Teachers are agents of change and they are central to the health of communities and the reform of health professions education. However, individuals often assume these responsibilities are based on their professional competence, without preparation for the roles of the teacher and without the broad support of a community of practice. Systematic faculty development, along with active participation in networks and consortia, is central to addressing these challenges and this book provides a much needed resource to support such efforts. In Chapters 1 and 2, the authors offer an important and comprehensive framework for the competencies of teachers built around the roles they are expected to fill. This approach is consistent with the wider movement toward competency-based education, and it serves as a basis for comprehensive programs of faculty development and teacher assessment. In the remaining chapters the authors populate this framework with practical information that will support teachers on their journey to excellence. Historically, the primary role of the teacher has been to provide information to students. Chapters 3 and 4 address this traditional role while reflecting the fact that the focus of education has shifted away from teaching and towards learning. These chapters underscore the notion that the learner-centric teacher must be able to curate information, to act as a coach, to facilitate and identify learning opportunities, and to mentor students on the path to their learning goals.

This text is the fifth and final in the series of educational books written by Israel Gelfand with his colleagues for high school students. These books cover the basics of mathematics in a clear and simple format – the style Gelfand was known for internationally. Gelfand prepared these materials so as to be suitable for independent studies, thus allowing students to learn and practice the material at their own pace without a class. Geometry takes a different approach to presenting basic geometry for high-school students and others new to the subject. Rather than following the traditional axiomatic method that emphasizes formulae and logical deduction, it focuses on geometric constructions. Illustrations and problems are abundant throughout, and readers are encouraged to draw figures and “move” them in the plane, allowing them to develop and enhance their geometrical vision, imagination, and creativity. Chapters are structured so that only certain operations and the instruments to perform these operations are available for drawing objects and figures on the plane. This structure corresponds to presenting, sequentially, projective, affine, symplectic, and Euclidean geometries, all the while ensuring students have the necessary tools to follow along. Geometry is suitable for a large audience, which includes not only high school geometry students, but also teachers and anyone else interested in improving their geometrical vision and intuition, skills useful in many professions. The miracle of integral geometry is that it is often possible to recover a function on a manifold just from the knowledge of its integrals over certain submanifolds. The founding example is the Radon transform, introduced at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, many other transforms were found, and the general theory was developed. Moreover, many important practical applications were discovered. The best known, but by no means the only one, being to medical tomography. This book is a general introduction to integral geometry, the first from this point of view for almost four decades. The authors, all leading experts in the field, represent one of the most influential schools in integral geometry. The book presents in detail basic examples of integral geometry problems, such as the Radon transform on the plane and in space, the John transform, the Minkowski-Funk transform, integral geometry on the hyperbolic plane and in the hyperbolic space, the horospherical transform and its relation to representations of $SL(2,\mathbb C)$, integral geometry on quadrics, etc. The study of these examples allows the authors to explain important general topics of integral geometry, such as the Cavalieri conditions, local and nonlocal inversion formulas, and overdetermined problems in integral geometry. Many of the results in the book were obtained by the authors in the course of their career-long work in integral geometry.
