The conservation of cultural heritage is a major commitment for all countries around the world, since it is a complex task and a matter of great responsibility. Amongst other sectors of society, science has a contribution to make to heritage preservation. This book is the result of the international conference Heritage, Weathering and Conservation (HWC2006), held in Madrid, Spain, in 2006. It brought together prominent scientists and professionals from a variety of disciplines who have been active in the field and have raised the profile of heritage preservation. This monograph discusses the possibility of different literary editions in the Masoretic Text and the Old Greek of 2 Samuel 10-12 by combining the methods of textual criticism and narrative analysis. The study includes an assessment of the textual development whenever signs of a different edition are detected. The text-critical study and the narrative analysis of 2 Sam 10-12 have been kept in distinct sections of the work for the convenience of the reader more interested in one aspect or the other. The narratives of the original Greek and the Masoretic Text can only be compared if the Old Greek in 2 Sam 10-12 is first attained. However, the OG of those chapters can be established only through the comparison between the Lucianic text and the so-called καίγε text. This comparison requires the study of the translational or recensional features of both textual traditions, a subject treated in detail in the monograph. In the sections devoted to textual criticism the testimony of 4QSama and the witnesses to the Vetus Latina have received much attention. The Targum, the Peshiṭta, Flavius Josephus and the Greek Chronicles have also been taken into account. This monograph discusses instances where MT’s version is older than OG’s account, but also cases when the OG is to be preferred. Not rarely, cases were encountered where it was not possible to decide whether it is the OG or MT that preserved the oldest reading. This work also shows that reading the books of Samuel as a polyglot text is a fruitful exercise for biblical research. The textual traditions discussed were treated both for their value for textual criticism and as texts worth reading on their own, with attention to their specific narrative outlook.

El presente trabajo pretende examinar el mantenimiento de jardines, en particular los palmerales en la provincia de Girsu durante la tercera dinastía de Ur, también conocida como el periodo Neo-sumerio, un periodo que se extendió por el último siglo del tercer milenio d.C. Como es bien conocido, la agricultura fue la piedra angular de la economía de la Baja Mesopotamia en el tercer milenio d.C., asumiendo formas variadas de acuerdo a los diferentes paisajes, y la cultura de los jardines fue tan solo una parte de ese marco más amplio.

El libro presenta el primer estudio sistemático sobre la utilización y la función de la plata en la economía de Mesopotamia del III milenio antes de Cristo. Con él se persigue definir hasta qué extremo y en qué sentido puede considerarse que la plata funcionaba como dinero durante el periodo de la tercera dinastía de Ur (c. 2112-2004 a.C.), demostrándose la importancia del papel monetario de la plata en la economía institucional de la ciudad de Umma. Como conclusión basada en el análisis estadístico de los textos, se demuestra que cuatro miembros de la familia del gobernador de la provincia recibían y gastaban la mayor parte de la plata registrada en los textos administrativos de los archivos de Umma.

Spatial gems are computational techniques for processing spatial data. This book, a follow-up to the first Spatial Gems volume, is a further collection of techniques contributed by leading research experts. Although these approaches were developed by their authors as part of larger research projects, the gems represent fundamental solutions that are generically applicable to many different problems. Our goal is to expose these useful techniques that are not yet in textbooks and often buried inside technical research papers to share them with software developers, graduate students, professors, and professional researchers.

This book provides a comprehensive study of the many ways to interact with computers and computerized devices. The opening chapter defines and motivates these interaction techniques and why they are important. Part I then provides a comprehensive but brief history of desktop and mobile interaction techniques and the important historical systems and interaction styles that hosted them. Part II looks in detail at the various kinds of interaction techniques, with each chapter focusing on a different one. The chapters explain the history and design variations and considerations, as well as the constraints that drive the designs: pointing devices, scrolling, percent-done progress indicators, menus, text entry, forms and dialog boxes, graphical editing, window managers, three-dimensional interactions, ubiquitous computing, gesture recognition, undo, help, assistive techniques for people with disabilities, and artificial intelligence techniques. Part III focuses on using, designing, and implementing interaction techniques, including more “meta” issues about interaction techniques in general. Much of this part is focused on programmers who will need to write code to use interaction techniques or to make new ones work. Interaction designers and graphic designers, even if they are not programmers, might need to know some of the material in this part to help evaluate existing interaction techniques or design and evaluate new ones. Finally, Part IV summarizes interviews with the original inventors or designers of some interaction techniques, based on guest lectures they gave to my class. As these are based on those lectures, I was only able to include people who agreed to talk and also agreed to have their lecture recorded (which unfortunately eliminated May-Li Khoe’s talk about the Apple Force Touch).

This introductory textbook teaches the simple development of geospatial applications based on the principles and software tools of geospatial data science. It introduces a new generation of geospatial technologies that have emerged from the development of the Semantic Web and the Linked Data paradigm, and shows how data scientists can use them to build environmental applications easily. Geospatial data science is the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and visualizing geospatial data. Since around 2010, there has been extensive work in the area of geospatial data science using semantic technologies and linked data, from researchers in the areas of the Semantic Web, Geospatial Databases and Geoinformatics. The main results of this research have been the publication of the OGC standard GeoSPARQL and the implementation of a number of linked data tools supporting this standard. Up to now, there has been no textbook that enables someone to teach this material to undergraduate or graduate students.

In Monastic Ecological Wisdom, Samuel Torvend shows how it is possible that medieval monastic values and practices could assist in the careful conservation of what we claim is God’s first gift, God’s first gesture of grace: the earth and all that dwells with it.
