carried away on the crest of a wave
Yee, David
Playwrights Canada Press, Toronto, 2014
"From the shore of Ko Phi Phi in Thailand to a suburb in Utah to a mysterious Kafkaesque hole in the ground, Carried away on the crest of a wave gives us brief glimpses into the lives of a sphinx-like escort, a grieving father, a conflicted priest, brothers of legend, a felonious housewife, an accountant of time, an orphaned boy, a radio shock jock and a man who finds things. Each are connected, primarily, by the cataclysmic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed the lives of over a quarter of a million people. In a series of vignettes, Carried away on the crest of a wave illustrates the ripple effect of one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history and ponders what happens when the events that bind us together are the same events that tear us apart."

by David Yee
Toronto: Playwrights Canada Press, 1st ed., Toronto, Ontario, 2010

Zuo Tradition / Zuozhuan左傳 : Commentary on the 'Spring and Autumn Annals'
Stephen Durrant; Wai-Yee Li; David Schaberg; Zuo Qiuming
University of Washington Press, Classics of Chinese thought, Seattle, 2016
Zuo Tradition ( Zuozhuan ; sometimes called The Zuo Commentary) is China's first great work of history. It consists of two interwoven texts - the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu, a terse annalistic record) and a vast web of narratives and speeches that add context and interpretation to the Annals. Completed by about 300 BCE, it is the longest and one of the most difficult texts surviving from pre-imperial times. It has been as important to the foundation and preservation of Chinese culture as the historical books of the Hebrew Bible have been to the Jewish and Christian traditions. It has shaped notions of history, justice, and the significance of human action in the Chinese tradition perhaps more so than any comparable work of Latin or Greek historiography has done to Western civilization. This translation, accompanied by the original text, an introduction, and annotations, will finally make Zuozhuan accessible to all.

Distributed data fusion for network-centric operations
David L Hall; et al
CRC Press LLC, CRC Press (Unlimited), Boca Raton, FL, 2013
''Foreword I am very pleased to provide a foreword for this timely work on distributed fusion. I have been involved in fusion research for the last 15 years, focused on transforming data to support more effective decision making. During that time, I have relied heavily on the advice of the editors of this book and many of the chapter authors to help set the directions for Army-focused basic and applied information fusion initiatives. I first met the editors about 12 years ago at an Army-sponsored fusion workshop where it was clear that the issues of increased sensors and data sources, along with the introduction of web-based information architectures, had finally overwhelmed the analysis community. Most of the discussions were focused on the problems. But Dave Hall and Jim Llinas began addressing the solutions. They identified relevant terms and definitions, outlined algorithms for specific fusion tasks, addressed many of the evolving architectural issues, pinpointed key technical barriers, and proposed directions for future research. They clearly were long-time experts in the field; but, more importantly, they were visionary in their recognition of rapidly evolving trends in information management and the impact those trends would have on the field of data fusion. It is, therefore, not at all surprising that this, their latest book (along with colleagues), would be focused on distributed fusion. While there are numerous texts and handbooks on data fusion in general (many written or edited by the editors and authors of this book), there are two major trends that motivate the need for this work. First, the very concept of defense operations has dramatically changed. Modern military missions include, for example, coalitionbased counterinsurgency, counternarcotics,''-- Read more...

Long-Term Care Administration and Management : Effective Practices and Quality Programs in Eldercare

Springer Publishing Company, Incorporated, Springer Publishing Company, Inc., New York, NY, 2014
<p>"This bookís great strength is the way it weaves psychology between events and trends in society. It shows that psychology isnít separate, watching through a one-way mirror, but that psychology and society are threads woven together in the same tapestry. Key theories and ëbig namesí fit into a story that makes sense, and become more human than legend... The writing style is clear and direct; I found myself looking forward to each chapter... [A] highly informative book that would benefit students, psychologists and aspiring psychologists."</p><p align="right"><b>Dr. Francis Quinn</b>, Robert Gordon University<br /><i>The Psychologist</i></p><p>"This slim volume would be a wonderful accompaniment to a traditional text. This reviewer has taught history and theory of psychology for 24 years. In those years, many students have said -- at the end of the course -- 'I wish I had known this stuff at the beginning of my degree.' This volume would fill that need."</p><p align="right"><b>R.E. Osborne</b>, PhD, Texas State University<br />CHOICE</p><p>"In this engaging and highly readable book, Devonis gives readers a 'usable past' ñ an account of key themes and issues that shaped modern American psychology. Much more than a straightforward chronicle of intellectual antecedents, <i>History of Psychology 101</i> situates the field in a wider social and historical context. The book will appeal to both experienced psychologists and those new to the field ñ highly recommended."</p><p align="right"><b>Ian Nicholson</b>, PhD <br />St. Thomas University </p><p>"The author is very knowledgeable of the history of psychology and is uniquely qualified to prepare this book. Dave Devonis has extensive experience teaching students, which is apparent with the way he wrote this book to enhance learning and understanding." </p><p align="right"><b>Laura Koppes Bryan</b>, PhD<br />University of Baltimore </p><p>Spanning the modern development of psychological science and practice-the era most relevant to today's psychologists-this concise overview of psychology's history focuses on how the field has striven to make a positive impact on society and the individuals within it. It not only examines, decade by decade, the key developments in psychology, but goes beyond the usual "schools and systems" approach to illuminate not just how psychological theories developed but how they have been applied and practiced. The text is unique in its focus on connecting the historical development of psychology to present concerns in the field, thus making the information more relevant to today's student. </p><p>Woven throughout the book is thread of optimism regarding the value of psychological ideas for the betterment of humanity. The book considers how psychology has informed-and been influenced by-social and cultural concerns of the past century. Each chapter highlights a theme that typified the science and practice of psychology in a particular era, along with a "historical centerpiece," an examination of an exemplary psychologist or psychological work that typified the field's development during that time period. </p><p><b>Key Features:</b></p><ul><li>Presents a concise, accessible overview of the modern history of psychology </li><li>Goes beyond the usual "schools and systems" approach to focus on how psychological theories were developed, applied, and practiced </li><li>Demonstrates how the field of psychology has endeavored to make a positive impact on society and individuals </li><li>Focuses on making historical information relevant to psychological practice today </li><li>Embeds psychology in the social and cultural milieu of each era </li></ul>

The contributors represent a broad array of theological commitmentProtestants, Catholics, Jews, and others. The introductory articles and section introductions in the volume discuss the dramatic challenges that have shaped contemporary interpretation of the Old Testament and Apocrypha. Individual book articles provide an introduction and commentary on key sense units that are explored through the lenses of three critical questions: The text in its ancient context. What did the text probably mean in its original historical and cultural context? The text in the interpretive tradition. How have centuries of reading and interpreting shaped our understanding of the text? The text in contemporary discussion. What are the unique challenges and interpretive questions that arise for readers and hearers of the text today? The result is a commentary that is comprehensive and useful for preaching, teaching, and research.

Stories to go : Spring
Wong Herbert Yee; Tomie DePaola; Leslie Patricelli; Shutta Crum; Manya Stojic; JoAnn Early Macken; David Conway; Jude Daly; Eric Carle
assembled by East Flagstaff Community Library, 1st, First Edition, PS, 2007
<p><P><b>It's time to put on your rain gear for a rainy-day romp!</b><P><b></b><P>With spring come April showers. It's time to put on a raincoat, grab an umbrella, and head outdoors. The worms like rain, and so do the fish and frogs. But what about the cat and dog? In this lyrical picture book, one spunky little girl discovers just who likes rain—and who doesn't—as she explores the rainy-day habits of the world around her. <P>Here is the second offering in Wong Herbert Yee's charming seasonal quartet. The simple text and interactive question-and-answer format make this book perfect for reading aloud with preschoolers any time of the year.</p><h3>Publishers Weekly</h3><p><P>To the child who is stuck indoors at the mercy of Mother Nature, rain doesn't appear to be all that wonderful. But to the imaginative girl at the heart of this tale, it's a source of wonderment and the key to unearthing a soggy world where creatures thrive in wet weather. The delicate phrases of Yee's (<I>Upstairs Mouse, Downstairs Mole</I>) loose, lyric verse recall the pitter patter of raindrops ("Who likes rain?/ Not Papa's old truck./ Who likes rain?/ Quack, quack.... It's a duck!"). But as the girl soon discovers, rain can also command a more demonstrative presence ("Pitty-plip-PLOP, Pitty-pat-SPLAT!/ I can catch raindrops in my hat"). His gorgeously textured colored pencil illustrations build on this liveliness, from the drain spout gushing a torrent of water and leaves, to the girl (in her bright yellow slicker) chasing her wayward umbrella across a field. As she explores the wet world around her, readers too learn that while rain may be a deterrent for some, it serves a purpose for the quacking duck or the frog that frolics in the "muckety-muck." And when the rain finally ceases, the girl finds a way to embrace its remains. This delightful story is the perfect panacea for the rainy-day blues and, in turn, creates its own bright spot. Ages 2-6. <I>(Apr.)</I></P>Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information</p>

THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS, 1992, 1992
<p><P>By developing the broadest and most inclusive definition of the term map ever adopted in the history of cartography, this inaugural volume of the <i>History of Cartography</i> series has helped redefine the way maps are studied and understood by scholars in a number of disciplines.<br><br>Volume One addresses the prehistorical and historical mapping traditions of premodern Europe and the Mediterranean world. A substantial introductory essay surveys the historiography and theoretical development of the history of cartography and situates the work of the multi-volume series within this scholarly tradition. Cartographic themes include an emphasis on the spatial-cognitive abilities of Europe's prehistoric peoples and their transmission of cartographic concepts through media such as rock art; the emphasis on mensuration, land surveys, and architectural plans in the cartography of Ancient Egypt and the Near East; the emergence of both theoretical and practical cartographic knowledge in the Greco-Roman world; and the parallel existence of diverse mapping traditions (<i>mappaemundi</i>, portolan charts, local and regional cartography) in the Medieval period.<br><br>Throughout the volume, a commitment to include cosmographical and celestial maps underscores the inclusive definition of map and sets the tone for the breadth of scholarship found in later volumes of the series.</p>
