[bookmarks added]Simplicity is often cited as a compelling factor in deciding which of several competing theories it is most reasonable to believe. Yet, the nature of simplicity has remained mysterious, in spite of the efforts of philosophers to explain what it is about theories, hypotheses, and explanations, that makes ’ them simple. Equally opaque is the justification for using simplicity as a criterion for belief.Professor Sober in this book attempts to solve these problems by first defining a concept of informativeness. He then argues that simplicity is informativeness, and shows that this theory illuminates our intuitive judgements about the simplicity of a variety of hypotheses. He examines very general inferential policies that seem to embody our taste for simplicity and devotes special attention to some issues in contemporary linguistics and psychology of perception. In the course of elaborating the theory, he discusses the idea of natural properties and natural kinds and tries to show their connection with simplicity. Other topics that he examines in the book include aesthetic simplicity, the simplicity of formal systems, and the’ nature ot justification.Elliott Sober graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1969, and worked for four years as a research student at the University of Cambridge and Harvard University He is now Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin.

Alan Bailey offers a clear and vigorous exposition and defence of the philosophy of Sextus Empiricus, one of the most influential of ancient thinkers, the father of philosophical scepticism. The subsequent sceptical tradition in philosophy has not done justice to his views stand up today as remarkably insightful, offering a fruitful way to approach issues of knowledge, understanding, belief, and rationality. It is widely supposed that any form of scepticism that arrives at a global denial of the availability of rationally justified beliefs is self-refuting and unliveable. Bailey shows that the former objection can be disarmed by distinguishing between the mature Pyrrhonean sceptic's assessment of his negative epistemological arguments and the assessment forced upon his philosophical opponents by their own rationalistic code. This work sheds light on the complexity of medieval German literary culture as it evolved in the course of the 13th century (c.1220-1290) by analyzing the attitudes of narrative poets towards the issue of authorship. It describes the various ways in which vernacular writers could address the theme of their own authorship within their literary works, and explores the tensions that arose between such authorial strategies on the one hand and their subsequent manuscript transmission on the other. The first part of the book deals with the presentation of authorship in the works of two poets who stand at the heart of literary tradition (Rudolf von Ems; Konrad von Wurzburg), and involves discussion of such topics as authorial signature, acrostics, author portraits, and patronage; the second part deals with two genres (heroic epic; short story) that evince a rather more problematic relationship with the figure of the author.
