Urban Dynamics in the Post-pandemic Period: Tourist Spaces and Urban Centres (The Urban Book Series) Enrique Navarro-Jurado (editor), Remedios Larrubia Vargas (editor), Fernando Almeida-García (editor), Juan José Natera Rivas (editor) Springer International Publishing AG, The Urban Book Series, 2023
This book offers a unique perspective on urban processes affecting tourist spaces and city centres. Economic, social and environmental uncertainty has been commonplace since March 2019, when mobility slowed down across the globe. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated trends that have been investigated in urban space for years. The incorporation of technologies, the expansion of tourism and the introduction of policies that in part want to advance sustainability are generating processes of reorganisation of territories that are driving changes. These changes will affect models of city, urbanism and society. This publication is directed to a wide spectrum of people interested in urban processes, tourism and social change in the context of the Post-Pandemic Covid-19. In particular, the book is aimed at researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students, consultants, public administrations and the public interested in the recent challenges that are affecting developed and developing societies.

nexusstc/Applications of Calorimetry in a Wide Context - Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Isothermal Titration Calorimetry and Microcalorimetry/8eef8f19d3338791d3ff215dff95e044.pdf
Applications of Calorimetry in a Wide Context - Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Isothermal Titration Calorimetry and Microcalorimetry Elkordy, Amal Ali (editor) INTECH Open Access Publisher, 2013 jan 23
Calorimetry, as a technique for thermal analysis, has a wide range of applications which are not only limited to studying the thermal characterisation (e.g. melting temperature, denaturation temperature and enthalpy change) of small and large drug molecules, but are also extended to characterisation of fuel, metals and oils. Differential Scanning Calorimetry is used to study the thermal behaviours of drug molecules and excipients by measuring the differential heat flow needed to maintain the temperature difference between the sample and reference cells equal to zero upon heating at a controlled programmed rate. Microcalorimetry is used to study the thermal transition and folding of biological macromolecules in dilute solutions. Microcalorimetry is applied in formulation and stabilisation of therapeutic proteins. This book presents research from all over the world on the applications of calorimetry on both solid and liquid states of materials.

And Other Neighborly Names : Social Process and Cultural Image in Texas Folklore Richard Bauman (editor); Roger D. Abrahams (editor) University of Texas Press, Austin, 2013
"And Other Neighborly Names" —the title is from a study by Americo Paredes of the names, complimentary and otherwise, exchanged across cultural boundaries by Anglos and Mexicans—is a collection of essays devoted to various aspects of folk tradition in Texas. The approach builds on the work of the folklorists who have helped give the study of folklore in Texas such high standing in the field-Mody Boatright, J. Frank Dobie, John Mason Brewer, the Lomaxes, and of course Paredes himself, to whom this book is dedicated. Focusing on the ways in which traditions arise and are maintained where diverse peoples come together, the editors and other essayists—John Holmes McDowell, Joe Graham, Alicia María González, Beverly J. Stoeltje, Archie Green, José E. Limón, Thomas A. Green, Rosan A. Jordan, Patrick B. Mullen, and Manuel H. Peña—examine conjunto music, the corrido, Gulf fishermen's stories, rodeo traditions, dog trading and dog-trading tales, Mexican bakers' lore, Austin's "cosmic cowboy" scene, and other fascinating aspects of folklore in Texas. Their emphasis is on the creative reaction to socially and culturally pluralistic situations, and in this they represent a distinctively Texan way of studying folklore, especially as illustrated in the performance-centered approach of Paredes, Boatright, and others who taught at the University of Texas at Austin. As an overview of this approach—its past, present, and future— "And Other Neighborly Names" makes a valuable contribution both to Texas folklore and to the discipline as a whole.

Facundo : civilization and barbarism : the first complete English translation Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Domingo F. Sarmiento, 12 Berkeley: University of California Press, University of California Press, Berkeley, 2003

A classic work of Latin American literature, Domingo Sarmiento's Facundo has become an integral part of the history, politics, and culture of Latin America since its first publication in 1845. Partially translated into English when it was first published, this foundational text appears here for the first time in its entirety.
An educator and writer, Sarmiento was President of Argentina from 1868 to 1874. His Facundo is a study of the Argentine character, a prescription for the modernization of Latin America, and a protest against the tyranny of the government of Juan Manuel de Rosas (1835-1852). The book brings nineteenth-century Latin American history to life even as it raises questions still being debated today—questions regarding the "civilized" city versus the "barbaric" countryside, the treatment of indigenous and African populations, and the classically liberal plan of modernization. Facundo's celebrated and frequently anthologized portraits of the caudillo Juan Facundo Quiroga and other colorful characters give readers an exhilarating sense of Argentine culture in the making.
Kathleen Ross's translation renders Sarmiento's passionate prose into English with all its richness intact, allowing the English-language reader the full experience of Facundo's intensity and historical reach.

New Tourism in the 21st Century : Culture, the City, Nature and Spirituality Rubén C. Lois-González; Xosé M. Santos-Solla; Pilar Taboada-de-Zuñiga Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 1, 2014
This book analyses the cultural elements of 21st-century tourism. The structure of the book is based on four main issues, which will help further the reader's understanding of present-day experiential tourism: namely urban and cultural tourism on a global scale; specific studies of new products linked to reappraising the landscape; heritage; and nature. It also examines the influence of branding and of the images projected in order to promote this new type of tourism, using both theoretical and general approaches. Finally, the Camino de Santiago is analysed as a paradigm of the new pilgrimage routes all over the world, with their implications and polysemic nature. Culture, nature, spirituality and urbanism are brought together in a series of studies of contemporary tourist activities. Tourism is, in short, an activity that marks the return of slow movement, of calm and relaxation, of the landscape and of self-rediscovery as a reappraised counterpoint to the frenetic pace of life in modern-day societies.

Workshop on Branching Processes and Their Applications (Lecture Notes in Statistics, 197) Miguel González (editor), Inés M. Puerto (editor), Rodrigo Martínez (editor), Manuel Molina (editor), Manuel Mota (editor), Alfonso Ramos (editor) Springer Berlin, Springer Nature, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2010
One of the charms of mathematics is the contrast between its generality and its applicability to concrete, even everyday, problems. Branching processes are typical in this. Their niche of mathematics is the abstract pattern of reproduction, sets of individuals changing size and composition through their members reproducing; in other words, what Plato might have called the pure idea behind demography, population biology, cell kinetics, molecular replication, or nuclear ?ssion, had he known these scienti?c ?elds. Even in the performance of algorithms for sorting and classi?cation there is an inkling of the same pattern. In special cases, general properties of the abstract ideal then interact with the physical or biological or whatever properties at hand. But the population, or bran- ing, pattern is strong; it tends to dominate, and here lies the reason for the extreme usefulness of branching processes in diverse applications. Branching is a clean and beautiful mathematical pattern, with an intellectually challenging intrinsic structure, and it pervades the phenomena it underlies. Erscheinungsdatum: 11.03.2010

Romanesque Patrons and Processes: Design and Instrumentality in the Art and Architecture of Romanesque Europe (British Archaeological Association Conference Transactions) Jordi Camps (editor), Manuel Castiñeiras (editor), John McNeill (editor), Richard Plant (editor) Routledge, Taylor et Francis Group, British Archaeological Association conference transactions, 1st edition, New York, 2018
The twenty-five papers in this volume arise from a conference jointly organised by the British Archaeological Association and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. They explore the making of art and architecture in Latin Europe and the Mediterranean between c . 1000 and c . 1250, with a particular focus on questions of patronage, design and instrumentality. No previous studies of patterns of artistic production during the Romanesque period rival the breadth of coverage encompassed by this volume – both in terms of geographical origin and media, and in terms of historical approach. Topics range from case studies on Santiago de Compostela, the Armenian Cathedral in Jerusalem and the Winchester Bible to reflections on textuality and donor literacy, the culture of abbatial patronage at Saint-Michel de Cuxa and the re-invention of slab relief sculpture around 1100. The volume also includes papers that attempt to recover the procedures that coloured interaction between artists and patrons – a serious theme in a collection that opens with ‘Function, condition and process in eleventh-century Anglo-Norman church architecture’ and ends with a consideration of ‘The death of the patron’.

Choudary Gorantla, Colin Boyd, Juan Manuel González Nieto, Mark Manulis (auth.), Donghoon Lee, Seokhie Hong (eds.) Springer Berlin Heidelberg : Imprint: Springer, 10.1007/97, 2010
ICISC 2009, the 12th International Conference on Information Security and Cryptology, was held in Seoul, Korea, during December 2–4, 2009. It was - ganized by the Korea Institute of Information Security and Cryptology (KIISC) and the Ministry of Public Administration and Security (MOPAS). The aim of this conference was to provide a forum for the presentation of new results in research, development, and applications in the ?eld of information security and cryptology. It also served as a place for research information exchange. The conference received 88 submissions from 22 countries, covering all areas of inf- mation security and cryptology. The review and selection processes were carried out in two stages by the Program Committee (PC) comprising 57 prominent - searchers via online meetings. First, at least three PC members blind-reviewed each paper, and papers co-authored by the PC members were reviewed by at least ?ve PC members. Second, individual review reports were revealed to PC members, and detailed interactive discussion on each paper followed. Through this process, thePC?nally selected 25papers from15countries. The acceptance rate was 28. 4%. The authors of selected papers had a few weeks to prepare for their ?nal versions based on the comments received from more than 80 ext- nal reviewers. The conference featured one tutorial and one invited talk. The tutorial was given by Amit Sahai from the University of California and the talk ´ was given by Michel Abdalla from Ecole normale sup´ erieure. Erscheinungsdatum: 12.07.2010

The Phoenicians in Spain : An Archaeological Review of the Eighth-Sixth Centuries B.C.E. -- A Collection of Articles Translated From Spanish Seymour (Sy) Gitin (editor); Marilyn R. Bierling (editor) Penn State University Press, Pennsylvania State University Press, Winona Lake, Ind, 2002
Since the 1960s, intensive research has demonstrated that Phoenician colonization on the Iberian Peninsula was far more widespread than formerly believed, with known Phoenician coastal settlements extending from the mouth of the Sado River, past Gilbratar, to the Segura River in the province of Alicante, Spain. This collection of articles translated from Spanish to English represents an attempt to bring this important aspect of Phoenician commercial activity in the West to the attention of student of ancient Near Eastern studies. The Iberian Peninsula has been home to many peoples and cultures over the centuries and has served as a door from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic and as a bridge between Europe and Africa. The numerous peoples who have settled the area reflect the peninsula's ancient history and strategic position. The Phoenicians preferred to establish their colonies on certain topographies...usually a low hill on an island or peninsula at the mouth of a river, which formed a harbor where ships could anchor and provided a route to the interior. The present volume is divided into two sections: the first section deals with the Phoenicians in the Mediterranean and the second with their presence in the Atlantic coastal areas of the Iberian Peninsula

Carlos Fuentes : A Critical View Robert Brody (editor); Charles Rossman (editor) University of Texas Press, Texas Pan American Series, 2014
Carlos Fuentes is a master of modern world literature. With the translation of his major works into English and other languages, his reputation has surpassed the boundaries of his native Mexico and of Hispanic literature and has become international. Now each new novel stimulates popular and scholarly reviews in periodicals from Mexico City and Buenos Aires to Paris and New York. Carlos Fuentes: A Critical View is the first full-scale examination in English of this major writer's work. The range and diversity of this critical view are remarkable and reflect similar characteristics in the creative work of Carlos Fuentes, a man of formidable intellectual energy and curiosity. The whole of Fuentes' work is encompassed by Luis Leal as he explores history and myth in the writer's narrative. Insightful new views of single works are provided by other well-known scholars, such as Roberto González Echevarría, writing on Fuentes' extraordinary Terra Nostra , and Margaret Sayers Peden, exploring Distant Relations , for which she served as authorized translator. Here too are fresh approaches to Fuentes' other novels, among them Where the Air Is Clear , Aura , and The Hydra Head , as well as an examination by John Brushwood of the writer's short fiction and a look by Merlin Forster at Fuentes the playwright. Lanin Gyurko reaches outside Fuentes' canon for his fascinating study of the influence of Orson Welles' Citizen Kane on The Death of Artemio Cruz . Manuel Durán and George Wing consider Fuentes in his role as critic of both literature and art. Carlos Fuentes: A Critical View has been prepared with the writer's many English-speaking readers in mind. Quotations are most frequently from standard, readily available English translations of Fuentes' works. A valuable chronology of the writer's life rounds off the volume.

Adaptive Urban Transformation: Urban Landscape Dynamics, Regional Design and Territorial Governance in the Pearl River Delta, China (The Urban Book Series) Steffen Nijhuis (editor), Yimin Sun (editor), Eckart Lange (editor) Springer International Publishing AG, 1st ed. 2023, 2023
This open access book provides a cross-sectoral, integrative and multi-scale design and planning approach for adaptive urban transformation of fast urbanising deltas, taking the Pearl River Delta (China) as a case study. Deltaic areas are among the most promising regions in the world. Their strategic location and superior quality of their soils are core factors supporting both human development and the rise of these regions as global economic hubs. At the same time, however, deltas are extremely vulnerable to multiple threats from both climate change and urbanisation. These include an increased flood risk combined with the resulting loss of ecological and social-cultural values. To ensure a more sustainable future for these areas, spatial strategies are needed to strengthen resilience, i.e. help the systems to cope with their vulnerabilities as well as enhance their capacity to overcome natural and artificial threats. The book provides a unique approach that integrates research in urban landscape systems, territorial governance and visualisation techniques that will help to achieve more integrated and resilient deltas. Based on an assessment of the dynamics of change regarding the transformational cycles of natural and urban landscape elements, eco-dynamic regional design strategies are explored to reveal greater opportunities for the exploitation of natural and social-cultural factors within the processes of urban development.

Mâexico 1900-1950 : Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Josâe Clemente Orozco and the Avant-Garde edited by Agustín Arteaga; with essays by Agustín Arteaga, Juan Manuel Bonet, Paulina Bravo Villarreal, Laura González Matute, Emmanuel Guigon, Sylvia Navarrete Bouzard, Antonio Saborit; with contributions by Claudia Barragán Arellano [and fourteen others]; and with a chronology by Sharon Jazzán Dayán JOHN WILEY & SONS LTD, UNKNOWN, 2017
Mxico 19001950 offers an unprecedented survey of Mexican art from the turn of the century through the Revolution (191020) and until the early 1950s. It examines key works across different mediums by major Mexican artists, including Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and Jos Clemente Orozco, as well as by lesser-known figures and women artists. The catalogue showcases Mexican modern art as its own distinct avant-garde, fundamentally different from that of Europe. Although many Mexican artists lived and practiced in Paris during the early decades of the 20th century, they eventually returned home and drew extensively from themes surrounding nationhood and Mexicos rich, mythical past, poignantly articulating their countrys revolutionary ideals, traditions, and aspirations. Over 250 illustrations foreground this wholly original and sweeping study of Mexico as a hotbed for modernism and artistic achievement. Distributed for the Dallas Museum of Art Exhibition Grand Palais, Paris (10/05/16 01/23/17) Dallas Museum of Art (03/12/17 07/16/17)
