Keep your brain alive : 83 neurobic exercises to help prevent memory loss and increase mental fitness Katz, Lawrence, 1956-, Rubin, Manning New York : Workman Pub., 1999
No more punch lines that just slipped away. No more names on the tip of your tongue. No more senior moments! Drawing on cutting-edge neurological research, how to keep your brain alive: 83 neurobic exercises brings help to everyone whose memory is starting to slip. Devised by Dr. Lawrence Katz, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center, and Manning Rubin, author of 60 Ways to Relieve Stress in 60 Seconds, here is a regimen of mental cross-training that can be done anywhere, by anyone, at any time of day. The premise is simple: When you exercise the brain, you release natural growth factors called neurotrophins, which in turn enhance the brain's level of fitness. And nothing so easily stimulates the brain as breaking routines and using the five senses in new and unexpected ways. So if you're right-handed, wake up tomorrow and brush your teeth with your left hand. Or close your eyes before you get into the car and then get the key into the ignition. Every time you open a new circuit in your brain, it's like doing a round of mental sit-ups, without the pain., Issue: 28, Edition: updated, Offers unusual tasks designed to stimulate brain cell growth

Finger lickin', rib stickin', great tastin', hot & spicy barbecue by Jane Butel; illustrations by Jerry Joyner Workman Pub. Co.; Workman Pub. Co; Workman Publishing Company, New York, New York State, 1982
In North Carolina the sauce is loaded with vinegar, and hickory smoke is essential. South Carolinians swear by mustard, while Texans insist on tomato sauce and Worcestershire. Author and cook Jane Butel has traveled all across the country to pick up on the passions for America's favorite summertime food: barbecued hamburgers, chicken, ham, duck, ribs and more ribs. <br> <br> From fast and simple Louisiana Down Home Barbecue to Hawaii's slow and delicious Illahee Pork Chops, Butel's recipes are the best and latest from every region. They have been coaxed from friends and relatives, competitors and restaurateurs, from everyone with a good idea-including barbecue champion Jerry Wood and a chauffeur named Anthony who revealed his own glorious concoction (it relies on plum tomatoes) while driving Butel to a barbecue contest. <br> <br> Step-by-step instructions explain Basic Sauce and Butel's Super Secret Recipe. The author remarks on spiciness, and considers the pit-smoking versus smokehouse debate. She lists sources for mail-order supplies, and even provides recipes for side dishes: cole slaw, beans, potato salad, and-to finish things off for good-a sumptuous chocolate double fudge cake. Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club and Better Homes &amp; Gardens Family Book Service. 274,000 copies in print. <p>Recipes that "...should please those with a passion for barbecue."--Publishers Weekly. </p>

Making your own baby food Mary Dustan Turner and James S. Turner Workman Pub. Co.; Workman Pub. Co; Workman Publishing Company, Rev., updated and expanded ed., New York, New York State, 1976
Abstract: Three principles are the basis for infant feeding suggestions: 1) infants have rights, all which stem from nourishment; 2) each infant is unique, therefore processed food for an "average" baby is not always proper; 3) all individuals, including infants, must have safeguards to assure food is beneficial and without negative effects. Studies of infant foods and nourishment reveal that infant nourishment is poor, breastfeeding had declined and that behavioural and development problems can be related to diet. Dietary suggestions are given for the prenatal diet. Warnings on the baby food industry include information on additives in processed baby food, food industry scare tactics, and a study on the high cost of processed baby food. Information on breastfeeding, introducing solids into the infant diet, and storage of and traveling with homemade baby food are suggested as alternatives to processed food use. Recipes for high quality food at reasonable prices are included for infant, toddler, and family nutrition

BASIC Computer Games: Microcomputer Edition edited by David H. Ahl; program conversion by Steve North; ill. by George Beker Workman Pub.; Workman Pub Co, Microcomputer ed., New York, New York State, 1978
BASIC Computer Games: Microcomputer Edition by David H. Ahl is a legendary book that, although no longer entirely up to date, remains an excellent starting point for anyone just beginning their journey into programming and game development. Released in the 1970s, it was a cornerstone of early computing, offering simple but engaging games written in BASIC, the most accessible language of the time. For me, this book was instrumental in my early development as a programmer. It helped me create a variety of simple games, including a very basic version of Blackjack, which was my first attempt at implementing gambling mechanics in code. It was rudimentary but served as the first step toward building more complex projects. Now, as I continue to work on more sophisticated projects for my portfolio, I draw inspiration from newer books such as The Art of Game Design by Jesse Schell and Game Programming Patterns by Robert Nystrom. These works, along with modern websites like (https://casinobonuszok.com/) https://casinobonuszok.com/ , help me stay updated on trends and best practices in the gaming and gambling industries, from the mechanics of risk and reward to understanding player psychology. Despite the rapid advancements in technology and knowledge, BASIC Computer Games will always hold a special place in my development journey. It laid the foundation for my understanding of game logic and programming and, in many ways, set me on the path to where I am today.

The Lazlo letters : the amazing, real-life, actual correspondence of Lazlo Toth, American! by Don Novello Workman Pub. Co.; Workman Publishing Company, Rev. ed., New York, New York State, 1992
In letters to stars, dignitaries, and chairmen of the country's most powerful organizations, Don Novello's alter ego Lazlo Toth pestered his victims for photographs, offered outlandish advice, fired off strange inquiries, and more. The strangest part? Practically everyone answered, leaving Toth with a hilarious collection of outlandish correspondence unmatched in the history of American letters. The Lazlo Letters contains nearly 100 notes to public figures, including then-President Nixon, Vice President Ford ("I've been Vice President of a lot of organizations myself, so I know how you feel."), Bebe Rebozo, Lester Maddox, Earl Butz, and America's top business leaders. The replies, says the author, "classic examples of American politeness." In an on-going correspondence with the White House, Toth suggests everything from ridiculously corny jokes for the President to use, to a campaign song sung to the tune of "Tea for Two." He asks the president of a bubble bath company just how to use the product, as the packaging instructions specifically state to "keep dry." "No matter how absurd my letter was, no matter how much I ranted and raved, they always answered," reports the author. "Many of these replies are beautiful examples of pure public relations nonsense." One is columnist James Kilpatrick has a lone sentiment for Toth-"Nuts to You!" 247,000 copies in print.

How to make your man behave in 21 days or less, using the secrets of professional dog trainers written by Karen Salmansohn; illustrated by Alison Seiffer Workman Pub.; Workman Publishing Company, First Edition first Printing, US, 1994
<p><br>One of the funniest and most astutely observed works on the sexes since James Thurber, <i>How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days of Less Using the Secrets of Professional Dog Trainers</i> (over 207,000 copies in print) turns the often-expressed axiom "Men are dogs" into a howling little handbook on men for contemporary women.<p>Doggie Dos and Don'ts&#58; "Gentle strokes and playful petting techniques are positive motivational techniques for rewarding good behavior." And Flight and Chase Behavior&#58; "If your dog is running away from you, the worst thing to do is chase after him . . . remain calm, act like you're having loads of fun without him, and soon he'll be trotting eagerly back." Doggie Dogmas&#58; "Dogs like to eat out of your plate." "It's pointless to compete for the attention of a dog caught up in a ball game." And a quick primer on personality and temperament, from The Sporting Dog (requires daily exercise, gets bored easily, needs lots of attention) to The Hound (instinctually driven to chase and catch nearly anything that moves).<p>With its tongue-in-cheek humor and illustrations that evoke an old Esquire magazine, <i>How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days of Less</i> assures that control will be yours forever, as behavioral problems vanish within twenty-one days. It's guaranteed.</p>

It's Never Too Late to Love a Computer: The Fearless Guide for Seniors by Abby Stokes; illustrations by Jeff Seaver Workman Publishing Company, Incorporated, Rev. ed., New York, New York State, 2005
The fearless guide for seniors, It's Never Too Late to Love a Computer is a reassuring, friendly, straightforward guide that will turn computerphobes into computerphiles. Written specifically for people who did not grow up with personal computers or even use them in the office, it presents everything that older newbies need to know: selecting, buying, and setting up hardware and software; using and adjusting the monitor; getting comfortable with the mouse and keyboard; adding and operating peripherals, such as a printer or scanner. Special sections specifically address the different needs of Mac and Windows users. And then the fun begins, as the book not only shows how to use a computer, but also covers all the reasons why to. Staying in touch with families via e-mail. Looking after stocks. Booking travel plans. Shopping on-line. Researching health issues. Joining newsgroups. Meeting like-minded friends in chat rooms. Not to mention using the computer for other tasks and entertainment, like word processing (finally getting back to that novel) or playing games.

lgli/Matti Friedman - Spies of No Country: Secret Lives at the Birth of Israel (2018, Workman Pub Co).epub
Spies of no country : secret lives at the birth of Israel Friedman, Matti Workman Pub Co, 2018
Spies of No CountryAward-winning writerMatti Friedman’s tale of Israel’s first spies has all the tropes of anespionage novel, including duplicity, betrayal, disguise, clandestinemeetings, the bluff, and the double bluff--but it’s all true. The four spies at the center of this story were part of a ragtag unitknown as the Arab Section, conceived during World War II by Britishspies and Jewish militia leaders in Palestine. Intended to gatherintelligence and carry out sabotage and assassinations, the unitconsisted of Jews who were native to the Arab world and could thuseasily assume Arab identities. In 1948, with Israel’s existence in thebalance during the War of Independence, our spies went undercover inBeirut, where they spent the next two years operating out of a kiosk, collecting intelligence, and sending messages back to Israel via a radio whose antenna was disguised as a clothesline. While performing theirdangerous work these men were often unsure to whom they were reporting, and sometimes even who they’d become. Of the dozen spies in the ArabSection at the war’s outbreak, five were caught and executed. But in the end the Arab Section would emerge, improbably, as the nucleus of theMossad, Israel’s vaunted intelligence agency.Spies of No Country is about the slippery identities of these young spies, but it’s also about Israel’s own complicated and fascinating identity. Israel sees itselfand presents itself as a Western nation, when in fact more than half the country has Middle Eastern roots and traditions, like the spies of this story. And, according to Friedman, that goes a long way towardexplaining the life and politics of the country, and why it oftenbaffles the West. For anyone interested in real-life spies and theparadoxes of the Middle East, Spies of No Country is an intimate story with global significance.

The Best of the Rejection Collection : 293 Cartoons That Were Too Dumb, Too Dark, or Too Naughty for The New Yorker rescued by Matthew Diffee; foreword by Robert Mankoff Workman Pub.; Workman Publishing Company, Hachette Book Group, New York, 2011
It’s the best of the worst: 293 of the funniest cartoons rejected by <i>The New Yorker</i> but luckily for us, now in paperback and available to enjoy. <i>The Rejection Collection</i> brings together some of <i>The New Yorker’s</i> brightest talents—Roz Chast, Gahan Wilson, Sam Gross, Jack Zeigler, David Sipress, and more—and reveals their other side. Their dark side. Their juvenile side. Their sick side. Their naughty side. Their outrageous side. <p>And what a treat. Ventriloquist dummy cartoons. Operating room cartoons. Bring your daughter to work day cartoons (the stripper, the prison guard on death row). Lots of couples in bed, quite a few coffins, wise-cracking animals—an obsessive’s plumbing of the weird, the scary, the off-the-wall, and done so without restraint.</p> <p>Every week <i>The New Yorker</i> receives 500 cartoon submissions, and rejects a great majority—mostly, of course, for not being funny enough. There’s no question why these were rejected, and it’s not for lack of laughs. One can almost hear Eustace Tilley sniffing, <i>We are not amused.</i></p>

What to Expect When You're Expecting : 4th Edition Heidi Murkoff & Sharon Mazel [Murkoff, Heidi & Mazel, Sharon] New York : Workman Pub., c2008., What to expect®, 4th ed, New York, ©2008
Amazon.com ReviewAnnouncing a brand new, cover-to-cover revision of America's pregnancy bible. What to Expect When You're Expecting is a perennial New York Times bestseller and one of USA Today's 25 most influential books of the past 25 years. It's read by more than 90% of pregnant women who read a pregnancy book--the most iconic, must-have book for parents-to-be, with over 14.5 million copies in print. Now comes the Fourth Edition, a new book for a new generation of expectant moms--featuring a new look, a fresh perspective, and a friendlier-than-ever voice. It's filled with the most up-to-date information reflecting not only what's new in pregnancy, but what's relevant to pregnant women. Heidi Murkoff has rewritten every section of the book, answering dozens of new questions and including loads of new asked-for material, such as a detailed week-by-week fetal development section in each of the monthly chapters, an expanded chapter on pre-conception, and a brand new one on carrying multiples. More comprehensive, reassuring, and empathetic than ever, the Fourth Edition incorporates the most recent developments in obstetrics and addresses the most current lifestyle trends (from tattooing and belly piercing to Botox and aromatherapy). There's more than ever on pregnancy matters practical (including an expanded section on workplace concerns), physical (with more symptoms, more solutions), emotional (more advice on riding the mood roller coaster), nutritional (from low-carb to vegan, from junk food–dependent to caffeine-addicted), and sexual (what's hot and what's not in pregnant lovemaking), as well as much more support for that very important partner in parenting, the dad-to-be. Overflowing with tips, helpful hints, and humor (a pregnant woman's best friend), this new edition is more accessible and easier to use than ever before. It's everything parents-to-be have come to expect from What to Expect... only better. Amazon.com ExclusiveAn Essay from Heidi Murkoff What to Expect started with information--or, actually, lack of information. In fact, when I found out I was expecting for the first time--I didn't have the slightest idea of what to expect. And back then, it wasn't as easy to find out what to expect as you'd think. I created What to Expect When You're Expecting because I couldn't find the answers to my questions or the reassurance for my worries that I was searching for in the pregnancy books I read (and believe me, I read plenty). I was a mom on a mission--a mission to help other moms and dads worry less and enjoy their pregnancies (and their babies, and their toddlers) more. And I've been on that mission ever since. So what sent me back to recreate What to Expect--for a fourth time? Today, there's definitely no lack of information on pregnancy. In fact there's more information than ever before (a quick online search of pregnancy or a glance at pages and pages of pregnancy and parenting options right here on Amazon will clue you in on that). But often what's still hard to find is the right kind of information. Information that's accurate yet empathetic, reassuring yet realistic--that empowers you, but doesn't overwhelm or confuse you, that guides you but doesn't dictate to you. And it's not just about the right information, it's about information that's presented in the way that's most helpful--easy to access, easy to digest, easy to use. It's about information that makes your pregnant life less stressful--more enjoyable, and, well, easier. The fourth edition is a new What To Expect for a new generation of readers--you!--and I'm excited to say it's the best What To Expect yet. It's packed with all new information, of course (since things tend to change quickly in the baby-making and baby-delivering business--something you're probably all too aware of already if you've made more than one trip to the birthing room). But it doesn't only take into account what's new in obstetrics and what's new in pregnancy; it takes into account what's relevant to pregnant women now. Lifestyle. Working. Eating on the run. Juggling the pregnant life with real life. Keeping up with relationships. Birthing options that are family friendly and pregnancy care that incorporates the best that complimentary and alternative medicine has to offer. Managing multiples (which more and more moms are carrying). Sorting out the information from the misinformation--the reality from the hype, fact from Internet legend. The fourth edition also takes into account how you likely use books these days, so the format is even more accessible than ever. More geared to in-the-moment, find-it-in-a-flash reading. Most important of all, the fourth edition celebrates pregnancy. I have a passion for pregnancy, and always have. I love moms, I love dads, and I love babies. But everything about this fourth edition from the happy, excited mom-to-be on the cover, proudly caressing her beautiful belly and its even more beautiful contents, to the adorable week-by-week description of the making of your baby, to the positive (yet realistic), mom-to-mom tone throughout--this fourth edition is not just an explanation of those 9 amazing (though often bewildering) months you have ahead of you. It's a celebration of them. What to Expect When You're Expecting fourth edition is everything moms and dads have come to expect from What to Expect... only better. And I can't wait to start sharing it with you. I guess you can say--I'm a proud mama all over again. --Heidi Murkoff More to ExploreFrom Publishers WeeklyMurkoff is back with yet another edition of the indispensable What to Expect When You're Expecting—this time with a largely rewritten and revised edition of the comprehensive guide she introduced 24 years ago. The book has undergone an extensive overhaul, beginning with the cover, which depicts a stylish expectant mom dressed in jeans and a form-fitting shirt—a far cry from the original text's comfy, frumpy mom seated in a rocking chair. Inside, the author has added a number of new features, including a chapter that draws upon current research to steer parents-to-be to a healthier lifestyle even before conception begins, chapters on healthy eating and giving birth to multiples (a growing trend) and expanded sections on working during pregnancy. While the general layout and appearance of the book will be familiar to readers, Murkoff has successfully broadened and sharpened the material while keeping the overall style and presentation intact.
