The Joseph Smith Papers: Journals, Volume 3: May 1843-June 1844 Andrew H. Hedges (ed.), Alex D. Smith (ed.), Brent M. Rogers (ed.) The Church Historian’s Press, The Joseph Smith Papers: Journals, vol. 3, 2015
The year before Joseph Smith was murdered is one the most significant periods in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as in the life of the Church's founding prophet. This volume of The Joseph Smith Papers reproduces Joseph Smith's second journal from Nauvoo, Illinois, covering May 1843 through June 1844. During this time, Joseph Smith balanced his role as mayor of Nauvoo with that of Church leader, while simultaneously dealing with conflict from those both within and outside the Church. Accompanied by thorough annotation, the journal transcribed in this volume illuminates Joseph Smith's daily activities, including his and others' continued participation in temple ordinances, his presidential campaign, the creation of the Council of Fifty, and the opposition that eventually led to his violent death in Carthage, Illinois. This is the final volume of the Journals series of The Joseph Smith Papers.

The Joseph Smith Papers. Journals. Volume 2 : December 1841-April 1843 Andrew H. Hedges (ed.), Alex D. Smith (ed.), Richard Lloyd Anderson (ed.) The Church Historian’s Press, The Joseph Smith Papers: Journals, vol., 2, 1, 2011
The much-anticipated Journals, Volume 2, covers the Nauvoo period from December 1841 to April 30, 1843. Two major documents are featured in this volume:• The journal portion of the Book of the Law of the Lord, which served as a combination journal and temple record book. It includes journal entries on revelations received during this time period, letters written and received, and temple donations. • The first two of four small books titled “President Joseph Smith’s Journal,” kept by Willard Richards during the last years of the Prophet Joseph’s life (the final two books will be published in the forthcoming third and final volume of the Journals series). The journals provide background information about Joseph’s life and early Church history and form the foundation for the official history of the Church. Among the key events described in this volume are the creation of the Relief Society; the building of the Nauvoo Temple; and revelations on the nature of God, and baptism for the dead. Three letters from Emma are also included. These journals provide insights about the Prophet Joseph’s personality, including accounts of him functioning as mayor of Nauvoo, store operator, and general in the Nauvoo legion.

Between February 1833 and March 1834, the religious movement Joseph Smith founded continued to develop as members of the Church of Christ immigrated to Ohio and Missouri from areas across the United States and Upper Canada. The collection of eighty-eight documents found in this third volume of the Documents series of The Joseph Smith Papers sheds light on the formative events of this period, as well as the challenges Joseph Smith faced as he sought to gather church members and establish a city of Zion in Missouri. Included in the volume are minutes, revelations, letters, architectural and city plans, priesthood licenses, legal documents, and an effort to classify the scriptures by topic. Accompanied by extensive historical annotation, the documents in this volume have been transcribed to the highest standards of documentary editing. Together, they illustrate the challenges Joseph Smith faced in leading a church that stretched across the country, as well as his unfolding vision of expanding the church and establishing Zion. Covering topics ranging from heavenly visitations to violent opposition, these documents provide a deeper understanding of Joseph Smith's life and the religious movement he started.

Approaching antiquity : Joseph Smith and the ancient world edited by Lincoln H. Blumell, Matthew J. Grey, and Andrew H. Hedges Religious Studies Center, Brigham Young University ; Salt Lake City : Deseret Book Company, Salt Lake City, 2017
A collection of essays by prominent LDS scholars—including Richard Bushman and David Holland—__Approaching Antiquity__ discusses the interest in the ancient world shared by Joseph Smith and the early Latter-day Saints. Topics include Joseph Smith's fascination with the ancient Americas, his interaction with the Bible, his study of Hebrew and Greek, his reading of Jewish and Christian apocryphal writings, and his work with the Book of Abraham in the context of 19th-century Egyptology. Together, these essays demonstrate that Joseph Smith's interests in antiquity played an important role in his prophetic development as he sought to recover ancient scripture, restore the ancient Church, and bring the Latter-day Saints into fellowship with the sacred past.

Journal writings include doctrinal teachings and revelations as well as accounts of daily encounters and significant spiritual experiences, such as the First Vision and the Kirtland temple dedication.

Informative annotations, maps, textual photos, reference materials and other tools provide context and bring the text to life. Editors present the text just as it was written, preserving the language, grammar and often nonstandard spelling of Smith and his scribes and conveying an authentic sense of the times.

The fragile, 19th-century documents were previously seen only by a select few. Now, the curious of any faith or scholarly background can obtain a firsthand view of the religious leader directly from the transcripts of original manuscripts.

The project follows the highest scholarly standards of documentary editing and has been endorsed by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, a division of the National Archives.

David Azzolina - Library Journal

Whether or not you believe that Joseph Smith (1805-44), the founder and first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was who he said he was, there is no question that his presence looms large in American religious history. As such, any collection of documents relating to him becomes essential source material for understanding Mormonism, probably the most successful religion born on American soil. Though there have been some earlier, more limited compilations of Joseph Smith's papers, none has matched the scope of this proposed 30-volume project, of which this is the first volume. The project is sponsored by the Church Historians Office of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which, along with the Community of Christ, is the primary repository for the papers. The editors expect to issue two or three volumes a year, with the papers divided into six series, the journals being the first. This initial volume of the journals covers the tumultuous years of Smith's life and the growing pains of the early church in New York, Ohio, and Missouri. The highest documentary editing and production standards have been applied here, matching those of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and comparing favorably to large-scale presidential papers projects. The editors have relevant credentials: Jessee is past president of the Mormon History Association, Ronald K. Esplin served as an editor of Macmillan's Encyclopedia of Mormonism, and Richard Lyman Bushman is Gouverneur Morris Professor of History, emeritus, at Columbia University. Any academic library with collections in American religious history will want to start collecting thisset.

The Unlucky Man Hedges, H.T.G. 2015
'In about three minutes time I'll be dead. I've accepted the truth of the matter, somewhere between the shock and pain of the bullet making its explosive entry into my chest and the long, slow fall to the cold concrete, it became a fact in my mind that I've swallowed with fatalist equanimity. There's no use in fighting it.'It's rush hour on a cold Autumn morning when Jon Hesker takes the bullet that kills him; a punishment for seeing what he shouldn't have, for asking questions about a small pill whose innards shift and curl like black smoke. And then he wakes up, with a circle of smooth new skin over the entry wound in his chest and a hungry black space in his mind. Cut adrift from the old rhythms of the world, emancipated from fear, from doubt, Hesker’s a new man. But at what cost?Accompanied by his best friend and small-time criminal Alexander Corgen, Hesker's on the wrong side of the law, a fugitive on the run through a storm lashed city on the brink of collapse. Hunted by Control, the shadowy organisation whose secret he may have uncovered. Hunted by Wychelo, the strange-eyed killer who's already ended his life once. Hesker's search for answers will lead him over the river into the old city, a wild gangland rent by paranoia, enmeshed in a generations old civil war. Footsteps dogged by death and chaos, Hesker’s shadow looms tall ahead of him, spelling despair for everyone it touches. As the rain falls, reality seems to be shifting, changing and reshaping around the Unlucky Man.All the while, deep in the mountains, a shadow is waking up, ancient and terrible. A great, elemental force of fear and horror, grown ineffable and transient whilst it slept, it yearns to be whole, to be real, once again. It’s hungry, hungry enough to swallow the world. And its freedom is close at hand. Hesker might just be unlucky enough to be the tipping point between salvation and damnation.words : 58392Auszeichnung : isbn searched

Death of the Liberal Class Hedges, Chris Bold Type Books, Hachette Book Group, New York, 2010
For decades the liberal class was a defense against the worst excesses of power. But the pillars of the liberal class -- the press, universities, the labor movement, the Democratic Party, and liberal religious institutions -- have collapsed. In its absence, the poor, the working class, and even the middle class no longer have a champion. In this searing polemic Chris Hedges indicts liberal institutions, including his former employer, the New York Times, who have distorted their basic beliefs in order to support unfettered capitalism, the national security state, globalization, and staggering income inequalities. Hedges argues that the death of the liberal class created a profound vacuum at the heart of American political life. And now speculators, war profiteers, and demagogues -- from militias to the Tea Party -- are filling the void.

The World As It Is : Dispatches on the Myth of Human Progress Hedges, Chris Bold Type Books, New York, 2011
Drawing on two decades of experience as a war correspondent and based on his numerous columns for Truthdig, Chris Hedges presents The World As It Is , a panorama of the American empire at home and abroad, from the coarsening effect of America's War on Terror to the front lines in the Middle East and South Asia and the continuing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Underlying his reportage is a constant struggle with the nature of war and its impact on human civilization. "War is always about betrayal," Hedges notes. "It is about betrayal of the young by the old, of cynics by idealists, and of soldiers and Marines by politicians. Society's institutions, including our religious institutions, which mold us into compliant citizens, are unmasked."
