Seventeen-year-old Jessa Gray has always felt broken inside, but she's gotten very good at hiding it. No one at school knows about the panic attacks, the therapy that didn't help, the meds that haven't worked. But when a severe accident leaves her with a brain injury and visible scars, Jessa can no longer pretend that she's okay-- now she looks as shattered as she feels. Fleeing from her old life in Los Angeles, Jessa moves to Colorado to live with her dad, but her anxiety only gets worse in the wake of the accident. That is, until she meets Marshall, a boy with a heart defect whose kindness and generous spirit slowly draw Jessa out of her walled-off shell and into the broken, beautiful, real world--a place where souls get hurt just as badly as bodies, and we all need each other to heal. In Search of Legitimacy: How Outsiders Become Part of the Afro-Brazilian Capoeira Tradition (Dance and Performance Studies Book 7) Lauren Miller Griffith Berghahn Books, Incorporated, Dance and Performance Studies; 7, 1, 2016
Every year, countless young adults from affluent, Western nations travel to Brazil to train in capoeira, the dance/martial art form that is one of the most visible strands of the Afro-Brazilian cultural tradition. __In Search of Legitimacy__ explores why “first world” men and women leave behind their jobs, families, and friends to pursue a strenuous training regimen in a historically disparaged and marginalized practice. Using the concept of apprenticeship pilgrimage—studying with a local master at a historical point of origin—the author examines how non-Brazilian capoeiristas learn their art and claim legitimacy while navigating the complexities of wealth disparity, racial discrimination, and cultural appropriation.

A Cross-Cultural Psychological Assessment Manual; The Raphael Methodology; 1 Alan J. Raphael, R. Lauren Miller, Theresa Ascheman Jones, Charles J. Golden, Alan Raphael, Theresa Jones, Charles Golden Routledge, Chapman & Hall, Incorporated, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), [N.p.], 2023
This user-friendly manual provides a cross-cultural psychological assessment battery, including projective methods. Authors outline a new, empirically validated, reliable system, which seeks to update the scoreable and interpretable factors and entwine commonly respected “tried and true” graphomotor tests, thereby maximizing their efficacy in the assessment of significant psychological traits in children and adults. Because of its use as a gender fair, culture free, language free testing method, it will be a valuable asset in all areas of current psychological assessment. The CCPAB test takes approximately 20 to 40 minutes to administer, and does not require any administration materials that most practitioners would not have readily available. The CCPAB can be used by evaluators on its own or in conjunction with other psychological and neuropsychological test data, as well as by mental health treatment providers seeking a quick and accurate way to assess the psychological functioning of individuals aged six years and older. Multiple appendices contain information on scoring criteria, scoring keys, and a wealth of sample questions which will also be a useful resource for evaluators. This manual is appropriate for users ranging from graduate-level students in training and supervision to even the most skilled assessment psychologists for quick and valid assessment of a wide range of clients.

Algorithmic Foundations of Robotics XII: Proceedings of the Twelfth Workshop on the Algorithmic Foundations of Robotics (Springer Proceedings in Advanced Robotics, 13) Ken Goldberg (editor), Pieter Abbeel (editor), Kostas Bekris (editor), Lauren Miller (editor) Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer, Springer Proceedings in Advanced Robotics, Springer Proceedings in Advanced Robotics, 1, 2020
This book presents the outcomes of the 12th International Workshop on the Algorithmic Foundations of Robotics (WAFR 2016). WAFR is a prestigious, single-track, biennial international meeting devoted to recent advances in algorithmic problems in robotics. Robot algorithms are an important building block of robotic systems and are used to process inputs from users and sensors, perceive and build models of the environment, plan low-level motions and high-level tasks, control robotic actuators, and coordinate actions across multiple systems. However, developing and analyzing these algorithms raises complex challenges, both theoretical and practical. Advances in the algorithmic foundations of robotics have applications to manufacturing, medicine, distributed robotics, human–robot interaction, intelligent prosthetics, computer animation, computational biology, and many other areas.   The 2016 edition of WAFR went back to its roots and was held in San Francisco, California – the city where the very first WAFR was held in 1994. Organized by Pieter Abbeel, Kostas Bekris, Ken Goldberg, and Lauren Miller, WAFR 2016 featured keynote talks by John Canny on “A Guided Tour of Computer Vision, Robotics, Algebra, and HCI,” Erik Demaine on “Replicators, Transformers, and Robot Swarms: Science Fiction through Geometric Algorithms,” Dan Halperin on “From Piano Movers to Piano Printers: Computing and Using Minkowski Sums,” and by Lydia Kavraki on “20 Years of Sampling Robot Motion.” Furthermore, it included an Open Problems Session organized by Ron Alterovitz, Florian Pokorny, and Jur van den Berg. There were 58 paper presentations during the three-day event.   The organizers would like to thank the authors for their work and contributions, the reviewers for ensuring the high quality of the meeting, the WAFR Steering Committee led by Nancy Amato as well as WAFR’s fiscal sponsor, the International Federation of Robotics Research (IFRR), led by Oussama Khatib and Henrik Christensen. WAFR 2016 was an enjoyable and memorable event.

Graceful Resistance: How Capoeiristas Use Their Art for Activism and Community Engagement (Interp Culture New Millennium) Lauren Miller Griffith University of Illinois Press, 1, 2023
"Capoeira began as a martial art developed by enslaved Afro-Brazilians. Today, the practice incorporates song, dance, acrobatics, and theatrical improvisation-and leads many participants into activism. Lauren Miller Griffith's extensive participant observation with multiple capoeira groups informs her ethnography of capoeiristas--both individuals and groups--in the United States. Griffith follows practitioners beyond their physical training into social justice activities that illuminate capoeira's strong connection to resistance and subversion. As both individuals and communities of capoeiristas, participants march against racial discrimination, celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth, organize professional clothing drives for job seekers, and pursue economic and environmental justice in their neighborhoods. For these people, capoeira becomes a type of serious leisure that contributes to personal growth, a sense of belonging, and an overall sense of self, while also imposing duties and obligations. An innovative look at capoeira in America, Graceful Resistance; reveals how the practicing of an art can catalyze action and transform communities"-- Provided by publisher

In Search of Legitimacy: How Outsiders Become Part of the Afro-Brazilian Capoeira Tradition (Dance and Performance Studies Book 7) Lauren Miller Griffith Berghahn Books Ltd, Dance and Performance Studies; 7, 1, 2016

Witchcraft and belief in Early Modern Scotland || Goodare, Julian; Martin, Lauren; Miller, Joyce; Davies, Owen; Barry, Jonathan; Blécourt, Willem de Palgrave Macmillan Limited, 10.1057/97, 2007
This pioneering collection concentrates on witchcraft beliefs rather than witch-hunting. It ranges widely across areas of popular belief, culture and ritual practice, as well as dealing with intellectual life and incorporating regional and comparative elements. Witchcraft has almost always had an important place in people's belief systems, helping them to organise and understand their ideas about community and neighbourliness, good and evil, harm and healing, and indeed God and the Devil. These ideas took different shape and form over time and place. In early modern Europe these beliefs became matters of life or death. What were the beliefs behind the witchcraft prosecutions of early modern Scotland? What was their wider import in Scottish society and culture? The book is a collection of essays on Scottish witchcraft belief. It ranges widely across areas of popular belief, culture and ritual practice, as well as dealing with intellectual life and incorporating regional and comparative elements. The editors were members of the team responsible for the recently-completed Survey of Scottish Witchcraft, and the book incorporates a number of pioneering findings from this rich online resource

What if you never had to fail or make a wrong choice? What if you never had to fall? Fast-forward to a time when Apple and Google have been replaced by Gnosis, a monolith corporation that has developed the most life-changing technology to ever hit the market: Lux, an app that flawlessly optimizes decision making for the best personal results. Just like everyone else, sixteen-year-old Rory Vaughn knows the key to a happy, healthy life is following what Lux recommends. When shes accepted to the elite boarding school Theden Academy, her future happiness seems all the more assured. But once on campus, something feels wrong beneath the polished surface of her prestigious dream school. Then she meets North, a handsome townie who doesnt use Lux, and begins to fall for him and his outsider way of life. Soon, Rory is going against Luxs recommendations, listening instead to the inner voice that everyone has been taught to ignore a choice that leads her to uncover a truth neither she nor the world ever saw coming.

Practicalities from Culinology®: How Umami Can Contribute to Culinary Arts and Sciences Chris Koetke; Lauren Miller; Jonathan Deutsch Springer International Publishing AG, Food and Health, 2023
## Abstract This chapter focuses on umami from a practical gustatory and culinary standpoint. The overall objective of this chapter is to apply the science of umami to daily culinary preparation. It focuses on the umami experience and the traditional role that umami plays in foods loved around the globe. Informed by culinary science, the field at the intersection of culinary arts and food science, this chapter is about the intentional incorporation of umami to create balanced dishes. Umami may be introduced from foods intrinsically rich in umami, foods manipulated by further processing to further develop umami (e.g., fermentation), or the addition of MSG (monosodium glutamate), the purest form of umami available to everyday cooks. This chapter addresses benefits of umami in cooking, which include to aid in salt reduction, to provide a bass note for flavor, to increase salivation, and to aid in perception of meatiness. The benefits of umami make it an attractive option to improve both health and flavor.
