The Rivers of Florida Robert J. Livingston, Edward A. Fernald (auth.), Robert J. Livingston (eds.) Springer-Verlag New York, LLC, Ecological Studies, Ecological Studies 83, 1, 1991
This book addresses basic questions concerning the ecological relationships and current conditions of the major river systems in Florida . . There have been relatively few comprehensive studies made of the rivers of Florida. There is, to be sure, voluminous information that addresses various aspects of riverine ecology. However, little such information has been collected in a way that allows even a preliminary understanding of the driving forces that determine how the diverse freshwater and associated brackish systems function. This lack of useful data is the product of a fundamental ignorance concerning the scale of endeavor, both spatially and temporally, that is needed if we are to understand and, parenthetically, manage the major drainage systems of this area of the country (Livingston, 1987). Research used to address management problems should entail a continuous series of interrelated studies, descriptive and experimental, that answer the immediate (and often less important) questions that are asked on a day-to-day basis. The research should also be designed to answer questions that have not yet been asked. In other words, ecosystem research should be organized on an appropriate scale so that system-wide processes are understood and pr Erscheinungsdatum: 30.09.2011

Glioma principles and practice in neuro-oncology ; with 38 tablers A. B. M. F. Karim, J. H. Kralendonk (auth.), Dr. A. B. M. F. Karim, Dr. Edward R. Laws Jr. (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, 1, 1991
Many recent developments in neuro-oncology relevant to clinical practice have contributed to improved patient care. The most im portant impact of these developments on treatment may have been a change in the attitudes of the neuro-oncologists involved in making decisions regarding patients with gliomas. From an era of uncertainty which led to therapeutic nihilism, we have entered one of active interventions based on objective parameters for the treat ment of gliomas, which may be either slow-growing or rapid kil lers. The histopathological characteristics of gliomatous lesions are intriguing, and it is only recently that a clearer picture has begun to emerge. A group of dedicated neuropathologists has been at tempting to reach a consensus on pathological classification and grading, providing an important landmark in the field of neuro oncology. This book does not mean to provide exhaustive details on the histopathology of gliomas, but rather highlights the main problems in an authoritative chapter. This chapter attempts to guide the reader to a better understanding of all aspects of the neuropathology of glioma. Neuroradiology has recently seen several breakthroughs. Im ages unimaginable a decade ago are now providing us with an al most three-dimensional impression. But the concomitant illusions and artifacts must also be kept in mind, and pragmatic ideas are carefully put forward in this book about the developing body of knowledge concerning the newer imaging techniques. Introduction to Mathematics for Life Scientists Professor Dr. Edward Batschelet (auth.) Springer Berlin Heidelberg, Special soft cover edition of Vol. 2 of the series: Biomathematics 2nd, 1971
A few decades ago mathematics played a modest role in life sciences. Today, however, a great variety of mathematical methods is applied in biology and medicine. Practically every mathematical procedure that is useful in physics, chemistry, engineering, and economics has also found an important application in the life sciences. The past and present training of life scientists does by no means reflect this development. However, the impact of the fast growing number of applications of mathematical methods makes it indispensable that students in the life sciences are offered a basic training in mathematics, both on the undergraduate and the graduate level. This book is primarily designed as a textbook for an introductory course. Life scientists may also use it as a reference to find mathematical methods suitable to their research problems. Moreover, the book should be appropriate for self-teaching. It will also be a guide for teachers. Numerous references are included to assist the reader in his search for the pertinent literature.

Internationalization and Economic Policy Reforms in Transition Countries Edward M. Graham, Nina Oding (auth.), Dr. Edward Graham, Dr. Nina Oding, Professor Dr. Paul J.J. Welfens (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, 1 edition, September 21, 2005
Edward M. Graham, Nina Oding and Paul J. J. Welfens Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union have achieved sustained economic growth in first half of the new decade in the 2V^ century. EU ac cession countries which have joined the EU have benefited mainly from high capital inflows, a reduced risk premium - with shadow effects of this already occurring in the years before explicit membership - and growing trade. While system transformation has undermined trade between Eastern Europe and Russia for several years there are medium prospects for grow ing trade in the whole of Europe. Russia's case, however, is different from the EU accession countries as a major driving force of economic dynamics is the oil and gas sector which has considerable backward and forward linkages. At the same time this sector apparently is politically quite sensi tive. The Transatlantic Transformation and Economic Development Re search Group has organized several workshops within a major interna tional research project. The project is devoted to analyzing the internatio nalization of the Russian economy and the associated changes in major policy fields. This book contains the revised analytical papers from the St. Petersburg conference in 2003 when the city celebrated its 300 year anniversary. We are very grateful to the Leontief Center for excellent organization of the conference. The paper by Paul J. J. Erscheinungsdatum: 22.08.2005

Simulation and Visualization on the Grid : Parallelldatorcentrum Kungl Tekniska Högskolan Seventh Annual Conference Stockholm, Sweden December 1999 Proceedings Werner Benger, Hans-Christian Hege, André Merzky, Thomas Radke, Edward Seidel (auth.), Björn Engquist, Lennart Johnsson, Michael Hammill, Faith Short (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Lecture Notes in Computational Science and Engineering, Lecture Notes in Computational Science and Engineering 13, 1, 2000
It is now 30 years since the network for digital communication, the ARPA-net, first came into operation. Since the first experiments with sending electronic mail and performing file transfers, the development of networks has been truly remarkable. Today's Internet continues to develop at an exponential rate that even surpasses that of computing and storage technologies. About five years after being commercialized, it has become as pervasive as the tele phone had become 30 years after its initial deployment. In the United States, the size of the Internet industry already exceeds that of the auto industry, which has been in existence for about 100 years. The exponentially increas ing capabilities of communication, computing, and storage systems is also reshaping the way science and engineering are pursued. Large-scale simulation studies in chemistry, physics, engineering, and sev eral other disciplines may now produce data sets of ,several terabytes or petabytes. Similarly, almost all measurements today produce data in digital form, whether from collections of sensors, three-dimensional digital images, or video. These data sets often represent complex phenomena that require rich visualization capabilities and efficient data-mining techniques to under stand. Furthermore, the data may be produced and archived in several differ ent locations, and the analysis carried out by teams with members at several locations-possibly distinct from those with significant storage, computation, or visualization facilities. The emerging computational Grids enable the transparent use of remote instruments, computational and data resources. Erscheinungsdatum: 21.06.2000

Antibiotics Containing The Beta-lactam Structure, Part 2 (handbook Of Experimental Pharmacology) A.L.DEMAIN N.A.SOLOMON, E. P Abraham, Arnold L Demain, Gustav V. R Born, A. L Demain, N. A Solomon, Paul Actor, Springer Springer Spektrum. in Springer-Verlag GmbH, 1983, 1983
It is quite amazing that the oldest group of medically useful antibiotics, the fJ-Iactams, are still providing basic microbiologists, biochemists, and clinicians with surprises over 50 years after Fleming's discovery of penicillin production by Penicillium. By the end of the 1950s, the future of the penicillins seemed doubtful as resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus began to increase in hospital populations. However, the development of semisynthetic penicillins provided new structures with resistance to penicillinase and with broad-spectrum activity. In the 1960s, the discovery of cephalosporin C production by Cephalosporium and its conversion to valuable broad-spectrum antibiotics by semisynthetic means excited the world of chemotherapy. In the early 1970s, the 40-year-old notion that fJ-Iactams were produced only by fungi was destroyed by the discovery of cephamycin production by Streptomyces. Again this basic discovery was exploited by the deVelopment of the semisynthetic cefoxitin, which has even broader activity than earlier fJ-Iactams. Later in the 1970s came the discoveries of nocardicins from Nocardia, clavulanic acid from Streptomyces, and the carbapenems from Streptomyces. Now in the 1980s we learn that fJ-Iactams are produced even by unicellular bacteria and that semisynthetic derivatives of these monobactams may find their way into medicine. Indeed, the future of the prolific fJ-Iactam family seems brighter with each passing decade.

Need-to-Know Technologies for a Successful Future James Edward Keogh; Jim Keogh De|G Press, 2018 dec 17
__Need-to-know Technologies for a Successful Future__ provides the necessary knowledge you must have to succeed in your career. It is meant to introduce you to the terms and technologies that you need to know to be successful in business and jobs related to technology. This unusual book was designed to teach a motivated reader about hundreds of technologies and business processes that are important today if you want to succeed. Its goal is to give you a broad understanding of an amazing array of topics. This book is a preparation for life in business today. It’s not an encyclopedia, but it is arranged to make digesting this information as efficient and effective as possible. It caters to two audiences: those who need to know the basics of technology and business to get a high paying job and those who need to know about technology to do their job more effectively, especially as managers. It is not too deep, but covers a broad spectrum of content that you may need to know. As such, it is a starting point for more investigation if a specific area is of interest. It is the perfect book for someone planning to become a programmer or IT specialist who does not yet have the proper background. For managers, it addresses the topics you need to know to talk intelligently to your IT staff and programmers, to vendors and to designers. You will learn the basics of hundreds of technologies that impact business today. If you are just looking to begin or change a career or going to college and you want a broad understanding or what can be expected of you when you are faced with getting a job or will want to learn at school, then that is the role of this book. As people have turned to the internet as their primary source of information, this has led to major gaps in the knowledge of workers at all levels. You have to know what you need to know to be able to learn __what you need to know__. If you know specifically what you are looking for and are not too worried about detail, then searching online or watching YouTube videos can be a quick solution. But, if you want to learn to program, go into any technical profession or learn what you need to know to be a manager today, then the internet is a poor solution. We are inefficient time-wasting learners and will burn massive amounts of time searching the net for piecemeal information. Need-to-know Technologies for a Successful Future is the solution to this problem. Jim Keogh, an assistant professor at New York University and a faculty member at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, New Jersey, as well as a former faculty member and chair of the e-commerce track of study at Columbia University, delves into the technological knowledge you must have to get a job or advance in your career including understanding computer technology, artificial intelligence, the Cloud, and new horizons in integrated computer technology. .

This volume focuses on the representation of the recent past in classical Athenian oratory and investigates the ability of the orators to interpret it according to their interests; the inability of the Athenians to make an objective assessment of it; and the unwillingness of the citizens to hear the truth, make self-criticism and take responsibility for bad results. Twenty-eight scholars have written chapters to this end, dealing with a wide range of themes, in terms both of contents and of chronology, from the fifth to the fourth century B.C. Each contributor has written a chapter that analyzes one or more historical events mentioned or alluded in the corpus of the Attic orators and covers the three species of Attic oratory. Chapters that treat other issues collectively are also included. The common feature of each contribution is an outline of the recent events that took place and influenced the citizens and/or the city of Athens and its juxtaposition with their rhetorical treatment by the orators either by comparing the rhetorical texts with the historical sources and/or by examining the rhetorical means through which the speakers model the recent past. This book aims at advanced students and professional scholars. This volume focuses on the representation of the recent past in classical Athenian oratory and investigates: the ability of the orators to interpret it according to their interests; the inability of the Athenians to make an objective assessment of persons and events of the recent past and their unwillingness to hear the truth, make self-criticism and take responsibility for bad results. nexusstc/Distributed Intelligent Systems: A Coordination Perspective/3008de68ba4ee6b5ac9d165c1703c83b.pdf
Distributed intelligent systems : a coordination perspective Abdellah Bedrouni, Ranjeev Mittu, A. Boukhtouta, Jean Berger (auth.) Springer Science+Business Media, 1, 20090812
Distributed Intelligent Systems: A Coordination Perspective addresses and comprehensively answers commonly asked questions about coordination in agent-oriented distributed systems. Characterizing the state-of-the-art research in the field of coordination with regard to the development of distributed agent-oriented systems is a particularly complex endeavour, as the space of available approaches is indeed considerable, and research is independently conducted in a great number of domains. While existing books deal with specific aspects of coordination, the major contribution of this book lies in the attempt to provide an in-depth review covering a wide range of issues regarding multi-agent coordination in Distributed Artificial Intelligence. In addition to reporting various sources of confusion, this book outlines the existence of a plethora of strategies and techniques adapted to different problems, agent-oriented systems, environments, and domains. In short, the current book identifies the absence of a single unified approach in addressing multi-agent coordination problems arising in any system or organization. This book, written by world-class leaders in this field, dedicates itself to providing a state-of-the-art review of current coordination strategies and techniques. The book also describes a broad range of application domains which implement many of the coordination strategies and techniques from the field of multi-agent systems. The application domains include defense, transportation, health care, telecommunication and e-business. Based on current practical deployed applications and existing capabilities, this book also identifies and thoroughly examines trends, challenges, and future agent-oriented research directions. Key features: Unveils the lack of coherence and order that characterizes the area of research pertaining to coordination of distributed intelligent systems Examines coordination models, frameworks, strategies and techniques to enable the development of distributed intelligent agent-oriented systems. Provides specific recommendations to realize more widespread deployment of agent-based systems Distributed Intelligent Systems: A Coordination Perspective is designed for a professional audience composed of practitioners and researchers in industry. This book is also suitable as a reference or secondary textbook for advanced-level students in computer science and engineering.

Structures on the Move: Technologies of Governance in Transcultural Encounter (Transcultural Research – Heidelberg Studies on Asia and Europe in a Global Context Book 2) Antje Flüchter (auth.), Antje Flüchter, Susan Richter (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Transcultural Research – Heidelberg Studies on Asia and Europe in a Global Context, Transcultural Research – Heidelberg Studies on Asia and Europe in a Global Context, 1, 2012
This book enters new territory by moving toward a new conceptual framework for comparative and interdisciplinary research on transcultural state formation. Once more, statehood and governance are highly discussed topics, whereby modern state building is often considered to be a genuinely European characteristic, despite the fact that early modern Europeans knew of, experienced and grappled with highly developed states in Asia. The articles collected in this book discuss how strategies of governance were part of transcultural transfers between the two continents. The first part presents and discusses concepts of statehood in order to provide a set of conceptual tools for analyzing the transcultural appropriation of governmental strategies. The second part is concerned with case studies that examine the transcultural perception of governance, and the third and final part gathers perspectives on political practice in transcultural encounters (e.g. military, administration, and diplomacy)

Nonhuman Primates I: Volume 1 (monographs On Pathology Of Laboratory Animals) (v. 1) Thomas C. Jones (editor), Ulrich Mohr (editor), Ronald D. Hunt (editor) Springer-Verlag ; Distribution rights for North America, Canada, and Mexico by ILSI, Springer Nature, Berlin, 1993
The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was estab lished in 1978 to stimulate and support scientific research and educational programs related to nutrition, toxicology, and food safety, and to encourage cooperation in these programs among scientists in universities, industry, and government agencies to assist in the resolution of health and safety issues. To supplement and enhance these efforts, ILSI has made a major commitment to supporting programs to harmonize toxicologic testing, to advance a more uniform interpreta tion of bioassay results worldwide, to promote a common understanding of lesion classifications, and to encourage wide discussion of these topics among scientists. The M on ographs on the Pathology of Laboratory Animals are de signed to facilitate communication among those involved in the safety testing of foods, drugs, and chemicals. The complete set will cover all organ systems and is intended for use by pathologists, toxicologists, and others con cerned with evaluating toxicity and carcinogenicity stud ies. The international nature of the project - as reflected in the composition of the editorial board and the diversity of the authors and editors - strengthens our expectations that understanding and cooperation will be improved worldwide through the series. Alex Malaspina President International Life Sciences Institute Preface This book on nonhuman primate pathology is the 12th volume of a set of monographs prepared under the sponsorship of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI).

Supplementary volumes, 133, S.l.] :, 2022
