Transformations : Change From Learning to Growth W. R. Bion (Auth.) Butterworth-Heinemann, London, 1965
Transformations: Change from Learning to Growth is a 12-chapter text that explores the fundamentals and principles of psycho-analytic theories, transformations, and invariants. This book begins with a clinical illustration of the distinction between the patient's experience and the psycho-analyst's experience. The succeeding chapters cover the influence of verbal expression, emotional experience, state of mind, and consciousness in psycho-analysis and transformation. These topics are followed by discussion on the relationship of the “no-thing” and the thing, wherein the personality that is capable of tolerating a no-thing can make use of the no-thing, and so is able to make use of the so-called thoughts. The remaining chapters describe a clinical system that would represent the chief clinical systems that can be seen to exist in the analytic situation. These chapters also examine the gap between reality and the personality, which are aspects of life with which analysts are familiar under the guise of resistance. Resistance operates because it is feared that the reality of the object is imminent. This book will be of value to psycho-analysts, psychologists, and psychiatrists.

Fundamental Physics of Radiology W. J. Meredith and J. B. Massey (Auth.) Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd, Elsevier Ltd., Burlington, 1977
## PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN BY JOHN WRIGHT & SONS (PRINTING) LTD., AT THE STONEBRIDGE PRESS, BRISTOL BS4 5NU PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION WITH the production of this third edition we have taken the opportunity not only to try, yet again, to remove all the minor errors pointed out to us by our friends, but also, and of greater importance, to endeavour to bring the work substantially up to date by including at least some of the changes and advances that have occurred since the first edition was written. Conscious of the need to avoid any great increase in the size of the book and of the need to restrict the size of any enforced price increase, we have been somewhat selective and taken notice only of those changes which now form part of accepted clinical practice. To the same end we have reduced, or eliminated, the attention given to items such as the Geiger-Miiller counter and 'grid' therapy\* the importance of which has waned in the past few years. The chapter on the clinical use of radioactive isotopes has been revised, recast, and repositioned in the book and a new chapter on the clinical uses of ultrasonic radiations has been introduced. Thermoluminescence and its application to dosemetry receive much more attention than previously whilst new sections have been added on xeroradiography, on computer-assisted tomography and on rare-earth intensifying screens. A short appendix on S.I. units replaces the previous appendix on Symbols, Quantities and Units. We realize that these new methods, especially those involving radioactive isotopes and ultrasonic radiations, are large in their scope and are rapidly becoming established as separate subjects in their own right. It is not our intention and, in fact, it would be a mistake to deal with them exhaustively in this book. Our aim is to provide a general introduction to them, to set out the basic principles upon which their clinical uses depend, and to indicate their place in the wider context of radiology. In the revised chapter on gamma-ray sources of plesiotherapy much more attention is given to those radioactive materials which may be used to replace radium or radon, whilst the succeeding chapter on plesiotherapy dosage has been rewritten completely. This latter chapter now gives a more detailed description of and much more tabular information on the Manchester System of mould, interstitial, and intracavitary gamma-ray therapy. We are indebted to Messrs. Churchill Livingstone for permission to use and adapt information previously published in their Radium Dosage: the Manchester System (edited by W. J. Meredith) which is now out of print. As always we are indebted to our many colleagues-medical, scientific and technical-for their guidance and help in matters on which they are far more expert than we. Mrs. M. Greenwood and Miss L. Thompson have given us excellent secretarial help for which we are very grateful, whilst to our respective wives we can only, yet again, express our gratitude for and wonderment at their continued support and tolerance.

Noninvasive Diagnosis of Vascular Disease Falls B. Hershey, Robert W. Barnes and David S. Sumner (Eds.) Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd, Elsevier Ltd., London, 1984
Noninvasive Diagnosis of Vascular Disease explains the anatomy, hemodynamics, pathophysiology, and pathology of the arterial, venous, and cerebrovascular systems. This book begins with a basic background of the noninvasive diagnosis of the arterial occlusive disease, followed by discussions on clinical techniques, diagnostic pitfalls, special problems of interpretation, diagnostic criteria, relative accuracy, and importance of the clinical situation. A brief outline and detailed account of Doppler physics is discussed in Chapters 16 and 21, while the physical phenomena associated with the clinical application of Doppler technology, such as propagation velocity, axial resolution, and lateral resolution are described in Chapter 23. This text concludes with a practical look into the future of Doppler instrumentation and applications of microcomputer technology in the laboratory. This publication is written for surgeons, physicians, technologists, and nurses involved in running a vascular laboratory.

Endocrine Surgery : Butterworths International Medical Reviews: Surgery I. D. A. Johnston and Norman W. Thompson (Eds.) Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd, Elsevier Ltd., London, 1983
Butterworths International Medical Review, Surgery 2: Endocrine Surgery is a 12-chapter text that describes various surgical procedures for the management of a specific endocrine problem. This book deals first with the principles of thyroidectomy and its application in thyrotoxicosis management. The subsequent chapter discusses the management of clinically solitary nodules without definite evidence of malignancy, such as lower cervical adenopathy or recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. This topic is followed by considerations of reoperative parathyroid surgery; adrenalectomy for Cushing's syndrome management; percutaneous transhepatic portal and pancreatic vein catheterization for patients with organic hyperinsulinism, hypergastrinemia, and carcinoid syndrome; and pancreatic transplantation. This text further examines some surgical considerations of pancreatic islet cell and the pituitary in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type I. The concluding chapters explore the benefits and limitations of pre- and post-operative treatments of gastrinoma. These chapters also describe the principles and application of surgical treatments in primary aldosteronism and pheochromocytoma. This work will be of great value to established and in training endocrine surgeons, endocrinologists, and workers in other fields, including radiology and pathology.

<A> physiological approach to clinical neurology James W. Lance (Auth.) Butterworth & Co Publishers Ltd, Elsevier Ltd., London, 1970
A Physiological Approach to Clinical Neurology deals with the mechanism of various neurological symptoms and signs in terms of disordered physiology. Topics covered by this book include pain and other sensations; weakness; the tendon jerk and the stretch reflex; and disordered control of motor neurons. The disorders of basal ganglia and cerebellum are also considered, along with consciousness and unconsciousness; the mechanism of epilepsy; and the relationship between brain and mind. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins by introducing the reader to the clinical analysis of sensory and motor disorders. The discussion then turns to the perception of pain and other kinds of sensation; the clinical approach to the problem of weakness; and the clinical significance of the tendon jerk. In the chapters that follow, appraisal of a neurophysiological thought is applied to common neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, hemiballismus, epilepsy, and developmental anomalies like platybasia. The last chapter explores the phenomena of mind and its connection to the brain as well as its influence on the body, paying particular attention to perception, memory, and emotion. This monograph is intended for those who are proceeding into the clinical years of a medical course, to those who are studying for senior qualifications in internal medicine or neurology, and to those who are merely curious about the cause of neurological phenomena that they observe daily in their patients.

Recent progress in mitral valve disease : [proceedings of the 2. International Symposium on the Mitral Valve, Oct. 1982, San Diego, Calif Carlos Duran, William W. Angell and Allen D. Johnson (Auth.) Butterworth-Heinemann, Elsevier Ltd., London, 1984
Recent Progress in Mitral Valve Disease presents a comprehensive examination of the proceedings that resulted from the International Symposium that transpired in Paris. It discusses the anatomy and physiology of the mitral valve. It addresses the cyclical motion of the mitral valve leaflets. Some of the topics covered in the book are the cyclical motion of the mitral annulus; analysis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; diagnoses of acute myocardial ischemia; characteristics of an abnormally functioning, structurally abnormal mitral valve; atrial function in normal cardiac cycle; and atrial function in acute mitral regurgitation. The factors that modify regurgitant volume are fully covered. An in-depth account of the methods for animal preparation and dynamics of acute experimental mitral regurgitation are provided. The uses and limitations of echocardiography in the examination of the mitral valve are completely presented. A chapter is devoted to the timing of surgical intervention in chronic mitral regurgitation. Another section focuses on the status of prosthetic valves in the mitral position. The book can provide useful information to doctors, cardiologists, students, and researchers.

Central Venous Pressure : Its Clinical Use and Role in Cardiovascular Dynamics W. J. Russell (Auth.) Butterworth; Butterworth-Heinemann, Elsevier Ltd., London, 1974
Central Venous Pressure: Its Clinical Use and Role in Cardiovascular Dynamics focuses on the clinical applications of central venous pressure and the role it plays in cardiovascular dynamics. This book discusses the clinical need to measure central venous pressure, describes the apparatus and its use, and considers the interpretation of the measurements. <br>This text is comprised of five chapters divided into two sections and begins by introducing the reader to the cardiovascular system and its function; the significance of the central venous pressure in cardiovascular dynamics; and the interaction between venous return and cardiac function. The discussion then turns to the principles and techniques of measuring cardiac output and evaluation of central venous pressure. Two factors that affect the normal range, the intrathoracic pressure and the reference level, are highlighted. The final chapter explains the use of the central venous or right atrial pressure in clinical practice to detect changes in blood volume and testing of the equivocal level of central venous pressure using a fluid load or isoprenaline. <br>This book is intended for physiologists and clinicians, including surgeons and anesthesiologists.

Genetic Counselling Alan Carruth Stevenson and B. C. Clare Davison (Auth.) William Heinemann Medical Books Ltd, 2nd Revised edition, 1976
Genetic Counselling, Second Edition covers genetic counseling, which is mainly concerned with advising people about the risk that a member of a family will suffer from a congenital or hereditary disorder. This edition updates topics such as the advent of differential staining of chromosomes and extensive use of amniocentesis and other techniques in pre-natal diagnosis. When considering defects and disorders, an attempt is made to indicate where risk estimates should present no problems to the practicing physician, and where, by reason of genetical, statistical, or diagnostic complexities, it may be advisable to seek some specialist opinion. This book concentrates on such estimations of risk, emphasizing that pre-requisites for adequate estimations of risks are as accurate a diagnosis as possible. The mechanisms of inheritance of the trait or availability of data on which to base empirical estimates are also deliberated. This publication is intended as a guide to clinicians and as an aide-memoire to medical geneticists.

Industrial Hazard and Safety Handbook : (Revised Impression) Ralph W King and John Magid (Auth.) Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd, Repr. with revisions, London, 1980, ©1979
Industrial Hazard and Safety Handbook (Revised Impression) describes and exposes the main hazards found in industry, with emphasis on how these hazards arise, are ignored, are identified, are eliminated, or are controlled. These hazard conditions can be due to human stresses (for example, insomnia), unsatisfactory working environments, as well as secret industrial processes. The book reviews the cost of accidents, human factors, inspections, insurance, legal aspects, planning for major emergencies, organization, and safety measures. The text discusses regulations, codes of practice, site layout, causes of building failure, condition monitoring, non-destructive testing, hazard analysis, and equipment design. The working environment of employees covers air and breathing, lighting and vision, noise and hearing, heat and comfort, fatigue and rest breaks, industrial hygiene and toxicology, or personal protective clothing and devices. The text also points out that some common industrial hazards are due to poor housekeeping (greasy floors, scattered tools), slipped disc (due to wrong handling of heavy loads), falls, falling objects, static electricity, lifting tackles, and wheeled transport inside factories. The book is intended for safety specialists, managers, and engineers responsible for design, production, inspection and maintenance in industry. The book will also be helpful for insurers or lawyers whose work is concerned with industrial accidents and their consequences.

The surgical examination of children : an illustrated guide John M. Hutson, Spencer W. Beasley Heinemann Medical Books ; Year Book Medical Publishers, 4th ed, Oxford, Chicago, 1989
This book demonstrates clearly how to perform a clinical examination in the infant or child with a surgical condition. While most textbooks of pediatric surgery focus on the pathological classification and overall management of disease, in clinical practice physicians and surgeons usually use a problem-oriented approach to clinical diagnosis. Surprisingly, this is rarely taught to students. The authors attempt to redress this imbalance by providing a clinical approach to the patient which can be learned with a minimum of factual information. The book should therefore remain useful to the practitioner throughout his or her medical career. It includes detailed coverage of the usual presentations of common diseases, but does not attempt to cover all aspects of the presentations of uncommon diseases unless their recognition is important for the well-being or survival of the child. Generously illustrated, this is a book for all who are learning the art of pediatric surgical diagnosis.

Amnesia : Clinical, Psychological and Medicolegal Aspects C. W. M. Whitty and O. L. Zangwill (Eds.) Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd, 2d ed., London, Boston, England, 1977
Amnesia: Clinical, Psychological and Medicolegal Aspects, 2nd Edition explores the clinical, psychological, and medicolegal aspects of amnesia. Experimental studies of the organic amnesic syndrome are presented and memory disorders associated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are described. The role of amnesia in cerebral disease, the neuropathology of amnesic states, and psychogenic memory loss are also considered. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins with a discussion on experimental studies of the organic amnesic syndrome, along with certain associated studies of normal memory. The reader is then introduced to the link between amnesia and cerebral pathology; transient global amnesia and its clinical manifestations; the amnesic syndrome and its relation to Korsakoff syndrome; traumatic amnesia; amnesias of temporal lobe origin; and memory disorders following ECT. A neuropathological examination of the human brain in cases of amnesia is presented, and examples of the psychopathology of memory are provided. The final chapter analyzes amnesia from a medicolegal point of view. This monograph will be of interest to clinicians, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychopathologists, psychologists, and medicolegal practitioners.
