nexusstc/The Principles of Electrochemistry/7fe7b62a3bc9906e94a4c23eac5147f4.djvu
The Principles of Electrochemistry Duncan A . MacInnes Reinhold Publishing Corporation, 1939
"This book has been written with the idea of furnishing an account of theoretical electrochemistry as it is today, and to satisfy an inner urge of the author to see the subject he is interested in as B logical, connected whole." In these words. Dr. MacInnes gives the key to the plan of his book and the motive that guarantees good work. Considering that fifteen years were spent in preparation and that the author has had extensive practical experience with many of the subjects discussed, it is not surprising that the finished product is one of the most satisfying treatments of the field in many years. The style is rigorous, clear, and concise. The attention given to the different subjects is such as to produce an unusually well-balanced book. True to his purpose, the author has refrained from discussing most of the speculative in electrochemistry and has confined himself to real accomplishment. So well has he hacked theory with experimental data, that one has the feeling whatever is found therein is dependable and authoritative. Such strict hewing to the line has even forbidden inclusion of the modern theory of acids and bases. The omission will be regretted by some, but twenty-four well-packed chapters covering practically the whole of the electrochemistry of solutions should offset any regrets. Some subjects not commonly discussed are "The Effects of Gravity and Centrifugal Force on the Electromotive Force of Galvanic Cells"; "The Determination of Thermodynamic Ionization Constants from the Potentials of Cells without Liquid Junctions"; "Thermodynamic Studies of Non-Aqueous Solutions"; and "Electrokinetic Phenomena: Electro-osmosis, Electrophoresis, and Streaming Potential." To name chapters of outstanding excellence is difficult, but transference. Debye-Hueckel theory, liquid junctions, the meaning of pH, interionic attraction and conductance, and the effect of structure and substitution on ionization constants are discussed unusually well. A hit on indicators and solubility products might well have been included to make a more complete work, the former because of its bearing on pH values and the latter because of its use in determining activity coefficients and standard potentials. An unusual feature is the extensive amount of data incorporated-there are ninety-eight tables and especially the critical evaluation of much of it, e.g., activities and standard potentials. In some cases the values have even been recalculated. This same precision extends to the text. Symbols are clearly defined and the real meaning of equations set forth. All equations are derived "from the ground up" with exception of the Poisson equation, the Gronwall-LaMer-Sandved extension and the Onsager conductance equation. Even Planck's equation for liquid junctions is derived in the appendix. The literature references are exceedingly abundant, and there are many explanatory footnotes. A list of symbols in the front of the book is very helpful. It is unfortunate that multiplicity of quantities has caused a shortage of suitable symbols. The use of small capitals and large capitals is especially bad as it necessitates closest observation in reading. An obvious error in this list is the definition of γ. This should be "Activity coefficient on molal, m, basis" instead of "molar." Most to be criticized, in the reviewer's opinion, is the almost complete omission of any conventions interrelating the signs of cell and half-cell potentials and the chemical reactions producing such potentials. On page 110 there is one convention governing signs, but nothing approaching in completeness such rules as are found in, say, the Getman-Daniels "Physical Chemistry" and MacDougall "Physical Chemistry." To the expert such conventions are, perhaps, unnecessary, but they are extremely valuable to the novice and timesavers to all. Regrettable also is the use of plus for the base metal potentials and minus for the noble metal potentials, F for the Helmholtz free energy and Z for the Gibbs free energy. There seems to be no real advantage in departing from the conventions and symbols most widely used in this country. Fomat, typing, and indexing leave nothing to be desired. This outstanding work is recommended unreservedly to electrochemists, advanced students, and teachers. The lack of problems somewhat diminishes its value as a text. Finally, many thanks to prof. Luigi Pavilpsano for having scanned and published this book to LibGen.

Freehand Drawing and Sketching Karl Christian Heuser Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1984
Freehand drawing is an absorbing and gratifying pursuit that produces a visible, permanent result. In order to create effective freehand drawings, by themselves or as elements in larger architectural or technical drawings, you do not need to have innate talent. Instead, what you need is a solid grounding in basic drawing forms, and plenty of practice. This book is a training and work manual designed to meet both of these needs. It offers you a perfect introduction to this stimulating activity, beginning with an emphasis on the correct handling of drawing materials and the use of common powers of observation. Whether your interest in freehand drawing is professional or strictly for pleasure, you will find this book a reliable and eminently helpful training guide.

Reinhold Niebuhr Reinhold Niebuhr Library of America, 2015
A definitive collection of the theologian and public intellectual who was the conscience of the American Century. "One of my favorite philosophers," remarked Barack Obama about the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr (1892--1971) in 2007. President Obama is but one of the many American political leaders--including Jimmy Carter and Martin Luther King Jr.--to be influenced by Niebuhr's writings. Throughout the Depression, World War II, and the Cold War, Niebuhr was one of the most prominent public voices of his time, probing with singular style the question of how to act morally in a fallen world. This Library of America volume, prepared by Niebuhr's daughter, Elisabeth Sifton, collects four indispensable books: Leaves from the Notebook of a Tamed Cynic (1929), Moral Man and Immoral Society (1932), The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness (1944), and The Irony of American History (1952), along with a selection of essays, sermons, lectures,...

Reinhold Messner - My Life at the Limit: Reinhold Messner Interviewed by Thomas Huetlin Hüetlin, Thomas;Messner, Reinhold The Mountaineers Books, Legends and lore series, Seattle, WA, 2014
__Reinhold Messner: My Life at the Limit__, the newest book by the famed mountaineer, is a conversation between Messner and interviewer Thomas Hüetlin, an award-winning German journalist. It reveals a more thoughtful and conversational Messner than one finds in his previous books, with the 'talk' between Messner and Hüetlin covering not only the highlights of Messner's climbing career, but also his treks across Tibet, the Gobi, and Antarctica; his five-year-stint as a member of the European Parliament; his encounter with and study of the yeti; his thoughts on traditional male/female roles; and much more. Readers learn about Messner's childhood, his thoughts about eating ice cream with girls (against), politics (mostly liberal), and his technique for killing chickens (sharp scissors). Messner is known as one of history's greatest Himalayan mountaineers, a man who pushed back the frontiers of the possible for a whole generation of climbers. While the interest in __My Life at the Limit__ is that it exposes much more of the man than his climbing career, that career is still utterly remarkable--and Mountaineers Books is proud to present this book, which is core to our mission, to audiences across North America.

"Solitary Mathilda has long been enamored with the ‘Bright Young Things’ of the 20s, and throughout her life, her attempts at reinvention have mirrored their extravagance and artfulness. After discovering a photograph of the forgotten Black modernist poet Hermia Druitt, who ran in the same circles as the Bright Young Things that she adores, Mathilda becomes transfixed and resolves to learn as much as she can about the mysterious figure. Her search brings her to a peculiar artists’ residency in Dun, a small European town Hermia was known to have lived in during the 30s. The artists’ residency throws her deeper into a lattice of secrets and secret societies that takes hold of her aesthetic imagination, but will she be able to break the thrall of her Transfixions? From champagne theft and Black Modernisms, to art sabotage, alchemy and lotus-eating proto-luxury communist cults, Mathilda’s journey through modes of aesthetic expression guides her to truth and the convoluted ways it is made and obscured." --publisher's web site, viewed 2/1/21

The Naked Mountain Reinhold Messner
Reinhold Messner is famous for many firsts: First to climb all fourteen 8000-meter peaks; first to summit Everest (with Peter Habeler) without supplementary oxygen, first to solo Everest. None of these, however, equals the drama of his first summit: 8000-meter peak Nanga Parbat. Thirty-two years later, Messner is still haunted by the events of June, 1970. While others on the expedition retreated, Reinhold Messner went for the summit, leaving his brother, Gunther, behind with the team photographer. Some hours later he found that Gunther had followed him. The two reached the summit but Gunther developed altitude sickness; he was incapable of descending the technically-challenging route they had taken in reaching the summit. They became separated during the descent via the Diamir Flank, and when Reinhold returned to where he had left Gunther, his brother was gone. Back at basecamp, ugly accusations were exchanged between members of the expedition and a court battle followed in Germany. In this new book Reinhold Messner revisits this most painful period in his life, reviewing his own actions and blaming others for the way things turned out on Nanga Parbat. Christianity and power politics Niebuhr Reinhold.
NY.: Charles Scribners Sons, - 1952. - 226 p. Interesting set of essays applying religions to politics, not in the 'holier-than-thou' moralizing way seen in modern fundamentalists, but in a way that seems almost inviting to secular reasoning. Even describes the dangers of applying religion to politics, as it applies absolute morality to a world that cannot deal in absolutes. Also provides a thorough criticism of nationalism and exceptionalism as well.

Sketching With Markers Thomas C. Wang Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1997
Markers are probably one of the most popular sketching media They are ver satile. expressive, colorful, and. above all easy to use Yet. because of their ability to adapt to a wide range of drawing techniques. markers are still used primarily as a substitute for other traditional sketching media For example, the fme-pomt marker can be used to duplicate the performance of an ink pen Likewise, the rainbow selection of Flair pens is used like an ordinary color pencil set Markers are popular because of their ease in handling and simplicity, rather than for their uniqueness, construction, and range of mb sizes and inks This, unfortunately, does not encourage the development of drawing techniques specifically for markers If this pattern persists, markers may always hold a second fiddle position to pen and pencil, which have an ancient and respectable hentage

lgli/Tsoncho Tsonchev The Political Theology of Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Reinhold Niebuhr - Political Theology and Christian Realism (MREP) 2018.pdf
The Political Theology of Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Reinhold Niebuhr: Essays in political theology and Christian Realism Tsoncho TsonchevAt www.themontrealreview.com, 1, 2018
At first blush, it seems that the realism in the political theology of Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Reinhold Niebuhr, is not simply a teaching in prudence, it is not in any way "pessimism," and it is not a political program or strategy for the achievement of particular political goals. It is rather a religiously inspired philosophy and a set of principles for the vicissitudes of life and politics. In addition to the main text on the Christian Realism of Augustine, Aquinas, and Niebuhr, this volume includes essays on the political theology of Martin Luther and on the Russian-Orthodox political perspective of Vladimir Soloviev, Semyon Frank, and Fyodor Tyutchev. It would appear, then, that the "realist" view of mysticism, as it were, would have us look at this materialist interpretation of "bourgeois religiosity" staring at a piece of ideological iron, without a vain spiritual illusion... But then, staring at it further, it seems again the old Marxist fairy tale of "scientific materialism" ideology conjuring physical principles to disguise an arid analytical ineptitude, just like they do in Cuba and the PRC, independently of reality, just to fit their delusional wishes. It would seem as if the Marxists found again a magical way to resuscitate the mythological giant Procrustes, and deferentially bowed to him, begging the noble giant to turn the Nazi Carl Schmidt's political theology into a miraculous "religious political theology" to keep materialistically eroding mercilessly their so-much loathed Christian delusions. It seems that the Marxists have become possessed with the Muslim Shatanic devil of self-mesmerized ideological virtuosity, spitting at the vulgarity of those whom they do not like... Quite a sad view of mediocrity... For it seems to be nothing short of an old silly tale recycled with Nazi virtuosity, repeating endlessly the same old story with a different makeup... So much for an academic rigor that views its sophistry as the holy grail of intellectual power as they do in the PRC.

Everest : Expedition to the Ultimate Messner, Reinhold Vertebrate Publishing Ltd, Bookwire GmbH, London, 2014
‘Everest by fair means – that is the human dimension, and that is what interests me ... In reaching for the oxygen cylinder, a climber degrades Everest ... a climber who doesn’t rely on his own strength and skills, but on apparatus and drugs, deceives himself. In May 1978 Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler became the first climbers in history to reach the summit of Mount Everest without the use of supplementary oxygen – an event which made international headlines and permanently altered the future of mountaineering. Here Messner tells how the and Habeler accomplished the impossible – and how it felt. He describes the dangers of the Khumbu Icefield, the daunting Lhotse flank, two lonely storm-filled nights at 26,247 feet, and finally the last step to the summit. Everest: Expedition to the Ultimate is a riveting account of the exhaustion, the exhilaration and the despair of climbing into the death zone. The book also includes a history of the mountain, successful ascents and Messner’s reflections on recent tragedies on Mount Everest. Reinhold Messner was the first to climb all fourteen peaks higher than 8,000 metres. The author of more than a dozen books on his adventures, he lives in a castle in northern Italy.

lgli/Enlightened Spirituality Immanuel Kant, Paul Tillich, and Reinhold Niebuhr.pdf
Enlightened Spirituality: Immanuel Kant, Paul Tillich, and Reinhold Niebuhr Roger Haight S.J. (editor), Alfred Pach (editor), Amanda Avila Kaminski (editor) Fordham University Press, Past Light on Present Life: Theology, Ethics, and Spirituality, 1, 2024
This volume presents reflections on the nature of Christian spirituality in the light of Immanuel Kant’s work Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of Morals . It also contains two short comments on Kant’s work: Paul Tillich directly engages Kant’s moral philosophy, and Reinhold Niebuhr indirectly addresses him with his reflections on the role of conscience in religious experience. The whole volume rests on the constituent role that morality, and hence ethics, plays in a comprehensive understanding of Christian spirituality. Kant adds to that discussion by introducing the voice of the Enlightenment into the conversation. His work serves as a bridge between the spirituality displayed in the Medieval and Reformation periods and what may be called modern Western culture. Christians who are socialized into twenty-first century Western intellectual culture may be relatively unfamiliar with the cultures that spawned the characteristic accents of the spiritual languages that are learned in the churches today. When they move into the world of higher education, they will learn a whole series of ideas from science and critical modern thought that directly challenge the ordinary spiritual conceptions of church traditions. The critical discussion between intellectual culture and Christianity during the period of the Enlightenment was deep and serious, and it helps to explain how the churches in the West relate to present-day intellectual culture. Kant’s text on the metaphysics of morals presents in an exemplary way the deep questions that Christian spirituality faces today with almost laboratory precision. The two commentators neatly draw the conversation into contexts that are closer to life in the world of our time.

upload/motw_a1d_2025_10/a1d/brb/Reinhold Martin/The Art of Inequality_ Architecture, Housing, and Real Estate (5955)/The Art of Inequality_ Architecture, Housi - Reinhold Martin.pdf
The art of inequality : architecture, housing, and real estate : a provisional report Jacob Moore (editor), Susanne Schindler (editor) The Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture, Columbia University, 1st edition., New York State, 2015
In 2013, in the United States, the median-income white households net worth was thirteen times that of the median-income black household. In 2014, the worlds eighty-five richest individuals held as much wealth as the worlds poorest 3.5 billion. In 2015, 88,000 households applied for the chance to live in fifty-five below market-rate apartments, accessible through a poor door on New York Citys Upper West Side. What is inequality? Typically, inequality is defined by a combination of economic measures referring to income and wealth. Entire populations, in the language of statistics, are measured and managed according to their place on the inequality spectrum: patronage for the 1%, morality for the ambiguous middle class, and austerity for the rest. This economic inequality is, however, inseparable from social disparities of other kindsparticularly in the provision of housing. More than just a building type or a market sector, housing is a primary architectural actwhere architecture is understood as that which makes real estate real. It begins when a line is drawn that separates inside from outside, and ultimately, one house from another. The relation that results under the rule of real estate development isby its very structureunequal. This is the art of inequality. Its geographies are local and global. Its histories are distant and present. Its design is ongoing. Its future is anything but certain.

Aesthetics of Standstill (Sternberg Press) Reinhold Gorling (editor), Barbara Gronau (editor), Ludger Schwarte (editor) Sternberg Press, Berlin, 2019
Essays consider the temporality and the aesthetics of “standstill.” "Standstill” could be the name for the kind of experience that is the hiatus between social expectations and real possibilities of agency. Standstill may also be the name of an aesthetic strategy to instill a nonlinear time of resistance and experience into the political protocol of progress. Finally, standstill can be the name for the temporal fissure in the midst of the subject, for the lapse between the subject of the enunciation and the subject of a statement, the limit that is the border between the inside and the outside. It can be the name for the mode of potentiality, for the moment of gesture, or, with Walter Benjamin, the medium of the dialectical image. The essays of this book traverse these dimensions of standstill as an in-between of time. Molecular Sieves: Principles of Synthesis and Identification (Van Nostrand Reinhold Electrical/Computer Science and Engineering Series) Rosemarie Szostak New York: Van Nostrand Reinhold, Van Nostrand Reinhold catalysis series, New York, New York State, December 31, 1899
The porous structure of molecular sieves, combined with their chemical composition, makes them uniquely suitable for use as catalysts or catalytic supports. As such, the materials are used in a wide range of chemical reactions, and as components of formulated products. The shape selectivity of the materials further enhances their chemical usefulness, and exploitation of their unique absorption properties holds the key to improving their catalytic properties. To that end, great efforts are being made to find new of different molecular sieves, with altered or tailored structures or chemical composition. The synthesis and characterisation of molecular sieve materials is a considerable challenge, testing both the chemist's understanding and practical skills. In a thorough overhaul of the very successful first edition of this book, the author guides the reader in the basics of sieve structure, synthesis and characterisation, and points the way to the development of new or improved sieve materials. By covering both the principles and practical aspects of sieve synthesis and characterisation, professional chemists, particularly those involved in industrial research and development, will find this book an essential guide to the current state of the art, and a useful starting point in their own research. Academic chemists, including postgraduate students, will find this book an invaluable guide to this exciting and important area of chemistry.
