The Complete Plays of William Shakespeare and Selected Verse from the Plays (Chatham River Press Paperback Library) with an introduction by Sir Ernest Barker; illustrations by John Gilbert and Ray Abel Random House Value Publishing, Chatham River Press Paperback Library, 1984 edition (a), New York, USA, New York State, 1984
Why has the work of this modest Elizabethan actor and playwright survived over the centuries and across continents? It is because, even for the modern reader, Shakespeare's wit, immediacy of action, lively plots, and subtle characterisations make him infinitely accessible and continually captivating. The Complete Plays of William Shakespeare contains all thirty-seven plays written by this brilliant playwright. The light and whimsical comedies, stirring histories, and profound and cathartic tragedies are true classics that are treasured throughout the world. This magnificent collection brings to the reader of all Shakespeare's memorable characters including Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, Richard III, Hamlet, Antony andCleopatra, and King Henry VIII--characters who stand as vivid today as when Shakespeare first set pen to paper more than three centuries ago. These splendid works are accompanied by precise and eloquent black-and-white line illustrations, making this an attractive volume that brings Shakespeare's popular and enduring plays as close as the nearest bookshelf. --back cover

The Politics (The World's Classics) Aristotle; translated by Sir Ernest Barker; revised with an introduction and notes by R.F. Stalley Oxford ; New York: Oxford University Press, Oxford world's classics (Oxford University Press), Oxford, 1998
"This new translation of one of the fundamental texts of Western political thought combines strict fidelity to Aristotle's Greek with a contemporary English prose style. Lord's intention throughout is to retain Aristotle's distinctive style. The accompanying notes provide literary and historical references, call attention to textual problems, and supply other essential information and interpretation. A glossary supplies working definitions of key terms in Aristotle's philosophical-political vocabulary as well as a guide to linguistic relationships that are not always reflected in equivalent English terms. Lord's extensive introduction presents a detailed account of Aristotle's life in relation to the political situation and events of his time and then discusses the problematic character and history of Aristotle's writings in general and of the Politics in particular. Lord also outlines Aristotle's conception of political science, tracing its relation to theoretical science on the one hand and to ethics on the other. In conclusion, he briefly traces the subsequent history and influence of the Politics up to modern times."--Publisher's description.

Englishness and the Study of Politics: The Social and Political Thought of Ernest Barker (Ideas in Context) Stapleton, Julia Cambridge [England] ; New York: Cambridge University Press, Ideas in context, 32, Cambridge [England] ; New York, 1994
The definition of <'Englishness>' has become the subject of considerable debate, and in this important contribution to Ideas in Context Julia Stapleton looks at the work of one of the most wide- ranging and influential theorists of the English nation, Ernest Barker. The first holder of the Chair of Political Science at Cambridge, Barker wrote prolifically on the history of political thought and contemporary political theory, and his writings are notable for fusing three of the dominant strands of late- nineteenth and early-twentieth century political thought, Whiggism, Idealism and Pluralism. Infused with a strong cultural sense of nationhood, Barker>'s writings influenced a broad non-academic audience, and their subsequent neglect graphically demonstrates the fate of a certain vision of Liberal England in the generation after World War One. With, however, the erosion of a particular sense of Englishness, Barker>'s ideas have begun to assume renewed resonance.

The Politics (Oxford World's Classics) Aristotle & R. F. Stalley & Ernest Barker [Aristotle & Stalley, R. F. & Barker, Ernest] Oxford University Press, UK, Reissue, 1998
The Politics is one of the most influential texts in the history of political thought, and it raises issues which still confront anyone who wants to think seriously about the ways in which human societies are organized and governed. By examining the way societies are run--from households to city states--Aristotle establishes how successful constitutions can best be initiated and upheld. For this edition, Sir Ernest Barker's fine translation, which has been widely used for nearly half a century, has been extensively revised to meet the needs of the modern reader. The accessible introduction and clear notes examine the historical and philosophical background of the work and discuss its significance for modern political thought.About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.**

The Political Thought of Plato and Aristotle Ernest Barker, Sir Dover Publications, Incorporated, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2012
This clear and accurate exposition of Greek political thought offers a comprehensive exploration of the works of Plato and Aristotle. Students of political science and the history of Western philosophy will appreciate its insights into the sources of state power, the nature of political organization, the aims of the state, citizenship, justice, law, and related concepts. In addition to point-by-point discussions of Plato's Republic and Aristotle's Politics, this survey presents critical examinations of several of Plato's other dialogues along with Aristotle's Ethics. Further, it considers the origin of these ideas in the Greek political experience and in the contributions of other Greek theorists, including Heraclitus, Pythagoras, the Cyrenaics, and the Encyclopaedists. This classic of scholarship also includes epilogues that discuss the influence of Greek political ideas on such thinkers as Aquinas, Marsilio of Padua, Machiavelli, Spinoza, Hobbes, Rousseau, and Hegel.

The Politics of Aristotle translated, with an introduction, notes and appendixes, by Ernest Barker .. The Clarendon Press, Oxford, England, 1946

The Politics (Oxford World's Classics) Aristotle; translated by Ernest Barker; introduction and notes by R.F. Stalley IRL Press at Oxford University Press, Reissue, 1998
The Politics is one of the most influential texts in the history of political thought, and it raises issues which still confront anyone who wants to think seriously about the ways in which human societies are organized and governed. The work of one of the world's greatest philosophers, it draws on Aristotle's own great knowledge of the political and constitutional affairs of the Greek cities. For this edition Sir Ernest Barker's fine translation, which has been widely used for nearly half a century, has been extensively revised to meet the needs of the modern reader.
