Principia Ethica George Edward Moore ePubLibre, 1954

Moore's paradox : a critique of representationalism / Ulla Schmid. Moore, George Edward;Schmid, Ulla De Gruyter, Inc., Quellen und Studien zur Philosophie, v. 124, Berlin/Boston, 2014
The word belief is widely assumed to designate a special class of mental states, the attitude of representing something as being the case. This book provides a critique of representationalism by focusing on the role that psychological concepts play in language, the way in which they are used in practice. Offering an alternative conception of their meaning, it finds a new way to deal with Moore's Paradox.

G. E. Moore: Selected Writings (International Library of Philosophy) G.E. Moore; edited by Thomas Baldwin London ; New York: Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 1993
G.E. Moore, more than either Bertrand Russell or Ludwig Wittgenstein, was chiefly responsible for the rise of the analytic method in twentieth-century philosophy. This selection of his writings shows Moore at his very best. The classic essays are crucial to major philosophical debates that still resonate today. Amongst those included are:• A Defense of Common Sense• Certainty• Sense-Data• External and Internal Relations• Hume's Theory Explained• Is Existence a Predicate?• Proof of an External WorldIn addition, this collection also contains the key early papers in which Moore signals his break with idealism, and three important previously unpublished papers from his later work which illustrate his relationship with Wittgenstein.

The moral philosophy of G.E. Moore R. W Jr. Ray; Sleeper Robert; Perkins Sylvester Temple University Press, 1, 2009-08-11
This study of G. E. Moore's work in moral philosophy draws upon a close examination of the early essays that preceded the writing of Principia Ethica in order to ground the author's view that Moore's famous "naturalistic fallacy argument" of Principia has been widely misunderstood. At the time of his death in 1986, Robert Peter Sylvester was in the process of preparing this book for publication. That process has been brought to completion by Ray Perkins, Jr., and R. W. Sleeper. Sylvester's reappraisal of the moral philosophy of G. E. Moore argues that criticism of the work of this major twentieth-century British philosopher has been based on misinterpretation of his unified position. He treats Moore's ideas about "What is Good?", "What things are Good?" and "What ought we to do?" as forming a coherent system. To bring this work up to date since the author's death, the editors have provided a bibliographic essay following each chapter in which recent scholarship is discussed.

Philosophical Papers (Muirhead Library of Philosophy) Moore George Edward Routledge, Muirhead Library of Philosophy XVII, 1, 2013
All the papers contained in this volume, except the two on 'Certainty' and 'Four Forms of Scepticism', have been previously published; and of those which have been previously published all are reprinted, with only a small number of corrections, in the order in which they were written. I know that some of these papers contain mistakes; but they seem to me, even as they stand, to say some things which are worth saying, and I hope that readers may find it convenient to have them collected in one volume. The paper on 'Certainty' was given as the Howison lecture at the University of California in 1941. And I wish now to express my gratitude to the University at being appointed Howison Lecturer, and my regret that the publication of the paper has been so long delayed. There are bad mistakes in it which I cannot yet see how to put right. 'Four Forms of Scepticism', which has been only partly revised, was delivered as a lecture to various universities during my sojourn in the United States of America during 1940-44, a sojourn which lowe primarily to my good friends Alice and Morris Lazerowitz whose interest and encouragemenat are largely responsible for the publication of this volume now. My thanks are also due to the Committee of the Aristotelian Society for permission to reprint the large number of papers contained in the various supplementary volumes of their Proceedings; to the Editor of 'The Library of Living Philosophers' for permission to reprint 'Russell's "Theory of Descriptions" from The Philosophy of Bertrand Russell; to the Editor of Mind for permission to reprint the articles on Wittgenstein; to the Council of the British Academy for permission to reprint 'Proof of an External World' from Volume XXV of their Proceedingsa; and to Casimir Lewy and my wife and my son Timothy for the immense amount of trouble they have taken in preparing this book for the press while I was in hospital.

Some Main Problems of Philosophy (Muirhead Library of Philosophy) Moore, George Edward,. Routledge, Muirhead Library of Philosophy, reprint, 2004
Moore manages to present central, limiting, typical philosophical problems in such a way that the reader in spite of himself begins to feel them. And without this feeling of the difficulty there can be no full understanding of what it is to remove it. The idea that there is nothing much to make a fuss about is as fatal as the idea that nothing much can be done about it. For this reason alone Moore's introduction to philosophical difficulties can help us to judge and to understand the most modern attempts to resolve them. But further the ruthless clarity with which Moore shows us the pathless jungle before us helps us to realize what must be done to get through. There is no path. We must cut a way from tree to tree. It often happens of course that one cannot tell where one wishes to go until one starts. But there are times when it is timely to ask 'Now where am I trying to go?' Moore has always reminded us of this. One thing he has always sought to keep before us is the difference between questions as to what is actually the case and questions as to what it is logically possible should be the case, the meanings of our words being what they are. In him too we find a habit of thought which, carried further by Wittgenstein, led to enormous advances -the study of the meaning of general terms by consideration of concrete cases.

Principia Ethica G.E. {Intro by Scott Davis} Moore New York: Barnes & Noble Books, Lexington, KY, 2012

when principia Ethica Appeared, In 1903, It Became Something Of A Sacred Text For The Cambridge-educated Elite Who Formed The Core Of The Bloomsbury Group. In A Letter Of October 11, 1903, Strachey Confesses To Moore That He Is Carried Away By principia, Which Inaugurates, For Him, The Beginning Of The Age Of Reason. Moore's Critique Of Convention, His Caustic Dismissal Of His Philosophical Predecessors, And The Relentless Rigor Of His Method Promised A Revolution In Morality Commensurate With The Modernist Transformation Of Art And Literature. principia Ethica Shifted The Study Of Ethics Away From Normative Questions To Issues Of Metaethics, The Study Of Ethical Concepts.

G E Moore: The Elements Of Ethics G.E. Moore; edited and with an introduction by Tom Regan Temple University Press ; [Eurospan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1991
George Edward Moore Is Among This Century's Most Influential Philosophers. Perhaps Best Known For His Defense Of Common Sense, He Also Made Important Contributions To Metaphysics And Theory Of Knowledge. But It Is In Ethics, And Especially Owing To The Positions He Develops In His Principia Ethica, First Published In 1903, That His Ideas Have Had Their Most Enduring Influence.a Forerunner To This Famous Work, The Elements Of Ethics Is A Series Of Ten Unpublished Lectures That Were Presented By Moore, Then In His Mid-twenties. The Elements Shows That Principia Ethica Did Not Spring Fully-formed From Moore's Pen But Evolved Slowly Over Time. In These Lectures, Moore Begins With The Same Question He Asks In Principia Ethica: What Is Good? Importantly, His Answer Is The Same One He Offers In Principia And Many Of Its Supporting Arguments Also Appear, Though Sometimes In Embryonic Form. Moreover, In These Lectures We Also Find Sustained Critiques Of Those Who Commit The Naturalistic Fallacy, And Of John Stuart Mill's Commission Of It In Particular.in The Elements, However, Moore's Position Regarding Ethics In Relation To Conduct Differs In Important Respects From The One Presented In Principia, And The Former Work Contains Important Discussions, Ranging From Christian Ethics And The Possibility Of Free Will, Not Found In The Latter. Author Note: Tom Regan Is Professor Emeritus Of Philosophy At North Carolina State University. Among His Many Books Are Bloomsbury's Prophet: G. E. Moore And The Development Of His Moral Philosophy (temple) And, Most Recently, The Animal Rights Debate (with Carl Cohen).

Though not blind to Abraham Lincoln's imperfections, Black Americans long ago laid a heartfelt claim to his legacy. At the same time, they have consciously reshaped the sixteenth president's image for their own social and political ends. Frederick Hord and Matthew D. Norman's anthology explores the complex nature of views on Lincoln through the writings and thought of Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Mary McLeod Bethune, Thurgood Marshall, Malcolm X, Gwendolyn Brooks, Barbara Jeanne Fields, Barack Obama, and dozens of others. The selections move from speeches to letters to book excerpts, mapping the changing contours of the bond—emotional and intellectual—between Lincoln and Black Americans over the span of one hundred and fifty years. A comprehensive and valuable reader, Knowing Him by Heart examines Lincoln's still-evolving place in Black American thought. |Introduction Frederick Douglass, Emancipation Day Address at Poughkeepsie, New York, August 2, 1858 Frederick Douglass, "The Chicago Nominations," June, 1860 H.
