The politics of Aristotle Translated with an introd., notes, and appendixes by Ernest Barker New York, Oxford University Press, New York, New York State, 1958
"This new translation of one of the fundamental texts of Western political thought combines strict fidelity to Aristotle's Greek with a contemporary English prose style. Lord's intention throughout is to retain Aristotle's distinctive style. The accompanying notes provide literary and historical references, call attention to textual problems, and supply other essential information and interpretation. A glossary supplies working definitions of key terms in Aristotle's philosophical-political vocabulary as well as a guide to linguistic relationships that are not always reflected in equivalent English terms. Lord's extensive introduction presents a detailed account of Aristotle's life in relation to the political situation and events of his time and then discusses the problematic character and history of Aristotle's writings in general and of the Politics in particular. Lord also outlines Aristotle's conception of political science, tracing its relation to theoretical science on the one hand and to ethics on the other. In conclusion, he briefly traces the subsequent history and influence of the Politics up to modern times."--Publisher's description.

Politics The politics of Aristotle translated with an introduction notes and appendixes by Ernest Barker Oxford at the Clarendon Press,, Oxford University Press paperback, London, New York, England, 1972

a Touchstone In Western Debates About Society And Government, The politics Is Aristotle's Classic Work On The Nature Of Political Community. Here, He Argues That People Band Together Into Political Communities To Secure A Good And Self-sufficient Life. He Discusses The Merits And Defects Of Various Regimes Or Ways Of Organizing Political Community—democracy In Particular—and In The Process Examines Such Subjects As Slavery, Economics, The Family, Citizenship, Justice, And Revolution.
peter Simpson Offers A New Translation Of Aristotle's Text From The Ancient Greek. He Renders The politics Into An English Version That Is Accurate, Readable, And In Certain Difficult Passages, Original. His Innovative Analytical Division Of The Whole Text, With Headings And Accompanying Summaries, Makes Clear The Progression And Unity Of The Argument—a Helpful Feature For Students Or Readers Unfamiliar With Aristotle's Studied Brevity And Often Elliptical Style. Books 7 And 8 Are Repositioned—a Move Supported By Aristotle's Own Words And Much Scholarly Opinion—to Restore The Work's Logical Organization And Coherence. Finally, Simpson Places The politics In Its Proper Philosophical Context By Beginning The Text With The Last Chapter Of Aristotle's nicomachean Ethics, Which He Sees As An Introduction To What Follows.

library Journal

the Past Few Years Have Seen A Spate Of New Translations Of Classic Texts In Philosophy, In Part Because Of More Complete Texts On Which To Base The Translations And In Part Because Of A Desire To Render The Texts In A More Contemporary English. Simpson (classics And Philosophy, Cuny) Has Produced A Fresh And Lively Translation That Is Perhaps More Logically Ordered. He Makes A Strong Case For Rearranging The Standard Order Of The Books Of The Politics To Provide A Sequence More In Keeping With Aristotle's Intentions, Positioning Books 7 And 8 To Follow Book 3. The Text Begins With A Translation Of Book 10, Chapter 9 Of The Nicomachean Ethics, Which Simpson Argues Is A Precursor To The Politics. A Comparison With Standard Translations, Such As Those Of Jowett And Barker, Indicates That Simpson Put Much Effort Into This Version And Clarified A Number Of Points That Earlier Translations Left Unclear. An Excellent Addition To All Academic And Major Public Libraries.terry C. Skeats, Bishop's Univ. Lib., Lennoxville, Quebec

The Politics Aristotle;Barker, Ernest;Stalley, R. F IRL Press at Oxford University Press, Oxford World's Classics, 2020
IN preparing his translation of the Politics Sir Ernest Barker sought to produce a version in a modern idiom which could be used by students in a wide range of disciplines. It is a mark of his success in achieving this aim that the translation is still widely recommended almost fifty years after it was first published. However, in preparing an edition for the World’s Classics series I have taken the opportunity for some fairly drastic revision. The most notable change is the elimination of a very large number of passages where Barker expanded his translation by adding words in square brackets which did not represent anything in the Greek text but which helped to clarify what he took to be Aristotle’s meaning. While Barker’s expansions were often very helpful they made it very difficult for the reader to distinguish what was being attributed to Aristotle from what were, in effect, Barker’s own comments. I have therefore deleted Barker’s additions except in a small number of passages where it was impossible to produce an intelligible version without some addition. In many cases this has involved a substantial rewriting of the relevant passages. I have also revised many other passages to bring them closer to the Greek or toremove expressions which are no longer in current English use or which might mislead the modern reader. I have not, however, attempted any wholesale modernization of Barker’s style, which is in general elegant and intelligible. Where possible, I have tried to achieve a greater consistency in the translation of key terms.

The Politics Aristotle, R. F. Stalley, Ernest Barker IRL Press at Oxford University Press, Oxford world's classics, Oxford world's classics (Oxford University Press), Oxford, New York, England, 1998
The Politics is one of the most influential texts in the history of political thought, and it raises issues which still confront anyone who wants to think seriously about the ways in which human societies are organized and governed. The work of one of the world's greatest philosophers, it draws on Aristotle's own great knowledge of the political and constitutional affairs of the Greek cities. By examining the way societies are run - from households to city states - Aristotle establishes how successful constitutions can best be initiated and upheld. For this edition Sir Ernest Barker's fine translation, which has been widely used for nearly half a century, has been extensively revised to meet the needs of the modern reader. The accessible introduction and clear notes by R F Stalley examine the historical and philosophical background of the work and discuss its significance for modern political thought. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Politics The politics of Aristotle Barnes, Jonathan, Aristotle Oxford University Press, USA, December 31, 1962
Aristotle's Politics is a key document in Western political thought. In these first two books Aristotle shows his complete mastery of political theory and practice, and raises many crucial issues still with us today. In Book I he argues vigorously for a political theory based on 'nature'. By nature, man is a 'political animal', one naturally fitted for life in a polis or state. Some people, however, are natural slaves; and women are by nature subordinate to men. Acquisition and exchange are natural, but not trading for profit. In Book II he launches a sharp attack on Plato's two 'utopias', the Republic and the Laws, and also criticizes three historical states reputed to be well governed: Sparta, Crete, and Carthage. This volume contains a close translation of these two books, together with a philosophical commentary. It is well suited to the requirements of readers who do not know Greek.Wörter : 1491361
