The organization of society formed a crucial element in the remarkable development of the countryside in the North Sea area in the last 1500 years. Vital questions are: Who owned the land? Who gained the profits from its exploitation? How was the use of rural resources controlled and changed? These questions have no simple answers, because the land has been subjected to competing claims, varying from region to region. In early times, peasants mostly possessed and worked their holdings, but lords took much of the produce and had the ultimate control over the land. In more recent times the occupiers and cultivators gained stronger rights over their farms. Neither lords nor peasants were free agents because communities governed the use of common lands. In the highly urbanized North Sea region, towns and townspeople had much and increasing influence over the countryside. Change came from within society, for example from the tension and negotiation between lords and peasants, and the growing importance of the state and its policies. The volume also looks at the interaction between society and external changes, such as the rise and fall of the market, trends in population, and European integration.

Fred Hoyle was one of the most distinguished and at the same time the most controversial scientists of the twentieth century. He was also a quite popular author of science fiction novels, a popular radio announcer on the BBC -- a true renaissance man. His scientific achievements consisted of pioneering work in areas like the radioactivity in stars that produce all of the heavy elements which when subsequently blown into space and collected into planets become the stuff out of which we are all made. He also did fundamental research into some of the practical problems facing the use of Radar during World War II. The biggest controversy came from his support of the steady state theory of the cosmos rather than the Big Bang. Not only did he support steady state, he continued his support long after it became discarded by the mainstream of science. In fact, his last book, published just before his death continued steady state support and further annoyed most of the scientists with a photograph of a flock of geese blindly following one another representing the failure of the big-banger's to even consider an alternate approach. This book is essentially a biography, but it also gives a good look into the world of science in the last century. Good Reading!

El mensaje, descifrado por el brillante científico John Fleming, proporciona información sobre cómo construir una supercomputadora, y una inmensa cantidad de datos para alimentarla. El gobierno se pone manos a la obra y, bajo control militar pero con la ayuda de Fleming y de la bióloga Madeleine Dawnay, se construye el ordenador en una remota zona de Escocia. Una vez terminada, la máquina empieza a solicitar información sobre la especie humana para poder funcionar, y los gobernantes, que esperan obtener unos conocimientos de vital importancia, tanto en el terreno político y militar como en el comercial, se la suministran. Sin embargo, Fleming desconfía de los verdaderos propósitos de la máquina. Esta novela se basa en la serie de la BBC de 1961 del mismo título, que obtuvo un éxito sin precedentes, con audiencias de hasta el 80% de los televidentes británicos. Sus guionistas fueron los autores de la novela. Posteriormente, en el año 2006, fue llevada al cine con el título de «El proyecto Andrómeda», dirigida por John Strickland.
