lgli/Naomi Andre [Andre, Naomi] - Black Opera: History, Power, Engagement (2018, University of Illinois Press).epub
Black Opera : History, Power, Engagement Naomi Andre [Andre, Naomi] University of Illinois Press, University of Illinois Press, Urbana, 2018
From classic films like Carmen Jones to contemporary works like The Diary of Sally Hemings and U-Carmen eKhayelitsa, American and South African artists and composers have used opera to reclaim black people's place in history. Naomi André draws on the experiences of performers and audiences to explore this music's resonance with today's listeners. Interacting with creators and performers, as well as with the works themselves, André reveals how black opera unearths suppressed truths. These truths provoke complex, if uncomfortable, reconsideration of racial, gender, sexual, and other oppressive ideologies. Opera, in turn, operates as a cultural and political force that employs an immense, transformative power to represent or even liberate. Viewing opera as a fertile site for critical inquiry, political activism, and social change, Black Opera lays the foundation for innovative new approaches to applied scholarship.

lgli/The Music of Mzilikazi Khumalo Language, Culture, and Song in South Africa [3953368].pdf
The Music of Mzilikazi Khumalo: Language, Culture, and Song in South Africa Thomas Pooley, Naomi André, Innocentia Mhlambi, Donato Somma Bloomsbury Academic; Bloomsbury, 2024
Mzilikazi Khumalo (1932-2021), an iconic figure in choral music in South Africa, rose to prominence as one of Africa's leading composers of art music. This is a work of music history. Biographical essays on Khumalo's major works, including those for choir, orchestra, and opera are complemented by contextual studies of his compositions and arrangements as well as reflections on his roles as editor, conductor, and music director. Specifically in the context of South Africa's cultural and political transition from Apartheid to democracy, Khumalo's key role in establishing the Nation Building Massed Choir Festival, a multi-racial institution that forged an inclusive space for music, in the 1980s is discussed as evidence of his importance and relevance in South African culture. Khumalo's major works are studied in relation to contemporary art music, choral composition, and traditional song. These are UShaka KaSenzangakhona (1996), an African epic, and Princess Magogo KaDinuzulu (2002), one of the first indigenous African operas. Khumalo's artistic collaborators provide insight into their experiences working on these major projects, documenting the relationships the composer cultivated with his peers. This volume addresses a lacuna in the literature on South African art music which until recently tended to focus on works in the classical tradition and shows that Khumalo is a composer without peer in his synthesis of classical and choral, traditional and contemporary.

André Gide : pederasty and pedagogy Segal, Naomi Clarendon Press, Oxford, New York, England, 1998
"This book makes a powerful and sometimes contentious contribution to current debates in gender, feminism, and queer theory. Tracing the hydraulic image in a range of theoretical texts on pedagogy, pederasty, reproductive fantasy, and the anthropology of body fluids, Naomi Segal goes on to examine this imagery in the writings of Andre Gide." "Gide's sexuality was explicitly central to everything he wrote, but it was complex and diverse, motivated as much by undesire as by curiosity and the chase. The ventriloquism of the female voice, versions of triangularity, the potentially endless male chain, the desire of sun on skin, a sideways genealogy, and the gratuity of crime, education, virtue, or play - these mobile patterns are found throughout his fiction and non-fiction. In Gide's polemic, it is always better to be loved by an uncle than an aunt; but all love is motivated by the fluidity of the swerve."--Jacket.

Gauthier; Jennifer McFarlane-Harris; Sarah Schmalenberger; Ann Sears; Clarence Cameron White; Gayle Murchison; Jonathan O. Wipplinger Ill. : University of Illinois Press, 1st, First Edition, FR, 2012
Blackness in Opera critically examines the intersections of race and music in the multifaceted genre of opera. A diverse cross-section of scholars places well-known operas ( Porgy and Bess, Aida, Treemonisha ) alongside lesser-known works such as Frederick Delius's Koanga, William Grant Still's Blue Steel, and Clarence Cameron White's Ouanga! to reveal a new historical context for re-imagining race and blackness in opera. The volume brings a wide-ranging, theoretically informed, interdisciplinary approach to questions about how blackness has been represented in these operas, issues surrounding characterization of blacks, interpretation of racialized roles by blacks and whites, controversies over race in the theatre and the use of blackface, and extensions of blackness along the spectrum from grand opera to musical theatre and film. In addition to essays by scholars, the book also features reflections by renowned American tenor George Shirley. Contributors are Naomi André, Melinda Boyd, Gwynne Kuhner Brown, Karen M. Black opera : history, power, engagement André, Naomi Adele University of Illinois Press, 1, 2018
This is a book about thinking, interpreting, and writing about music in performance that incorporates how race, gender, sexuality, and nation help shape the analysis of opera today. Case-study operas are chosen within the diaspora of the United States and South Africa. Both countries had segregation policies that kept black performers and musicians out of opera. During the civil rights movement and after apartheid, black performers in both countries not only excelled in opera, they also began writing their own stories into the genre. Featured operas in this study span the Atlantic and bring together works performed in the West (the United States and Europe) and South Africa. Focal works are: __From the Diary of Sally Hemings__ (William Bolcom and Sandra Seaton), __Porgy and Bess__, and __Winnie: The Opera__ (Bongani Ndodana-Breen). A chapter is devoted to the nineteenth-century Carmens (novella by Mérimée and opera by Bizet) and black settings in the United States (__Carmen Jones__, __Carmen: A Hip Hopera__) and South Africa (__U-Carmen eKhayelitsha__). Woven within the discussions of specific works are three rubrics for how the text and music create the drama: Who is in the story? Who speaks? and Who is in the audience doing the interpreting? These questions, combined with a historical context that includes how a work also resonates in the present day, form the basis for an engaged musicological practice.

"The Chronicle of King Galawdewos (r. 1540-1559), reporting the nineteen years of the king's reign, is one of the most useful and significant historical sources for the history of Christian-Muslim relation in the sixteenth century of Ethiopia and the Horn. It represents a peculiar text in Ge'ez historiography both because of its narrative structure and the underlying sources used by the chronicler. Numerous Arabisms appear in the text, which eventually suggest that the Chronicle was written by a person with an outstanding knowledge of Arabic, in 1561. The book presents a new critical edition based on all available manuscripts and provides some detailed introductory notes and an English translation. The new edition yields philological findings concerning the Chronicle of King Galawdewos in particular and new inputs that call for re-editing the Ethiopian royal chronicles in general. It also adds valuable by now not recorded items for Ge'ez lexicography and corrects historical distortions resulted from the previous edition. Above all, the work provides a text-critically established edition of the Chronicle of King Galawdewos accompanied by an up-to-date concisely annotated translation, which offer new insights into the late medieval history and historiography of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa."--Provided by the publisher.

The Cambridge Companion To Gershwin (cambridge Companions To Music) Anna Harwell Celenza (Editor) Cambridge University Press (Virtual Publishing), Cambridge Companions to Music, 1, 2019
George Gershwin is often described as a quintessentially American composer. This Cambridge Companion explains why, engaging with the ways in which his music was shaped by American political, intellectual, cultural and business interests. As a composer and performer, Gershwin embraced technological advances and broke new ground in music business practices. In the decades preceding World War II, he captured the mechanistic pulse of modern life with his concert works and lay the groundwork for the Great American Songbook with his Broadway shows and film music. With his brother Ira, and his cousins Henry and B. A. Botkin, Gershwin explored various ethnic and cultural identities and contemplated their roles in US culture. His music confronted race during the Jim Crow era and continues to engage with issues of race today. This interdisciplinary exploration of Gershwin's life and music describes his avowed pursuit of an 'American' musical identity and its ongoing legacy.

Geschichte der Welt 600-1350 Geteilte Welten Akira Iriye; Jürgen Osterhammel; Daniel G. König; Anna Leube; Wolf Heinrich Leube; Andreas Wirthensohn; Martin Richter; Werner Roller; Daniel G. König; Christopher S. Beekman; Michael D. Mathiowetz; Michael Borgolte; François-Xavier Fauvelle; André Wink; Naomi Standen; Justin Jennings Verlag C.H. Beck oHG, 2023

Le Désir à l'oeuvre : André Gide à Cambridge 1918, 1998 Naomi Segal Brill Academic Publishers : Brill, Brill Academic Publishers, [Place of publication not identified], 2021
