of the most ambitious building programs of the High Middle Ages. Offering a new approach to the traditional building mono- graph, Stephen Murray critically reexamines the documentary, archaeolog- ical, and historiographical evidence; contemporary theological debates; as well as the social, political, and economic contexts in which Amiens was conceived and erected. By integrating these various data, Murray proposes a new chronology for the cathedral and, moreover, reconceptualizes our understanding of the nature of medieval building campaigns, emphasizing the dynamics of change that occurred during the course of construction. This revisionist study includes a newly surveyed plan of Amiens, tran- scripts of key documents, and 195 black-and-white illustrations, many made especially for this edition.

lgli/Sandra Wynands [Wynands, Sandra] - Iconic Spaces: The Dark Theology of Samuel Beckett's Drama (2007, University of Notre Dame Press).epub
Iconic Spaces: The Dark Theology of Samuel Beckett's Drama Sandra Wynands [Wynands, Sandra] University of Notre Dame Press, 2007
Iconic Spaces looks at Samuel Beckett's mature theatrical work as a displaced theology of the icon. Sandra Wynands rejects conventional existentialist or nihilist interpretations of Beckett's work, arguing instead that beneath the text, in the depths of language and being, Beckett creates an absolutely irreducible, transcendent space. She traces a nondual model of perception and experience through a selection of Beckett's art-critical and dramatic works, focusing in particular on four minimalist plays: Catastrophe, Not I, Quad, and Film. Iconic Spaces makes an important contribution to scholars and students of literature, philosophy, theatre studies, and religion by giving them an exciting new way of reading and experiencing Beckett's work.“This is an original, adventurous, and absorbing book. It deploys an acute understanding of contemporary philosophical writing in order to address the demands Beckett makes on his readers and spectators in nonreductive, affirmative fashion; and it also reinvigorates our understanding of Beckett’s relationship to religion and theology by exploring in some detail, and, arguably for the first time, the extent of Beckett’s engagement as a writer, not with positive religion, but with apophatic religious thought.” — Leslie Hill, University of Warwick ”In this remarkable and scrupulously argued book about Samuel Beckett, Sandra Wynands provides a compelling analysis of the postmodern experience of God’s absence. She does so partly by showing how atheism, rigorously deconstructed, can converge with the insights and strategies of negative theology. Sandra Wynands is daringly insightful about Beckett, while also situating his work within a set of historical and cultural parameters that are described with impressive learning and breadth of vision.” — Patrick Grant, University of Victoria “Iconic Spaces is an impressive piece of work. In exploring the relationship between ‘negative theology’ and Samuel Beckett’s late work for the stage, Sandra Wynands makes an original and important contribution to Beckett studies and to modern drama and theatre studies more generally. Her discussion ranges widely across difficult and complex disciplinary, theoretical, philosophical, and critical materials with notable maturity and clarity, providing startlingly original insights on almost every page.” — Ric Knowles, University of Guelph

The Idea of A University (Notre Dame Series in the Great Books) (Notre Dame Series in Great Books) by John Henry Cardinal Newman; edited, with an introduction and notes, by Martin J. Svaglic University of Notre Dame Press, New edition, PS, 1982
" The Idea of a University [is an] eloquent defense of a liberal education which is perhaps the most timeless of all [Newman’s] books and certainly the one most intellectually accessible to readers of every religious faith and of none. . . . [O]nly one who has read The Idea of a University in its entirety, especially the nine discourses, can hope to understand why its reputation is so high: why the first reading of this book has been called an ‘epoch’ in the life of a college man; why Walter Pater thought it ‘the perfect handling of a theory’; why the historian G. M. Young has ranked it with Aristotle’s Ethics among the most valuable of all works on the aim of Education; or why Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch told his students at Cambridge that ‘of all the books written in these hundred years there is perhaps none you can more profitably thumb and ponder.’” ―from the introduction by Martin J. Svaglic

Monk's Tale: The Pilgrimage Begins, 1941–1976 Edward A. Malloy C.S.C. University of Notre Dame Press, Notre Dame, Ind, Indiana, 2009
One of the most respected figures in Catholic higher education, the Reverend Edward A. Malloy has written a thoroughly engaging first installment of his three-volume memoir. This book covers the years from his birth in 1941 to 1975, when he received his doctorate in Christian ethics from Vanderbilt. Written in his trademark self-effacing and humorous style, Malloy's book portrays his childhood growing up in the northeast Washington, D.C., neighborhood of Brookland (the neighborhood's alias was “Little Rome” because of all the Catholic church-related institutions it encompassed). Malloy describes his family and early education, his growing love of sports, and his years at Archbishop Carroll High School where he played on an extraordinarily successful basketball team. The next five chapters chronicle his undergraduate years at Notre Dame, where he was recruited to play basketball, his decision to become a priest, his seminary experience, the taking of final vows, and his graduate school experience at Vanderbilt University.Monk's Tale is a captivating account of growing up Catholic in the 1940s and ‘50s, as well as a revealing reflection of the dramatic changes that occurred in the Catholic Church and in American society during the 1960s. This book is also a loving tribute to Malloy's parents, sisters, friends, teachers, religious mentors, and colleagues who helped pave his way to the University of Notre Dame and to his profound commitment to service, leadership, and God.
