The Complete Supernatural Stories: Ambrose Bierce Ambrose Bierce Dark Chaos, 2019
Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914) was an american editorialist, journalist, short story writer, fabulist and satirist. Bierce employed a distinctive style of writing, especially in his stories. This style often embraces an abrupt beginning, dark imagery, vague references to time, limited descriptions, the theme of war, and impossible events. He was considered a master of “Pure” English by his contemporaries, and virtually everything that came from his pen was notable for its judicious wording and economy of style. He wrote in a variety of literary genres. His short stories are held among the best of the 19th century, providing a popular following based on his roots. For his horror writing, Michael Dirda ranked him alongside Edgar Allan Poe and H. P. Lovecraft.Pages : 307Words : 96,755

lgli/Ambrose Bierce _ A Biography - Richard O'Connor.pdf
Ambrose Bierce : A Biography Richard O'Connor Little, Brown & Co., 1967
They called him “Almighty God Bierce.” While he lived, America writhed under his Jovian glance and the ceaseless probings of his malicious pen. In death, the strangeness of his life and art persisted as a powerful influence on the American imagination. Even today, Ambrose Bierce stands second only to Poe as a master of the macabre, second to none in the savageness of his words and wit. The Civil War was the making of Bierce, and it was during this violent half-decade that the handsome, ambitious farmboy came of age both emotionally and intellectually. As the war tested Bierce’s courage and fortitude under fire, as it removed the last of his romantic notions about the meaning of existence, so did it awaken in him a kind of passionate contempt for human weakness and venality and a vastly expanded understanding of his own potentialities. “Almighty God Bierce” was the chief bane and adornment of the San Francisco literary and journalistic scene from 1876 to his departure for Washington in 1896. Like H. L. Mencken, whom he influenced so deeply, Bierce respected no man, no God, no thing, and his column “Prattle” in the San Francisco Examiner has been called “the source of the most scorching wit, irony, satire, and bludgeoning ever printed by an American newspaper.” When Bierce assayed the Washington scene, the entire capital fled for cover. Bierce’s years in Washington saw him at the high tide of his fame, but they did not make up for the total disaster which was his personal life. A terrible father and long since absent husband, Bierce bore a heavy responsibility for his eldest son’s suicide at sixteen and for his younger son’s death of acute alcoholism at thirty. Only Bierce’s daughter Helen stayed by him to the end. In 1912, after three years of fitful retirement from the literary scene, Bierce journeyed to Mexico with no apparent object in view. The last word ever heard from Bierce came in the much quoted letter he posted from Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1913: “If you hear of my being stood up against a Mexican wall and shot to rags, please know that I think it’s a pretty good way to depart this life. It beats old age, disease, or falling down the cellar stairs. To be a Gringo in Mexico — ah, that is euthanasia.’’ As Richard O’Connor demonstrates in this, the first full study of Ambrose Bierce since 1929, Bierce deserves far greater recognition than contemporary literary scholars have given him. His influence on such writers as Stephen Crane, Mencken, and Sinclair Lewis was deep and lasting. His Civil War stories are the work of the only important writer who actually fought in the war. His brutal wit and perverse sense of humor make him the legitimate progenitor of the Black Humorists of today. Ambrose Bierce could not be more compellingly readable. To read about this widely talented and embittered man is to understand with increased vividness the dark side of the American mind — a side that has gotten no lighter or less disturbing with the passage of years. Richard O’Connor began writing at the age of seventeen as a newspaper reporter, and since then has written many fiction and nonfiction books. His most recent include biographies of Jack London and Bret Harte.

Ambrose Bierce and the Queen of Spades Hall, Oakley 1998
The arrival in San Francisco of three beautiful young suffragists could be linked to the murder of Reverend Divine, a famed advocate of spiritualism, the female vote, and temperance, and Ambrose Bierce and Tom Redmond join forces to investigate a possible dark side to the three girls--free love, a harem, and some of San Francisco's leading citizens with dark pasts to hide.

Civil War Stories (Dover Thrift Edition) Bierce, Ambrose Courier Corporation, 2012
Former slave, impassioned abolitionist, brilliant writer, newspaper editor and eloquent orator whose speeches fired the abolitionist cause, Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) led an astounding life. Physical abuse, deprivation and tragedy plagued his early years, yet through sheer force of character he was able to overcome these obstacles to become a leading spokesman for his people. In this, the first and most frequently read of his three autobiographies, Douglass provides graphic descriptions of his childhood and horrifying experiences as a slave as well as a harrowing record of his dramatic escape to the North and eventual freedom. Published in 1845 to quell doubts about his origins — since few slaves of that period could write — the Narrative is admired today for its extraordinary passion, sensitive and vivid descriptions and storytelling power. It belongs in the library of anyone interested in African-American history and the life of one of the country's most courageous and influential champions of civil rights. A selection of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

Tales of Soldiers and Civilians is a collection of short stories by American Civil War soldier, wit, and writer Ambrose Bierce, also published under the title In the Midst of Life. With a stated publication date of 1891 (but actually published in early 1892 the stories describe unusual incidents in the lives of soldiers and civilians during the American Civil War. Tales of Soldiers and Civilians was named by the Grolier Club as one of the 100 most influential American books printed before 1900, stating "These short stories are among the finest, and best known, in American literature. ... Tales of Soldiers and Civilians: and Other Stories (Penguin Classics) Bierce, Ambrose; Quirk, Tom Penguin Group US, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 2000
Questing after Pancho Villa's revolutionary forces, Ambrose Bierce rode into Mexico in 1913 and was never seen again. He left behind him the Devil's Dictionary  and a remarkable body of short fiction. This new collection gathers some of Bierce's finest stories, including the celebrated Civil War fictions ' An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge ' and ' Chickamauga ', his macabre masterpieces, and his tales of supernatural horror. Reminiscent of Poe, these stories are marked by a sardonic humour and a realistic study of tense emotional states. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

The Collected Works Of Ambrose Bierce, Volume 8 (dodo Press) Ambrose Bierce Dodo Press, 2008
Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842-1914) was an American editorialist, journalist, short-story writer and satirist, today best known for his The Devil's Dictionary (1911). He wrote some of his books under the pseudonyms Dod Grile and J. Milton Sloluck. Bierce's lucid, unsentimental style has kept him popular when many of his contemporaries have been consigned to oblivion. His dark, sardonic views and vehemence as a critic earned him the nickname, "Bitter Bierce. " Such was his reputation that it was said his judgment on any piece of prose or poetry could make or break a writer's career. His short stories are considered among the best of the 19th century, providing a popular following based on his roots. The Best of Ambrose Bierce: The Damned Thing + An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge + The Devil's Dictionary + Chickamauga (4 Classics in 1 eBook) Ambrose Bierce e-artnow Editions, Cork, Ireland, 2013
This carefully crafted ebook: "The Best Of Ambrose Bierce: The Damned Thing + An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge + The Devil's Dictionary + Chickamauga (4 Classics in 1 Book)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. This ebook is a complete collection of 4 Classics stories. The Damned Thing is a story focuses on how the human race takes their views of nature for granted, and how there may be things in the natural world that the human eye cannot see or the human ear cannot hear. An Occurrence at Owl takes place during the war of the 1860's between the American states of the North and the states of the South. A group of soldiers is hanging a Southern farm owner for trying to stop Northern military movements across the Owl Creek Bridge. In the last moments of his life, the Southern prisoner dreams he has escaped; and everything that happens in the story is really only the work of the prisoner's brain just before he dies. One of Bierce's most famous works is his much-quoted book, The Devil's Dictionary, originally a newspaper serialization which was first published in book form in 1906 as The Cynic's Word Book. It offers an interesting reinterpretation of the English language in which cant and political double-talk are neatly lampooned.Chickamauga was first published in 1889. It's about an innocent child who stumbles into unspeakable horror during the battle.Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842—1914?) was an American satirist, critic, poet, editor and journalist. Bierce became a prolific author of short stories often humorous and sometimes bitter or macabre. He spoke out against oppression and supported civil and religious freedoms. He also wrote numerous Civil War stories from first-hand experience. Many of his works are ranked among other esteemed American authors' like Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen Crane, and Mark Twain.

Ambrose Bierce: The Devil's Dictionary, Tales and Memoirs: The Devil's Dictionary, Tales and Memoirs Bierce, Ambrose; Joshi, S.T. Library of America : Distributed to the trade in the United States by Penguin Group (USA), Library of America, 219, Second printing, New York, 2011
A veteran of some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, Ambrose Bierce went on to become one of the darkest and most death haunted of American writers, the blackest of black humorists. This volume gathers the most celebrated and significant of Bierce's writings. In the Midst of Life (Tales of Soldiers and Civilians) , his collection of short fiction about the Civil War, which includes the masterpieces "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and "Chickamauga," is suffused with a fiercely ironic sense of the horror and randomness of war. Can Such Things Be? brings together "The Death of Halpin Frayser," "The Damned Thing," "The Moonlit Road," and other tales of terror that make Bierce the genre's most significant American practitioner between Poe and Lovecraft. The Devil's Dictionary , the brilliant lexicon of subversively cynical definitions on which Bierce worked for decades, displays to the full his corrosive wit. In Bits of Autobiography , the series of memoirs that includes the memorable "What I Saw of Shiloh," he recreates his experiences in the war and its aftermath. The volume is rounded out with a selection of his best uncollected stories. Acclaimed Bierce scholar S. T. Joshi provides detailed notes and a newly researched chronology of Bierce's life and mysterious disappearance. LIBRARY OF AMERICA  is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

A certain Persian nobleman obtained from a cow gipsy a small oyster. Holding himup by the beard, he addressed him thus: "You must try to forgive me for what I am about to do; and you might as well setabout it at once, for you haven't much time. I should never think of swallowing youif it were not so easy; but opportunity is the strongest of all temptations. Besides, Iam an orphan, and very hungry.""Very well," replied the oyster; "it affords me genuine pleasure to comfort theparentless and the starving. I have already done my best for our friend here, ofwhom you purchased me; but although she has an amiable and accommodatingstomach, we couldn't agree. For this trifling incompatibility-would you believe it?-she was about to stew me! Saviour, benefactor, proceed.""I think," said the nobleman, rising and laying down the oyster, "I ought to knowsomething more definite about your antecedents before succouring you. If youcouldn't agree with your mistress, you are probably no better than you should be."People who begin doing something from a selfish motive frequently drop it whenthey learn that it is a real benevolence

İMKÂNSIZ ÖYKÜLER Bilinmeyen yazar Borgo Press, June 1, 2002
Ambrose Bierce never owned a horse, a carriage, or a car; he was a renter who never owned his own home. He was a man on the move, a man who traveled light: and in the end he rode, with all of his possessions, on a rented horse into the Mexican desert to join Pancho Villa -- never to return. Can Such Things Be? Once William Randolph Hearst -- Bierce's employer, who was bragging about his own endless collections of statuary, art, books, tapestries, and, of course real estate like Hearst Castle -- once William Randolph Hearst asked Bierce what he collected. Bierce responded, smugly: "I collect words. And ideas. Like you, I also store them. But in the reservoir of my mind. I can take them out and display them at a moment's notice. Eminently portable, Mr. Hearst. And I don't find it necessary to show them all at the same time." Such things can be. (jacketless library hardcover)
