lgli/3 Buddhist Asia.pdf
Buddhist Asia Christoph Kleine; Karénina Kollmar-Paulenz; Hubert Seiwert Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Global Secularity. A Sourcebook, 3, 2025
This volume seeks to chart and elucidate the diverse relationships between the religious and secular spheres in regions of Asia that were significantly influenced – sometimes even dominated – by Buddhist discourses, ideas, and institutions. These regions include South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), East and Southeast Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam), Inner Asia (Buryatia, Mongolia, Tibet), and the Himalayan region (Bhutan). These regions were connected by communicative networks long before the global modern age. They constituted an intricately entangled discursive sphere, shaped by the cross-regional spread of concepts and ideas from Buddhism and, in East Asia, Confucianism. The volume sheds light on the prehistory and development of culturally specific forms of secularity, and related concepts, in Asia. It comprises a wide range of texts spanning approximately 2000 years; in many cases this is the first time that they have been presented in English. The texts here are not merely reproduced, but are also introduced and contextualized. Through these materials, the volume highlights the fact that distinctions akin to those between the ‘religious’ and the ‘secular’ were already prevalent in premodern Asia, laying the groundwork for the various forms of secularity which took shape in the modern period.

Asynchronicity Philip Pond Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 1, 2024
Asynchronicity is a study of the information stress and its genesis in the accelerative dynamics of computation and automation. In simple terms, this volume illustrates how anti-democratic communication has become characteristic of our present social and political reality. This book is significant in two respects. By fully realising a general theory of social time, it advances temporal analysis as a mode of social enquiry. Grounding the production of time within the event-dynamics of media systems, it establishes a framework for analysing the temporal logics of digital media, and shows that they may be fundamentally incompatible with the requirements of democratic communication.

lgli/Allen, Colin 2014. Umwelt or Umwelten? How should shared representation be understood given such diversity? *Semiotica* 198: 137-158..pdf
Umwelt or Umwelten? How should shared representation be understood given such diversity? Allen, Colin Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co. KG; Walter de Gruyter GmbH; De Gruyter Mouton (ISSN 0037-1998), Semiotica, #198, 2014, 2014 jan 01
It is a truism among ethologists that one must not forget that animals perceive and represent the world differently from humans. Sometimes this caution is phrased in terms of von Uexküll's Umwelt concept. Yet it seems possible (perhaps even unavoidable) to adopt a common ontological framework when comparing different species of mind. For some purposes it seems sufficient to anchor comparative cognition in common-sense categories; bats echolocate insects (or a subset of them) after all. But for other purposes it seems necessary to find out more about how organisms organize their perceptions into biologically significant and perhaps cognitively meaningful states. Complex animals have high bandwidth sensory channels that feed into large nerve networks with very complex dynamics. Even for relatively simple animals belonging to species believed to have a small, fixed number of neurons, the odds are very much against any two animals of the same species, let alone different species, having exactly the same couplings to the environment, the same dimensionality in their nervous systems, or the same dynamics. Given such diversity (which von Uexküll himself recognized), how should we think about shared representation, shared meaning, and cognitive similarity between individuals and species? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Mists of Time: Negotiating the Past in Ancient Literature Franco Montanari, Theodore D. Papanghelis, Bernhard Zimmermann, Evina Sistakou Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 2024
The idea of the past, far from suggesting a nostalgic longing or an antiquarian curiosity for ages and cultures irrevocably lost, is essential to the human perception of the world. The volume at hand, entitled In the Mists of Time: Negotiating the Past in Ancient Literature, explores pastness as expressed through myth and early history and as reflected in sophisticated concepts and epistemological questions in Ancient Greek and Latin literature. The eighteen contributions illustrate how the ancients addressed the past through poetry, history and philosophy and lend insight into the metaliterary, self-reflexive way of dealing with past texts through scholarship.

Kant’s Transcendental Semantics Zeljko Loparic, Frederick Rauscher, Rogerio Severo Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 2024
Kant’s Transcendental Semantics is a translation of the most influential monograph on Kant published in Brazil, one that launched the “Semantic School” in a country with a thriving tradition of Kant scholarship. Zeljko Loparic differs from most interpreters of the Critique of Pure Reason in claiming that Kant’s main aim is neither metaphysical nor epistemological nor methodological but semantic in asking for the conditions for meaning and reference of terms in order to justify the possibility of meaningful discourse of different types. Loparic asks how our claims can have any meaning at all, how they relate to actual and possible objects, how our terms can ground scientific problem-solving, and what the truth-conditions are for various kinds of statements that differ according to the grounds of their meaning and the targets of their reference. Loparic argues for distinct uses for concepts of perception, concepts of experience, mathematical concepts, pure concepts of the understanding (the categories), and the heuristic ideas of reason. Because Kant’s main worry in the Critique of Pure Reason is with the possibility of synthetic a priori judgments, Loparic labels Kant’s defense of those judgments a transcendental semantics.

Security in International Climate Policy Zehra Askinsena Ilkilic Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 1, 2024
The impacts of climate change are increasingly felt worldwide, affecting every country regardless of geographical location. Over the past 50 years, numerous treaties have been produced that are aimed at combatting climate change. However, these international efforts have often been hindered by the actions of great powers prioritising their own interests over global solutions. Since security is one of the most determining factors in states’ decision-making, Security in International Climate Policy analyses the relationship between states’ security policies and their efforts against climate change. The book hypothesises that security policies negatively affect measures against climate change. While the security policies of great powers pose a hurdle for a successful climate policy in the first stages of efforts, there is a shift in the 21st century, when climate change itself begins to threaten the security of states. Based on these findings, the author predicts future policy trends and makes policy recommendations.

lgli/18 Jaina Culture in Medieval Karnataka.pdf
Jaina Culture in Medieval Karnataka: Dominance, Dependency and Endurance Julia A.B. Hegewald Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Dependency and Slavery Studies, 18, 2025
Why did the Jainas in Karnataka plunge from a position of supremacy into one of severe dependency? After a steep and steady rise throughout the region from about the fifth century CE, Jaina influence waned dramatically from the late eleventh or early twelfth centuries onwards. In this publication, specialists in Indian history, religious studies and anthropology, as well as historians of art and architecture, discuss various expressions of this sudden and detrimental decline and explore the reasons for it, focusing in particular on the relations of the Jainas with Vīraśaivas and Muslims. The evidence provided by the five international scholars, who offer insights from different disciplinal backgrounds, indicates that the reasons for the Jainas’ loss of authority in the region were manifold. Certain internal triggers, such as changes in Jaina social structure and religious practices, adversely affected their position over time. In particular, however, the withdrawal of royal patronage, the success of the Vīraśaivas as traders, and the emergence in the area at this time of a number of competing religious groups caused the Jainas to slip into a position of strong asymmetrical dependency.

Why Ancient Objects Matter: Greek and Roman Art and Materiality from Antiquity to the Present Nicholas Cipolla; Anne F. LaGatta; Candace Weddle Livingston; Peter J.M. Schertz; Ambra Spinelli; Sarah K. Yeomans Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 2025
This collection of twenty-eight essays by emerging and established scholars presents work that deeply engages with the materiality and history of Greek and Roman artworks, artifacts, and monuments. Dedicated to Prof. John Pollini in honor of his contributions to the study of the ancient Mediterranean world, this volume reflects the broad range of his scholarship, from sculpture (especially portraiture) and its ancient contexts to material studies, iconographic analysis, and the complex ways that religious and political change both shape and are shaped by material culture. The contributions assembled in this volume highlight the diverse ways in which contemporary scholars construct interpretations of visual art based on a deep understanding of the ancient world, precise attention to detail and technique, and rigorous research into the historical contexts of objects, myths, literature, and iconography. Through their interdisciplinary approaches, the contributors offer new insights on artistic production, viewer reception, and social history, with an emphasis on the theme of "transformation" as objects, artworks, and ideas journey through time and from one culture to another.

Anthony Munday: The First Book of Primaleon of Greece: A Critical Edition María Beatriz Hernández Pérez Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 2024
This edition of Anthony Munday's The first book of Primaleon of Greece (1595) includes an introduction, notes, glossary, and critical apparatus that will enable modern readers to enjoy and better appreciate Munday's translation of the Iberian romance already turned into Italian and French before reaching English readers. Munday translated François de Vernassal's L'Histoire de Primaleon de Grece continuant celle de Palmerin D'Olive (1550), out of which he produced two different titles devoted to Emperor Palmerin's sons, Palmendos and Primaleon. The present volume is especially devoted to the coming of age and tournament activity in Constantinople of the main protagonist, prince Primaleon, as well as to Prince Edward of England's adventures throughout European lands, and to their final encounter. These twenty-four chapters follow the previous thirty-two in Vernassal's edition, published by Munday in 1589 and already edited by Leticia Álvarez-Recio (The Honourable, Pleasant and rare Conceited Historie of Palmendos, 2022). It aims to allow those readers interested in romance or Renaissance culture to gain access to texts that have remained so far ignored, in spite of the popularity they once enjoyed.

Waging War and Making Peace: European Ways of Inciting and Containing Armed Conflict, 1710-1960 Matthew D'Auria, Rolf Petri, Jan Vermeiren Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 1, 2024
The history of Europe is marked not only by violence and division but also by efforts to reduce the destructiveness of war. In this volume, the authors explore the meaning of ‘Europe’ within war and peace discourses from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. They examine imagined wars, the post-1815 security order, the portrayal of Russian and Muslim 'Others,' double standards in international law, pacifist rhetoric, and the role of ‘Europe’ in war propaganda and resistance movements. The authors demonstrate how both war and peace practices have shaped the concept of ‘Europe’ over time.

Negative Concord: A Hundred Years On Johan van der Auwera, Chiara Gianollo Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 2024
The concept of ‘negative concord’ refers to the seemingly multiple exponence of semantically single negation as in You ain’t seen nothing yet. This book takes stock of what has been achieved since the notion was introduced in 1922 by Otto Jespersen and sets the agenda for future research, with an eye towards increased cross-fertilization between theoretical perspectives and methodological tools. Major issues include (i) How can formal and typological approaches complement each other in uncovering and accounting for cross-linguistic variation? (ii) How can corpus work steer theoretical analyses? (iii) What is the contribution of diachronic research to the theoretical debates?

Probabilistic Benchmarking: Norm-Setting in the Age of Big Data Andrew Banasiewicz Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 1, 2024
What is a ‘good’ outcome? In relation to others, and in relation to the past? Commonly associated with the ideas of benchmarking and baselining, comparative assessment is an important part of organizational management, but this broadly defined undertaking lacks clear conceptual framing and methodological foundations. At the same time, the readily available transactional data make robust tracking and measurement possible at an unprecedented scale, but also accentuate the impact of assessment paradox: To be truly meaningful, exact magnitudes-expressed values often need to be ‘translated’ into qualitative, assessment-laden categories, but that task is impeded by lack of established approaches for doing so. Inspired by these observations, Probabilistic Benchmarking frames the notions of benchmarking and baselining as two complementary but distinct mechanisms of comparative assessment that make use of informational contents of organizational data to contribute unbiased, systematic, and consistent evaluation of outcomes or states of interest. In that general context, this book provides much-needed conceptual and methodological clarity to guide construction and use of benchmarks and baselines, and re-casts the idea of assessment standards in the context of data-derived estimates, to better align the practice of comparative assessment with the emerging realities of the Age of Data. This pioneering research-based but application-minded book bridges the gap between theory and practice. It will greatly benefit professionals, business students and others interested in the broad domain of organizational assessment.

Manual of Discourse Markers in Romance Maj-Britt Mosegaard Hansen, Jacqueline Visconti Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 1, 2024
Virtually unstudied until the 1980s, discourse markers have gone on to become a growth industry. Research on markers is central to comprehensive theories of the synchronic linguistic system as such, of the use of language in communication, and of language change. From the very beginning, linguists working on Romance languages have been at the forefront of research on discourse markers. Including among its contributors many of the foremost experts in the field, this volume not only offers substantial state-of-the-art introductions to the diverse facets of contemporary research on discourse markers, with a focus on Romance, but it achieves added value by including in each chapter original and previously unpublished results. The first part of the book addresses foundational issues: What are discourse markers? What is their relationship to other types of pragmatic markers? The second part considers discourse markers at different levels of linguistic description, in particular: their grammatical status, their semantics and pragmatics, their prosodic features, their positioning within discourse units. The third part outlines different approaches to the study of discourse markers, namely contrastive studies, corpus linguistics, discourse traditions, and historical linguistics. The fourth part explores discourse markers at the interface with central topics in linguistics, such as politeness, social variation, language acquisition and psycholinguistic processing. The final part focuses on discourse markers in each of the major Romance languages, namely French, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese and Romanian. The volume will be of interest to researchers and students working in the field of Romance studies, general linguists, pragmaticians, discourse analysts, educationalists, and psychologists.

lgli/The Concept of Evil in Judaism, Christianity and Islam.epub
The Concept of Evil in Judaism, Christianity and Islam Catharina Rachik; Georges Tamer Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses, 16, 2024
The present volume of the series Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses explores various conceptions of evil in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, including key terms from their respective sacred texts, major theodicy discussions and contemporary developments. Throughout history and even today, religious scholars and believers have struggled with the question of the origin of evil and how a benevolent God can allow evil to exist in the world. Why does a compassionate God not prevent deadly diseases or natural disasters? What do religions define as evil, and is God responsible for or even the creator of this evil? The articles, written by distinguished scholars in their respective fields, offer a variety of answers to such existential questions. The articles address topics such as the origin of evil, the responses to evil in sacred texts and religious traditions, and the role of human agency. Each author offers a critical analysis of these topics as well as recommendations for future research. The volume also highlights commonalities and differences among the three monotheistic religions.

Metaphors of the Ancient World: Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Ancient Sources Fabian Horn Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 2025
The objective of this edited volume is to bring together contributions from the fields of Ancient Greek and Latin Philology that apply the cognitive linguistic framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) to ancient texts and other source material. The individual chapters are unified by this shared theoretical approach, occasionally supplemented by further theoretical frameworks and methodologies from literary criticism and the cognitive sciences. The scope of the volume is broad, and there is no restriction to specific literary genres or periods of history. Discussion ranges from the Archaic Greek epic poetry of Homer to the early imperial philosophical treatises of Seneca the Younger. Topics treated along the way include Presocratic philosophy, Ancient Greek comedy, and Roman love elegy. This collection of research by theoretically aligned Classicists thereby showcases the potential and versatility of CMT when it comes to the study and interpretation of ancient texts.

lgli/3 Sylvester of Antioch.pdf
Sylvester of Antioch: Life and Achievements of an 18th-Century Christian Orthodox Patriarch Mihai Ţipău Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Early Arabic Printing in the East, 3, 2024
In 1724, Sylvester, a native of the island of Cyprus, was elected Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch and All the East. For more than four decades, he endeavored to preserve the legacy of one of the earliest Christian Churches in the Levant. He faced major challenges because of the ever changing balance of power between the Latin Church and its missionaries, the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the French and English interests in the Levant, and the central and local Ottoman authorities. In his efforts to provide church books for the Arab Orthodox Christians, Sylvester was helped by rulers of the Romanian Principalities, Moldavia and Wallachia. He printed a number of books in Jassy and Bucharest and opened an Arabic press in Beirut. Alongside his patriarchal duties, Sylvester was also an accomplished icon painter. His works, in the Post-Byzantine Greek style of the 18th century, are preserved in Syrian and Lebanese churches, as well as elsewhere. Their study reveals just another aspect of his complex activity. The book presents for the first time in English the biography and achievements of Sylvester of Antioch, based on a wide range of contemporary Greek, Arabic and Romanian historical sources.

The Long 1968 in Hungary and Romania Adrian-George Matus Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 2023
This book advances a local, regional, and comparative analysis of the history of the sixty-eighters from Hungary and Romania between 1956 and 1975. The aim of the book is to answer to the following research question: to what extent does ‘the long 1968’ mark and change protest history? Another axis of my research, equally important, is: how can one genuinely distinguish between a protest, an opposition, and a pastime? Where did radicalisation truly begin, and when was it solely an auto-perception as a dissident? In other words, how can one truly distinguish between a leisure activity like listening to Radio Free Europe or exploring an altered state of consciousness, and an explicit political activity like organising a protest or writing subversive texts? Among other aims, the books’s scope is to understand where a leisure activity ends, and a protest starts. By ‘practicing counterculture,’ did the youth wish to contest the system or simply express themselves? As method, oral history plays a crucial part. On a superficial level, the interviews helped to fill in the archival gap. However, oral testimonies proved to reveal much more than essential factual information. Oral history clarified how political and social events influenced the subjects' memory formation.

Fascism or Whatever You Want to Call It: Confronting the Beast Locally and Globally Saladdin Bahozde Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, De Gruyter Contemporary Social Sciences, 56, 2025
Fascism or Whatever You Want to Call It constructs a crucial framework for diagnosing and exposing fascist ideologies and movements in whatever historical and geographical circumstances or disguises they may appear. At no point in history have so many people been subjected to the rule or threat of fascist movements. Nor have power and privilege ever been so concentrated in the hands of a few. We are living in the age of the decline of bourgeois liberalism and the rise of something much less democratic, something sectarian, extremist, militaristic, and exclusionary, which should be called fascism. Because fascism deploys endless camouflaging strategies, a critical theory for diagnosing and analyzing it is desperately needed. That is what this book offers. Arguing against conventional approaches that use the European model of the 1930s as a yardstick, Bahozde conceptualizes fascism as a form, rather than a system, of power and ideology.

Algebras of Unbounded Operators: Algebraic and Topological Aspects of Murray-Von Neumann Algebras Aleksey Ber, Vladimir Chilin, Galina Levitina, Fedor Sukochev, Dmitriy Zanin Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 2025
Derivations on von Neumann algebras are well understood and are always inner, meaning that they act as commutators with a fixed element from the algebra itself. The purpose of this book is to provide a complete description of derivations on algebras of operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra. The book is designed to serve as an introductory graduate level to various measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebras and their properties. These classes of operators form their respective algebras and the problem of describing derivations on these algebras was raised by Ayupov, and later by Kadison and Liu. A principal aim of the book is to fully resolve the Ayupov-Kadison-Liu problem by proving a necessary and sufficient condition of the existence of non-inner derivation of algebras of measurable operators. It turns out that only for a finite type I von Neumann algebra M may there exist a non-inner derivation on the algebra of operators affiliated with M. In particular, it is established that the classical derivation d/dt of functions of real variables can be extended up to a derivation on the algebra of all measurable functions. This resolves a long-standing problem in classical analysis.

Quintilians ›Institutio Oratoria‹ Buch VII: Einleitung, Text und Kommentar Fabian Fedder Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Göttinger Forum für Altertumswissenschaft. Beihefte N.F., 2024

The Tyranny of Time? D. Jeffrey Bingham Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 1, 2024
In a day fascinated with questions of historiography and with explicating a distinctive Christian philosophy of time and history, Henri-Charles Puech’s (1950s) work on Gnosis and time found an audience. Studying four second-century texts he marked as Gnostic, he argued for the Gnostic, anti-cosmic, anti-historical pessimism about existence within the tyrannical temporal world of bondage and error. Bliss and truth were otherworldly and atemporal. This book reassesses Puech’s argument by analysis of the writings undergirding his sample and a wide array of second-century Christian and Gnostic-Christian texts that display not the Gnostic view, as if there were one, but a broader second-century theological discussion regarding time, world and knowledge manifesting a spectrum of perspectives. A review of past and present scholarly discourse that evoked discussions of Gnosticism and anti-cosmism, and informed Puech’s thesis begins the volume along with study of his own thesis. A discussion of the academy’s reception of Puech then follows. The close reading of early pertinent texts forms the heart of the work arguing for eight discernible models of history, time, and world that arose within the second-century intellectual debate.

Postcolonial Theory and Crisis Paulo de Medeiros, Sandra Ponzanesi Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 2024
In the millennial transition the prefix 'post' had come to signify more and more not just the realisation of a 'coming after' but also of the impossibility of not seeing the present as still very much working through the wounds of the past. Yet with the appearance of pseudo-concepts such as 'post-truth' after an equally imaginary 'death of History', the logic of the 'post', itself always already under questioning, may appear to have outlived its usefulness. How to make sense of postcolonial theory in Europe in the present? One way might be to renew its significance as world conflicts have entered a new 'post-imperial phase' with the return of ideologies of empire in various parts of the world. The essays in this volume address those questions at both a conceptual, theoretical level, and through the analysis of specific case studies. In the Introduction Paulo de Medeiros and Sandra Ponzanesi review the main questions outlined above in relation to the current debates in the Humanities from their respective disciplinary perspectives. The volume is organised in four sections, each containing four chapters. Even though all the chapters present a reflection on Postcolonial Theory and Crisis, some focus more specifically on aspects of the crisis in a global perspective such as humanitarian crisis and the role of mediatization of conflicts, to issues related to human rights, refugees, migrancy, environmental crisis to questions of memory and postmemory as well as the critique of art and utopian thought.

Perspectives on the Self : Reflexivity in the Humanities Vojtěch Kolman, Tereza Matějčková, Vojtěch Kolman, Tereza Matějčková Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 1. Auflage, Berlin/Boston, 2022
<p>The volume develops the concepts of the self and its reflexive nature as they are linked to modern thought from Hegel to Luhmann. The moderns are reflexive in a double sense: they create themselves by self-reflexivity and make their world – society – in their own image. That the social world is reflexive means that it is made up of non-subjective (or supra-subjective) communication. The volume's contributors analyze this double reflexivity, of the self and society, from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing both on individual and social narratives. This broad, interdisciplinary approach is a distinctive mark of the entire project. The volume will be structured around the following axes: Self-making and reflexivity – theoretical topics; Social self and the modern world; Literature – self and narrativity; Creative Self – text and fine art. Among the contributors are some of the most renowned specialists in their respective fields, including J. F. Kervégan, B. Zabel, P. Stekeler-Weithofer, I. James, L. Kvasz, H. Ikäheimo and others.<br></p>

Senses of the Future: Conflicting Ideas of the Future in the World Today Gerard Delanty Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 2024
The future has become a problem for the present. Almost every critical issue is now understood and experienced through the prism of the future since this is the primary focus for the playing out of crises. Senses of the Future offers a wide-ranging discussion of theories of the future. It covers the main ideas of the future in modern thought and explores how we should view the future today in light of a plurality of very different and conflicting visions. The key contribution of this book is to bring together the different approaches with an account that is grounded in sociological and philosophical analysis as opposed to visions of the future that are inspired by extreme visions of catastrophe or approaches that see the future as only the continuation of the present. Given a revival of apocalyptical visions of the ‘end times’ and dystopian views of the future of human societies, there is urgent need for a new approach on how we should imagine the future. The author explores the future as a field of tensions that is revealed in narratives, utopian desires, hope, imaginaries, and social struggles concerning the potential possibilities of the present: the future does not just arrive; it has to be fought for. This book is an important contribution to a critical sociology of the future. It is both a work of reconstruction and critique grounded in a historical and philosophical hermeneutics of the future. The Languages and Linguistics of Northern Asia Edward Vajda, José Andrés Alonso de la Fuente Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, The World of Linguistics [WOL], 2024
The Languages and Linguistics of Northern Asia: A Comprehensive Guide surveys the indigenous languages of Asia’s North Pacific Rim, Siberia, and adjacent portions of Inner Eurasia. It provides in-depth descriptions of every first-order family of this vast area, with special emphasis on family-internal subdivision and dialectal differentiation. Individual chapters trace the origins and expansion of the region’s widespread pastoral-based language groups as well as the microfamilies and isolates spoken by northern Asia’s surviving hunter-gatherers. Separate chapters cover sparsely recorded languages of early Inner Eurasia that defy precise classification and the various pidgins and creoles spread over the region. Other chapters investigate the typology of salient linguistic features of the area, including vowel harmony, noun inflection, verb indexing (also known as agreement), complex morphologies, and the syntax of complex predicates. Issues relating to genealogical ancestry, areal contact and language endangerment receive equal attention. With historical connections both to Eurasia’s pastoral-based empires as well as to ancient population movements into the Americas, the steppes, taiga forests, tundra and coastal fringes of northern Asia offer a complex and fascinating object of linguistic investigation.

Les Empires berbères: constructions et déconstructions d'un objet historiographique Mehdi Ghouirgate Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Islam – Thought, Culture, and Society, 2024
This work compares medieval and modern Arabic sources relating to the Berber Empires (11th-13th centuries) with the way in which European studies have apprehended this topic against the backdrop of the emergence of orientalism and the expansion of France in the Maghreb. Indeed, the invocation and then the study of the Berber Empires served to characterize a great Other of proximity : the Maghreb at once so close and yet so different. Studying this past therefore amounted to giving perspectives to this radical difference. In the context of the colonized and then newly independent Maghreb, this yet distant past never ceased to serve as a reference and as a framework for a "roman national" which aimed to give these States a solid foundation.

Here – Hither – Hence and Related Categories 26 Julia Nintemann, Maja Robbers, Nicole Hober Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Studia Typologica [STTYP], 26, 2020
As a follow-up study to the global comparison of spatial interrogatives (Studia Typologica 20), the present book examines the spatial declarative counterparts which are provided by the expression class of spatial deictic adverbs. In a functionally motivated typological approach, equivalents of Early Modern English here – hither – hence and there – thither – thence are identified across a sample of 250 languages from all macro-areas. These are also quantitatively assessed to extrapolate areal and global trends of coding patterns. The formal relationships between spatial interrogative and spatial declarative paradigms are analyzed with a focus on the syncretism of categories and of individual cells. Qualitative discussions of patterns precede in-depth treatments of problematic cases and other relevant issues related to the research topic. The quantitative results strongly point to areal linguistic trends concerning the distribution of distinct and non-distinct coding of the three spatial relations Place, Goal, and Source. Additional aspects such as quantitative evaluations of constructional complexity are addressed subsequently.

<p>The series Religion and Society (RS) contributes to the exploration of religions as social systems– both in Western and non-Western societies; in particular, it examines religions in their differentiation from, and intersection with, other cultural systems, such as art, economy, law and politics. Due attention is given to paradigmatic case or comparative studies that exhibit a clear theoretical orientation with the empirical and historical data of religion and such aspects of religion as ritual, the religious imagination, constructions of tradition, iconography, or media. In addition, the formation of religious communities, their construction of identity, and their relation to society and the wider public are key issues of this series.<br></p>

Computational Drama Analysis: Reflecting on Methods and Interpretations Melanie Andresen, Nils Reiter Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 1, FR, 2024
Dramatic texts come with a natural structure of acts, scenes and speech clearly assigned to characters that lends itself to computational analysis: These explicit structures allow for straightforward formalizations without extensive preparatory work. Work on drama has therefore always been at the forefront of research in computational literary studies, with its pioneers analyzing drama quantitatively long before the digital age. Today, increasingly large digital text corpora are available and computational literary studies aims at a higher-scaled view on literary history, promising to analyze thousands of literary texts simultaneously. After decades of exploring the possibilities offered by computational methods, the field is now undergoing a phase of consolidation that takes stock of achievements and opportunities and critically reflects the computational methods and interpretations derived from data. Building on insights from the fields' tradition and current research approaches, this volume provides an overview of the status quo of computational drama analysis and explores possible routes for the future.

Finitely Presented Groups: With Applications in Post-Quantum Cryptography and Artificial Intelligence Volker Diekert, Martin Kreuzer Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, 1, 2024
This book contains surveys and research articles on the state-of-the-art in finitely presented groups for researchers and graduate students. Overviews of current trends in exponential groups and of the classification of finite triangle groups and finite generalized tetrahedron groups are complemented by new results on a conjecture of Rosenberger and an approximation theorem. A special emphasis is on algorithmic techniques and their complexity, both for finitely generated groups and for finite Z-algebras, including explicit computer calculations highlighting important classical methods. A further chapter surveys connections to mathematical logic, in particular to universal theories of various classes of groups, and contains new results on countable elementary free groups. Applications to cryptography include overviews of techniques based on representations of p-groups and of non-commutative group actions. Further applications of finitely generated groups to topology and artificial intelligence complete the volume. All in all, leading experts provide up-to-date overviews and current trends in combinatorial group theory and its connections to cryptography and other areas.

New Rural Cinema: Landscape, Community and Precarity in Recent US Indie Films Tim Lindemann Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Film, Class, Society, 2024
n the past decade, spanning from the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis to the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, rural poverty in the United States has risen dramatically. The impact of the pandemic is set to intensify these inequalities as the decades of neoliberal dismantling of public healthcare and other social institutions leave inhabitants of impoverished rural areas particularly vulnerable. Even before this current exacerbation, representations of rural landscape in American cinema have sought to spatially visualize the country’s social inequalities and focus on the victims of poverty and marginalization. The films discussed in this monograph, Ballast (2008), Winter’s Bone (2010), Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012), and Leave No Trace (2018), address deep rural poverty in a complex manner and facilitate an interactive, social understanding of landscape. New Rural Cinema suggest a novel way of looking at landscape in cinema that responds to and guides its readers through this recent development in American Independent film. It views the chosen films as expressions of a growing awareness of the dire inequality caused by neoliberal capitalism in the United States and the role landscape plays both in its mechanisms of social exclusion as well as in its collective contestation.

The Concept of Body in Judaism, Christianity and Islam Christoph Böttigheimer, Konstantin Kamp Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses, 2023
This volume of the series "Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses" investigates the roots of the concept of "body" in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Body and being a created being stands in the focus of all the thre major monotheistic faiths. It is not just by the christian idea of man's likeness to God that indicates that the human body is a central object of religious thinking, both culturally and theologically charged. Here, the body stands in the crossfire of terms like "pure" and "unpure", "sacred" and "profane", "male" and "femal". And besides the theological controversies, everyday experiences like sexuality, gender equality and how to dispose of the own body (and that of others) are undoubtly recent and highly contentious discussion points in the debate of a peaceful living together of different religions and cultures. The volume presents the concept of "body" in its different aspects as anchored in the traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. It unfolds commonalities and differences between the three monotheistic religions as well as the manifold discourses about peace within these three traditions. The book offers fundamental knowledge about the specific understanding of the body in each one of these traditions, their interdependencies and their relationship to secular world views.

lgli/Kant’s Transcendental Semantics.pdf
Kant’s Transcendental Semantics Željko Loparić Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Kantstudien-Ergänzungshefte, 227, 2024

Ezekiel’s Sign-Acts: Methods and Interpretation Tyler D. Mayfield, Penelope Barter; Ed. Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG, Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für die alttestamentliche Wissenschaft, v 562, 2025
The Ezekiel passages describing the instructions for, and dramatization of, divine messages (Ezekiel 3-5; 12; 24; 37) are among the most bizarre in the Hebrew Bible. The prophet is commanded to embody his message of judgment to Jerusalem, and these actions clarify the oracles they surround. Yet, these sign-acts are frequently overlooked within Ezekiel studies, which tend to focus on the book’s strange visions and controversial oracles. This volume addresses the growing diversity in approaches in Ezekiel studies by inviting international senior and junior scholars to focus on the texts concerning Ezekiel’s sign-acts. It aims to redirect scholarly attention to these often-ignored texts, which stand so central to understanding the nature of prophecy as well as the overall book of Ezekiel.
